The Griz still move

Memphis Grizzlies at Minnesota Timberwolves, Feb 6, 2010 7:00 PM CST

This is it folks, the biggest game of the year for the Wolves.  At home, vs. a peer who is moving well ahead of them in the rebuilding process...this is a biggie.

Wish i could say the same for...

ILP bunch of clowns those guys. I doubt i will buy it next year – if i pay $200US+ i expect pretty much seamless product.

Gonna be worse if people start watching Wolves games methinks as the stream has been buffering a lot (never happened when they were losing)… (Sigh)

3 assists already for Jonny.

His assist totals have been up consistently lately. Is it just a result of players knocking down jumpers more often?

by LoveTo on Feb 6, 2010 7:29 PM CST reply actions

We're falling in love with the jumpers right now....

That works when we shoot over 50%…. not so much when we shoot under 30%

Ugly shooting in the first quarter.

Hollins?

Is it me or are the Wolves playing better defense lately?

It just seems they’re finally helping each other out and forcing tough threes or difficult shots by the opposing teams

My goodness, Memphis is hot.

We’re getting hands in their face, they just don’t miss. This must be how Dallas felt last night.

That said, I’m really impressed with the way they’re hanging in the game despite that. I think this is further proof that they’re turning something of a corner… Earlier in the year they’d have rolled over and we’d be looking at a Korean food recap.

yup

just waiting for them to start missing…and waiting. if it happens we have a very good chance to win.

Did anyone notice on that last play

Brewer dishes to AL, and Al’s first instinct is to turn and post rather than exploding to the basket for the dunk? Al is an athlete of sorts, but neither Love nor Al have the ability to explode overpoweringly. Hollins does, but he tries to use it even when it won’t work.

Rambis tried to tank by sitting the starting PG and C, but failed and we won anyway. Leaving Al in for the 4th quarter was a terrible move since he was like 1-6 before that. yet again Rambis can’t even pull off a tank job, despite trying.

Zach Randolph shoots threes

Often at clutch moments, too. Best example, from his days with the Clippers:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A13PKLR-HyY

He’s taken 319 of them in his career.

Here, look for yourself:

Looks like he decided in his 5th year that he could shoot that.

Dude’s a sub-.300 three point shooter for his career, and he takes ‘em nonetheless. It’s like in that youtube video I just linked you to; Z-Bo is liable to do the strangest things at big moments…. I’m pretty sure Memphis, with Gay and Mayo on the roster, is not scheming to get Randolph those perimeter looks. ;-)

Yeah.. we gotta have a guy that can score at will, can’t repeat that enough. Love will do more to contribute to a win but he could never score the way Al can.

by SF on Feb 6, 2010 9:39 PM CST up reply actions

Thabeet

Let’s all thank Wallace for taking Thabeet so he wasn’t even an option for us at 5/6.

by TWolvesFanInLA on Feb 6, 2010 9:35 PM CST reply actions

Also, Conley played solid, but Tyreke Evans would make this team pretty tough.

by TWolvesFanInLA on Feb 6, 2010 9:41 PM CST up reply actions

Per 36,

Thabeet is scoring 9, getting 10 boards with 4 blocks, and fouling 6.6 times. He’s a rookie big. He’d be getting more time, but Marc Gasol is freaky efficient, to the tune of a PER above 20 for example.

"Talent" is not static

Players really do improve. So do coaches. It may really be that over the past month, Flynn has begun to understand how to distribute better and Corey Brewer has found his shot. Rambis has changed the rotation and it may help both units to be more effective.

Obviously we’re not championship caliber, but teams do improve without making dramatic changes to their core, just by getting better over time (see, e.g., Memphis this year, Portland over the past few years, Atlanta over the past few years).

by j_dubs on Feb 6, 2010 9:53 PM CST up reply actions

Memphis? Portland?

Both of those franchises have added significant talent over the past few years. Memphis dealt for Randolph, who’s an All Star this season, and added big pieces in the draft. Portland is all about developing young talent, but they’ve added stuff like a #1 overall pick in that time….

