Why Our Rebounding Has Been Terrible

Ryan-hollins_medium

Maybe I should be more specific.

Currently Ryan Hollins has a Rebound Rate of 9.2. Most of you I assume know that that's bad, but do we really know how bad? Let's put it in relative terms...

Since 1946, there have been 1434 Seasons by NBA Centers who have played as many minutes as Ryan Hollins. Of those seasons, only 14 times has a Center managed to post a worse Rebound Rate then Ryan Hollins' 9.2...

14!!!!!!!!!!

Since Ryan Hollins was entered into the starting line-up, he has averaged about 24 minutes/game. Of the 14 centers ahead of Ryan Hollins on the list, only 3 played more minutes/game than Ryan Hollins is currently playing.

So there you have it. If you want to know why our rebounding has been so atrocious recently, look no further then the epically bad rebounder we're currently starting at Center. It's that simple.

Here is the basketball-reference link.

In other news, Kevin Love's Rebound Rate of 21.6 is currently good for the 19th best season by any forward that has played 1000 minutes. That's 19th best out of 3554!!

Been keeping track on another site

of the close race between Hollins’s fouls and rebounds.

He’s currently committed 146 fouls and collected 147 rebounds on the year.

The rebounds just caught up last game.

Obviously a bad contract...

on the bright side he can put up spectacular dunks. I had hopes for him, but we need to get rid of him and his contract.

After looking at the numbers

You could make an argument that the only 7 footers worse then Hollins that have ever played the game are Jason Collins and Brad Sellars. He’s that bad.

by Blakeley on Feb 21, 2010 9:42 AM CST up reply actions

apparently Rambis does not agree

At one level of insanity does a coach start and play for 24 minutes a game a player who he views as historically bad and a lost cause?

Clearly the Wolves still feel there is hope for Hollins and are looking for more information to make a decision on his future.

It bothers me that there appears to be such a disparity between the opinions (and statistical evidence) on this board and the actions of the coaching staff. It’s one of three things

1. The board and its stats are borderline useless
2. the coaching stuff is borderline awful
3. the coaching staff has private information on Ryan Hollins potential that would make the staff’s decisions ever so clear. Upon its revelation everyone would agree that YES, Mr. Hollins should definitely get more burn than Mr. Love.

White their might be a disparity between the opinions on the board and the actions of the coaching staff...

There is no disparity between the actions of the coaching staff and the Wolves current win/loss record. The more Kurt Rambis decides to play un-productive players (Hollins, Flynn, and Pavlovic being the main three)…the more we lose.

I support playing Flynn because I believe his time on the court is worth the investment. What I don’t support is the playing of Hollins at the expense of a rested Kevin Love.

A thought on the Coaching Staff...

I do believe that Kurt Rambis has kind of gotten a free pass because everyone expected us to be terrible. It’s hard for me to point to any examples of Kurt Rambis making a change during a game that has led to the Wolves playing better. Can anyone else remember a time that Kurt Rambis has done something during a game that left them saying “Thank Goodness Rambis did ‘fill in the blank’?”

I wouldn’t be surprised if Wolves fans start turning on him once we get better players. We’re stuck with him for at least 3 years, so I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

by Blakeley on Feb 21, 2010 2:07 PM CST up reply actions

But that's not really true

If he was hands-off, then he’d let his best players play their way through funks…

Yet, every time Love or Jefferson isn’t playing at their “best”, Rambis ends up yanking them and giving them a total of 24 minutes.

by Blakeley on Feb 22, 2010 11:55 AM CST up reply actions

Good point.

I was just tossing out an idea. Most of the in-game adjustments do seem to be punitive.

by TheH on Feb 22, 2010 2:34 PM CST up reply actions

It's frustrating though...

Because I do agree with you in that I think that Kurt Rambis believes that sitting down during the game is what it takes to follow the Phil Jackson school of In game coaching.

"Gambles"

First-time GM + practically first-time coach + frugal owner = taking a chance on an unproven/unwanted player, and then giving him more than enough time to prove your superior expertise. If you’re right, you’re a genius. If you’re wrong, you get a top three lotto pick and a chance to prove yourself again.

(Note: this generally only works if you have a lot of years left on your guaranteed contract from the aforementioned frugal owner. With only a year or two left, you start overpaying for free agents and trades in an attempt to win your way to an extension).

That rainbow shirt

is a perfect match in taste for his poor rebounding stats.

Do keep in mind that he always is on the court together with either Love or Jefferson. There’s only x amount of rebounds to be had. If you’rer playing together with 2 of the best than it’s obvious there’s not much rebounds left. Coaching staff probably doesn’t ask him to be a rebounder.

Nope

We’re a better rebounding team with him off the court than on, plus Jefferson is rebounding at a career low rate this year. Love is our only elite rebounder, Jefferson is good but not great, and our backcourt and wings are just so-so. No one is taking rebounds from him. He has terrible balance, timing, and hands which means he’s rarely in a position to go up strong to snag a board.

Also...

His rebounding has always been terrible for a Center. Not nearly as bad as this year…but still terrible.

Love doesn't seem like the Kevin Garnett, go snag other player's rebounds type of player

He actually boxes out, making it easier for other guys to rebound.

@ all 3

With Darko grabbing 8 in his 19 minutes and your comments it seems my point has been refuted. Gonna keep an eye on it the next game.

Interesting topic

I give Rambis a little slack here. I believe they really want to give all their young players significant minutes. That’s the best way to evaluate them. None of the young guys who isn’t here next season will be able to gripe about not getting a chance.

by Rumblebee on Feb 21, 2010 4:41 PM CST reply actions

Still doesn't explain players like Sasha getting minutes

There’s a long list of players / people who I’d rather see on the floor than Sasha Pavlovic. Alando Tucker. Bracey Wright. Natalie Kane. Bill Beise. PoorDick. The guy who plays the fiddle in the skyway…

Hey but Pavlovic is our European sharpshooter!

Too bad he can’t shoot…
