Move Big Al Now!

And here's why -  Right now there are 11 teams who have now or will have a significant need for a PF this summer.

There are 4 decent PF's available in Free Agency this summer  (Bosh, Amare, Boozer, Lee) and 4 decent PF prospects in the draft (Favors, Cousins, Davis, Monroe).  These 8 players will effectively satisfy the PF need of the 8 most desperate teams for at least a year.   There are some other PF's in the draft that might fit the need at PF (Aminu, Patterson, a few others).   At least one of these guys will hit.

Which means that this summer only 2 teams will be remotely interested in trading for a PF.  Right now there are 11 teams with PF being an open question mark and team need.

And of course I'm in the camp that doesn't believe Al is a building block, retards the team's development and is redundant with Pekovic.

Kahn should make these 5 offers right now and accept the first that responds:

Indiana:  Granger for AlJeff  (highly unlikely)

Charlotte:  Gerald Wallace (and filler) for AlJeff  (somewhat unlikely)

NJ:  Simmons expiring contract and NJ's 1st pick for AlJeff (unlikely)

Bulls:  Noah + bad contract (salmons or Hinrich) for AlJeff  (feasible)

Wash:  Miller's expiring contract and Wash 1st pick for AlJeff  (feasible)

If no one bites, there is a little time to get creative with other offers.  But I can't see Al bringing back anything near this value in the Summer.

I follow your thinking, but...

deny your premises. Lets say there are 11 teams with real PF needs. You suggest there are 8 players who could naturally fill those positions, leaving 3 remaining positions available for trading.

I think this is poorly thought out. Big Al is far more valuable than any of the guys in the draft because he is proven. That leaves us with 4 places set and 7 left open.

Then to your list of available free agents. You suggest 4 are going to be available (Bosh, Amare, Boozer, and Lee). Bosh and Amare are comparable to Big Al, probably a hair bit better. Boozer is old and is getting beat out of Utah by Paul Milsap. David Lee is undersized. So, there are really only two spots that get filled before Big Al can be traded. Leaving 9 spots (teams) to trade with.

That 9 teams! I think Kahn will find a way.

Anyway, I am still holding out hope we win the lottery and trade Big Al and Rubio’s rights to NJ for Brook Lopez and the right to draft Evan Turner. My fingers are crossed ;)

"Big Al is far more valuable than any of the guys in the draft because he is proven"

and five years closer to the end of his career and being paid $50 million while the Wolves try to get to the 8th seed in the West.

by PoorDick on Feb 17, 2010 4:21 PM CST up reply actions

I think we have been in rebuilding moce too long

Adding Al to a good team could make them a great team. That’s where the proven comes in. If the other team was in our position of re-building then your point about youth comes into play.

by pablo85 on Feb 17, 2010 4:28 PM CST up reply actions

Uhh,

the Wolves have 13 wins with 7 weeks to go in the season, one good player who’s 25, another who’s 21, and an okay rookie guard and scrawny wing.

We’re nowhere near being done rebuilding. In fact, we’ve only just begun.

by PoorDick on Feb 17, 2010 4:30 PM CST up reply actions

I didn't mean we were done re-building...

I meant because we have been in re-building so long that we approach every other team from the same vantage point as we are coming from: re-building…my suggestion is that if a team in the 6 to 8 seed range could acquire Al they have a shot at moving to the 1, 2,3 range.

by pablo85 on Feb 17, 2010 4:33 PM CST up reply actions

Let me clarify...

I’m not saying Lee, Boozer or the picks are or will be better than Al. What I’m saying is that any team that has those guys won’t feel a burning desire to find another PF since they will already have a decent/promising one on the roster.

Think of it as a Wolves fan. If Devin Harris or Rondo became available, we T-Wolf fans wouldn’t feel the same sense of urgency to get a deal done as another team with a big hole at PG.

by gill0137 on Feb 17, 2010 4:47 PM CST up reply actions

Also have to take into account

that the guys who take up a spot in FA, are also opening up a spot in FA.

by Mplax on Feb 17, 2010 5:10 PM CST up reply actions

I did...

Thus my qualifier that 11 teams need a PF now or this summer. I include Phoenix as one of my 11 teams that need a PF. Yes they have Amare now, but they aren’t secure in having him. If PHO resigns Amare, they become one of the 8 teams who address the need through Free Agency.

This is also true for Toronto even though they have Bosh… for now.

No to every trade

other than that Nets one—I must admit I rang the same one up a week ago, intrigued by the notion of some combo of Wall/Turner/Cousins, five years younger than Al, and leaving 3-4$ mill per year more to spend on salary elsewhere.

Also, Washington can’t trade that pick this year, can they?

by PoorDick on Feb 17, 2010 4:20 PM CST reply actions

Yes, they can, I think

I think the rule is that you can’t trade 2 consecutive picks prior to the first of them being executed. In other words, they couldn’t trade 2010 and 2011 first rounders now, but they can trade their 2010 first rounder now.

I think.

by Eric in Madison on Feb 17, 2010 4:28 PM CST up reply actions

Whoa whoa whoa

I’m as upset as anybody about Rubio not coming over right away. But to flat-out EXECUTE the guy? No way.

