Quickness

OK, first of all, the Wolves won because they shot the hell out of the ball and the Cavs are a God-awful basketball team.

The point of tonight's game wrap is to tell Cavs fans "we know that look in your eye".  We know what it feels like when a Hall of Fame player goes away and there is nothing left in his wake.  In light of not really having a game wrap to write about, here are a few pointers for Cavs fans in a LeBron-less world:

  • Find yourself a Death Match.  It doesn't matter if the players are good or part of a long-term plan, find yourself two players that don't fit together and go at them mercilessly. We started with Randy Foye and Rashad McCants.  Of course, it also helps to have a GM that doesn't know how to draft, but you can only hope for the best.
  • Make fun of Ryan Hollins.  Hell, it worked (is working?) for us?
  • Hire David Kahn.
  • Wait for draft picks.
  • Study the games of Perry Jones and Harrison Barnes
  • Get used to Blueprints, Blueprints 2.0, Blueprints 2.1, Blueprints 2.2, etc
  • Have a sense of humor
  • Hope that your local TV carrier carries all of your favorite teams' most exciting moments.
  • Gear your blog around draft picks and hope for tomorrow.
That's pretty much it.  Enjoy, wash, rinse, repeat, and hope that you can make it through a couple of reclamation projects and....well, there is no way you're making up for a LeBron or KG so take it all in stride and don't get angry.  It will all work out in the end.

Survive.

So really, what we're saying is...

….the Cavs would have been better off not outing Danny Ferry

This is well put. Not much Cleveland can do at this point put let things shake out. We definitely know what that’s like. Game basically spoke for itself….we had to win and we did, so good for us on that point

Senor Amor, last five games:
23.6 ppg, 19.2 rpg, 40.2 mpg

Last ten games:
20.8 ppg, 16 rpg, 38.4 mpg

So given this production from Uber-Glue guy, how do the Wolves build a winner with Love on the team?

Doctrinaire thinking takes a long while to break down.

At this point Love’s detractors think good performances simply make him a better trade chip. Bad ones, too, suggest only that you have to trade him.

It’s like tax cuts for the right wing:

  1. Good economy? Cut taxes.
  2. Bad economy? Cut taxes.
  3. Surpluses? Cut taxes, give that money back!
  4. Deficits? Cut taxes, it will spur the economy.

Starting from an unshakeable doctrine, you can’t take in new evidence.

Yes it does

We could go on like this, but it would be useless and boring.

by Rascal Flatts on Dec 5, 2010 9:26 PM CST up reply actions

Or we could look at the history of Democratic governance post WW2

To address feral’s point it looks something like this on those issues assuming there is a national debt

1. Good economy? Pay down the debt at current tax levels
2. Bad Economy? Make up demand gap through direct spending or temporary tax cuts. Pay down the increases debt when the economy returns to form.
3. Surpluses? Hey surpluses are good they allow you to pay down the debt. Keep tax rates the same.
4. Deficits? Well Clinton took care of this pretty easily. Raise taxes to create surpluses to pay down the debt

So, yeah in those four instances which aren’t mutually exclusive the Democrats advocate raising taxes in one maintaining taxes in two and lowering taxes in one. Conversely, the modern incarnation of the GOP suggests cutting taxes in all four instances. So the GOP really has a single solution to every problem feral listed facts be damned and the Democrats plainly don’t. So it doesn’t at all “work both ways” my friend.

Turning the corner

We may not have KG anymore, but KLove is a damn fine alternative. He rebounds better than KG, has better range than KG, actually wants to be the go to guy, and doesn’t cost 20 mil a year (yet). KG was a better defender, but only had one really successful year during his time in Minnesota in terms of playoff success.

We always used his salary as a reason we couldn’t build a successful team, like it hamstrung us. Now that he’s been gone for 3 1/2 years, we have to quit looking for excuses and put a winner on the floor.

