Mine
Teams win with a Superstar an All-Star and great support. So I went with 7,6,3,3,2,2,2,2.
7- Lebron James- Because he’s the best, period.
6- Pau Gasol- Top 5 WS, can play 2 positions, awesome.
3- Mike Conley- Still crazy young and had pretty good 2nd half of his season under a real coach.
3- Rudy Fernandez- Coming off a rookie year in which he showed he can drain 3s with the best of them.
2- Joel Przybilla- My team has plenty of offense and he is a great defender for only 2 points. Gasol will be playing PF in this lineup of course.
2- Ty Lawson- I can afford to take a risk on a rookie here
2- Mike Miller- Still a solid player at this price.
2- Mariese Spieghts- Will be a good play when given minutes.
So yeah. Obviously Lebron and Gasol are my 2 main guys here. Conley gives me a good up and coming PG and Rudy gives me a fairly young sniper and playmaker. Rudy to Lebron oops will be glorious. Przybilla just fills in for defense because he was the cheapest center that has good D.
I didn’t have a center on the bench since Gasol can cover that aspect. Also no backup SF because Lebron can play 90 minutes a game. Lawson gives me potential, Miller gives me some scoring and veteranship, and Speights kicks butt in the limited minutes he plays. Here is how my lineup would roll.
PG- Conley 34, Lawson 14
SG- Rudy 36, Miller 12
SF- Lebron 42, Miller 6
PF- Gasol 20, Speights 28
C- Przybilla 28, Gasol 20
Poster for next year? I'm thinking My Little Pony.
Nice
I almost took Speights as well. The question is whether you are building a team for this year only, or the next 5 years? I kind of split that difference, taking a couple of vets along with mostly younger players.
by Eric in Madison on Aug 6, 2009 5:39 PM CDT up reply actions
That team would win every championship for the next 7 years
But you broke the rules by taking both a 7 and a 6. (Which I guess just goes to show how unfair it was that LA was given Pau for free.)
Ehh that was my mistake.
I changed the wording slightly. The original post said 1 7 and 3 6s.
Granted if you had 66622222 you go over, so I meant to changed it to 2 sixes, but switched and/or up.
Poster for next year? I'm thinking My Little Pony.
Without too much thought
Blake Griffin (5)
Joel Pryzbilla(2)
Shane Battier (3)
Lebron James (7)
Rudy Fernandez(3)
Aaron Brooks (3)
DeAndre Jordan (2)
Steve Blake (2)
Couple of shooters around LeBron, some good interior D, potential inside scoring from Griffin.
with wayy too much thought
PG – Derrick Rose and Bassy -7
SG – Nick Young and Thabo – 4
SF – Kevin Durant and Travis Outlaw – 9
PF – Scola and Brandan Wright – 5
C – Joel Pryzbilla – 2
Coach Adelman or SVG
Ooh didn't notice Scola down at 3
He’s a steal at that price. If I didn’t have Gasol and Rudy man crushes I’d be tempted to take Scola as my PF and Roy as my SG and drop Gasol/Rudy.
Or Scola/Deron (healthy please) instead of Gasol/Conley.
Poster for next year? I'm thinking My Little Pony.
My team:
PG: Derrick Fisher/Jrue Holiday (4)
SG: Rudy Fernandez/Trevor Ariza (6)
SF: Lebron James (7)
PF: Al Horford/Anthony Randolph (7)
C: Joel Przybilla (2)
Coach: Greg Poppovich
With a point leftover!
