Should we consider trading Love?

Willistoncoyote brings up a good point about a possible trade of Love to the Warriors for their pick.  What else would we be interested in?  I know most of the regulars would rather keep Love and trade Al but if nobody wants Al and someone wants Love, we have to explore that possibility, don't we?

I don't know about financial figures and what not but I would start the discussion as

Love + Charlotte pick + 2 second round picks  for Anthony Randolph and GW #1 pick

Maybe, we'd have to take back a bad contract (ie: Magette) to make it work but it would be interesting to have a big SF.

Everything should be on the table

Rubio might be the only asset we should not explore trading because it’s nearly impossible to get full value for him since it’s not clear when he is coming over. Otherwise, Kahn needs to listen to any and all offers. Love has been our best player (until lately), so it would require a pretty nice offer to part with him. My preference would be that he and Rambis hit the re-set button on their relationship this offseason and Love comes back with a new attitude and Rambis comes back with a better appreciation for Love’s skill-sets.

I wouldn't discount it as a possibility

But I also don’t think there were any good points brought up by WillistonCoyote. But as I have said a few times now, I am in favor of trading both of them to move up in the draft so we can hopefully get Turner and Favors and then sign David Lee.

Something to keep in mind about moving up, Greg Monroe has just said he is going back to George Town (because of the loss, so it’s entirely possible he was talking out of frustration and not thinking clearly) so there’s another player possibly not on the board for us when we draft (not necessarily him, but someone that would have been there if the people who took him would have taken Monroe instead).

If David Lee could play SF

I’d do Love + something to get David Lee + Danillo. Lee certainly has more athletic ability than any of our current bigs.

by PGNation on Mar 19, 2010 3:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Lee is a free agent this year

NY only signed him to a 1-year deal for $7M (I’m pretty sure). So it isn’t too unrealistic to assume that he would sign here for a comparable amount and more years for the small market consideration. The strategy would have to be to go after him the second FA starts so NY can’t match in a week without knowing what will happen with the big 3 FAs first.

No-brainer

Love and 17th (or whatever it is) Pick for Randolph and Top-5 Pick seems like a no-brainer, and one that Golden State would never do.

I don’t think Golden State will be trading their draft pick away in a deal like this… there is pretty good talent with high potential in the Top-3 of this draft. Maybe if they fall out of that into the 4-6 range, it’s a possibility. But then, it might not make sense to trade Love.

by Andy G on Mar 19, 2010 2:13 PM CDT reply actions

I'd like to see you propose a trade

that you think that Golden State would go for that would also be beneficial to us.

by PGNation on Mar 19, 2010 3:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Remember

We are dealing with GSoM when we make these propositions. Kahn is not. Advantage Kahn :)

How about....

Love and Flynn for Randolph and Ellis. I know some don’t like Monte but from what I’ve seen he is a solid defender and can create his own shot.

by TheGreat on Mar 19, 2010 5:26 PM CDT up reply actions

I could agree with this

Ellis has a bad contract but does have some skills. I would want the pick for taking on the bad contract.

by PGNation on Mar 19, 2010 10:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Ellis is slightly overpaid but so what

We have very little on the perimeter, Ellis would be a huge upgrade over Flynn, who is just painful to watch at this point.

He doesn't have to come up with a trade

To claim that the original trade wouldn’t be done by Golden State.

by pagingstanleyroberts on Mar 19, 2010 7:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed that he doesn't have to

but it certainly helps to make a proposal to see where his valuations stem from. It is much more productive to discuss in that context than just to say that the other team wouldn’t do it.

by PGNation on Mar 19, 2010 10:08 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not sure...

I just don’t think Golden State is looking to ditch their Top-5 Pick and Anthony Randolph, just to get Kevin Love and a mid-1st Rounder. It doesn’t seem likely.

Maybe a more-realistic trade scenario would be if Golden State lands the 1st or 2nd Pick. If the Wolves get #3 or #4, we will probably try to trade up. Maybe Golden State would swap picks if we throw Love into the deal — who knows.

I'd really like to give Love another season

I don’t see his value decreasing over another season, and he does have nice upside. I’d also like to see him play with a guy like Turner because I think the running team concept would thrive with Love’s outlet passes and a guy like Turner (or Wall of course). If the come back next season with Jefferson, and trade Love, I will really start to question what kind of team they are trying to build. Jefferson doesn’t add much to the running team, in transition and the half court.

