Children by the millions...

…only know Alex Chilton from a Replacements song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQaUs5J2wdI&feature=related

And, if you can believe it, dude was 16, yup 16, when that was recorded. The man had a legit classic in 1967 and died this week at just 59. Unbelievable.

Nice

Too bad he could rarely harness…whatever, in a way he could be satisfied with. But I guess it was always his and pure, and I bet that is why his influence is so often cited.

He was scheduled for a Big Star show with the main 1975 line-up this week in Memphis. Too bad.

Thanks for the notice

I missed that he died somehow. Guy had a…varied career. Some of that Big Star stuff should be remembered more; it was pretty influential

If you are interested these two articles are illuminating

I think if Big Star was a brand new band and released their first album last week, singing the same songs in essentially the same way, they would be very successful.

One item of interest here

Love’s temperament. Back in L.A., and does he bounce or keep falling? Bust his butt or let his shoulders fall?

We were ready in July, we're the Wolves

Bring it on.
I’m just hoping Kobe and Pau have to play in the 4th.

They'd only be favored by 10..

…if Odom and Brown started for Pau and Kobe.

So can we treat this as a combo...

Game thread / NCAA Tournament prospect thread?

When we’re down 35 in the 3rd, I’m thinking discussing Turner, Favors, etc… is going to take precedence.

"I'm gonna make you cry...I'm gonna make you cry and dip my cookie in your tears!!!"

by mutleyil on Mar 19, 2010 9:39 PM CDT reply actions

Why not start now?

All of GTech looked like they didn’t really care about the win. It was weird. But Favors looked solid fundamentally. Nothing too great except for a nice dunk off a feed. Couple TOs cuz of a small hop when he starts his post moves. Nothing he couldn’t fix pretty easily.

Turner just got cut off on CBS, too bad. Diebler and Buford were dominating. Turner was more or less a nonfactor (as much as he is, still good passing and rebounding). He’ll take over if/when he needs to.

by Mplax on Mar 19, 2010 9:51 PM CDT up reply actions

GT

I noticed that too about GT, none of those guys looked real jazzed up. Favors comes in a great package, but I question his motor a little bit. He sort of exemplified what you were talking about in terms of GT’s breezy attitude.

by Rascal Flatts on Mar 19, 2010 9:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Favors looked solid physically...

Fundamentally, I’m not so sure. He is clearly going to be a good rebounder and help defender. But in man D, he got burned about every time by that OSU lefty. On O, blechhhh. Tech would have had the same success throwing the ball straight out of bounds than throwing to Favors in the low block. He turned it over a lot in both the high and low post.

Bottom line….DANGER with the 3rd pick in my mind. Unless Rubio is 100% coming. Favors absolutely HAS TO HAVE someone like Rubio setting him up for easy buckets.

I know, and I keep telling myself that, but...

Hoping someone gets better is getting old for me. I want someone ready to contribute next yea…not 2 or 3 years from now.

by mutleyil on Mar 19, 2010 10:01 PM CDT up reply actions

It's pretty much Evan Turner or bust in that regard

Everyone else except Wes Johnson is a work in progress, and Johnson needs to be set up for his buckets as much as anyone

by Oceanary on Mar 19, 2010 10:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Totally agree...

Johnson is really starting to scare me. The last few times I’ve seen him, he’s been nothing but a 1-dimensional spot-up shooter that doesn’t really try on D.

I remember him being far more active earlier in the year.

