Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

Korean game wrap #2

This game wrap gets as much thought and effort as a Kurt Rambis rotation chart.  Tonight's recipe is kimbap.  Kimbap can roughly be described as Korean sushi.  You can experiment with different vegetables and meats in the middle but the basic combo here is seaweed, rice, and pickled yellow radish.  I like to have a roll of kimbap with a bowl of soup for a nice weekday lunch.  It is best dipped in soy sauce or with a soy-based dipping sauce.  This is the ultimate on-the-go Korean dish.

How do you post videos on FanPosts?

I’ve been trying to for over a month now and it doesn’t work for me. I’ve used different computers, Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox, etc…

The videos don’t appear on the FanPosts when I preview it or even when I import them. Does anyone know why this is?

Poor KGMN...

This has been a real struggle for you. I wish I could help but have no idea. Maybe you could just post a link to the video(s) you’re refering to?

Tonight was a case study in...

…the subtle but undeniable affect having a balanced roster can have on a team. The Bucks have it on both ends of the floor. We have it on neither end of the floor.

Sure would like to see an Andrew Bogut playing for the Wolves.

by Oceanary on Jan 23, 2010 10:31 PM CST reply actions

the bucks are discussing

how to land love though… do not be so negative all the way :D

snp did his share to their discussion as well…

This won't be popular but...

…if the Bucks would trade us Bogut for Love, I’d probably do it

by Oceanary on Jan 23, 2010 11:19 PM CST up reply actions

I bet Kahn would jump at the deal

considering he still sees Love as only a #4 on a contender.

by Rumblebee on Jan 24, 2010 12:01 AM CST up reply actions

To be honest...

….that’s what I see him as too. He’s basically a Lamar Odom in my mind, all things considered.

Love rebounds like a madman, but the rest of his game is pretty average. At the least, we’ve seen he’s not any more of a franchise player than anyone else we have…he just stands out the most.

I think he could be the #2 guy in the right circumstances, but as a whole, I don’t see him as a player you can build even a frontcourt around, with him as the go-to post scorer, and expect to get consistent above-average scoring games from.

by Oceanary on Jan 24, 2010 12:08 AM CST up reply actions

I tend to agree

I felt this way last season, while still liking Love’s game. I kept an open mind in training camp and when he started playing well in December, even thinking for awhile he could be a #2. But since then, as Jefferson has become healthier the talent and size difference between is becoming more obvious, as it was before Al’s injury last season. Rebounding and outlet passes are only going to take Love so far, especially if he can’t improve his defensive quickness. If Love could get a little leaner and quicker he can still be a #3.
I kept an open mind as far as Love and Jefferson playing together, but I am again having major doubts, I think each player is better separate than together, especially if they are playing next to a big guy who is a better complement. I was also willing to consider trading AL and keeping Love, but I am getting ready to close the door on that as well, especially when Kahn has made statements lately that he is more concerned about having talented athletes than “Triangle” players.

I am very near proclaiming that Love should be traded this summer for a defensive big man (a tall, athletic PF perhaps) with a jump shot. The fact the Love has a rookie contract should make him valuable.

by Rumblebee on Jan 24, 2010 1:37 PM CST up reply actions

I’ve been wondering about this as well lately. I’m not sure the answer is trading Love, but I also don’t think moving Al is the answer right now. I also can’t help but think that Al next to a real C is going to give you more than Love next to a defensive specialist.

Why not sit tight on both of them and try to add that 3rd quality big to the rotation? If you can throw a guy like Brendan Haywood/Cole Aldrich into the rotation, then you can evaluate how both Al and Love do when playing with a defensive specialist and adjust from there. I’d rather go down that route than sell off our players before knowing how best to build for the future.

When I get sad, I stop being sad and be awesome instead. True story.

by Xand1 on Jan 24, 2010 4:12 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think we should trade him...

….or Jefferson, until we fix our wing problems and see what we have. If we do that and we still have defensive problems, then put them up for auction next near.

by Oceanary on Jan 24, 2010 5:48 PM CST up reply actions

That seems to be the case

A lateral move in talent for another player isn’t part of the plan with either PF, I’m guessing. The FO is likely fine with keeping those 2 and adding more talent around them (all while assessing their worth) before they make any roster-shaking decisions. Though if we can improve on one of those players through a trade, Kahn would be silly not to take it.

by nja700 on Jan 24, 2010 6:19 PM CST up reply actions

What if trading Love

and some asset like one of the extra picks, brought in a wing player who would be either a #3 or another #2 on a contender??

by Rumblebee on Jan 25, 2010 4:02 PM CST up reply actions

+1

Let’s see where the draft order ends up before any rash moves. I feel that part of the problem with this team is that Papa Glen waited too long to hire a GM, Kahn had to make quick decisions and we had a team full of strangers with several D-League quality reserves and a new coach. Let’s see a little more thought before action in this off season.

by SoDakHmr on Jan 24, 2010 9:37 PM CST up reply actions

Love has been sick on top of Rambis not playing him. Love needs 35 minutes per game. Not the mid-20's he's been getting recently.

