Wes Johnson almost didn't hesitate on his first 3

If we can dump the “almost” he’ll start hitting them.

Love hits the three

Hopefully that gets him going tonight

by Oceanary on Nov 22, 2010 7:19 PM CST reply actions

This is a freaking track meet

Westbrook with the Iceman layup, Wes with the power dunk less than 4 seconds later

Fun to watch, but this pace heavily favors the Thunder. We need to slow down and execute

KD is on Wes Johnson right now

Beas on Sefalosha. Both teams trying to match defense to offense

Very solid all-around player

But at some point, the Thunder will need to accept he can’t be a power forward on a championship team

by Oceanary on Nov 22, 2010 7:40 PM CST up reply actions

He's a team killer

at least at the four. And I suspect at the three he’s going to develop an Al Harrington type game (which is also team killing)

They were very very smart to not extend him.

by Ailuridae on Nov 22, 2010 7:41 PM CST up reply actions

i dont think hes dat bad

i cant figure him out mayn

MAYN HOL UP!

by MAYNHOLUP on Nov 22, 2010 7:43 PM CST up reply actions

If they can get him to accept a sixth man role, he's great for them

But he can start for other teams as a Tayshaun Prince type of player

by Oceanary on Nov 22, 2010 7:43 PM CST up reply actions

And a lot of people made that argument

about Al Harrington a decade ago.

Certain people’s games just don’t help teams win (at all). Green is a defensive liability at the four or three is neither a prolific or efficient scorer and doesn’t rebound for anything at either position.

by Oceanary on Nov 22, 2010 7:53 PM CST up reply actions

He's always played some point

He was a late bloomer and was only 5’10 until late in high school which was one big reason he had almost no big school offers until Howland brought him to UCLA. There he was the back up PG, but moving to SG to play alongside Collison was kind of a theme for guys who would be seen (incorrectly) as combo guards (see Jrue Holiday).

But...

…would Rondo be as good as he is, numbers-wise at least, if he didn’t play on a team full of Hall-of-Famers? Westbrook deserves a lot of credit for improving a bad team as much as he has.

by Daniel-Son on Nov 22, 2010 8:02 PM CST up reply actions

Rondo

That guy just gets it. You could not call a play all night and he’ll still direct a flawless offense

by Oceanary on Nov 22, 2010 7:57 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah.

So could a lot of guys playing with KG, Pierce, and Jesus Shuttlesworth under Doc’s tutelage.

by Daniel-Son on Nov 22, 2010 8:05 PM CST up reply actions

He was already showing signs of being excellent as a rookie

Before the arrival of KG or Allen and when it looked like Doc might not make it to the summer.

by Ailuridae on Nov 22, 2010 8:06 PM CST up reply actions

Just because they played terribly...

…doesn’t mean they weren’t accounted for defensively. Games plans are still centered around stopping the Big Three. Whereas defenses game plan with Rose as the # 1 option every night.

by Daniel-Son on Nov 22, 2010 8:09 PM CST up reply actions

Rose is number 1

Westbrook and Rodo are 2nd and 3th options I take rose

by chuckd@79 on Nov 22, 2010 8:10 PM CST up reply actions

It is very team dependent.

In any case, Chris Paul is the best point guard in basketball. And Deron WIlliams is second, in my opinion.

by Daniel-Son on Nov 22, 2010 8:13 PM CST up reply actions

Rose is a fantastic, fantastic player

But at the end of the day, he’s an undersized athletic 2 and I think that ends up hurting him. I want D-Will or Rondo.

Yeah...

…I think Chris Paul to the NBA and the post season is like Tim Tebow to college football and the NFL. I see monkeywolf put down Nash. That was my pick when he was at his peak. Best shooter I’ve ever seen. I’m not a big fan of point guards being the best players on the team and I think D-Will walks right up to that line without blowing by it like Paul.

That is nonsense WTF are you talking about. Chris Paul is that deal I would rather have Chris because he is quicker then D-will

by chuckd@79 on Nov 22, 2010 8:25 PM CST up reply actions

The Tebow comparison...

…is a bit of a stretch but I understand the point being made. Again, so much depends upon what the given team needs.

they were an average defensive team

adjusted for pace. sarver cost them joe johnson, rondo, and a few other picks.

by Stop-n-Pop on Nov 22, 2010 8:27 PM CST up reply actions

But...

