I was thinking the same thing

What will the game wrap be this evening? Korean cooking? Funny youtube clips? Podcast on electrotherapy for depressed sports fans?

But, alas, here I am getting ready to watch the game.

Poor interior defense

this time by Portland.

It was a nice touch to send out Darko with Jefferson early, have Portland react to a potential mismatch and run out a big lineup that rarely plays together, and bench LMA who had been killing Hollins.

Kevin Love and Jonny Flynn

The future of our franchise… annnnd… both best suited to come off the bench. I’m finally just admitting it: If the goal is championship-caliber play, we are looking for starters at all five positions, with the possible exceptions of Al Jefferson (if he gets healthy) and Corey Brewer (if he is the fourth offensive option [tops] on the floor).

by TheH on Feb 27, 2010 8:06 PM CST reply actions

This franchise is a long way from competing at all with the current roster

They need at least one star quality player who can be the go-to guy and score as well as one other stud. Love maxes out his natural talent and hoop smarts, but he has some serious limitations when he starts working outside his normal talent parameters. Flynn needs more time but the pounding of the ball into the court like some crazed mafia character in a Scorcese film nervously chomping on his gum while shaking down some poor sap for protection money has got to stop.

"Never make predictions, especially about the future." Casey Stengel

by uncle rico on Feb 27, 2010 8:12 PM CST up reply actions

Best case..

Love, Al, Corey, Flynn and get a lot better. Rubio is the real deal, we draft a stud this year, and acquire another one this summer or next with our cap space and secondary assets. In theory we can have 7 very, very good players including one or two possible studs. I know. It isn’t all going to happen. But, if Rubio is that good and we hit the draft this year…we should be able to win some playoff series in a few years.

'It's just noise coming out of an ugly scientist.' Michael Scott

by CaliWolf on Feb 27, 2010 8:13 PM CST up reply actions

I agree on most of this...

… but in terms of the length and athleticism necessary to compete in the postseason? I honestly don’t see anything resembling a championship core growing from what we have. On a championship-caliber squad, Kevin Love gets his minutes off the bench, punishing a second string and giving surprisingly long third-quarter stints when he’s effective (ala Odom). I think Love will always be effective, but I’m not sure it’s the type of effective that wins intense playoff series. Could be wrong, hope I am. But I’m starting to sober up on how far away from it all we are.

by TheH on Feb 27, 2010 8:23 PM CST up reply actions

Athletic seems to be Kahn's plan

Surround Al with some better athleticism, he may be more effective and worth keeping. But he’s not the #1. Love comes off the bench and sticks to what he does best. Still, lots of missing pieces and the need for players that will either take some good luck to draft or some conniving trades to acquire.

For whom?

As much as we’ve been down on him lately, are you ready to cut all losses from the KG trade? A real question. This team can still be blown up. But with other pieces in place, Al could do well and his defensive liabilities could be minimized.

"Never make predictions, especially about the future." Casey Stengel

by uncle rico on Feb 27, 2010 8:45 PM CST up reply actions

I am...

..if they were interested in running a traditional up tempo pick and roll offense with some good shooters on the outside and some real sized guards, I think Love/Jefferson could have worked. With the Triangle bit, and a system built on wing play, I think it’s hopeless.

I feel like he's part of a huge draft-day deal.

Something to land us two top-five picks and come out with a Turner-Favors combo or something.

by LoveTo on Feb 27, 2010 8:46 PM CST up reply actions

Al isn't worth a top five pick

I know we got the 5th for Foye and Miller, but something tells me no team is going to be that dumb. I’m assuming that you’d trade Rubio too, and that might be too much.

by KMils on Feb 27, 2010 8:48 PM CST up reply actions

I was thinking something along the lines of...

We get the second pick (fingers crossed. HARD.).

Then package Al, the Charlotte pick, and maybe Flynn or Sessions to move up for number four or five.

by LoveTo on Feb 27, 2010 8:49 PM CST up reply actions

Hmmm.