"I'm gonna make you cry...I'm gonna make you cry and dip my cookie in your tears!!!"

by mutleyil on Mar 19, 2010 10:06 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't think Johnson is even a factor for us

If we don’t get Wall or Turner, we’ll go with one of the bigs.

by Rascal Flatts on Mar 19, 2010 10:08 PM CDT up reply actions

So, if Wall, Turner, Cousins, and Favors are gone what do you do then, trade? Same thing we should’ve done with the 6th pick when Reke’ wasn’t available instead of reaching for Flynn. Why would Kahn do that though? I’m sure Aldrich will win him over with his personality.

by AnotherDraftPickBitesTheDust on Mar 20, 2010 12:55 PM CDT up reply actions

I just looked at Al Horford's stats today from college

because I like to think of Favors as a more athletic Horford. And Horford’s freshman year was less than impressive. He took a huge leap his soph year though. Favors blows away his freshman numbers.

by Mplax on Mar 19, 2010 10:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Good point

I guess I should have said he knows how to play. He doesn’t necessarily execute, but you can tell that he knows where he should be. On offense he does a good job of setting big screens and then rolling into the open space (not that he gets the passes). On defense he knows where to be in relation to his man, the hoop, and the ball (as you pointed out, not terrific in man defense… yet).

by Mplax on Mar 19, 2010 10:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Agree...

He’s not nearly as raw as he was early ths year, which speaks well to his projectability. Still makes me a tad nervous with how underwhelming he plays for his size and talent.

What did people think of James Anderson?

He clearly had a poor game, but I saw a lot of things I liked. Today was the fist time I’ve watched him. Great NBA body, excellent ability to absorb contact and get his shot off, very good handle, played good D.

Wouldn’t be a bad consolation prize with the Charlotte pick if we miss out on Turner.

"I'm gonna make you cry...I'm gonna make you cry and dip my cookie in your tears!!!"

by mutleyil on Mar 19, 2010 10:00 PM CDT reply actions

Was more so focusing on Favors

but I noticed he got a steal from Favors (which there was clearly a foul on from both of the defenders) and got rejected by Favors (a lot of body contact, but I think the refs got it right that Favors was merely holding his position).

Besides that he was really just a nonfactor from what I could tell. Definitely an athlete though and didn’t seem like a liability by any means.

by jordanmowbray on Mar 19, 2010 10:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Lakers announcers gold again

They wonder why they start doing worse when their bench comes in… umm, well sirs, it’s because your bench isn’t made up of in-their-prime allstars (or slightly past).

by Mplax on Mar 19, 2010 10:11 PM CDT reply actions

Not completely fair

They have a great bench, or should, but the bench has been sucking. It has been a big deal for the last couple years that Brown, Farmar, Lamar, Luke, Sasha come in and often increase the lead versus the other team’s bench. Recently, the bench has been getting killed. So, it isn’t bench versus starters he’s comparing. It’s bench performance versus other bench performance – which during the title run was incredible, but recently has sucked. So, it’s been a theme, why has the bench production – relatively – declined?

I wouldn't care too much

if he could make free throws! FREE!!!! Come on Corey, no excuse for that.

He earns more free throws than he takes though when he does that, so if he keeps it up, he should eventually get the calls (and maybe start making that crap).

by Mplax on Mar 19, 2010 10:13 PM CDT up reply actions

He needs to be doing regular free throw drills

My one big complaint about him is his free throw shooting

by Oceanary on Mar 19, 2010 10:15 PM CDT up reply actions

For those who remember when Trent Tucker was a Wolves analyst

He was on KFAN a few hours ago. He is a big supporter of the Wolves getting Turner in the draft, says he would be perfect in the Triangle, especially in the pinch post.
His comment about Wall is that his upside is Gary Payton, his downside is Jamal Crawford. He didn’t hide his fear of Wall fitting into this system. Says Wall would be great in Golden State playing for Don Nelson, just doesn’t think he will fit with the Wolves.

by Rumblebee on Mar 19, 2010 10:13 PM CDT reply actions

Fit needs to be thrown out the window with a guy like Wall

This is where Rambis needs to go pound sand. It’s time to change the offense if we get Wall.

Or Rubio...

by mutleyil on Mar 19, 2010 10:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Rubio should fit

He’s not ball dominant like Wall or Flynn

by Oceanary on Mar 19, 2010 10:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes, but...

You are definitley not playing to his strengths. Drifting to the corners and shooting 3’s would be a waste of his talent.