Derrick Fisher is just too damn proven to not take for 2 points. Holiday would be a great guy after he retires. Rudy and Ariza can split the time at the 2 and backup the 3 whenever needed. Horford could start at the four or the five depending on the matchups with Przybilla being the defensive force inside (Horford is no chump) and Randolph being a future superstar possibility… probably not but worth the risk. With this lineup I get above average defense at just about every position with quite the infusion of offensive talent from Lebron, Randolph, and a little bit of post presence from Horford with some outside touch from Fernandez. The other guys can definitely hold their own. Nice 2 way team with a present and a future.
Here goes:
PG – Rodney Stuckey (3)
SG – Brandon Roy (6)
SF – Tayshaun Prince (5)
SF – Kevin Love (4)
C – Joakim Noah (3)
Reserves:
Derek Fisher (2)
Sam Young (2)
Joe Pryzbilla (2)
This is Roy’s team. I tried to include some unselfish players who bring things like defense, rebounding, passing or size to surround Roy. Also tried to include winners like Fisher. Hoping that Love’s lack of size can be made up for with the interior defense of Noah and Pryzbilla. Also hoping Noah and Pryzbilla can play together 10 minutes a night. Took Sam Young because he was cheap and hopefully can spell Prince as well as fill in for Roy 8 MPG.
Ok, here's my go at it.
PG: Mo Williams
SG: Anthony Morrow
SF: Andres Nocioni
PF: Kevin Garnett
C: Al Jefferson
B: Ty Lawson
B: Joel Przybilla
B: Corey Brewer
Coach: Flip Saunders
Doing this being a Timberwolves fan.
Mo, Andres, and Anthony Morrow are very good shooters, stretching the offense at the three. KG and Big Al will play in the post and completely dominate. Ty comes of the bench with lots of speed and starting fast breaks. Corey and KG are the two great defenders on the team. Joel is a pretty good one.
My Team
C- Joel Pryzbilla-2
F- Kevin Love-4
C-Dwight Howard-7
G- Aaron Brooks-3
F- Marvin Williams-3
G- Courtney Lee- 3
F- Nicholas Batum-3
G- Mike Miller-2
Coach: Rick Adelman
This team would be Defensively awesome and dominate the boards. It’s got perhaps the 3 best rebounders in the league. It also has some tight wing-defense along with Offensive versality in Lee, and Miller.
I like the roster apart from Brooks
I guess I just havent seen what others see in him. He torched the Wolves once and that was about it. I guess in terms of this post, I think there are better people to be had for 3 points.
Could you shed some light on your opinion of him for me?
Brooks
Speed! Speed! Speed! Perhaps a role model of sorts for Jonny Flynn at the next level. I tried several different ways to get Rondo. I figured the downgrade from Lee and Batum on the Wings wouldn’t be worth the difference. Brooks isn’t a great defender against size- but with D12 and the wings it won’t be as big an issue. Brooks is a pretty decent shooter from deep- especially in the playoffs last year. I needed a PG and no one else excited me very much.
by Jose Cordoba on Aug 6, 2009 10:04 PM CDT up reply actions
Fair enough
I had the same problem (which is why I left it with a point left over). I took Holiday and Fisher each for 2 pts rather than using all my points up. Although I think if I was to go all in, I would have gone with Westbrook, Sessions, or Bibby with Stuckey just barely beating out Brooks and Chalmers tieing him. Instead I took defensive readiness and possible returns in the future if Holiday pans out (and we all know Fisher is tried and true). I guess I tend to go for the less flashy player at PG just because we’ve seen that guys like Fisher, Rondo, Mo Williams, Jameer Nelson, etc can bring teams deep enough just by not having a lot of TOs.
I don’t fault your pick in the least, I just took a different route in picking a PG who didnt excite me much ;-)