While Jefferson and Love were on the floor together against the Bucks, they were within 2. Then Both Jefferson and Love were pulled and within a couple of minutes we were down 12.

And they played very little together the rest of the game.

You are going to think I’m nuts, but I think its another way to tank, without being obvious.

If jefferson and Love were on the floor together….. they could have cut that lead….

by Kevin Love Jefferson on Jan 24, 2010 4:12 PM CST up reply actions

I keep seeing your tanking theory

the problem is they could play Love and Jefferson each 40 MPG and still aren’t going to win more than 25 games this season. With the number of games that the bad East teams play each other, that pretty much guarantees bottom three all on it’s own, no need to tank, BTW, the entire season has been an intention tank orchestrated by Kahn in the offseason, no extra effort from Rambis required.

Also, remember, about two weeks ago Rambis said if some bad habits weren’t corrected, changes would be made without worrying about hurt feelings or player status. Since then, the biggest loss of minutes seems to be Love, and it started before he got sick.

Stop-N-Pop

This is Matthew Hayden, #1 Wolves writer on Bleacher Report (hahaha I know), and I think I know why the Wolves rotations with Rambis are so poor.

Truthfully, the Wolves need to predominately play Jefferson, Love, Brewer and Flynn at least 35 MPG each, complimented with Ellington, Sessions and Gomes, with 5-8 minutes of Hollins…

I think the reason why is because when the Starters aren’t producing, he looks for some energy…. You have to admit, the Wolves starters either bring it or they don’t…. They brought it for about 4 minutes when they were all out there… Not to mention the inconsistency of Wilkins…

I don’t know how a team that is so young, cannot play with any type of energy… I just don’t get it… I just don’t… I don’t know if it’s a lack of motivation or what..

What I’ve come to think, is that there is not a true leader on the floor that can get them out of slumps…

You noticed that when the Wolves play with the energy, the same players stay in the game… I.E…. the Houston Rockets 3 overtime game… It was Flynn, Brewer, Ellington, Gomes and Jefferson.. They all played with the heart and energy, so they stay in the game..

But if there’s one thing that we might agree with REGARDLESS… Love, Jefferson, Flynn (I’d even say Brewer at this point), need to play 35 MPG at the VERY LEAST… Point blank, energy or not….

by MNTwolvesanalyst on Jan 24, 2010 12:17 AM CST reply actions

Houston OT game isn't really an argument for Kahn's strategy

seeing as how that crew played the back half of a 4th quarter, 3 overtimes, and lost. Sure, they might have had energy at the outset, but if you’re playing Flynn 20+ minutes straight when his backup is as good or better as he’s getting torched by Brooks, and playing Gomes 20+ minutes straight at the expense of our best player… it’ll take more than an argument about energy, especially since I doubt they had that much energy after what amounted to nearly a half game of play without any time on the bench.

by John Doe on Jan 24, 2010 5:25 AM CST up reply actions

Thanks Matthew...

…I agree with JD: it has to be more than an argument about energy when you replace functional NBA players with D-Leaguers. I get that he could want to make a point about energy, but the talent drop off is so severe that…well, maybe he’s pitching it as “you have just as good of a chance winning with a bad effort as you do with D-League Pech/Hollins out there.”

It would make sense, but

why win 10 more games this season and miss out on a top 3 pick? I think Kahn and Rambis have agreed to develop players this season without the goal of winning this year… i.e. throw the D-league bench in and give away 10 games.

The difference between a top 3 pick and top 10 usually is pretty startling, especially as this is viewed as a 3 player draft…. of course karma is a bitch sometimes…

by DR_JPK on Jan 24, 2010 1:29 PM CST up reply actions

If that's the case

why commit 23M plus to Hollins and Sessions both not tradable as of today? It flies in the face of D-league bench.

by Conned on Jan 24, 2010 2:51 PM CST up reply actions

Because Sessions played well last year and at the time of the signing it looked like a pretty good move. Hollins was a shot in the dark at a guy who might have helped shore up one of our weaknesses. Evaluate these deals within the context they were made, not using hindsight.

