GameThread #54: @ Pistons

Minnesota Timberwolves at Detroit Pistons, Feb 16, 2010 6:30 PM CST

via espndeportes-assets.espn.go.com

While the NBA world is still recovering from the All-Star Game hangover and preoccupied with trade chatter, today's the day that teams get back to the regular season.

Tonight, while you consider the costs and benefits of acquiring Tyrus Thomas, the Wolves will be in Detroit.

Detroit Bad Boyscan't believe the Silverdome was sold for less than $600,000.

Very winnable game

Just don’t let Ben Gordon go off, and the Pistons will probably struggle to reach 90 points tonight

Rodney Stuckey

I’ll never understand what the Pistons saw in this guy

Uuuhhh let's play some defense here....

Only shots the Pistons are missing are Ben Wallace’s free throws…

Fantastic

6 of Detroit’s 8 makes so far are layups or dunks.

That

I don't see any gap.

I see a bullet pass that Love barely saved, an airball on a finger roll attempt, more missed free throws, and the same disorganized defense.

by John Doe on Feb 16, 2010 7:25 PM CST up reply actions

Cool, but...

What assets does Charlotte have to offer? All their best players have bad long term deals, they don’t have too many young guys, and we own their pick.

by John Doe on Feb 16, 2010 7:24 PM CST up reply actions

+1

Chandler has negative value. Augustin plays the same position as Nash, and Dragic has shown just as much promise as a potential replacement.

by John Doe on Feb 16, 2010 7:26 PM CST up reply actions

I've learned...

…to never say the Suns won’t do anything. If they’re looking to cut costs and flip assets, this could work for them.

by Oceanary on Feb 16, 2010 7:28 PM CST up reply actions

Actually just one

A player option I think. So this would cut costs for the suns by a little over $2 million this year, and either $12 million next year, or they have a very valuable trade asset.

Obviously this would make them far less competitive though

by Oceanary on Feb 16, 2010 7:32 PM CST up reply actions

But it doesn't really cut costs

Chandler is owed $12.6 million next year, and he’s approaching 30 and constantly injured. I feel like a similarly sized expiring contract would be way more preferable.

by John Doe on Feb 16, 2010 7:33 PM CST up reply actions

The only other expiring they're being offered...

…is Ilguaskus’. So not much of a difference in the situation. It just comes down to whether they like Augustin or Hickson more.

Although if they really cared about winning, they’d be all over the Heat’s offer. The fact they aren’t kinda tells me they’re thinking money, not wins.

by Oceanary on Feb 16, 2010 7:36 PM CST up reply actions

The only *other* expiring?

Who is the first expiring? Certainly not Chandler. He’s an expiring the same way Eddy Curry is.

So it comes down to whether they like Augustin and paying an extra $12.6 million next season or Hickson. I’m going to go ahead and say this Charlotte idea has no legs.

by John Doe on Feb 16, 2010 7:43 PM CST up reply actions

It's getting reported on local TV in NC I guess

So it sounds like more than just speculation.

I guess it’s mainly a point of teams not always doing the “logical” thing. Hickson gives them something to build with now. Chandler gives them something to trade with later, plus Augustin.

I mean, again, if they wanted wins, they’d take Beasley from the Heat. Same thing as the Cleavland deal, except a better player.

by Oceanary on Feb 16, 2010 7:47 PM CST up reply actions

From what Ford and Stein are saying, Beasley is on the table

But for some reason, the Suns don’t want him. Maybe they’re worried about his off court trouble…? I dunno. But the offer I’ve seen most places is Beasley, Haslem, and some combination of minor expirings and draft picks.

I think there’s a couple deals out there that don’t include Beasley too….everyone is saying the Heat are going all out on this, so my guess is they’ll deal anyone on the roster except Wade if that’s what it takes.

by Oceanary on Feb 16, 2010 7:55 PM CST up reply actions

That's true.

It’s not always completely logical. If the Beasley offer is legitimate, they’d be crazy to go for one centered around Hickson or Augustin.

by John Doe on Feb 16, 2010 7:51 PM CST up reply actions

Beasley is bat shit crazy. Lots of potential, but that psyche is always going to be a problem. I don’t know if I would take that risk.

by Jaughn on Feb 16, 2010 7:54 PM CST up reply actions

There are a billion trade threads.

Can we keep this thread about the actual game?

by Menyun3 on Feb 16, 2010 7:55 PM CST up reply actions

The nice thing about SportsNation comment boards

Is that they keep replies on the same topic clustered together, making them easy to find if you want to read them, and easy to ignore if you don’t. There’s nothing wrong with finding something interesting to talk about during halftime.

Anyway, Beasley has way way way more trade value than Hickson and Augustin, character issues or not.

by John Doe on Feb 16, 2010 8:02 PM CST up reply actions

They better make a run at Jersey...

