Tim's Preview: Game 3, Memphis Grizzlies
Even Grizz does not think that his team has a chance tomorrow night against the Timberwolves.
Minnesota Timberwolves (1-1) vs. Memphis Grizzlies (1-1) at the FedEx Forum
Thanks to the Wolves, the deer population in greater Minnesota has been reduced by at least a dozen. I don't know about the rest of you, but I am as excited about the Wolves as I have been since Kevin Garnett was here. We have scorers, athletes, rebounders and shot blockers. We have guys who compete hard on every play. Maybe that shouldn't be noteworthy, but given what has happened the past few years, it certainly is.
Next up is our first road game against the Memphis Grizzlies. Memphis is known for many things. The Civil Rights Movement. Fantastic barbecue. Jerry "The King" Lawler. Judge Joe Brown.
Memphis is also known for being the birthplace and/or home of many of this country's great musicians, such as Elvis Presley and B.B. King. Since the Wolves are finally starting to get in tune, I figured that it would be a great time for musical version of Tim's Game Preview.
Marc Gasol vs. Darko Milicic
After being traded to Memphis for his brother Pau Gasol - and watching his older brother win two consecutive NBA titles - Marc has spent the past two years fighting for great post position, only to watch (Rudy Gay / O.J. Mayo / Zach Randolph / Grizzlies Player X) take low percentage, contested jump shots.
Poor Marc has to be feeling lonely. He has to be feeling used. He has to be wondering what it would've been like if the Lakers had not included him in their trade and he was starting for the injured Andrew Bynum out in Los Angeles.
He also has to be wondering how many of his shots are going to be stuffed by Darko Milicic on Saturday night. The block is a lonely place to be when all you've got is time, a team shooting percentage under 30% and a negative turnover-to-assist ratio..
Winner: Darko Milicic
Darrell Arthur vs. Kevin Love
(Note: Zach Randolph is likely to miss Saturday's game with an injury, and thus ruining the opportunity to play "Jailhouse Rock". Oh well.)
Wasted time defines Darrell Arthur's career. He was wasting time when he got busted at NBA Rookie Orientation (Michael Beasley was only there to plead with Arthur to lay off of the pot). GMs were wasting time when they scouted Arthur, so much so that he was traded about seven times before draft night ended. Now, he's wasting time that the Grizzlies could be giving to other, better players and I'm wasting time writing about Darrell Arthur.
In the meantime, I should be writing about Kevin Love. Despite the fact that his shot does not seem to be falling, Love was a game high +19 against Milwaukee and had a ridiculous 16 rebounds in 27 minutes of play. Those are All-Star worthy numbers, folks, and it is because Love does anything but waste time on the basketball court. He's hustling every second he is out there this year.
Winner: Kevin Love
Rudy Gay vs. Michael Beasley
Now that Rudy Gay is being paid like a superstar player - $82 million over 5 years - Gay needs to start producing like a superstar player. Sure, the man can score the basketball. He had 21 points in each of his first two games against Atlanta and Dallas, while also grabbing 9 rebounds per game over those two contests. But can he be a leader on this team? Can he get the Grizzlies to the playoffs? Is he even an All-Star caliber player in the Western Conference?
Our own Michael Beasley also scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds last game against the Milwaukee Bucks. Do you know what Mr. Beasley is getting paid this season? Less than $5 million. And while nobody is crying for Be Easy's pocketbook, I'd take him as a player over Rudy Gay and use the extra millions of dollars to upgrade the Target Center concessions. I mean, it's almost 2011 and the majority of your food stands don't take credit cards? What's that about?
With $82 million, Rudy Gay could buy a whole lot of barbecue, whether it comes from the Target Center food stands or from a restaurant in Tennessee. Tomorrow night, however, I think Gay's going to have an upset stomach from a steady diet of Skittles all night long.
Winner: Michael Beasley
O.J. Mayo vs. Wayne Ellington
O.J. Mayo is a fly guy. He comes from the University of Southern California, and although he was born in Kentucky, Mayo clearly has Hollywood in his veins. While he was still in high school, players like LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony would routinely watch his games. Mayo also "flew" through college thanks to guys like Rodney Guillory, Leon Rose and others who violated NCAA rules while Mayo was at USC.
Mayo, however, did finish as runner-up for the 2008-2009 Rookie of the Year award, and although his numbers slipped last season, he remains one of the brightest and flyest young shooting guards in this league. Unfortunately for him, there are few people in Minnesota who still believe that the Wolves did not get the best of that draft night trade for Kevin Love.
The Timberwolves are going to stay "fly" in their own way thanks to Wayne Ellington, Wesley Johnson and Corey Brewer who are already soaring above the rim and making their own highlight plays at the wing spots. Mayo is going to have a difficult time staying in front of these guys or contesting their jump shots.
Winner: Wayne Ellington
Mike Conley vs. Luke Ridnour
Mike Conley was a nice prospect coming out of Ohio State, but no one is quite sure how or where he fits with this Memphis team. There were rumors in the offseason that he might not fit in at all and that his departure would be forthcoming. Conley is not a great shooter, he is not a great athlete and he is not a great playmaker, often leaving the Grizzlies without any rhythm at all.
It is yet to be seen whether he is good enough to be a starting point guard on an NBA team. Luke Ridnour - who has already secured his spot as the best point guard of the post-KG era of Timberwolves' basketball until Ricky Rubio comes over or Jonny Flynn improves quite a bit - is going to have his way with Conley tomorrow night at the FedEx Forum.
In order for Conley to overcome the blues, he needs to get rhythm. Unfortunately, he's only going to get a big fat loss instead, courtesy of the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Winner: Luke Ridnour
The Grizzlies will certainly be feeling the Memphis blues after tomorrow night, when the Wolves' will continue their winning streak. There's a saying that "they don't play the games on paper", but play this game on whatever surface you'd like, the Timberwolves are going to be victorious and it will not be close.
My prediction: Timberwolves 94 - Memphis 78
2-1, 79 games to go until the playoffs.

