Ricky signs with Barça: How and why
It's already been reported on spanish TV and it makes a lot of sense. According to reports, Joan Laporta (FCBarcelona's President) finished the negotiations himself.
Details and breakdown after the jump.
It's not official, but it looks like the deal is for 5 years with a decreasing buyout clause which would be expensive after the first season, quite affordable after the second (around 1M$) and decreasing after then. Ricky's salary will be 600k€ after taxes for each of his first two seasons. That's almost a 2M$ NBA salary because of the €>$ exchange rates and taxes. After the 2nd season his buyout becomes even cheaper and his salary increases drastically.
The deal makes a lot of sense because it gives Ricky financial stability (pay to play in Minny for 2 years vs making some money before leaving), a health insurance (very well paid player options for years 3,4 and 5), the chance to stay in his hometown and a very good level of competition (FCBarcelona is now the favorite to win both ACB and Euroleague). Also, he had 2 years left on his contract and the Wolves can't pay for his buyout, so if he has to stay for 2 more years, this option makes the most sense.
The tricky thing is that he now has all the leverage to come or not to the Wolves, as he will have a great offer if he decides to stay in Barcelona after his second year while his buyout amount would remain at a very affordable price. It's also interesting to consider that some of his new teammates include J.C. Navarro who bought out his previous contract with Barça to play for the minimum for the Grizzlies but also the infamous lottery pick Fran Vazquez who chose to stay in Barcelona rather than signing with the Magic who drafted him with the 11th pick of the 2005 draft.
How did Barça manage to get him?
A 3.7M€ offer with a clause that would make Barça pay another 2M€ to Joventut in case they win the Euroleague, which would turn out to be the whole buyout amount: 5.7M€. The best offer after that was 3.5M€ from Real Madrid, which Joventut was willing to accept but Ricky declined, as he doesn't want to leave Barcelona unless it's for the NBA. Looks like Minnesota's offers consisted on friendly offseason games and local business deals with Ricky which still wouldn't be enough to allow Ricky any financial stability and would leave too many variables open for Joventut.
Did you think Ricky's soap opera was about to end? It just begun, and unlike Lost, the new season will take a whole year to begin.

Listen I’m not drinking the cool aid on this. Rubio not coming over this year = not coming ever. This is a disaster for the NBA. The bust the wolves drafted, the center with teh first pick in the second round by all the scouts would have been a guaranteed lottery pick had it not been for the contract issue. If Rubio hadn’t convinced everyone the buyout was not a problem he would have been a second round pick because no one wants to take the chance, as it is three other teams passed on him for the very same reason. This drama is not worth it and is retarded, every five minutes the story changes and you know what i don’t care anymore. its the wolves, by the time he gets over here we will have gone thru two more twenty win seasons with countless more busted draft picks, just like the previous 20 years.

What is it you're drinking then?
He’s not coming ever, or he’s coming in two years after we’ve had “countless more busted draft picks”? Not sure why I’m bothering, but hey. I’m having an I.P.A. from Big Sky Brewery in Montana myself.

Moose Drool
I think that is one of them…I think there is also one with a bear on it.

Moose Drool is nothing special. Summit!

Summit is
a favorite of mine. As well as the Sam Adams Winter Ale. Apparently Summit has an Oatmeal Stout which is AWESOME, but I can only find it at the Three Squares in Maple Grove, MN. If anyone knows where to get it in the bottle…do tell.

Summit > Big Sky?
Now there’s some craziness. Not a big Summit fan, or any MN microbrew that I can think of. They seem to do it better out west for whatever reason. As far as where to get Summit Stout (which I haven’t had and wouldn’t mind trying – you can’t beat a good stout in Autumn), Surdyk’s is always your best bet, Zip’s on Franklin has a lot too. And here’s a place you should really check out – 4 Firkens on Minnetonka in St Louis Park. It’s a specialty beer store run by this Australian guy. No Budweiser, no liquor, just all kinds of good beer, sometimes he has tastings. I bet he’d have that Summit stout.

nice
I will have to check that one out. For the record…three squares has fantastic steak and parogies (I think I spelled that correctly) dish that goes pretty well with the oatmeal stout. I keep telling myself I will try something different there…but never do.

I haven't had any Big Sky other than Moose Drool, but have gone through a few 6-packs and was disappointed.
For Stouts, I usually stick with Sam Smith but would also try Summit’s. They made a nice one at Town Hall @ 7 corners a few years back. Summit’s ESB is my favorite – delicious, but getting tougher to find. Will check out 4 Firkens as well.

The cool aid tastes good...
Listen, Rubio this year woulda only caused a PG controversy that we don’t need yet. Rubio will do great in the mean time, plus we don’t need to win now. What we need is one more Khan lottery pick (Turner, Ebanks) and a quality FA (Gay, J. Johnson) and this team is back in the playoffs in 2010-11. One more 20 win season, twolves fans

LOL
I’m not going to comment on the validity of Rudy Gay again.
Joe Johnson’s interesting- He’s also going to be a 29 Year Old 2 guard commanding Max Money.
Ebanks has a really raw offensive game especially as the long-term solution as a 3. I see his skills more as a 4 at the next level. He’s doesn’t really have the perimeter game we want as a 3. The only reason he maybe works as a 3 is if he’s in a Defensive stopper role.
Turner’s been taked about at nauseam. He gets to the line, can hit the three, and defends. I tend to think he can be effective without the ball in his hands- but dont’ really have proof as was discussed a while back.

It's interesting that Turner
would likely both take minutes from Gomes at the SF and be a good “glue” guy—but still isn’t the #1 guy on a good team whom Kahn apparently is seeking. A Turner-Aldrich addition via the draft would be neato.
No to Joe Johnson, and Double No to Rudy Gay, especially for the icky Rubio’s-Rights-To-Memphis-For-Gay Trade that Charley Walters posed earlier in the week.

you may not need a pure 1 guy
if you have two solid 2 and two 3’s it may be enough. Really you need to break it down to different things a championship team needs to to and your top players need to fit that bill. Do you have a clutch shooter that like game winning shots…, do you have a low post offensive presence to get the easy Qtr’s 1-4 buckets…, etc. Otherwise, the rankings just get too subjective.

There was no announcement on Friday 28 Aug
Is that good news?
Is something still stirring with Ricky coming to MN? Seemed pretty authoritative that there would be an announcement on Friday. But noooo…
And here I had been convinced that it was best for the Woofs if he stayed in Spain for 2 years.
The stay in Spain is mainly on the brain?

I read a report that Kahn is back in spain and that the wolves made another offer. I guess they have found 4 million in endorsement money and plan on giving that or something like that, plus a couple preseason games against the wolves. That was on AS.com I think. Sound like the last time Kahn was in spain he made a deal that DKV wouldn’t sell rubio to another team without calling the wolves first to allow them to make another offer. Sounded like Fagen has been hitting the endorsement money very hard to try to get him to the US

Villacampa was meeting Taylor this weekend apparently
and a decision will be made on Monday.
But look, our hands really are tied here. Joventut want the one thing we can’t give – cash.
I think Rubio signing with Barcelona is a matter of when, not if.
Panic stations turned into happy land after we beat an inferior opposition like God wants us to.
You gotta love it when 10 minutes into the match you turn to the Hawk supporter next to you and say: "What the hell were we worried about all week?"

I’ve heard so many we will know by …. date’s that I take all of them with a grain of salt. I think if the story is true then they have found quite a bit of endorsement money for Ricky and thus would allow him to play for wolves.