When I get sad, I stop being sad and be awesome instead. True story.

by Xand1 on Jan 24, 2010 4:15 PM CST up reply actions

FYI I didn't like either

deal at the time. Didn’t like Hollins at UCLA and the Bucks valued Sessions at 1.6 & 1.7 for 2 years. That was after he played there 2 years. I now see why they valued him at that.

by Conned on Jan 24, 2010 5:09 PM CST up reply actions

A little bit more to it than that

They were trying to get under the tax and just drafted a rookie PG. It wasn’t a good financial idea to keep him, Jennings, and Ridnour.

by pagingstanleyroberts on Jan 24, 2010 10:26 PM CST up reply actions

we gave a 3 year deal to hollins. Unless something greatly changes in hollins performance, we will regret that contract. Hollins is one of the worst performers in the NBA this year.

If Hollins was “mediocre” player and showing improvement, I’d be patient. If he was a “baddish” player and showing great improvement, I’d be patient.

He is now one of the WORST PLAYERS IN THE NBA, and not showing much improvement.

by Kevin Love Jefferson on Jan 25, 2010 2:09 AM CST up reply actions

I think both ideas are correct, for different reasons

It is certainly hard to argue that inferior players should take away playing team from a better player, even if the better player is giving about 80% effort, especially on defense (see 1st QTR opponent scoring the last 10 games or so). From a fan and competitive standpoint, the most productive people should be on the court. An exception can be made for developing young players, but that isn’t what is going on here.

Flip side, the energy thing is a valid argument from a long term perspective. I think Rambis is telling guys if they aren’t giving their all, he’ll play someone who will, even if they are not as good. At some point, either guys figure it out, or they don’t. Those who figure it out will be a Wolf four years from now, those who don’t get traded this summer, or maybe get a last chance next fall. This approach is very similar to what Brad Childress did his first season. It was painful to watch at times, but today the results are a team that is playing in the NFC finals. This also is a worthy approach because while talented, lazy, players on a lousy team still make the team better, that same player becomes a detriment from getting over the hump from playoff contender to title contender. Also, as young, talented players are drafted it is imperative they see players rewarded for play the right way. I believe Kahn is supporting Rambis on this as well, especially consider the time Love has been on the bench (including the Houston game before he was sick), and the fact Kahn recently re-iterated his belief that Love is a #4 on a contender…he is sending Love a message, I have no doubt.

Remember also, most of us agreed winning was not the point this season. Finding four or five players who will be long term Wolves is the key, and of course it doesn’t hurt that it improves the chances of landing a Wall or Turner.

Leadership

This team really desparately needs some leadership on the floor…
I mean a guy that can create his own shot consistently, make great plays with the ball, and play good defense…

We need Evan Turner in a bad way…
Corey Brewer adds 15 lbs in the offseason, and pair them both…

by MNTwolvesanalyst on Jan 24, 2010 12:19 AM CST reply actions

Could he be any more of one?

Triangles run a lot of offense through wings, requiring them to make a lot of decisions normally left to point guards. What could be better than a 6’7" SG/SF who plays point guard for his college team?

Yappers.

You don’t have to be a 3 point specialist to be successful in the triangle. You need to posess a reliable jump shot with the ability to pass and slash when necessary. Turner is all of this, plus he plays defense and can rebound like nobody’s business. He’s perfect, pray we land one of the top 2 picks, because there’s no way he slips past #2 in the draft.

by SF on Jan 24, 2010 12:08 PM CST up reply actions

Favors

Draftexpress which is the draft site I respect most hasn’t budged with Favors, keeping him at #2 behind John Wall throughout the season. There are always teams looking for high-potential bigs, and he doesn’t need to tear it up this season since he’s only a freshman. My hope is that Favors and some other big like Cousins or Davis push their way into the top 3 along with Wall such that we have a possibility of landing Turner if we pick #4, since the lottery gods will likely not give us a top 3 pick.

by Rascal Flatts on Jan 24, 2010 12:33 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, but if you follow Jonathan Givony (the author of DraftExpress) closely,

which I do, because I am a basketball nerd, he has said recently that he may be moving Turner up to #2 soon. Here’s a couple posts from his Twitter account yesterday:

“Most impressive thing about Evan Turner isn’t how incredibly skilled & creative he is, but rather how hard he competes on every possession
about 22 hours ago from UberTwitter”

“Evan Turner is so good its a joke. Seriously need to start thinking about bumping him up to #2 on our mock. Glad we were on him so early.
about 23 hours ago from UberTwitter”

I really think he’ll be in that 2 spot shortly. I agree with you though, Cousins is playing incredibly well. He’s putting up amazing numbers for the limited minutes he gets. Cousins yesterday:

17 minutes
7-10 FG
0-1 3PT
2-2 FT
5 OR
14 TR
1 AST
2 STL
1 BLK
1 TO
4 PF
16 PTS

That’s pretty sick and he may find himself in the #2 if a team that needs a big is that high.

by SF on Jan 24, 2010 2:05 PM CST up reply actions

Wow, did you check out his per 40 pace adjusted?