Basically giving up a 15th pick (that’s even more likely to be a bust) and an expendable point guard in order to switch Jefferson into a cheaper, younger, more athletic replacement big guy.

I disagree.

Well shoot

Who DIDN’T see him not being good? It was a whack draft pick.

It depends on how much faith one has in the management’s ability to pick someone else. If one thinks they got good judgement getting a top 5 pick for Big Al would be worth it.

by Mortimer on Feb 27, 2010 11:00 PM CST up reply actions

I bet if he had fallen to #5

the Wolves would have taken him, and 20 of the 30 GMs in the NBA would as well.

by Rumblebee on Feb 27, 2010 11:26 PM CST up reply actions

You're right, he likely woulda'

And he could still develop into a good defensive big.

But he always had high bust potential, because he’s so skinny, weak, lacks aggressiveness on defense (his calling card) and a negatively skilled offensive game… he’s a project.

There will always be guys who don’t do well who are taken in the top 5. But, you consistently got a great chance at a very good player in the top 5, year in and year out.

by Mortimer on Feb 27, 2010 11:34 PM CST up reply actions

And Kwame Brown, Michael Olowokandi, etc, etc...

It’s not sure fire, but looking at the charts on http://www.82games.com/barzilai1.htm, it’s pretty clear where the value in the draft lies, and it’s top five.

Plus, Thabeet deserves to be in the D-league, no matter where he got drafted. He needs to bulk out. If he works out though… Dikembe Mutumbo was pretty good for a pretty long time.

by KMils on Feb 28, 2010 12:39 AM CST up reply actions

If you run the Washington Wizards

and you realize Arenas is unmovable the next year or two with his contract and issues, would you rather trade for Jefferson or pick Cole Aldrich with the #5?

by Rumblebee on Feb 27, 2010 11:25 PM CST up reply actions

That would be nice

but I think some of the optimism here expressed at getting both Turner and Wall or one of the two and another top pick is akin to hanging a Farrah Fawcett poster on my dorm room wall back in the day and hoping to get just as lucky with her. A bad and sexist analogy but it hopefully gets the point across.

"Never make predictions, especially about the future." Casey Stengel

by uncle rico on Feb 27, 2010 8:53 PM CST up reply actions

It would be hard to pull off.

But Kahn says in no uncertain terms that he has plans to add significant talent to the roster soon. But he also probably has some cost restrictions from Glen Taylor. Coming out of the draft with two stud picks by using the bevy of assets he’s accumulated seems like the logical route to me.

I think getting Wall and Turner is a pipe dream, because nobody’s giving up either of those two for anything we can offer. But outside of the top two, some teams could be looking to move out of those picks, so I think getting [Wall/Turner] + [Aldrich/Cousins/Favors] is pretty possible, and it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if that’s what Kahn is aiming for.

Odenized

by CroRupt on Feb 27, 2010 9:19 PM CST reply actions

He's Randolph without the off court problems and a bit more size

Jeff is a solid guy, but he can’t defend or pass well. He gives you a bit more size than Randolph, but otherwise it’s a pretty good comparison. This year is tough since he’s coming back from injury. Most of us around here don’t believe he is a long-term piece of the puzzle. Kahn really wants to go uptempo, with athleticism, speed, passing, and motion. He just doesn’t fit the vision.

Dear Canis Hoopus community:

Very sincere thanks for a great year of in-game conversations and between-game banter. I simply have to be done watching this horseshit for the season and must content myself with glancing at the occasional box score. Even though following this team is my one real escape from work, it’s just too much. It’s just too frustrating. Best of luck fighting the good fight, and I hope to reappear as the draft nears. Maybe a post or two in the meantime, but probably not much. This really is a great blog and a great online community and has been a fun thing to get involved in this year.

by TheH on Feb 27, 2010 9:43 PM CST reply actions

Dear TheH

It’s a shame to see you go; I hope you’ll reconsider.

We only have to do this 21 more times. Then there is the lottery draw and the draft itself is only 116 days away.