I like how this team is growing. They’re competitive every game now, and are growing more and more confident each game. Tonight we saw what can happen if we move the ball and get good looks and the shots start dropping.

Cleveland came in expecting an easy win, but they’re the one who looked like the underdog. We manhandled them physically. Why anybody would take the top rebounding team in the league lightly is beyond me. We’re earning respect around the league with each passing game.

Wes Johnson finally broke out, playing his natural position at the 3. He didn’t have to sit and watch Beasly jack up shot after shot, and instead was free to just let ‘er rip. He didn’t disappoint, as he was lights out.

It may be time to split those two up. Start Wes at the 3, and have Beas provide a spark off the bench, where he can play some 2. Playing with Beas seems to be stunting Wes’ growth, as Beas is a ball dominant player and duplicates what Wes brings. I know it’s only one game, but Wes sure looked like a solid #4 pick tonight, finally playing his natural position.

With Brewer at the 2 providing energy and timely shots, we were unstoppable tonight. It’s too bad Rambis doesn’t have the nads to try different lineups, unless he is forced to by injury. This lineup is clearly the best one we have put forth thus far.

With Jonny and Martell’s return imminent, Rambis will again be forced to tinker.

It’s a nice problem to have.

Breaking down cognitive dissonance and group think since gasoline was cheap.

by Flagrant on Dec 4, 2010 11:28 PM CST up reply actions

One of them should come off the bench

to provide a scoring spark, and so they don’t get in each other’s way. They play the same position. Wes needs to play the 3. He was awesome tonight.

by Mano on Dec 4, 2010 11:44 PM CST up reply actions

Beasly and Love play well together

But it’s been said that Beas is out of position at the 3. He loves to play under the rim, so he should play some 2.

Starters

5. Darko
4. Love
3. Wes
2. Martell
1. Flynn

Bench

5. Pek
4. Beasley
3. Tolliver
2. Brewer
1. Lukebastien

This way, the scoring is spread around, the bench is stronger, and we have more depth. A 4-15 record practically screams for change. Rambis has to do what’s best for the team, instead of trying to protect egos. His .190 winning percentage also screams change.

by Mano on Dec 5, 2010 12:06 AM CST up reply actions

Yup. Beasley should be benched because...

Love will carry us to the promised land as we play the CAVS for our 82 games in a season.

by Dominate on Dec 5, 2010 1:27 AM CST up reply actions

What?

The post you responded to said it was good that Rambis played Beasley and Love hefty minutes, and that they’re our two best players.

How you can twist that into something praising Love, I’m not sure. I’m sorry about whatever Kevin did to you.

by LoveTo on Dec 5, 2010 3:05 AM CST up reply actions

Someone needs to go...

Wes plays far better at 3… beas can only play 3-4 and klove is only a 4. any one of them would be great trade bait for a natural 2… iggy please? I love all 3 but one needs to go.

by rugbyisbetter on Dec 5, 2010 1:44 AM CST up reply actions

Don't need to trade any of them to get Iggy.

There’s also a bench for a reason. Wes can come off of it.

by LoveTo on Dec 5, 2010 3:06 AM CST up reply actions

But that would leave Special K and Killer Beas playing together

They’re both 4’s. Beas isn’t suited for the 3. Wes is. That’s why we drafted him. Klove needs to be the Alpha Wolf. He’s our best player, and should be treated as such. He needs to be the focal point of our offense, and playing with Beas denies him that. For the good of the team, make Beas a 6th man. Was tonight a fluke performance? Do Love and Wes play better without Beas? Would Beas actually thrive being the focal point of the 2nd unit? We need a ball dominant scorer on the 2nd unit. Beas would fit the role perfectly. Does Rambis have the nads to do it? Doubtful.

by Mano on Dec 5, 2010 5:27 AM CST up reply actions

Fluke? Sort of

Kevin Love is at his best, I believe, when he’s playing off of someone else’s dominant performance. That’s not to say that there are going to be games against teams where he matches up well against them, or games (like last night), where he simply steps up and carries the team in Beasley’s absence, but over the course of a season teams will figure out how to shut him down enough to significantly limit his effectiveness, hence the notion that Love plays his best off of someone else. So in my mind, Love isn’t an Alpha Wolf. It’s just not his game, but it is within Beasley’s potential. It’s an odd thing, but it reminds me a little KG and Sam Cassell. KG is clearly the better player between the two, but was at his best playing off of Cassell’s game (or at least achieved his greatest success here playing off of Cassell’s Alpha Wolf).

