The thing
that none of these potential Bird proteges can replicate is the fact that Bird was world class in four areas:
1) Scoring the basketball
2) Passing the basketball
3) Rebounding
4) Toughness
THE POINT
the point isn’t comparing any of these guys to larry legend: it’s determining the best american white guy in the NBA.

"Kevin Love: Soon to be the contemporary Larry Bird?"
Sounds like a comparison to me. The article doesn’t necessarily do head-to-head comps of the existing white dudes directly with Larry Legend, but just by putting his name out there as a benchmark, the comparisons are implied.

Lee's athleticism
Lee can run the court with the best of them, and gets great hang time. Go back and look up how he did in the Sprite slam dunk contest in high school. Check the youtube.

OKAY
maybe tremendous is a tad too strong an adjective, but just a tad. he’s quite athletic.

I guess it's mostly a matter of semantics
Given how athletic every single NBA player is, I see a need to praise an individual’s athleticism unless it’s really hard to ignore. High energy and active are not the same as athletic to me. David Lee might be more athletic than I thought he was, but with a 32" vertical and 0.3 blocks per game average, he’s not exactly the total package.
typo, should have said
“I don’t see a need to praise an individual’s athleticism unless it’s really hard to ignore.”