Flynn

really does have good vision and facilitation skills in the open court. I think that’s a sign that he can get there in the half-court too.

by LoveTo on Feb 16, 2010 7:32 PM CST reply actions

I think he'd be a lot better...

…if someone could just get him to settle down. He tries to force a lot of stuff, rather than letting the game come to him and taking what the defense gives him.

by Oceanary on Feb 16, 2010 7:36 PM CST up reply actions

Ya...

Flynn took what could have been a 10 point halftime lead and turned it into a tie…

by Oceanary on Feb 16, 2010 7:42 PM CST up reply actions

Isn’t that what happens to all rookies? Getting the game to slow down for them and take what the defense gives them.

by Jaughn on Feb 16, 2010 7:44 PM CST up reply actions

Is it just me...

..or are we looking like the SSOL Suns? Seems like Flynn is in constant attack mode and not setting up the triangle – but he logged 14 minutes so Rambis likely isn’t against it. I wonder if they’ve re-emphasized pace and unleashed Jonny a little bit? Play triangle with Ramon and Al and run like hell with Flynn and our ‘shooters’.

'It's just noise coming out of an ugly scientist.' Michael Scott

by CaliWolf on Feb 16, 2010 7:42 PM CST reply actions

No Phil Jackson team has ever run the triangle 100% of the time. I remember hearing Jackson say he runs it 60% of the time. It is just a way to get every player involved in the offense, especially role players that can get their own shot. Rambis and Kahn wants to take the easy buckets in transition, so they push the ball as much as they can. They also want to take use some isos to take advantage of Jefferson’s scoring ability on the block. It is about being flexible.

by Jaughn on Feb 16, 2010 7:53 PM CST up reply actions

I get it, but

there seems to be a distinct shift. Not sure we ever get into the triangle with Jonny.

Anybody ever notice...

The +/- on ESPN’s box scores is completely unreliable while the game is in progress.

Easy example, it’s halftime, the score is tied. Either Flynn or Sessions was in the game the entire time, while never being on the court together, as evidenced by their minutes played (15 + 9 = 24). Flynn has a -3, and Sessions has a +1. Where’d the extra +2 go?

by John Doe on Feb 16, 2010 7:49 PM CST reply actions

Yahoo's boxscores don't have that issue.

They also refresh play-by-play. Theirs says -3 for Flynn, +3 for Sessions.

by LoveTo on Feb 16, 2010 7:52 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, Yahoo is solid.

I really dislike using ESPN for anything more than unintentionally hilarious polls.

I created an account so I could share my displeasure with his ability to run a pick and roll. I’ll bet rubio can make a pass to the 4 off a pick and roll. I’d also like to believe that rubio makes easy passes on fast breaks to reward guys for running the floor. Also, its likely that he was drafted more for his skills than his charisma. I’ll wait for ricky, if it is promised that flynn is expected to be no more than a jason terry type. When I started this, it was a tied game. Huh.

Has anyone else ever had that experience

where the stream you’re watching freezes just as a pass is going to Corey Brewer’s man at the top of the key and Brewer is in mid-sprint trying to get back to him from somewhere in the paint?

And do you dare to dream that when the live picture comes back you’ll see Corey with the ball, streaking to the other basket for a climate-changing dunk?

And then the stream resumes and we’re down by two more points.

Anyone else?

I could see the Grizzlies giving up on this season and moving Rudy Gay now, so they don’t have to take on as much money at the trade deadline and hopefully the Sixers make Iguodala available. I would love to see those wings with Brewer coming off the bench.

I think Miami says 'No.'

They could sign an Amare, Bosh, or Boozer in the offseason without having to take on Curry’s contract. New York isn’t contributing enough value to the deal to justify moving Curry anyway. Jordan Hill just isn’t that good, and the insurance savings on Mobley’s contract don’t mean as much when they’re only 1/3 of a season.

I don’t think any Phoenix fan wants to see them dump Amare for peanuts, but every trade scenario is based on the premise that they would do so. Getting out of the last year of Richardson’s contract isn’t a particularly good return for an All-Star big man, but I at least saw the logic of it.

The real issue is that New York is contributing negative value overall. I like the idea of combing the Amare and T-Mac rumors, but the trade would nonetheless work better with New York phased out of it.

Was gone for awhile

so I didn’t see Wolves win a few in a row. I saw where Hollins had nice numbers, how?

He played well against the Clippers, Knicks, and Mavs.

The Clippers didn’t have Kaman. The Knicks are similar to the Wolves in that they play no defense and are lazy on offense a lot. Against the Mavs, he was mostly matched up against Dirk who settles for jumpers and didn’t abuse Hollins down low.