Discussing homerism since 2008!

by biggity2bit on Dec 5, 2010 11:45 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah, this is an absurd discussion

Wes was taking the same shots he always takes, he was just taking more of them. If he somehow proved that he could beat opposing 3’s off the dribble and slash to the hoop a lot more effectively, I get it. But he played the same game he always does, one predicated on rising up for jump shots. I’d rather him take these against shorter 2’s than long, athletic 3’s that are more likely to get up in his sight line. Again, I don’t know which position is “best” for him, but it’s ridiculous for anyone to take last night’s game and draw a conclusion from it.

by Rascal Flatts on Dec 5, 2010 1:52 PM CST up reply actions

Wes said the same think in his post game interview

He said it didn’t matter whether he played 2 or 3. They are basically interchangeable positions and he ends up shooting from essentially the same spots.

by Rodman99 on Dec 5, 2010 2:02 PM CST up reply actions

Let's clear this up
Wes was taking the same shots he always takes, he was just taking more of them.

Actually, he didn’t. Not even a little bit. His 9 shot attempts lines up very well with his season average of 8.4 per game. What he did do was make more shots. He made 8 shots…out of 9 attempts. This just further demonstrates how ridiculous this conversation is. Not only are we debating whether Wes should play position 2 or position 2A (as has been repeated dozens of times, the 2 and 3 are completely interchangeable positions in our offense), the main evidence is a night in which Wes shot a ridiculous 89% from the floor.

That said, Wes is not a great fit at the 3 because he would typically be matched up against much bigger, more physical players. He matches up better against 2’s, in offense and defense. I prefer to see him there.

Only one problem

Kahn was flying solo when he invited these turds on to the team. In other words, his team. Not surprising though, since prior to joining the Wolves he stated his best personnel move was to draft Jamaal Tinsley in IND.

Well

Hollins is a freak athlete and that is always worth taking a look at.

Sessions just put up 18 and 6 assists on us so he can’t be that bad.

by Cobra312004 on Dec 6, 2010 6:21 PM CST up reply actions

"Turds"? Sessions is not a "turd."

The guy was as classy about a bad situation last year as any player can be. This season in Cleveland, he’s struggled with the roster and taken more of the scoring load on himself, but generally speaking his game looks a little more like, well, his game. His assist percentage, for example, is very high. Last year’s offense here, with the trike aspect and the horrible wings, really derailed Sessions.

It’s hard to argue against the idea that Rambis really had no use for Ramon Sessions. Kahn had signed him up thinking of two-PG situations, Kurt doggedly refused to run those…. Sessions really kind of got shafted as far as the whole situation went here, and he didn’t grouse. I wish the guy luck.

Oh, and Kahn didn’t say his “best” personnel move was Tinsley. He said that the trade for Tinsley was among the things he was most proud of in Indiana, and he said it like this:

Kahn: I was most proud of draft-night deals I engineered for Jeff Foster and Jamaal Tinsley, two players who remain with the team today, not because they were our best players but because of the pressure surrounding both deals.

The highlight for me was sitting 4 rows up behind the Wolves bench.

Love's Line

19 Rebounds and 5 – 5 shooting threes. Has a combination like this ever happened in the NBA?

by johncolson on Dec 4, 2010 11:48 PM CST reply actions

You're right.

