Shooting Guards
After being a fly on the wall and obsessively devouring any and all T-wolves news I've finally joined. And what spurred me into action was to see what everyone thinks regarding the wolves shooting guard position. With Atkins' non-guaranteed contract and Kahn's comments indicating possible trades on the horizon I reviewed shooting guards on teams that are over the luxury tax to drum up discussion. (I'm assuming Corey Brewer will be playing the SF position but welcome debate around his ability playing SG.)
Or, do you think cutting Atkins and signing Bobby Jackson, Luther Head or another FA would be make more sense?

You know we signed Ramon Sessions to an offersheet right?
And the only player here that interests me at all is Nick Young. And I think we would have gotten him in the Foye/Miller deal if we had a chance of getting him (realistically) at all.
I did but...
I can’t really see Sessions, Ellington and Wilkins holding down the position. I’d can see Sessions at the 2 when playing small ball but I feel we need an additional player that can hit the three.
And thats exactly where Brewer comes in handy
We definitely need more than a rookie and a PG at the 2 spot, I agree there completely. But Brewer will be there when we need to go big or when the opposing two is tearing us apart, Sessions will be there when both him and Flynn are playing too well to bench and when we are looking to run against an older team or a weaker/smaller 2guard (Gordon of the Clippers for instance), and Ellington will be there when we need a good shooter and a true2. Wilkins will eat up the rest of those minutes when Ellington is tired and Brewer is focusing on the 3.
Good point
I worry about Gomes at the 3 against quicker players while Brewer is at the 2 but addressing the 3 spot is a whole other post. Still think we are a bit thin and with the trend of injuries every season it’d still like to see Kahn work to address this area.
Oh for sure
But its a double edged sword first of all. The quicker players are going to have a harder time guarding Gomes in the post. But also, Carney could be on his way to satisfy that role as well if needed. Not that I think Gomes will struggle too much on defense, he’s a consistent player, nothing more nothing less.
Carney!!!
I’d love to have him back. He’d really fit the up-tempo style and his 3pt % isn’t too bad.
Not as good of a rebounder or a defender
as I would like, but yes, I would like to see him back.

Under Roster Report, look at what it says about Carney.

Also
Corey Brewer could play the SG position in the right situation. But I think, like last year, that it will only be used sparingly and/or if the need arises from having too few bodies at the 2. I would rather have him defending SGs than SFs, but he is pretty good at guarding both of those.
I guess my question is
Which of those guys you listed have the potential to be long term starters in the NBA at the 2? I agree that the Wolves are thin/weak at the 2 and could use a talent upgrade. I also agree that playing some sort of combination of Sessions, Ellington, and Brewer could be effective at times next year. But honestly, that’s not a solution, or at least a championship solution. It’s a patch—at best—for a young roster in development and flux. My hope is that Ellington shows enough this season to prove that he’s the guy who will command the minutes at the 2, but I’m open to another Sessions like move to acquire talent on the cheap if it’s available to us.
"Come on Eddie, let's get serious."
Every roster needs a few patches each year
It is unlikely any of the players listed will become a starter other than Young (who is not a realistic option for us as Mplax pointed out). My intent was to focus on players who could come in and provide some quality mins without getting in the way of Ellington’s development. I think everyone would love another Session like acquistion. Wouldn’t J.J. Redick help take some pressure off of Ellington’s shoulders? What if Ellington is injuryed?
One thing I thought that was handled well with Love’s development last year was to insure that he wasn’t overextend by being played too many mins and I hope Ellington is handled the same way. I’d challenge the assumption that the more mins the better for development.
Well Redick would dedinitely take pressure of Ellington's shoulders
But only because Ellington could average 8-3 and look like an allstar in comparison. Ok just kidding, obviously everyone would help take a little bit of the load off and I don’t think anyone is saying 48MPG is the best way for development. There is a huge difference between getting experience and playing yourself into the hospital and the rookie wall is also a factor.
The team could use more scoring...
But they also need to make sure that anyone they could acquire doesn’t have to get his points by breaking off plays and not working with his teammates. One could argue that Sessions was the best possible FA they could’ve signed because he allows them to run a solid fast break for all 48 minutes and because he’s the best possible facilitator for teammates.
I think they’ll add someone in next year’s draft who can score, and if they can get a Sessions-type steal, I think they’ll take it, but it’s more difficult to get those guys because centers and shooting guards are the most overpaid guys in the league.
