I recommend everyone checks the link, as there's more gold to be found.

Hilarious. All I have to say is: Son, you gotta turn the safety off.

You were a daydreamer, a sass-mouth, and, not infrequently, a bit of a gigglepuss. Somehow I doubt twenty years of amphetamines and failure have done anything to improve that.

I've got a novel idea. Play the guys that outscore the opponents.

I just went to NBA.com and checked out the team +/- stats. It’s really not surprising. It’s the guys that work on both ends. I think we should try out playing these guys just a tad more. Since they seem to have the point of the game figured out (outscore the other team). And I find that my eyes agree with the stats. Wes, Tolliver and Bassy are crushing in this stat. And when you watch, you can see it. They have talent at both ends of the floor, they hustle, and they don’t do stupid shit.

Next on the list is Brewer (suprisingly, except that his D is outstanding) and then finally Love and Beasley. The rest of the team is utterly garbage.

I already know the counterargument:

“Well, OUR starters are playing their better players”.

This may be true for the first 8 minutes of the game, but beyond that our ridiculous rotation makes this impossible.

I believe the coaching staff should openly say, “We’re gonna play the guys that outscore the opponents” And start allocating P/T by the courttime +/-. Now you’ll start to see personal player goals more closely align with team goals, and you’ll also naturally gravitate towards playing players that do it on both ends!

I doubt this will happen, though, because the mindwizard Rambis played Flynn heavy minutes all of last year, even though he was a liability at both ends.

Well here’s the graphic, comments are appreciated.

I somewhat agree with this.

Luke,
Wes
Brewer
Beasley
Darko

With Tolliver/Love/Bassy getting the bulk of the rest of the minutes off the bench. Also the lineup should be very very fluid and allow Love to play 30+ minutes with Beasley sliding to SF depending on matchups.

All other players should stay on the bench and learn.

by Dominate on Nov 8, 2010 9:16 AM CST up reply actions

I wouldn't be opposed to a:

Bassy
Wes
Beasley
Love
Tolliver

Lineup

So long as Bassy and Tolliver promised not to shoot unless wide open. I think Wes brings more than brewer and Beasley and Love are just guys you need on the court. I also tend to think Luke is better than Bassy, but maybe its just that his jumpshot looks prettier.

by rugbyisbetter on Nov 8, 2010 12:04 PM CST up reply actions

Bassy does do stupid sh**

Shot selection, mainly.

OTOH, the guy works hard on both ends, expends a lot of energy trying to get
his mates involved, and that, IMHO, is enough to get him good starter’s minutes.
He just makes things happen. He has a winning attitude. He’s just limited in
personal offensive production. In the system, getting others going, he’s great.
When others give up, this guy doesn’t. I like his warrior mentality.

You can see Wes’ upside has just started to evidence itself. This kid is going to
get much better than the consensus of ‘experts’ predict. Keep starting him. I
think that when he gets comfortable, this young man will start ringing up big
numbers. His length and quickness and smarts are going to help him become
a very good defensive player as well.

Tolliver does bring his lunch pail and hard hat. He doesn’t bring much fire-power.
But again, he has the warrior spirit that Bassy has. Neither brings much offense.

I can’t deny that Brewer works hard, either. But here’s another guy that can’t score.
I was encouraged the other night though, when he found that he was much better
at getting the ball in the hole when he went glass instead of rim. His bank shot is
much better than his straight on shot. Is it a depth perception problem? Another
fighter, but again, no point production.

Pek is a project I’d like to work on. He’s the strongest guy I’ve seen since Shaq. He
has some moves, in close, that are pretty effective at getting the ball into the hole
by just forcing his way through guys. A nice up & under, and some nice fakes & fouls.
I know, he seems clueless most of the time, but when he gets comfortable, he
could do some work on opposing bigs. He does work hard. I’d like to put him
(for now) into the game when their bigs get a couple of fouls, then set him up
in isolations to body up to the hoop against these guys to score and draw contact.
He’s a decent free throw shooter. He tried to flash a bit of outside shooting from
about 10-15 feet last game.

Beasley and Love are enigmatic to me. Hot & cold. Love’s numbers are there, but
they seem deceptive. Beasley shows flashes of brilliance, then disappears.

Ridnour. Did he go on vacation, or what?

The other guys? I know there must be someone good there, but on the whole, we
have to admit, they are mediocre and should be put on the waiver short-list.

My enthusiasm for Darko has waned considerably because of his lack of enthusiasm.
He’s another guy that flashes competence and then does the disappearing act.

This string of tough match-ups with quality teams (save Houston) has sucker-punched
the Wolves and has taken a lot of their enthusiasm and energy and confidence away.
I don’t know how they can recover. Now they have to face the World Champion Lakers
after a string of blow-out defeats. It must be hard on players and coaches to get up for
practice every morning, knowing that every day is an uphill battle to improve.

Wolves, it's time to "switch the flip".

From we're not going to make the playoffs to...

..we’re not going to improve. I know, it’s way too early and all the injuries. But, this team is plain bad right now. No defense at all. It’s a layup or wide open 3 on almost every play for the other team.

Dark, dark, darko days (typo, not really).

by ChicagoViking on Nov 8, 2010 9:10 AM CST reply actions

On a positive note,

I finally got to see Darko dunk. He needs to do it more often as opposed to those hook shots that clang off the rim.