"I'm gonna make you cry...I'm gonna make you cry and dip my cookie in your tears!!!"

by mutleyil on Mar 19, 2010 10:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Not necessarily

That’s arguably his best shot. Rubio in the triangle is about the same as Kidd in the Princeton offense….I mean, he’s got pretty much free reign of the floor in Dallas, so I don’t think it inhibits him. Rubio’s not like Chris Paul were he breaks down a defense getting into the lanes.

by Oceanary on Mar 19, 2010 10:23 PM CDT up reply actions

From everything I've seen...

His strength is drive n kick. Definitely not the undersized SG required by the triangle.

"I'm gonna make you cry...I'm gonna make you cry and dip my cookie in your tears!!!"

by mutleyil on Mar 19, 2010 10:26 PM CDT up reply actions

The thing people seem to forget

is that when Rubio gets here at least 25% of the Wolves offense is going to be fast break, which is perfect for Rubio.

by Rumblebee on Mar 19, 2010 10:38 PM CDT up reply actions

But that doesn't mean...

We should put him in a bad system the remaining 75% of the time.

"I'm gonna make you cry...I'm gonna make you cry and dip my cookie in your tears!!!"

by mutleyil on Mar 19, 2010 10:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes and No

Is it perfect for him, maybe not…but overall he’d be fine. They dominate on the fast break, led by Rubio, then the half court gets set up by Rubio but run by guys like Turner, Brewer, and Love. Nothing wrong with that.

by Rumblebee on Mar 19, 2010 10:46 PM CDT up reply actions

I guess the only thing I see missing...

Is Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant.

But I guess that’s just a nit.

If Ricky is your superstar...

You run SSOL, and never look back. Imagine of Nash had been in that system sincw he was 20. He would have crushed the assist record 5 years ago.

by mutleyil on Mar 19, 2010 10:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Rubio will never be the shooter Nash is

And he’s not as fast either. Not as fast as Kidd for that matter.

Besides, all offense-no defense is not a good system to build a championship team with.

by Oceanary on Mar 19, 2010 10:26 PM CDT up reply actions

I was only referring to the Offense...

I would love to see a Suns like offense with the old Seattle Sonics “Amoeba” defense. And I think we could do it with that personnel.

Agree about the shooting, but not about the speed. Nash is really slow, and I watch the guy all the time. He is so crafty, you just don’t realize it.

Ricky will be a better defender than Nash, as he is longer and will make way more plays off the ball.

Right for the wrong reasons

It was not a travel, but it looked like one. He didn’t pump fake. As the pass lofted in he caught it a lot closer to his body than it seemed, and while doing so re-set both feet. It looked like he caught it, then re-set both feet then took off. In reality (frame by frame hi-def) his right foot was in the air when he actually caught the ball and the ball was out of his hand for the dribble well before his right foot moved again. But, live, it looked like he caught it, took a mini-jump to re-set both feet, then lifted the left before the dribble. I understand the call, but Jonny was right, not traveling.

It was a clean pick

Watched it frame-by-frame in hi-def. He definitely tapped the ball away well before any contact. Wayne was lazy with the crossover, his right hand was way too high to receive it and Kobe was all over it. Watching the Lakers feed, so unless there was some other angle there is no possible way to assert a clear foul – or any foul. The only likely contact was after the ball was behingd Wayne and he threw up his hands – and even then his arms got up unobstructed. Sorry. Kobe gets calls and rookies don’t – but this does not fall into that mold. Lazy rookie dribble, veteran with great hands.

Leaving alone Rambis patiently waiting out

Corey shooting 6-17 for like the entire first third of the season.

Wow, Corey only took 17 shots the first 30 games of the season?

As long as we’re being smart ass too-literals

Not to say anything about us not having a better option anyway. I sure we’d all have been thrilled to see Pavlovic play 30 minutes a night instead, yes?

by Oceanary on Mar 20, 2010 6:53 PM CDT up reply actions

You really are tied in knots over this player.

All of us, every one, knows the Wolves are incredibly thin at the wing. I’ve been harping on it since the preseason, or since the Washington trade really.