"It has come to the editor’s attention that the Herald-Leader neglected to cover the civil rights movement. We regret the omission."

by feral on Feb 6, 2010 10:54 PM CST up reply actions

But winning actual games is cool too
I would be nice to win a championship.. for that we need to add more “HIGH CALIBER” talent to this team… the only way to get talent without giving anything up is in the draft

by Son of Gerald Green on Feb 6, 2010 9:49 PM CST reply actions

Great win, but i have one question

Why didn’t Flynn play? Especially at the end of the Fourth, he has shown time and time again that he makes plays with the game on the line, I did not see the game because i live in Virginia where we are having a blizzard (nothing compared to what i remember experiencing in in the great state of ’Sota), so my league pass was not working, can you please explain this to me?

by AT-360 on Feb 6, 2010 9:51 PM CST reply actions

I see that

but was flynn making a lot of mistakes, because looking at the stats, he didn’t have any TOs, and 5 assists, although he did shoot 2-6, which is crap, but he only got 24 minutes.

by AT-360 on Feb 6, 2010 9:54 PM CST up reply actions

Team leading +19

The offense just clicked with him running the show. He made the whole greater than the sum of the parts, which to me is where Flynn fundamentally struggles. Lots of activity in terms of dribbling, shots, and kickouts, but it doesn’t translate into success for the total unit often enough. Hopefully he gets to that place in the future.

by Rascal Flatts on Feb 6, 2010 9:54 PM CST up reply actions

but to his credit, Flynn apparently recognized this and didn’t seem to be too put out to be on the bench — in fact cheering on his teammates!

by saudagg on Feb 6, 2010 10:32 PM CST up reply actions

They did not disappoint tonight

They came out dead flat at the start of the 3rd quarter and Flynn was the guy pulled. Brewer then went off. I think Jefferson made like 8 shots in a row in the fourth. His best quality is as closer. Love lost a lot of time to fouls and a ankle turn but he hit the clinching three. Most active Wolves crowd this season. Saturday nights are always great crowds. Gay was also sweet tonight.

by Mike B. on Feb 6, 2010 9:57 PM CST reply actions

yeah

…the other wolf…maybe?

by TheEvilProfessor on Feb 6, 2010 9:58 PM CST up reply actions

I'm tellin ya, 10-10-10

You get Rudy Gay to start posting up and getting to the free throw line, and he’s just as good as Melo

by Oceanary on Feb 6, 2010 10:00 PM CST up reply actions

George Karl made a rule for Melo a couple seasons ago he called 10-10-10

For every ten jump shots Melo took, he had to post up ten time and take ten free throws

That’s what turned him from the low percentage gunner he was his first couple years into the beast he is now. The guy is unstoppable because he learned how to score in basically every way possible….play him straight up, he’ll hit jumpers. Play him big, he’ll draw fouls. Play him small, he’ll post up

by Oceanary on Feb 6, 2010 10:05 PM CST up reply actions

absolutely

it will be interesting to see what happens to him this summer.

by TWolvesFanInLA on Feb 6, 2010 10:01 PM CST up reply actions

Gay was good tonight

But his numbers have come back down to earth. Shooting in the mid-40s and 31% on 3’s. I don’t know….he reminds me of some of these other small forwards like Richard Jefferson that never quite put it all together to be anything other than solid volume scorers.

by Rascal Flatts on Feb 6, 2010 10:01 PM CST up reply actions

Same with Mayo

Their lines aren’t all that different. Mayo gets more assists, Gay more rebounds, as it should be at their respective positions. They’re within .010 of each other as shooters, overall. Both playing lots of minutes and being durable.

Gay’s PER: 16.7. Mayo’s: 14.9.

It was a great effort tonight by the Wolves, but “prior performance is no indicator of future results”.

by levi_mn on Feb 6, 2010 10:03 PM CST up reply actions

Randolph is on the way down

He was pathetic tonight. Jefferson absolutely destroyed him. I couldn’t believe how long Lionel Hollins let it go on. Finally he put Gasol back on Al and we had to go elsewhere.

Off Topic Here
Gay’s numbers have come back down to earth. Shooting in the mid-40s and 31% on 3’s. I don’t know

Sorry to go off topic, but another player many in Wolves Nation sought – Brandon Jennings – coming in nicely at a 37% FG percentage

Rookie of the Month in the Eastern Conference, where no other rookie is doing much of anything.

by TWolvesFanInLA on Feb 6, 2010 10:08 PM CST up reply actions

It will be interesting to see how this little win streak affects Kahn’s deadline decisions. I’ve long thought Gomes and Sessions could be moved to a contender (especially after tonight’s nice performances). However, I wonder if Kahn doesn’t sit tight and let the season play out. We’ve all agreed that Gomes salary for next year is probably too high, but he’d be a fantastic back-up to Gay next year in MN.

