Awesome Opportunity
#1 UConn (and future Lynx top pick Maya Moore) puts its 79-game win streak on the line tonight against #2 Baylor (and Brittney Griner) and you can watch the action with Lynx staff including coach Cheryl Reeve tonight at Kieran's Irish Pub. This is the premier women's basketball match up of the year. Here are the details from the team:
Join the Minnesota Lynx staff as we cheer on the top 2 teams in women's college basketball on Tuesday, November 16 at 5PM at Kieran's Irish Pub. Located across from Target Center, Kierans is the best place to watch two-time National Player of the Year, Maya Moore, and the UCONN Huskies take on 6'8 dunking sensation, Brittney Griner, and the Lady Bears of Baylor. There will also be a drawing for great Lynx prizes!
RSVP to Joe Schwei at schwei@lynxbasketball.com or by calling 612-673-1693, or Erin Henning athenning@lynxbasketball.com or by calling 612-673-8421
For all of the beer heads here on Hoopus, Kierans is right across the street from Surdyk's Liquors. It's a win/win for everybody. Plus, it's not often you get to watch a game and have a beer with people who really know what they are talking about. No matter if this is chess, checkers, nuclear science, or basketball...it's pretty cool.
UPDATE: As you can tell, I'm terrible with the locations of my Irish Pubs. Keegan's is across from Surdyk's. Kiernans is downtown. Still, go get beer at Surdyk's.

Kieran's is not that close to Surdyk's
Kieran’s is in Block E, on the ground-level space that used to be Bellanotte.
Surdyk’s, unless they have a brand-new location I’m not aware of, is across the river on Hennepin, in Northeast, right next to West Photo.
Still, sounds like fun. Wish I could make it.

I never get any advice on beer at Surdyk's...I avoid that place and go to Zipps
Worth the drive cause they have some beer nuts there.

I agree that Zipps is great
I also heartily recommend North Loop Wine & Spirits, kitty-corner from Sex World. They’re small, but have an incredible selection of craft brews, both local and national. They have beer tastings every Tuesday for free, which consist of a 6-round flight starting at light and making its way towards dark. They really know their beer.
They also appear to know their wine very well, although I can’t tell for sure because I’m not great at wine.

More shilling
Here’s a cut-and-paste from their website, to give an idea of their beers:
We have new Winter Beers arriving daily!!! Some of our recent arrivals this week include: New Holland “Hopivore”, Imperial Hatter IPA, Brau Brothers 100 Yard dask, Left Hand Warrior IPA, Summit WInter Ale, Deschuttes Jubilale, Duvel Tripel Hoop, Widmer Barrel Aged BOurbon, Red Hook Eisbock (limited edition)
Summit Batch 5: Pumpkin Porter will be here November 15 in bottles.
I don’t work for them or anything. I just have never been as impressed with a liquor store as I have been with them. Although it looks like they could use a hand in the typing department….

Love Zipps..
…plus, if you look closely in their single-bottle beer section, they have an empty bottle of Pliny to taunt everybody.

that's worse taunting
then what Arthur and his kinnnnniggetes suffered at the hands of the French.

I can't remember
I was thrown off by the Pliny bottle and I asked the guy if he had any recs for beers like Pliny. After watching him laugh for about 30 seconds he pointed me towards this:

It was pretty good. The elderberry beer was close to that and I remember chuckling because I had overheard someone a minute or two earlier quoting Monty Python out of nowhere and I wondered what it was all about. BTW: I should say that beer was more than pretty good. It’s one of the best I’ve had lately.

Thanks for the recommendation
I shall add it to my growing list. Just had Southern Tier’s Autumn Harvest on tap, and it was quite good. Love IPAs, so Unearthly is much anticipated.
Cheers.

Love Unearthly
And their Pumking beer. Just had their Iniquity Black Ale this week, and it’s also fantastic. I’ve been impressed with everything Southern Tier has made.
Thanks, nja. My list is growing, as is my waist.
But as an illustrious former VP of the US once said, to paraphrase, “a waist is a terrible thing to mind.”
If we were back on topic, I might disagree and say “Love, earthly or earthbound.”

If you haven't had Hop Small...
Put that on your list two times…It’s season in Jan/Feb is coming up.
That beer is the reason I like beer. I never drank beer much before I had a glass of that at the Muddy Pig…I’ve been hooked ever since and starting to brew my own now. It’s a gateway beer.

Thanks, LDF
will try to check out North Loop next time I’m in MPLS (though it sounds more like a Chicago establishment with that name).

The Secret of Nordeast
While Surdyk’s is an excellent place to go for all sorts of beers, if you are in Northeast and looking specifically for the official beer of Canis Hoopus, you gotta go to Sentyrz on the corner of 2nd street & 16th Ave NE. They are always fully stocked on the Surly staples (Furious, Cynic, Bender, Coffee Bender) for 50 cents to $1 cheaper than Surdyk’s and they always have their seasonals as well. I was even able to pick up a few bottles of Darkness a few weeks ago. Check it out.
They are better on wine
If you’re flying out of MSP and have some time to kill, there is a Surdyk’s tasting room in the main part of the terminal now. Our server was a former chef and pretty good with the wine. He was certainly not stingy either, offering us a few freebies along the way.

Awesome place.
Definitely worth checking out next time you fly out of MSP.

Make sure to get to the airport early
wink, wink. We did, then nearly missed our flight.

The place across from Surdyk’s is called Keegan’s Pub.
Easy mistake to make
because the Irish all look alike to me.

That could be a lot of fun.
It’s also great for the Lynx that they’ve got the #1 and #4 picks in the draft. For an already deep team, I’m very interested to see what the Lynx does.

Interesting
another thread ovetaken by beer… and this one was even started by talking about women!
You're not letting natural selection take its course! You're like the guy who invented the seatbelt...
That being said...
I would definitely go to this if I was in town. Sounds like it could be a lot of fun and I plan on watching the game anyway if I can get it. Anyone know what channel it will be on (if it’s on, which I assume it is)?

does sound like a lot of fun
and like great PR. would be nice if the wolves could learn from this. Would be awsome to watch a college hoops game with potential wolves pickes alongside Rambis, Kahn and Ronzone, or any combo of those guys, while throwing back a few frosties.
Will the Real Thor Please Stand Up ... ?