I believe that they will be able to move Al Jefferson for a high pick. Some people think he has a bad contract, but with his offensive ability and the fact that so many teams are well below the cap, one of the FA losers will be looking for someone like Big Al. It’s that old saying, they only need one team to take the bait.

The lottery is also going to have an impact on who they keep, and until we know where the Wolves are picking too many ways to go.

by Rumblebee on Mar 19, 2010 2:33 PM CDT reply actions

I agree but.....

Al’s trade value isn’t too high right now due to injury, while Love should have pretty high value plus Rambis and Love are having issues, therefore it makes much more sense to move Love.

by TheGreat on Mar 19, 2010 6:17 PM CDT reply actions

If McHale was still coaching

I would stick with Jefferson. I just think Love is going to fit better in this system, or at least be tradable in a year. I get the injury concern with Jefferson, but I think most teams will assume he is back to 100% next season (pretty typical with ACL injuries today).

by Rumblebee on Mar 19, 2010 10:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Love looks legit

We draft a guy who looks legit every time Haley’s comet comes around. I’d hate to trade something that is a known quanity for a pick in a draft that is supposed to be short on sure things.

Everybody thinks this guy at the #3 pick is a beast, and that guy is a beast, but they say that every year and look at how many turn out to be stiffs. Love has talent and looks to be a hard worker. Keep him.

by Darth Tugits on Mar 19, 2010 6:32 PM CDT reply actions

Loves a bench guy

Is he a starting caliber PF or a super sub? Rambis thinks he is a sub. If so, it’s best to get a starting caliber player for him at a position of need.

by PGNation on Mar 19, 2010 11:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Relevant Question

But pretty impossible to propose deals when we don’t know whether the Golden State pick is in the Top 3, Top 5, or 6-10. I think Love’s value is somewhere below one of the Top 4 picks due to the combination of having a lower ceiling because he’s a one way player and a shorter contract length than Wall, Turner, Cousins or Favors would have post draft. After those 4 Love as a known commodity in my opinion makes him more valuable than the crapshoot that looks to be available after pick 4.

So looking at teams that need help at PF and have a defensive presence in the post, I would think New Jersey, Indiana, Milwaukee, Houston, maybe Sacramento, maybe Golden State would be the short list of teams with interest where we could sell Love as a good starter level fit. Not a lot of great talent to get back in return unless you like Courtney Lee, Jason Thompson, Spencer Hawes, Tyler Hansbrough or Anthony Randolph.

An Indiana possibility in my mind would be If Indiana gets the 2nd or 3rd pick, I would consider Love + Sessions for Indiana Pick + Jeff Foster. I only make this deal if based on the lottery results we’d net one of (Wall or Tuner) and one of (Favors or Cousins) between our pick and the Indiana pick. Indiana only makes this deal if they can’t get John Wall with their pick who would be an ideal fit. Including Flynn instead of Sessions or the Utah Pick or Pekovic would be possible IMO to sweeten the deal, but I doubt Kahn would give up so quickly on one of his “guys” which Flynn would be.

a guy who avgs a double double in under 30 mins

Is so rare to find these days that Love is the only player doing so in the NBA.

He’s only 21, in his 2nd season and we want to trade him already for picks?

The easier answer IMO is play him 35+ mins like Fri against the Lakers, he will give 18-20 pts night in night out, 12-15 boards, 2-4 assists. Assuming Love is traded, how sure are we that the top 5 picks are bounded to have all-star #’s like Love?

Love needs to improve his D and stamina no doubt about it, but he’s the future in Minnesota, trading away a double double machine would be devasting to this franchise.

by GWST11 on Mar 20, 2010 5:19 PM CDT reply actions

I'm a Love fan

but the point of the excercise is to gauge his value with other fans here. If we really like Love this much, we should be happy that McHale made the trade. At the time, a there was a lot of backlash since people were of the opinion that Mayo was a future star. So far, it looks like we got the better end of the deal.

by PGNation on Mar 20, 2010 7:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Love is Nice but......

Mayo is the better overall player, he is athletic, can shoot, defend play a little PG, and has no weaknesses, right now all we have out on the wings are backup players, With Mayo here we’d have more wins IMO. The only time this team was decent was when Foye was red hot, killing on the perimeter while Al was killing Down low, before the injury I thought we were going to be special, Mayo can do what Foye was doing last January, I like Love but Brewer and Company make it impossible not to wish we had Mayo.

by TheGreat on Mar 20, 2010 10:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Another thing

Rambis has been screwing with Love, he may not wanna play here later on down the line.
