Griz owner Michael Heisley told a group of season ticket holders that the team intends to match any offer Gay might receive as a restricted free agent this summer. Heisley spoke before the game at the team’s annual "State of the Franchise" Chalk Talk where season ticket holders could ask questions.

Of course, this may just be a way of trying
to scare other teams off from making offers. Not that I’m a huge fan.

Gay is now in a great situation
I think a number of teams were hoping to steal him with a lower offer. Heisley’s comment is meant to make sure Gay gets a max type offer. (Which I am betting Heisley will NOT match) Coupled with the trade deadline moves that left more teams with max money than players deserving max money, the odds are pretty good someone will over pay.
Hopefully not us.
Is this a guess
or are you perhaps basing this on a similar strategy that MN has taken about their own players? Speaking of which, have you heard any updates about how Kahn was suprised that no FAs wanted to come here? I’m guessing, with our record, that this is still the case?
How about Kahn getting fired and us getting one of our first choices for GM, Tom Penn? We are fucked, no better way to put it, I really don’t see anything positive coming from this organization with Kahn and Rambis leading it. We have one starter, Jefferson, we have a player that can’t stand our coach, Love, we have an underachieving Top Ten Pick in Flynn, we have another Top Ten Pick, Rubio, that will most likely never play for us or give us fair trade value, we have an improved player, Brewer, that still dribbles wildly, and is vaunted for his D, but isn’t good at D, then we have a PG that has absolutely no shooting ability on a team where the PG has to be a good shooter, Sessions, then we have a player who’s two slow to guard SFs and too small to guard PFs that has absolutely no skill beyond inconsistent shooting, Gomes, I won’t even mention Ellington, he’s at least met some expectations, and there’s Hollins, enough said, tell me people, where’s the hope in this? Love is the only player we might be able to get fair value for, but then, he’s gone, and you’re left with Jefferson, Flynn, Sessions, Player or Pick for Love, (Cousins, Favors, Johnson – assuming we don’t get the 2nd pick), Brewer, Gomes, Charlotte’s Pick (Vesely, Anderson, Alabi, James, George), Utah’s Pick (Robinson, Udoh, Hobson, Ebanks), Ellington, and Hollins, please someone, tell me we have a 30 win team next year with these players?

He probably hopes to set up a team
to get into long-term poor cap situation. Smart if he really doesn’t plan to keep Gay. Also, if Gay gets offered $12 mil per season, the fans will go crazy if he doesn’t match. If Gay get the max, fans will be upset but understand that Gay was overpaid by a desperate big market team.
Pau Gasol>Ruday Gay
They weren’t willing to pay Gasol, so why are they willing to pay for Gay? I suppose Gay is younger, but he’s not as good. On the other hand, no one is offering to trade Mark Gasol for Gay, so maybe the goal is to eventually trade Gay when the burden of his next deal grows too large and the Griz are losing in the first round..

Pau Gasol>Rudy Gay
sorry for the title misspell.

It's also risky...
telling your season ticket holders that you won’t do everything possible to keep a big part of your suddenly competitive, and young, team. Memphis is in a little bind in this situation. They’re best hope is for a someone to sign Gay to a silly offer, and not match because it is for way too much money.

They're paying Zach Randolph Pau Gasol's money
Compare the contracts sometime. At the moment when they acquired Z-Bo, he had basically the same money and duration on the deal as Gasol.