That’s got to be a pretty rare combo. If he had managed one more rebound, I bet we would’ve seen an ESPN graphic: “Kevin Love is only the (………) player in NBA history to have 20 rebounds and go at least 5-for-5 from 3.”

by LoveTo on Dec 4, 2010 11:52 PM CST up reply actions

Since the 1986-87 season Kevin Love is the first.

The next highest rebound total for a player who was perfect from 3-point land and made at least 5 3-pointers is Antoine Walker on 01/07/98 playing for the Celtics against the Wizards.

The only other players to have 19+ rebounds and make at least 5 3-pointers in a game are Bill Laimbeer on 01/26/90 (23 rebounds, 5 for 8 on 3’s), Raef LaFrentz on 04/18/01 (20 rebounds, 5 for 8 on 3’s), and Rashard Lewis on 11/05/01 (19 rebounds, 5 for 8 on 3’s).

by Jesse S. on Dec 5, 2010 12:30 AM CST up reply actions

His rebound total in that game was 12 in 42 minutes. Shoot, give Love another 10 minutes in this game tonight and he might’ve had 30 boards again.

The comparisons make it clear what an oddball line that is, too.

(Here’s the search for 19+ boards and 5 threes together in a game.)

It’s not like we look at Love and think, naturally, of Laimbeer, Raef LaFrentz, or Rashard, is it?

When we do kick around comparisons for the guy, the ones people choose are often based on stuff other than his game. Kevin Love is a weird combination of traits. Middle name Wesley, after Unseld, and m’kay his outlet passing…. and yeah, but not exactly. Rebounded like Oakley early on in my rookie searches, but he’s no Charles Oakley.

Great great game by the guys

Love was awesome, Wes is proving to be a better 3 than 2 and everybody was shooting well.

I know it was only the CAVS but I think this is more indicative of our starting lineup being balanced as opposed to having our two athletic starters playing out of position – Wes and Beas.

Maybe we should just start Beasley off the bench and roll the dice with this lineup if they can string a couple of wins together.

Great game, even greater result.

by Dominate on Dec 5, 2010 1:24 AM CST reply actions

The reason why I think moving Beasley to the bench could be borderline catastrophic is because of Beasley’s confidence possibly taking a hit and returning to the Miami Heat Beasley.

Who can handle coming off the bench better, Beasley or Johnson? I don’t know Johnson very well, but I do know that I don’t think Beasley would handle it very well.

but dreading coming back to CH and seeing people say, “see! Wes is a 3! Beasley or Love must go! This proves it!”

This is definitely not the game from which to draw those kinds of conclusions. And way premature. I’m hoping Wes’ perrformance will embolden him in the future, since he finally began to assert himself.

It would be a nice archive of the mood around here..

considering there were multiple threats of mass suicide on the Spurs game thread. It’s a volatile bunch.

Apropos of nothing - my favorite non-basketball moment of the night (at the game)...

was Beasley’s “karaoke” rendition of Toni Braxton’s “Unbreak My Heart.” It was amazing. He may be the most exhuberant human being I have ever seen. Including babies. (Except for when he’s not, I guess). He did not stop talking on the bench for even a moment.
His limp was also pretty profound, but I guess those guys deal with sprained ankles like normal people deal with a little hangnail or something.

There were also a couple of other short films for Kevin Love’s coat drive.

When/if the actual play of the team catches up with the marketing, it will be pretty sweet :).

by PDGirl on Dec 5, 2010 8:31 AM CST reply actions

Yes.

That was amazing. I become more convinced that I’m headed towards a Beasley jersey every game.

I was at this game, and the Beasley-Braxton Karaoke thing was fantastic. Particularly when you watched Beasley looking up at the scoreboard laughing his ass off and singing along.

The “Embrace” video with the split second shot of Pekovic was wonderful as well.

He was lovin it, fans were lovin it..

Huge ovation while Rambis was trying to draw something up. Classic.