This team is comically bad

The silver lining for me is knowing I will hear this question many, many times this season: Anyone want free tickets to tonight’s Timberwolves game?

by GaryCraigTrentSmith on Nov 8, 2010 11:58 AM CST reply actions

The downside

will be watching…. Darko’s myriad fallaway, leaning, hanging, scoop “shots” clang off the rim; KLove playing only for himself and his stats (i.e. missing a shot, falling to the court, then watching from his a** while his teammates try to defend 4-on-5 on the other end); the Corey Brewer roller coaster experience; Bassy’s shooting, passing, running of the offense for prolonged periods; Rambis’ nightly mix-and-match rotation (i.e. ride the hot hand/teach lessons with a heavy hand – both to a serious fault); my team give up 120 a game and insist on calling out individuals who dont buy into our "defensive philosophy.

So to refresh, the only positives this season for me: Free tickets, Wes Johnson, Michael Beasley, and 4TH QUARTER T-SHIRT TOSS!!

Barf.

by GaryCraigTrentSmith on Nov 8, 2010 12:12 PM CST up reply actions

I didn't think they would be this bad

Yes, the schedule has been difficult.
Yes, they need time to gel and learn each others tendencies;
but man have they been terrible in an epic way.

I keep hearing many on the team site transition defense as the problem, but I don’t think that’s taking it back far enough to it’s root cause. So far they are the worst shooting team in the NBA. Missed shots = fast break opportunities for the opposition. Make more shots and the defense will get a little better. Also, until they start shooting/finishing better I think they need to slow the game down a little. Shooting poorly and playing fast is a recipe for one demoralizing loss after another. I know it doesn’t make sense but I’d rather see them lose 90-75 than 130-95.

Good.

Wolves, it's time to "switch the flip".

by BaylorWest on Nov 8, 2010 1:22 PM CST up reply actions

You're right. 'Make shots' - the best defense against the break.

These guys are terrible finishers at the hoop. So many wasted opportunities that
could have been conversions if they’d concentrated more. Also, Darko, when he’s
in close, needs to JAM, not that soft put-in attempt. Corey’s been right at the basket
so many times and yet can’t finish even when unopposed. You’re right on. If this
team had makes and finishes off of good looks, we wouldn’t be seeing these blow-outs.

Wolves, it's time to "switch the flip".

Rambis/Taylor should put out a special $$$ bonus ...

for the guy with the most dunks at the end of the game. I’ve probably listened to more games on the radio this year than watched on TV and can’t tell you how many times I hear “insert t-wolf name goes in for the layup and oh if falls off to the side….” Usually a fast break with an and-one follows for the other team. Because I can’t see what’s going on, I wonder What the hell is going on? Why are we missing such a high percentage of easy shots? It’s frustrating to listen to. Who on this team can set up and start finishing at the rim?

by TenderWolf on Nov 8, 2010 2:04 PM CST up reply actions

I think we're

missing Al Jefferson a little right now. You could expect 20 points on a given night from him. I’m not a fan of his shots but he was at least effective.

Rubio, who art thou savior.

and EVERYONE underestimated how much his loss would hurt.

Yeah..

…they might not even get to 15 wins without him ;)

My only problem with that joke/reasoning...

is that I think a team is better off with 2 good players than 1, or 1 good player than 0… for instance, Miami was smart to keep Dwyane Wade after their 15-win season, even though they just as easily could have won 15 games without him, the next year. They kept him and got back into the playoff picture by adding Mike Beasley and getting healthy.

Memphis took the route we just did when Gasol was a little nicked up and they were struggling. Why pay Pau Gasol when you’re only going to win 22 games, anyway? Well — now, I think the idea of Pau Gasol + OJ Mayo + Rudy Gay sounds better than what they have.

The jury is still out on Jefferson, don’t get me wrong. Utah is 3-3 and trying to find its identity. But, this Wolves team lacks a primary option in a bad way. If J-Fly comes back and fills that role, we will all be shocked. If Webster fills that role, it’ll be a major leap from his Portland career. We’re witnessing the damage that happens when Love is put in that position. Ditto Mike Beasley, although he at least looks to have the physical tools for the job.

by Andy G on Nov 8, 2010 6:04 PM CST up reply actions

Agree but just to add a point

I think it depends on how much money a team is losing. If the Wolves really are ~20MM in the hole then you can see how they were compelled to move Jefferson.
Only the owner can make this decision but when you couple our log jam at the PF spot I can see why saving the money was too tempting.
Sucks for us tho.

by fanslaststand on Nov 8, 2010 10:12 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

I will stick up for Jefferson...

…to this extent (to which I am guilty myself): I think the post-KG Wolves have created a situation where the entire fan base is looking for a player that isn’t going to walk through the door and the entire team is so poorly run that we look to blame the best player for things that are largely beyond his control. The Wolves keep pushing the rebuilding thing further and further off into the future while burning through valuable assets and opportunities (starting, I think, Roy/Foye and their inability to turn Theo Ratliff’s expiring deal into anything worthwhile) and getting very little in return. From where I view it, it’s all diminishing returns from the time they were unable to find starting players with the 5th and 6th picks in the 09 Draft. At some point, you just have to toe the line and build according to what you are dealt instead of some vision in the head of a guy who probably doesn’t know what he is doing vis-a-vis the rest of the guys who have his job in the league. I suppose you could make this argument that this is what they are doing with Rubio, but I honestly believe that they’ll continue to shuffle the deck until they’re left with nothing. It’s really going to suck giving a top 5 pick to the Clippers.

At least when

we had Jefferson, we had a strong frontcourt. The offseason was spent beefing up our backcout/wings. Unfortunately, what was a strength for this team is gone and our wings are not good enough to compensate for it. Al would have dominated a team like Miami and even Orlando to a point. Darko’s been terrible so far this year and Love isn’t good enough to make up for it.

Our wings were supposed to be our strength now but they seem just as bad as the wings we had last year. They certainly aren’t stopping anyone since the 3 PT shooting percentages for our opponents are off the charts..

With Jefferson and Love, at least we had a strength. Now it seems that we are weak everywhere.

Rubio, who art thou savior.