PF- Zach Randolph 5
C- Brook Lopez 5
PG- Lou Williams 2
PF- Yi Jianlian 2
SG- Deshawn Stevenson 2
Brook Lopez is about 3 points too much, Galinari deserves to be unlisted. Out of the rest of them, who do you think would be able to get the ball the most? I think Zach just because he would get some rebounds and soon learn not to give the ball up or he wouldn’t get it back.
This is almost more fun
PG – Mike Bibby 3
SG – Jamal Crawford 5
SF – Andre Nocioni 3
PF – Jermaine O’Neal 4
C – Hasheem Thabeet 4
SF Bobby Simmons 2
PF Glen Davis 3
PG Beno Udrich 3
Man, it’s tough to build a bad team and not include Zach Randolph. But, I’m fairly certain this team would lose to the bad team Jose Cordoba made.
Haha
well with that team it kinda depends on the day. Jamal Crawford could always go off for 50? And maybe Jermaine feels like trying! I was afraid to take Thabeet in mine though, I doubt it, but he could always turn out to be a rotation player!
On the off chance that Thabeet don't drop
I could switch him out for Marcus Camby. I felt a little bad just putting in people who are likely injured.
I'll add mine to the mix
PG – Chris Paul (7)
SG – Ronnie Brewer (3)
SF – Rashard Lewis (4)
PF – Luis Scola (3)
C – Greg Oden (4)
BN – Thabo Sefolosha (2)
BN – Joel Przybilla (2)
BN – Mike Miller (2)
Assuming I can fill out my active roster with players who aren’t listed above, the rest of my twelve-man will be:
BN – Eddie House
BN – Amir Johnson
BN – C.J. Watson
BN – Aaron Gray
This team is predicated on getting lots of steals, rebounds, and blocks, which will lead to fast break opportunities. A frontcourt of Paul and Brewer will harass the opponents with steals and deflections, and Scola and Sefolosha are similarly gritty. In the half-court, it’s up to Paul to orchestrate the offense and get everyone efficient looks. All of the starters besides Oden can spread the floor to twenty feet, and Lewis is an elite three-point shooter.
I’d try to make sure that Sefolosha always plays alongside Miller or Lewis, not Brewer, since both Brewer and Thabo are defensive specialists who can’t spread the floor beyond the arc. I’d be willing to play lineups with Lewis at the four against smaller teams, which is why I took Brewer, Miller, and Sefolosha, who are all 2/3 hybrids. When Paul is out of the game, I’d almost always have the lineup be House, Miller, and Brewer/Sefolosha in the frontcourt, and let Miller and House share primary ballhandling responsibilities.
Did you also notice
that the Wolves have 14 and that is including 4 from Flynn who has yet to play a real game. Ouch.
Celtics
Rondo 5
Allen 5
Pierce 6
KG 6
Wallace 5
Perkins 3
Davis 3
So, that’s 33 in seven players and 27 in their top 5.
Pining for a Troy Hudson/Marko Jaric backcourt.
by SBG on Aug 7, 2009 9:30 AM CDT up reply actions
Someone at SSAR said Lakers had 34 in their top 7
Artest as a 5 seems pretty suspect to me though. He took a step back last year.
Poster for next year? I'm thinking My Little Pony.
Same with
Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Rasheed Wallace :-p
Word
To be honest, Kobe is last on the list of 7s I would take.
Odom/Artest/Pierce/KG are also not worth their price.
Allen and Rondo at 5 might be doable, although there are probably better options out there for both, unless you think one of those guys fit your team perfectly.
Gasol is the one guy who is definitely in the right spot. He’s not only a 6, but one of the best sixes.
Poster for next year? I'm thinking My Little Pony.