That didn’t mean the only possible solution was to give Corey Brewer the green light on every possible shot while, simultaneously, having quite different standards for other players. Ellington, for example: Rookie or no, if Ellington had shot away like Corey with the same results, he’d be buried so deep on the bench by now we’d have written off the pick.

To back off and frame this with you: My basic take on Corey right now, and for a while now, is that he’s very much like a baseball player with limited “plate discipline.” There are certain traits you’ll have a heck of a time changing in a player, and that’s one of them. He’s aggressive as all get out, and sometimes it looks good, but people lined up against him take advantage of his low-percentage cuts at pitches in the dirt. New top end for Corey: Dan Gladden.

You said several negative things about him EARLIER IN THE DAY YESTERDAY.

Weird, the date stamps say March 19th.

Seriously, dude or dude-ess, the goggles are getting the way of your vision at this point.

Hey, Oceanary, take a guess what Love and Corey are shooting in the last ten games. I’ll give you a hint: they’re within .007 of each other.

Was kind of funny

Put the game on an hour ago after the kids went to bed. My wife humors me watching the Wolves these days and doesn’t really pay attention. She watched a play and said “Is he getting Fat”…I knew who she was talking about, but asked her who she was talking about to be sure. She said Kevin Love. This has been written about a little lately and a lot of fans don’t want to admit it, but when my wife who pays attention to five minutes per game (when they are on TV) notices that Love is out of shape, HE IS OUT OF SHAPE.

Darko, Love, Brewer, Ellington, Flynn and Sessions (assuming we don’t draft Wall). Everyone else can go. Trade Jefferson and Hollins (good luck) and don’t re-sign Pavs, Pech, Wilkins, or Jawai (although maybe keep him as a big body depending on draft).

by TWolvesFanInLA on Mar 19, 2010 11:34 PM CDT up reply actions

i actually dont mind Damien Wilkins...

by Oceanary on Mar 19, 2010 11:44 PM CDT up reply actions

So…if he averaged 30 mpg as the 6th man, would he be worth it? Many talk about how it doesn’t matter who starts, shouldn’t the same be said for $$$

by Blond Ricky on Mar 19, 2010 11:46 PM CDT up reply actions

theres always the option of trading him..

But if we somehow DONT trade him…, who would u rather have start: Milicic and Love or Milicic and Jefferson? Love is definitly the better all-around player. Im just saying it would probably better suit us if Jefferson came off the bench.. he could always end up playing 30min depending on how Milicic/Love/Hollins (just kidding about Hollins… we have to get rid of him) do.

by jordanmowbray on Mar 19, 2010 11:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah...

Those guys that will lead the league in rebounding are a real pain in the ass. Not to mention that they can shoot from the high post, make great passes, and actually hedge on a PnR.

But by all means, over-obsess on how he gets blocked down low.

"I'm gonna make you cry...I'm gonna make you cry and dip my cookie in your tears!!!"

by mutleyil on Mar 19, 2010 11:52 PM CDT up reply actions

More concerned about who he's guarding

As someone said in the last game thread, no matter who you play him with, he has to guard someone

It’s not like coming off the bench makes him less of a player. It might just mean it’s better for the team, and I think it is. He’s an ideal bench player to me…he’s highly productive, and a sixth man role will limit his weaknesses

by Oceanary on Mar 20, 2010 12:00 AM CDT up reply actions

Kevin Love's D...

Is above average on this craptastic defensive team. He is brutally undersized at the PF position in the NBA, but at least he stays in front of his guy.

It would be much better if he was Derrick Favors, who bit on EVERY pump fake tonight and got burned for 100% FG% against his guy.

"I'm gonna make you cry...I'm gonna make you cry and dip my cookie in your tears!!!"

by mutleyil on Mar 20, 2010 12:04 AM CDT up reply actions

Above average for our team...

….is still way below average for the NBA as a whole. And way way way below average when talking about contenders. If you were to compare Love’s defense to the defense of the league’s 29 other starting power forwards, I’d bet he’d place in the bottom 10, if not the bottom 5.

