By some measures, Gay is one of the worst passers in the league. According to Basketball Reference, Gay uses up about 23 percent of Memphis’ possessions, which is a fancy way of saying nearly one-quarter of Memphis possessions end when Gay does something with the ball. That is an above-average number, though it’s down from Gay’s usage rate of 25.6 percent last season. (That drop isn’t surprising, since Memphis traded for Zach Randolph, a high-volume shooter, last summer).

Looking at 82games.com's advanced statistics (which are unfortunately unsortable)
Gay’s passing rating is 2.3. That’s better than Brewer’s 2.1. For the record, Steve Nash is 19.9. Flynn is 7.6, so number of total assists might be a factor in the rating (which has no explanation anywhere that I saw).
Strange blog posting
I don’t think the writer understands usage rate or how to interpret it with other stats. I guess this is the mixed blessing of advanced stats making their way into the mainstream.
However, the bottom line point remains: Kahn should not sign Rudy Gay to any contracts, whether Memphis would match or not. He simply isn’t worth the cap space he will be taking up.
Gay might be a decent but overpaid complementary player to a superstar…but I sure as hell wouldn’t start building a team with him and his salary.
Stay lean, Minnesota, stay lean…until you get The Guy.
Gay isn't all that
Deng is better than him when he stays healthy.
Yes
Zach Randolf is probably the biggest reason that Memphis is above 500, not Gay, and when you consider the comments he made about wanting to be on a winning team, there is no way we can get him without massively overpaying him, and Yes Deng is better than Gay.
To wit on that usage number:
Check out the likes of Dwyane Wade sometime. HIs usage this year so far is 35.4%, highest in the league.
Heck, Al Jefferson:
07-08: 27.5%
08-09: 28.9%
09-10: 24.5%

Yeah, I still wish they would have moved on Ronnie Brewer, who turned out to be quite affordable. He’s having a down year, and he’ll never be a floor spacer, but I like him as that versatile athlete on the wing the triangle requires.
My fear is Kahn is waiting for that perfect scenario to fall before him. In the meantime he’s let a couple useful, very nice-fit type players slip through the cracks (Lawson’s a better fit than Flynn, IMO, or a guy like Ronnie Brewer).
The draft
How different would the draft have been had you been hired in time to have Rambis and his system in place prior to the draft?
He’ll say ‘not at all different’, and he certainly won’t mention any player by name, but maybe something interesting happens.

Please ignore the idiot (me)
Obviously wrong place for this. I’ll re-post in the ask Kahn thread. Sorry.