SF: Lebron James

C: Greg Oden
6th: Mike Miller
7th: JaVale McGee
8th: Darren Collison
I'm pretty sure
there aren’t supposed to be any free players. The reason the listed players all have values of 2 and up is because anyone left unlisted should be assumed to cost 1 point.
Portland fans are going to Love mine
It’s the exact starting lineup they could have had, with the added burn of swapping out LaMarcus Aldridge for Kevin Love! And this team would win championships.
Starters (20 points)
PG: Steve Blake – 2 pts
SG: Brandon Roy – 6 pts
SF: Kevin Durant – 6 pts
PF: Kevin Love – 4 pts
C: Joel Pryzbilla – 2 pts
Bench (7 points):
PG: Sebastian Telfair – 2 pts
SG: Brandon Rush – 1 pt
SF: Julian Wright – 1 pt
PF: Nick Collison – 1 pt
C: JaVale McGee – 2 pts
The first unit has 2 players who can create their own efficient offense from anywhere flanked by three guys who will score extremely efficiently from their areas if left open. The frontcourt will swallow up every rebound in sight, the 1-4 all have stellar shooting range, and everyone can play the team game.
The backups are built to run, with the best reserves backing up the weakest starters. Rush and Wright will naturally see fewer minutes, but both can be subbed in as defensive stoppers as situations dictate.
Ehh... I wouldn't want that team
You have awful defense on the starting unit outside of Joel. It’s going to be a warrior like team that loses games 125 to 135.
Blake is a below average defender
Roy is at best an average defender
Durant is a bottom 5 defender in the NBA
Love is at best an average defender (although a good rebounder)
Przybilla is an above average defender
Poster for next year? I'm thinking My Little Pony.
My other favorite non-LeBron starting 5
Starters (22 points):
PG: Aaron Brooks – 3 pts

PG: DJ Augustin – 2 pts

4 guys who should probably cost a point more than they do, which leaves enough room for the far-and-away best center in the game, Dwight Howard, who covers up for any deficiencies presented by the other four.
You Can't Teach Size
PG: Westbrook
SG: Miller
SF: Battier

27 points…fairly well rounded. Should be a fairly good defensive team too. If Fisher is too slow they could always toss in Lawson. Przbilla as a defensive 2nd option at center (keep D12 fairly fresh), Young as a versatile backup. Got a decent playmaker in Fisher, good wing scorer in Manu, good complementary players in Battier (doesn’t need ball and can defend) and Love (what boards D12 doesn’t get…Love will).

I wonder how
Lebron and seven scrub college players would do. Would they be better than the kings, wolves, grizzlies, thunder and clippers last year?
by TheEvilProfessor on Aug 7, 2009 9:44 AM CDT up reply actions
Worse.
I think it’s pretty much a given that the worst team in the league would absolutely demolish any college team. Bad as all those teams are, I don’t think Lebron could overcome the talent gap between his teammates and his opponents. If he could though, I’ll bet Danny Ferry would keep ramming his head into a door until he figured out why he didn’t have a title yet.

Ok, for real now, here’s my team:
Starters
PG: Chalmers (3)
SG: Mayo (5)
SF: LBJ (7)
PF: Scola (3)
C: Noah (3)
Backups:
C: Pryz (2)
G: Darren Collison (2)
G: Mike Miller (2)
This team is built on being complementary on all fronts. LBJ does what he does, but if points are needed elsewhere, Mayo can get them in iso situations. His excellent outside and midrange game will also open things up for others, while his ineffective slashing game is covered up by LBJ’s juggernautesque ability to get to the rim. He’s also a solid defender. Chalmers D’s up hard and can knock down the outside shot while taking care of the ball, ditto Collison, and neither need to be true PG’s with LBJ on the team. Miller provides versatility and outside shooting off the bench for a relative pittance.
Scola is gritty banger who will give his all every possession and will hit open jumpers and move off the ball. Noah is there to provide roaming defense, intimidation and rebounding. If you match up against a big body that pushes Noah around, you have Pryz on the bench. All 3 guys play tough D, but in a complementary fashion.
Coach: Popovich.
Jennings: F*** the Knicks, them n***** is always going to be weak.
And also overrated
I would much rather have Mayo’s upside and less butthole effect for a point more
For five points
You could have Kevin Martin. Maybe Mayo will be his equal someday, but right now, that’s where I’d go.
I opted out of all 3 of them
But of the three, I think I would stick with Mayo. I just can’t underrate defense and superstar potential. Got to remember, Mayo is only one year out of college now and much less injury prone.
You could also...
upgrade to a brandon roy type and downgrade a point in another position if you really want a scorer with potential out of the roof!
Yeah
I would much rather have Fisher? at PG with Roy at SG than Chalmers/Mayo
Eh, well I’d take Fisher if I needed to win immediately, but I think Chalmers will do everything better than Fisher within about a year, which is why I’d definitely take him for the long-term. Fish brings veteran poise and cool, but his overall impact is fairly low at this point. Just my opinion, though. The team is pretty green in the back court, but I like how those guys complement each other.
As far as tweaks I’d possibly make, I’d consider replacing Scola with Love and maybe downgrading from Collison to a guy like Eddie House. Scola’s a damn good score for a 3, though, so maybe not. He’s a tough, scrappy bastard.. the type of guy you love on your team.
Jennings: F*** the Knicks, them n***** is always going to be weak.
I’m not the world’s biggest Mayo fan or anything, but next to LBJ I was looking for a SG who can bring something to the table off the ball, space the floor, create his own offense when need be and play D. Those guys were fairly few and far between, so I think Mayo was a pretty good fit there.
I love Martin, but he’s a poor defender and the injury history scares me. Otherwise he’s a ridiculous scorer. As far as Roy goes, well, you can’t have a 6 and a 7 so I never got that far.
Jennings: F*** the Knicks, them n***** is always going to be weak.
Cannot overstate the butthole factor.. I have a serious dislike of JR Smith. Plus, Mayo’s a very solid defender and seems to be a great team guy. He’s tough for 5 points, but I do think he’d be a great #2 scorer next to a superstar like LBJ.
Jennings: F*** the Knicks, them n***** is always going to be weak.