…he was responsible for them getting Nash in the first place. The Suns had their chances, against the Spurs (Horry with the infamous hip-check which resulting in STAT and Diaw getting suspended) and last year against the Lakers. They just aren’t, and weren’t, built for playoff basketball.

by Daniel-Son on Nov 22, 2010 8:37 PM CST up reply actions

No he was not it was thier GM

He is the GM for the Raptors now. If he did not have a cheapskate owner they would have one. The give up Rondo and Deng because their owner was cheap.

Many of us were lurking around here when you were slogging through the crap of every game. Now that things are actually looking up (whether through blind luck or someone’s skill or what), you kind of deserve to feel a little hopeful, maybe? And focus less on the negative?

look, i’m a big boy and as tim has mentioned i’ve heard far worse (especially by my drill instructor) but i just want to make it clear that i think that people who buy into kahn are getting a bill of goods that does not match up with what they think they are buying. ronzone, yes. rambis, maybe. kahn, definitely not. if that’s going to get called stubborn and childish, fine.

True, but this is an encouraging game.

We’re not on the level where we can win a close game in Oklahoma City. That’s to be expected, but we’re way damn closer than I would’ve thought.

And we appear to be truthfully, in a non-flukey way, approaching the level where we can hang with the Thunder at home into the last minute. That’s a giant leap forward from last year, and even earlier this year. OKC lost exactly this type of game all year a few years ago. The next step is the ability to win these games, and this has me encouraged that we’ll make that step in time.

by Ailuridae on Nov 22, 2010 9:42 PM CST up reply actions

I'm not really a super-optimist.

But I disagree. The ‘nothing positive’ game would have been had we let it get away from us when they were up by 15 in the late third quarter. I know it sucks losing close games, but don’t lose sight of where we were in the third quarter, and then where we were with a few minutes to go.

Phase 1 is getting blown out every night. Then you start to compete with good teams, and then you start to win consistently at home, and then you start to take games on the road. Can’t expect us to shoot right to the top. We’re flat-out not good enough to win a close game with OKC on the road. But we’re making strides toward that, and we appear to be firmly past the days of an easy night off for contending teams.

by LoveTo on Nov 22, 2010 9:46 PM CST up reply actions

I respect your opinion.

You’ve stated your case. Now I’ll state mine.

Good back-and-forth.

Found some real common ground there.

:)

by LoveTo on Nov 22, 2010 9:56 PM CST up reply actions

It's time for a big step.

Player X having a good game (unless it’s Wes demanding the ball on offense or Ridnour crushing his man on D) doesn’t move the meter.

by fanslaststand on Nov 22, 2010 10:01 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Agreed on that.

But we’ve really only just moved past the blowout, other-team-is-laughing-on-the-bench-in-the-third-quarter stage. I’d expect us to stay around where we’re at for a while.

I’ll remain encouraged by games like this (where we take steps in proving that we’re actually good enough to hang with most teams) until the latter part of this year.

by LoveTo on Nov 22, 2010 10:11 PM CST up reply actions

You must not have paid attention to Darko

If Darko keeps playing like he has for the last 4 games. He will be a top 5 Western Conference Center for about 5 million a year. I didn’t think playoffs were possible before the year started and so the wins/losses decided by whistles aren’t going to piss me off that much. What I’m concerned about is how is the team competing. This team did not lay down and played well into the 4th. Darko is putting the ball on the floor, passing and drawing contact and dominating on the Defensive end. KLove is already an extremely talented glue guy. Beasley is a very talented scorer. Darko is showing signs of being the third piece of a playoff team. If he averages 10 points 6 boards and 2.5 blocks I’d be content. His ceiling has always been much higher and now he’d showing it.

by Airete on Nov 22, 2010 9:50 PM CST up reply actions

I've probably missed less than 10 minutes of Darko

As a Wolf.
I had an awesome time watching Dark Lord tonight too, but everything he showed tonight we all KNEW he could do already.
Him doing it again doesn’t come close to covering up the horror of the last few minutes.

by fanslaststand on Nov 22, 2010 9:55 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Won't argue about the last 10 mins

but my excitement about Darko is that he’s putting together a string of solid performances. Any type of positive consistency from him is game altering. My stated goal has been to be competitive late into the 4th in 60 games this year. It won’t make many fans happy, but it met my criteria.

Every single game I watch

I see something to be optimistic about. Tonight, Darko put up another solid game to follow up his performance against the Lakers. There are big time teams with relatively skilled centers. The Wolves are inexperienced, and when they figure out how to combine all their talent into a single game, they will be a very solid team. I’m trying really hard to be patient until then.
