Ronnie Brewer to Memphis

The Utah Jazz have agreed to trade Ronnie Brewer to the Memphis Grizzlies for a protected 2010 first-round pick, a source close to the situation told ESPN.com on Thursday.

The deal gives the Grizzlies yet another athletic swingman and allows the Jazz to save money.

Utah had a bit of a logjam at Brewer's position. His $2.7 million salary was essentially double that because the Jazz are over the luxury-tax threshold.

Isn't this a trade we should have done?  I realize Ronnie is having a down year, but folks on this site have long talked about Brewer as a potential "poor man's" Rudy Gay.  I would think we'd give Utah their pick back for him.

Couldn't match Memphis' offer

which was essentially to take Brewer’s contract completely off their hands without any money coming back.

Yes

The Wolves are still over the cap and can’t trade a pick for a player.

I totally agree that we should of done this deal. But I guess we have bigger things on our hands… like 7footers with tremendous downside!

As pointed out by others

Wolves couldn’t make this deal because they are still over the cap….

"I would think we'd give Utah their pick back for him."

We’re gonna use that pick to draft a PG that we’ll later trade for cash considerations.

Yeah, I know.

If only we’d traded him for a future first, we could have had FOUR this year! I wonder how we got all three in the first place…

by LoveTo on Feb 18, 2010 8:10 PM CST up reply actions

actually I believe

that was Calathes. Lawson was traded for a pick.

by TheEvilProfessor on Feb 18, 2010 8:11 PM CST up reply actions

Memphis can do this because they are under the cap.

It feels like an opportunity lost but perhaps it’s also a good illustration of why preserving cap space could be worthwhile next season.

The lux tax line will fall again and there will likely be more fire sales.

Good points.

If this were to occur at the same time next year, I’m thinking they would jump on it (all other things being equal).

Solid addition for Memphis

I think that this move is a great one for the Griz. Brewer will be a great fit on that team. He is a Jerry Sloan coached player who does things the right way. A great pick up for Memphis. As for us, well, I have always like Ronnie Brewer. He probably would have been fine for us too. Perhaps he would get the minutes that are being given to Wilkins or Pavlovic. Good for Ronnie though, getting to play with a playoff team.

The Jazz....I don't even know what to say....

They spent three years hand-grooming Brewer to be the kind of athletic, defensive wing they wanted. And now they ship him out to save money. What is that? At the least, this should be CJ Miles…

I can’t imagine Deron Williams is happy about this. Brewer was his favorite target when the Jazz went in motion. The guy is a master of the backdoor cut.

Honestly with C. Brewer playing so much better

R Brew isn’t as high on my list ass he once was. I can’t see him and Corey on the court together they’re the same player. Still nice to see that teams are just giving pieces away to save some money, shows are future.

Who called him a "poor man's Rudy Gay"?

Not to sound petty or anything, but just for the sake of clarification, I really don’t see a lot of similarity in their games aside from being athletic SFs.

Jerry Zgoda thought this deal

might be an indication that the Griz are getting prepared for life w/o Rudy Gay.

by Rumblebee on Feb 18, 2010 9:51 PM CST reply actions

I think there's a good chance Gay will leave this summer, but...

….I also think that this move was made 99% because the Grizzlies are looking to make a playoff run and they knew their bench sucked.

I can just picture

Rudy standing next to Donnie Walsh holding a Knicks singlet with a grin that can only be caused by a max deal.

That's only part of it

First things first, they have awful depth at guard. They really need PG help, but that’s another story. Jamaal Tinsley is on that team, as an example – I know, I know, we have players like Sasha Pavlovic getting minutes. Pot calling the kettle marginally worse at basketball.

Also, I don’t think it means that they’re resigned to the notion that they don’t have much of a chance at keeping Gay. They’ve made moves that will give them more space to sign him. Brewer’s probably just insurance in case that happens; cost-effective insurance at that. If Gay gets signed for big money, they’ll still have a solid and relatively cheap replacement waiting in the wings in addition to more cap space. Either way they’re in a solid situation at the wing.

Look for the Wolves..

…to make this sort of trade next year at this time. They should have some extra cap space to make a lopsided deal.

I noticed that

But with the salary they have locked up, their only potential for growth is through the draft, which from where they are picking (other than the Knick’s pick) probably isn’t going to net them enough to get over the top. And with Sloan winding down his career, I’m sure he’d hate to be in his prime when the Jazz go into rebuild mode.