O)h forgot to apoint a coach
I will Go with Greg Popovich,
This team has got everything, we got a dominent post player that can block shots, play defense and hi tthe Three point shot. We got and up and coming point guard, that can distribut the ball, rebound, and score when called upon. We have a defensive mided shooting guard, who can defend the likes of Kobe and Wade. We have do it all, and some short forward, that score at will and rises in the clutch. We also have a center that can guard Dwight, shaq, and any other center in this league, but his game also translates well to the offensive end, where he can outmuscle his opponenets in the post.
We have a strong bench that knows how to score. It all starts with Randy Foye, who can come in at any poitn of the game and start raining threes, then it goes to Craig Smith, who only needs 15 minutes to get 12 points, and we also have a defensive killer in Bruce Bowen, he might be dirty but no harm no foul right?
I like Hedo
I think KG is too old and that Perkins isn’t worth three points, you could go with a pryz. just my opinion though
A lot of people like Pryzbilla for 2
Probably the best bargain center on this thread.
Best steals
Probably best steal at PG is D-fish and Ty Lawson
SG: best steals Mike Miller and Rudy Fernandez
SF: Ariza and Outlaw and DeRozan
PF: David Lee and Ryan Anderson
C : Pryzbilla and Birdman
what you think?
I'd say the best values are
PG Sessions (3 )
PG Ty Lawson (2)
SF Lebron (7)
SF/PF Rashard Lewis (4)
SF Marvin Williams (4)
PF Scola (3)
PF Maurice Speights (2)
C Pryzbilla (2)
and based on the offseason hype, possibly Anthony Randolph, whose score of 3 is roughly 45 points off of where some are placing him this coming season.
Got to Love this team
PG – Ty Lawson
SG- Brandon Roy
SF – Shane Battier
PF – Kevin Love
C – Pau Gasol
Backups:
PG – Derrick Fisher
G/F – Austin Daye
F/C – Mariese Spieghts
Coach: Jerry Sloan
Good ball movements, able to either push the pace or score from the wings. They should also be pretty decent defending the perimeter…enough so that the interior won’t get exposed. Plus I was able to add some versatile and veteran backups. Show me one team that didn’t have at least a 7/5 of 6/6 combo on the inside outside that has won a championship.