It’s a hard road, but I consider being a fan of the Minnesota Timberwolves a character building experience.

The heartbreakingly poor construction of this squad, the interminable trading to get future salaries off the books, buying out Antonio Daniels so he could get more burn somewhere else (how’s that going, btw) with the centrepiece of this season of disaster and futility the knowledge that Mark Blount is sitting in his abode in Florida, presumably corpulent, collecting the equivalent of 40 years average earnings to do absolutely and utterly stuff all.

Every now and then a victory occurs, perhaps even a streak. Like a Ryan Gomes sponsored defibrillator applied to a dying man, the fanbase is briefly electrified before reality sets in and our optimism again flatlines.

Can I convince you to stay? Can I convince me to stay? All we have to offer is friendship and the knowledge that Canis Hoopus proves one of life’s truisms – misery indeed enjoys company.

Just turned on some basketball for the first time tonight

Oracle Arena in Oakland is at least half empty. That’s sad. One of the absolutely great NBA markets. Wish brah would sell the team. To me. Or buy me some groceries at least.

by museum on Feb 27, 2010 10:06 PM CST reply actions

Sorry about our announcers tonight, guys

They were being much too mocking and taking too much glee in the relatively easy win. All I can say to defend ‘em is we ain’t had too many easy wins because of the injuries and whatnots but that’s an awful excuse. They were acting like douches, and I remarked in the Blazers Edge GDT that Minny fans gotta be hating them.

You guys saw an exaggerated version of why we love Batum… he’s an awesome passer, can handle the ball, our best perimeter defender, great rebounder, very smart player who studies the gametapes and scouting reports… we love him. I would be fine trading anyone on the team aside from Oden, Roy, and Batum, even though his raw stats might not show his ability yet.

I really, really hope you guys trade Big Al for a nice piece that makes more sense. If the triangle is still the long term goal, it seems like Kevin Love’s all-round offensive game makes a lot more sense.

Al Jefferson doesn’t seem selfish, but the lack of passing ability in a big that the offense runs through, or any sort of interior defense seems like poison. It is understandable his numbers are down because he’s coming back from an injury, but his playing style doesn’t seem like a good fit for a team who wants to win.

Again… very sorry about Mike Rice and Mike Barrett. The mocking of your team and lack of seriousness with how they approached the broadcast shows they’ve forgotten where we come from. We were much worse off not that long ago and the laughingstock of the league. We didn’t like dumb announcers talkin’ crap then and we shouldn’t do it now.

Good luck guys, get working on that Big Al trade, pray to the lottery Gods for a high draft pick.

Thanks Blazer fans

Pretty cool of you to come over apologizing for the announcers.

I watch about 50% of the Wolves games on NBA LP, and it is almost always the other team’s feed. It is really eye-opening when you listen from the perspective of the other team.

  • Some announcers are quite good and informative about both teams. These are the most fun as you get the “outsiders’ scouting report” on your team.
  • Some announcers seem to believe they are still working in the 1980s, when their voices would only be heard by home town fans. No one will hear the mocking and ridiculing of the other team right? I was amazed how poorly the Bulls announcers were earlier this year, mocking even our mascot.
  • Some announcers seem to take their jobs lightly given how little they know about the other team. Mispronouncing names, giving incorrect “strengths/weaknesses”, etc.
  • Some announcers are completely biased and whine in a partisan way the entire time (Celtics / Tommy).
  • Some announcers are complete syncophants of the home team, lavishing praise on every player, play, and gesture. The OKC guys were that way during a game I watched a few days ago. “Look at the glorious bead of sweat dripping down the broad shoulders of Green! It might be truely the most noble drip ever excreted.”

Since u have two picks (if u get the #2 in the lottery)

take Evan Turner with one pick and take Xavier Henry with the other. You have two pg, multiple bigs but no good wings outside of Corey Brewer. If you take both players you should get at least one star wing out of it. If not Xavier Henry, take Greg Monroe as he has the potential to be a great defensive center, although really raw.