Damn you, sir
No Elvis “They call it a Trap”?
Thank you very much (Elvis voice)
Breaking down cognitive dissonance and group think since gasoline was cheap.
OJ Mayo is so short
that when Wes Johnson puts the ball above his head, it’s too far away for OJ to see it!
The Elvis song Flagrant refers to is Suspicious Minds.
I haven't written an insightful post in years.
This'll be an interesting challenge
for both of these teams – both are playing game 2 of a back to back. Will youth’s energy trump a homecourt advantage?
Discussing homerism since 2008!
The Grizz aren't really "old"
Last year they had the youngest roster and I am not sure where they rank this year, but they didn’t pull in any ARP card holders.
I am hoping that the serious minutes the Grizz starters logged (Gay played 44 and Mayo and Conley both 37) last night will be our ace in the hole.
Maybe there is something to having a reasonably deep bench like we seem to have.
especially
since a lot of our players didn’t play lots of minutes.

That didn't take very long...
…before cockiness set in. We win one game and we are already talking smack? It is nice to see some confidence, but we should remember our past and have some humility.
I know how cocky and annoying fans of teams like the Lakers are and I would hate to see us Wolves fans become like that if we start winning games.
There's a key difference
between us and them – TA’s Bucks preview was plenty cocky and we hadn’t even won yet! Meet the TWolves fan – cockiness is not dependent on wins.
Discussing homerism since 2008!
JB Bickerstaff's
Memphis preview here.
He said that the Twolves’ game plan is to protect the paint, rebound well, and force Memphis into being a jump shooting team. When asked which one stat holds the key to the game, Bickerstaff said rebounding, especially defensive rebounding. Memphis has a bunch of bigs who rebound well offensively, and that causes two problems – they get close shots and they draw fouls on those shots. How well we can limit their second chances and keep them from driving the lane may very well decide who wins this game.
I think whichever team has more energy is going to win this game, personally. There’s going to be one or two guys on each side with great energy (just seems like there’s always at least one or two guys), and depending on who those guys are might also alter the outcome. Personally I think that advantage resides with us because we’re not quite as dependent on any given guy for success – if Wayne, for example, has the hot hand, it’s no problem for us in terms of who’s sitting as a result, know what I mean? Having said that, I hope two of Love, Beasley, Ridnour, and Wes have a tone of energy and put up monster games.
Beyond that, my prediction is that this might be more of a grind it out game. If guys really are tired and rebounding really is considered the key to this game, then we might see a lot of guys focusing their energy on getting rebounds and playing at a slower pace (or perhaps seeing a lot of our bigs playing slower with a bunch of outlet passes to Love for easy fast break points). I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the final score for each team is in the low 90’s or less.
My prediction: Wolves win if we rebound well and win the fast break points competition. We lose if we send them to the line too much.
Discussing homerism since 2008!
How about outlet passes *from* Love*?
We gotz greyhounds, now. Yeah, I’m ready for a 1st quarter of fast breaks that make
the Grizz think he should stayed in the den hibernatin’. If we don’t come out with
rocket boosters on to begin the game, we are in for one long night. Take advantage
of extra minutes their starters had to play against the Mavs. Wear them down. They
have no bench.
Wolves, it's time to "switch the flip".
Serious errors in this preview
Neither Elvis or BB were born in Memphis. Both were born in Mississippi. Have to give credit where it is due.
Otherwise everything else seems accurate (except Mayo actually went to University of Southern California and not Sothern Carolina, but that is a minor point).
The USC was an obvious mix-up, sorry about that.
And both BB and Elvis are widely identified with Memphis, despite being born elsewhere. But I changed it to be more specific. Thanks for the feedback.
I probably should have added a % at the end of the subject line (since nothing was really too serious)
I figure I better give some props to Mississippi since I can’t think of anyone else of note who was born there%
Everyone still complaining about our 2009 draft
we will see evidence that it could have been worse tonight when we see Thabeet in action. He was number 2 overall and could really haunt the Grizz.
Last night in his 12 minutes he scored one point and pulled down two boards and had no blocks. Hope we see the same from him tonight.
I can't resist
mentioning this every time Thabeet is brougth up.
In the 2008 draft there was some talk about Thabeet, I was a big fan of drafting him with the 2nd pick …… of the SECOND ROUND.
And even then SnP reacted with “wouldn’t touch him with a 100 feet pole”
That pick still baffles me .. how could so many people get on board with drafting a guy with the 2nd pick that was projected by DX and similar sites for the 2nd round … MIND. BLOWING.

I would like to see Grizz
and Crunch duke it out
Corey Brewer might be the key to this game.
I think Brewer is our best matchup defensively with Mayo AND Gay. With Randolph out, Gay and Mayo are likely to be the first and second options for scoring. Brewer needs to play well enough on offense that he can log 30 plus minutes defending one or the other of the two. I fear that our other defensive matchups with those two will lead to needing too much help defense which could really hurt our rebounding.
So, I actually want to see a lot of Corey tonight.
Corey and Darko
If the paint is the key, Darko will be critical. Here’s hoping he comes out tonight with loads of ‘tude. And I think you’re right about Corey being key to our D.
Darko!!!
The way Brewer is shooting???
Not sure I want him on the floor that much.