Let’s wait until 2011.

by PoorDick on Feb 17, 2010 4:32 PM CST up reply actions

That's the thing

If it ever even has to happen at all, it’s probably a better idea to trade Al for flexibility and future assets than it is for a lateral move in talent at another position.

by nja700 on Feb 17, 2010 4:58 PM CST up reply actions

only trade i would do is Danny Granger

by Micah Asleson on Feb 17, 2010 4:22 PM CST reply actions

Great Post

I imagine you’ll get lots of flack from this from fellow posters who say no to almost every proposed A-Jeff trade. Because God forbid you want to break up a team that’s 13-41 and just got blown out by a crappy Detroit team and whose best player may or may not come in over in 2 years.

There are many great NBA Team Blogs, but a common thread is for posters to wildly overrate their own crappy team (Hi Golden State). Solid Stuff

by Son of Gerald Green on Feb 17, 2010 5:33 PM CST reply actions

I second this comment

I was really surprised that Chicago offered Luol Deng and Tyrus Thomas for Jefferson. Even more surprised we rejected the trade. I suppose if we wait until summer maybe we can get a better offer. But make no mistake about it, that trade with the Bulls makes this team better, and there is no guarantee we ever get a better return for Jefferson. The most patently obvious thing the Wolves lack is length, athleticism, and defense. Deng and Thomas would instantly fill that need. The only players we have been talking about in the draft have been shooting guard (Turner and Johnson) and big men, so adding Deng does not change the draft strategy.

Don’t really know what Wolves fans want, but as a season ticket holder I can’t stand watching Jefferson anymore. Jefferson is the #1 overpaid bum out there. If I were Al Jefferson I’d be heartbroken that I wasn’t traded to the Bulls (a potential playoff team), not happy with sitting on the Wolves (as he publicly stated) where I’m eventually going to get pushed out by Kevin Love. He’s a bum, bum, bum.

by Mike B. on Feb 18, 2010 6:48 AM CST up reply actions

Big Al is a bum?

What a stupid comment. Stop putting everything on Al’s shoulders. It’s not his fault we have no wings or shooters or very much talent at all. This team is HORRIBLE and it has NOTHING to do with Al Jefferson. Calling him a bum is an emotionally driven overstatement. Deng and Thomas is a joke offer. If you wanna call Al overpaid, Deng is easily more overpaid. Thomas is an athletic bust. What a joke.

Did you watch the game last night?

Who were the many WIzards stars surrounding Blechh and McGee?

by PoorDick on Feb 18, 2010 8:07 AM CST up reply actions

Big Al

was 8-10 in 25 minutes of action. Yeah, it’s definitely his fault that we lost.

I am one of the Jefferson fans

but the Chicago, NJ, and Washington trades all have potential, though I might want to wait until after the lottery.

A rube chatter has the idea:

GSW rejected Monta for Mayo.

What about
Jefferson to GSW
Mayo, Steven Hunter to MN
Ellis to MEM

by callmeishmael on Feb 17, 2010 8:18 PM CST reply actions

Didn't expect to see this here

That was me but I said Mayo and Biedrins to MN with Ellis going to Memphis and Jefferson and Charlotte’s 1st to GSW. I was mostly messing around and didn’t put a lot of thought into it. However, if Memphis was dumb enough to offer Mayo for Ellis and GS was dumb enough to turn it down then anything is possible when getting our three front offices together.

by Bethke on Feb 17, 2010 9:34 PM CST up reply actions

At first no....

After thinking about it for a bit I don’t think this is a bad trade. Like jordanmowbray said during the game.

PG – Ricky Rubio/Jonny Flynn
SG – O.J Mayo
SF – Corey Brewer… (eventually Turner)
PF – Kevin Love
C – Ryan Hollins… (eventually Aldrich or Whiteside) Who knows, maybe Darko will turn into a stud here…

by Far East on Feb 17, 2010 9:47 PM CST up reply actions

Short lineup

until Rubio and Turner get here. Darko fills a nice hole for the short-term.

I like a lineup like that though. If we get Biedrins, that would be nice for size-factor. Darko, Love, and Biedrins would leave a little something to be desired though.

by Mplax on Feb 17, 2010 10:03 PM CST up reply actions

The Problem

has been identified we’re not giving Ryan Hollins enough minutes. We need to unload Jefferson now!!

by Jose Cordoba on Feb 17, 2010 10:43 PM CST up reply actions

I'm all for shoving around these deck chairs

and that line-up sounds kind of young and fun, but especially until Turner arrives, they would lose games 110-65. Not because individually they’re bad (well, Hollins is bad. Not the way you kids use the term, either). But there’s really one sort-of scorer (Mayo) and another sort-of defender (Brewer). Everybody else is good at a secondary or tertiary skill.

by PoorDick on Feb 17, 2010 11:31 PM CST up reply actions

Biedrins was in my proposal

but another benefit to getting Mayo for Al is that it reduces the necessity of getting a top 2 pick because options like Cousins, Favors, Monroe and Aldrich start looking much more appealing. Pekovic as well. Whatever, I don’t see it happening in the next 15 hours.

by Bethke on Feb 17, 2010 10:37 PM CST reply actions

Nothing until this summer

The right offer just doesn’t exist yet.