And assuming we don’t land Wall and Rubio stays in Spain for another year, I’d love to have Sessions back next year.

by TWolvesFanInLA on Feb 6, 2010 10:05 PM CST reply actions

I think with Sessions--as with Gomes--Khan will move them for the right piece.

I’m not saying I expect it to happen, but neither Sessions nor Gomes are in Khan’s long-term master plan. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Gomes shipped to Boston for a draft pick—it works well for both teams; but yes, if we were to sign Gay, Gomes is a great backup. Sessions would be great for LA, BOS, CLE—all need a good, quality, true PG and Sessions could give them that. Again, I’d also love to see him back next year, but he’s not a part of Khan’s desired endstate.

by SF on Feb 6, 2010 10:19 PM CST up reply actions

They can't sign Gay with Gomes around.

Some other salary move would have to be made first. With Gomes on the books, no way do the Wolves have the mojo to ink Gay to a deal Memphis wouldn’t match.

Things were bound to turn at some point

Most of us predicted something along the lines of mid-20s to 30ish wins for this squad. Jefferson + Love and the addition of Sessions was not on paper a sub-20 win squad.

by Rascal Flatts on Feb 6, 2010 10:05 PM CST reply actions

It was the best Jefferson 4th quarter since maybe 2007-2008

I’m thinking the New Jersey or Phoenix game. Also a shout out to Brewer for absolutely sucking in the first half and then shooting lights out in the second.

by Mike B. on Feb 6, 2010 10:06 PM CST reply actions

That was crazy

Two months ago, Corey would have started 1-7 and shot 1-7 again in the second half. Or maybe just not even played.

The kid is improving at an exponential rate

by Oceanary on Feb 6, 2010 10:08 PM CST up reply actions

Gomes and Sessions

Would perfectly fit Memphis’ needs on the bench. Question is whether Memphis has anything they would give up that we would want. Assuming Gay is not available, Thabeet is really the only possibility. And I couldn’t imagine Memphis giving up on that this early. Props out to Gomes tonight as well for mad three point shooting.

So many things can happen—any number of teams can get an injury. Any number of teams could fade during the final months. Any number of random ping pong balls could land for any number of teams. And even after that any number of teams can make good and bad picks. And even after all of that the player we want might fall into our laps. Or, not.

sorry

That was a reply to the ad nauseum “ping pong ball” post. At some point it gets pathological.

Without Brewer and Gomes' little runs tonight

We would have been down by 20 in this game and never would have survived.

Perhaps there could be a separate thread from the game thread

On just Ping Pong Balls. Why they’re usually white, why they go faster the harder you hit them, how they look when there’s a bunch of them being being propelled by the air jets, I’m just spit balling here

Corey's rate of improvement is insane...

I’m going to throw it out there – is he (forgetting the draft and Turner for a while) the starting wing we have been pining for. Give him til the end of this season to gain an understanding of the NBA game, examine his weaknesses/observations and work on them in the offseason – could he be that guy?

Not saying it’s a fait accompli – but given what we have seen so far and don’t forget his pedigree (Key Florida player NCAAF4 MVP) and well documented struggles (confidence/injury) in his rook and soph seasons could he have more in the bag…

Kept this three point streak alive

At least one made three in the last 15 games now

17-5-4-4-0

That’s 17 points, 5 boards, 4 assists, 4 steals and 0 TOs. What a great game from Corey

9 Man Rotation

Seems to be working great.

Sessions was great...

So, because he had a great game, posters immediately are looking for him to be traded, ASAP. And clearly, please DON’T WIN anymore games because we are now a threat to not be the second worst team in the league. Gomes had a great first half, but finished weakly, probably the only thing keeping his name from not being mentioned as not worthy of anything other than a second round draft pick. Be Happy!. We won and we have won several close games by being mentally and physically tougher at the end. Some of the pieces are maturing and they will be joined by new draftees (or old ones, if Pekovic arrives) next year.

w00000000000000000000000000000t, never screamed at my TV that much, EVER. What a comeback, what fighting spirit. Not the best game they played but man was that enjoyable!