He’s by far the most productive player in college basketball, with a PER of 40! Holy smokes, that seems unheard of.

http://www.draftexpress.com/stats.php?sort=&q=base&league=NCAA&year=2009%2F10&per=per40pace&min=20&stage=all&conference=0&pos=all&qual=first2010

I think the only question with him is the idiot factor….But if he keeps up this level of production without any major off-the-court issues I can’t believe that someone won’t look at him in the top 3. Those numbers are sick for a freshman.

by Rascal Flatts on Jan 24, 2010 4:04 PM CST up reply actions

Exactly. Even with his attitude/idiot problems...

Some team is still gonna take a flyer on him in the top 5, probably top 3. He may be limited athletically but you can’t deny those rebounding and scoring numbers

Kahn specifically said fitting in with the Triangle is not the priority.

by Rumblebee on Jan 24, 2010 1:59 PM CST up reply actions

yes!

I would say even more than a floor leader, this team could use a veteran who has played on some good teams. We all should expect a lot of losses, but these poor effort blowouts to crappy teams are just unacceptable.

A veteran PG that could mentor Flynn would be perfect…any ideas?

by DougW on Jan 24, 2010 1:52 PM CST up reply actions

I don’t know how you find one of those guys at this point in the season, but I think it should be our biggest offseason priority if nothing else. It’s an absolute no brainer from a player development standpoint. Kind of wonder if Rambus is too insecure as a rookie (ish) coach to have an additional authority figure, because it is a glaring oversight on the roster.

by DougW on Jan 24, 2010 2:16 PM CST up reply actions

I hope it isn't a Rambis issue

I’d give the benefit of the doubt and say blame it on a few other things.

1. Kahn was new and didn’t have time to get a guy like this, instead focused on blowing up the old roster and bringing in youth.
2. Guys like this are kinda rare, and probably don’t want to play on a 20 win team, especially one primarily playing youngsters. See Brian Cardinal.
3. Still have bad contracts tying up roster spots. Next year may be the right time.

by Rumblebee on Jan 24, 2010 3:52 PM CST up reply actions

It isn't a Rambis issue

Those guys are expensive (see the deals Kidd, Miller, and Wallace got). It’s a cap issue. With that said, though, having one of those guys would’ve improved the team’s competitiveness.

Jennings is more of a point guard

than Flynn. They both look to score but Jennings sees the floor better. For my money Lawson is a better fit for Wolves than either. Lawson can shoot the 3 with a high %, very careful with ball (not a Flynn Jenn strong suit) and plays better defense than both. Omri Caspi at 18 would look good right now for Wolves.

by Conned on Jan 24, 2010 8:38 AM CST reply actions

Flynn v. Jennings v. Lawson

This has been an endless, interesting, discussion on this blog. We could add Curry to the list as well.

I have only one point.

IF Kahn is 100% sure Rubio is coming in two years, picking a scoring point who gets to the line with great frequency and can defend smaller guards does make sense. With Rubio wolves don’t need a pure point guard. So IF Kahn thinks Flynn is a better scorer than Jennings and Lawson and that he gets to the line better than Jennings and Lawson the pick makes sense. Then there’s Curry. To pick Flynn you must think that his defense is better and that he’ll get to the line more often. (note: by “is better” I mean “potential to be better is 3-4 years.”)

I think it’s unfairly dismissive to chalk up the Flynn pick to Jonny’s charisma and interviewing skills. Perhaps that is it, but I’m trying to think of the defensible reasons Kahn would select Flynn over Curry, Jennings, Lawson. And I think there are a few good EX ANTE reasons. Of course, that does not mean it’s the correct pick, EX POST.

Have any of the beat reporters...

Asked Rambis about his rotations? I don’t read all of the Wolves stories from the Strib or PiPress. I’m guessing there’s a method behind it, but it’s obviously not conventional thinking (not that it needs to be). The only thing I can think of (and this isn’t intended to be a defense just a possible explanation) is that he’s putting certain rotations together to see if the 8-12 guys on the roster can get shots by running the offense and/or hold their own in case something happens during a game (injury, fouls).

I will defend him on this, though: he’s not the only coach who’d stick with what he thought was working in a close game, even if that means Cardinal is on the floor. I don’t agree with playing Cardinal over a guy who has a future with the team, but Rambis isn’t being unconventional in that sense. Flip did that all the time, and there were plenty of situations where I disagreed with his crunch-time lineups.

I pretty much read Oceanary now as my NBA news update and the stat analysis on this site goes well beyond anything offered in the mainstream.