Ah crap, Pek's tattoo just stole my soul..

I'm on board with the Bi-polar Thong-Parka Clothing Drive!

Now that would be stellar marketing for the Wolves organization!

Love in a Parka

Pek in a thong?

Ok, never mind, this idea isn’t going anywhere good!

Regardless of who they were playing

The Wolves and their FO can give them a pat on the back for taking a step forward. The game had great ball movement and passing. The Wolves shot with accuracy that was stunning. Even with all of the great performances, I was impressed with the way Corey Brewer took it to the basket. If Mark Madsen was known as the “best, worst player”, could Corey be known as the “worst, best player”?

Sat near Kahn at game

We were sitting 6 rows up mid court and Kahn was sitting to our left on other side of aisle. He was sitting with a very tall and very big young man ( Big Baby Davis type body ). I was racking my brain trying to figure out if this was a potential D-League signing or something similar.

What did we really learn about Wes at the 2 vs 3?

Really. Not trying to stir things up or be obtuse. But, really, what did we learn? To my eyes Wes basically did what Wes has been doing – floating around the perimeter, making the same cuts, taking the same shots. If nobody said ‘Wes is a 3 tonight’ I don’t think it would have registered. On D he defended the 2 at times. He was around the glass a bit more, but other than that…what is the basis for concluding Wes is way better at the 3? To me, he just played his game and just got more time, more touches, and more confidence (from playing against the scrap heap of Cavs wings).

My thought is Wes was better not because he was a 3 (what is the difference in the 2 and 3 in our scheme anyway?), but because he was out there without Beas. Or perhaps, more appropriately, he was the number 2 or 3 option playing without a ball dominant player and against third tier players.

It's a trick. Get an axe.

by CaliWolf on Dec 5, 2010 1:14 PM CST reply actions

Yup

Functionally, Wes should be the perfect wing pairing with Beasley. He is a low usage floor spacer that should punish teams for collapsing on Beasley or any of our other bigs. In reality, his shooting has been spotty and there are times he needs to be more aggressive. But he is NOT an alpha dog. There is no redundancy with Beasley’s game that holds back Wes. Wes needs to step up more when Beasley is in the game. That will only help Beasley and the rest of the players since the defense will have to account for him.

by Rascal Flatts on Dec 5, 2010 2:04 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed.

Wes just needs to be aggressive and look to shoot. He doesn’t need to look to create offense with the dribble or anything, he just needs to look to be a scoring threat.

by princelyfrank on Dec 5, 2010 2:15 PM CST up reply actions

As I said above

Wes shot 89% from the floor. He didn’t take more shots than his average, he wasn’t necessarily more of a focal point in the offense. That is the ONLY real difference in the way he played compared to how he usually plays with Beasley in the game. There is no reason he can’t go 8-9 from the floor and score 20 next to Beasley…you know, other than that it’s an absurd shooting percentage.

Last night, I crossed another item off of my bucket list.

I made the Timberwolves’ “Kiss Cam”.

I’m trying to tell myself its just a coincidence that this coincided with the lowest concession stand sales in Target Center history.

2011 NBA All-Star Starters: Darko, Love, Beasley, Wes, Luke, count it.

by TimAllen on Dec 5, 2010 2:18 PM CST reply actions

Totally saw it. I almost "outed" you this morning, but wasn't sure if you would be annoyed...

obviously not :). Glad your gf (I am assuming that is the lady you kissed) got to see the Wolves on a great night.

by PDGirl on Dec 5, 2010 6:26 PM CST up reply actions

TimAllen - I saw you on the big screen, but

Didn’t and wouldn’t have recognized you. Are you the guy who gave his girlfriend the triple kiss… It was an entertaining game with all the activities going on between timeouts. The marketing dept. has definitely upped their game as well as the team. I’m happy they stopped playing that god awful "everybody clap your hands’ b.s….anyway I’ll be there again next friday and looking for another enjoyable evening!