9 players, sposed to be 8.
I would also take Birdman over Perkins if winning were the only issue, regardless of how much I dislike him.
You have plenty of scoring in Lebron, Miller, Murphy and Sessions. Birdman down low would also make this team scary defensively.
Poster for next year? I'm thinking My Little Pony.
I would disagree with this
Perkins is a vastly better defender than Bird-Man (It’s not really close). Unless one happens to be of the mind that blocking shots- is the only way one has defensive value. Perkins worked D12 and was the starting center on the Best Defensive team in history. Birdman’s an energy guy- who blocks shots- but not a great on ball defender. He’s similar in this ways to Marcus Camby. Lastly- if blocking shots is all that makes a Team great on D then the Golden State Warriors should be an awesome defensive team.

You got Luke Walton for that though!!!!!!!!!!!!
I do love the Troy Murphy pick. Another guy who should be a 5.

I like Birdman
I had him on most of my fantasy NBA fantasy teams last years lol.
But I would still take Perkins over him mainly because he is more proven. Stats are important, but when making a winning team I believe that playoff experience can give a team a huge advantage over a team that isn’t as experienced.
Plus Perkins is younger… he has more room to grow as a player than Anderson who is more or less at his peak currently. Perkins has proven that he can step it up when the games matter more. This years playoffs he average 11Pts 11 Rbs 2 Blks and shot 57% from the field. Again take note that he is only 24.
Had Birdman played the same amount of minutes he would of matched or even surpassed Perkins production in the playoffs. But hes 30 and I expect him to plateau and digress in the next 3-4 years.
When building the team I took Height, Age, and Experience into account. A tall team to create size mismatches on offense and defense. A young team that will that is talent but still has room to grow. And a Experienced team that will be more efficient and less prone to making mistakes.
Rgr
If you’re looking for a dynasty then Perkins might be the better answer because of the age. If you’re looking at one year, I’d still take Birdman.

Birdman would be good for marketing as well as good talent...
But who needs “marketing” when you have Lebron James.
Bleh
I hate Birdman and I hate having to defend his game, but I can also be objective. I personally would be sickened if Portland picked him up and I wouldn’t cheer for a thing he did, but since we’re just building fantasy teams… I gotta put that hate aside!

I think Birdman's on the ball D is overlooked because of his shot blocking
When adjusted for minutes the Birdman had a better Defensive Win Share (although barely, 5.2 to 4.9) and he also played on the team with less wins. Birdman also gives you the better offense for whatever reason.
I don’t think the difference is big enough for one to create a title and the other to not, but yeah.

The problem though
is that Stat-Stuffer’s like Birdman are going to be overrated by metrics that just evaluate stats.
They don't just evaluate stats though
1. Calculate the Defensive Rating for each player. Duncan’s Defensive Rating in 2003-04 was 88.501.
2. Calculate marginal defense for each player. Marginal defense is equal to (player minutes played / team minutes played) * (team defensive possessions) * (1.08 * (league points per possession) – ((Defensive Rating) / 100)). For Duncan this is (2527 / 19755) * 7353.42 * ((1.08 * 1.02929) – (88.5001 / 100)) = 213.18. Note that this formula may produce a negative result for some players.
3. Calculate league marginal points per win. League marginal points per win reduces to 0.32 * (league points per game) . For the 2003-04 NBA season this is 0.32 * 93.3966 = 29.8869.
4. Credit defensive Win Shares to the players. Defensive Win Shares are credited using the following formula: (marginal defense) / (league marginal points per win). Duncan gets credit for 213.18 / 29.8869 = 7.13 defensive Win Shares.
Even no stats defenders like Shane Battier are often among the tops in the NBA. (Battier was top 15 for 3 season in a row before dropping off bigtime last year.)
Obviously it’s not a perfect system, but it seems to be a decent judge of character defensively. The biggest flaw I’ve seen is overrating wing guys who have an absolute beast defending the point for them. (Lewis and TurkeyGlue, I’m looking at you.)