And while I get you don’t like Favors much, remember that you can teach skill, but can’t teach size. He has physical tools neither Al or Love have, which makes his upside on both ends of the floor miles higher.

by Oceanary on Mar 20, 2010 12:12 AM CDT up reply actions

You sure you want to make that argument?

I believe in stats, except when they don’t back up my opinions: A la Derrick Favors

I believe in criticizing guys for effort:
As long as it’s Kevin Love and NOT Jonny Flynn.

I believe in tools, but only if it involves a screwdriver…

by mutleyil on Mar 20, 2010 1:36 AM CDT up reply actions

Actually I don't believe in advanced stats much

You should know that. Whether it’s PER or WP48 or whatever, I’ve always criticized anything beyond simple rates.

But is it really that big of a deal that we don’t think Love is a starter on a championship team? I mean, that’s all I said, just my opinion that he’s a sixth man on a contender. I didn’t say he’s worthless or anything.

bwahahaha how you jump down that guy's throat for saying that he doesn't think Love is a starting PF on a championship team...

which he isn’t unless he is surrounded by a massive amount of talent. He would be the weak link of the 5 starters that is for sure.

Even if he were (he’s not), it’s awesome how you just immediately attack anyone that says anything you deem to be negative about Love.

by mutleyil on Mar 20, 2010 1:50 AM CDT up reply actions

yea seriously man..

Kevin Love is a pretty darn solid player and just a good team player. It looks like your underrating him a bit man, he might not be as amazing as mutleyil makes him seem but he should be that good/close to being that good within a few years.

He’s certainly better then Al Jefferson, which is saying quite a bit seeing as im sure MANY teams would love to have him.

Also, im not sure if he would be regarded as the “weak link” on a championship team… he does quite a lot that doesnt show on the stats and is a top-tier rebounder (which is pretty darn important in the NBA). But I do agree that he would at least need a couple 20pt scorers, a good faciliating point guard and a REALLY solid defensive center beside him to make a championship run.

Thats just my 2 cents.

by jordanmowbray on Mar 20, 2010 2:02 AM CDT up reply actions

depends what's around him,...

Hes ONE HELL of a rebounder man, if u could have some good scorers around him and a good facilitating point guard I think its certainly possible.

I'd love to see it...

Bring Al off the bench in the Chris Gatling kind of role. He could abuse most other teams 2nd line bigs. He’d never accept it though.

Even more fun would be to see Rambis call out his poor defense as the reason. “Al can score, but his defense doesn’t justify a starting position.”

by Blond Ricky on Mar 19, 2010 11:45 PM CDT up reply actions

by Oceanary on Mar 19, 2010 11:46 PM CDT up reply actions

i see your point

but i don’t give a rats a$$ what he “accepts”. He’s making $12 mil a year. If the best thing for the team is him coming off the bench, then so be it. Conversely, he could learn to play f&^%ing D and then we wouldn’t be having this conversation. His choice.

Ok Jonny

Get Corey a look for 3. Two more chances at least. Be a leader, realize what the team needs.

Yup

Fish only played 16 minutes, but Jonny did have 5 TOs. He played well and shot well – I am a Jonny supporter (after being doubtful after the draft) but his game was helped a lot by having Fish. And Farmar isn’t exactly a defensive force. But, happy for Jonny, I still believe he can be a legit #6 pick.

Hollins getting 73 seconds despite playing them like the typical 20+ minutes he gets.

Good game/discussion guys.

Just a few thoughts:
I dont think any of us would’ve bet that we’d actually be competitive with the Los Angeles Lakers. Hopefully Darko is OK. Jonny looked more like a real point guard today (thank god). Nobody really stood out except for Darko and Love… just a solid game by all players.. thats a huge improvement.. and hopefully can carry this over to next game.

Night.

Good job Wolves...

You actually turned this into a game thread, instead of a “Let’s Talk About the Draft” thread. Now, if you could just bring that same effort to the rest of the season, we’d appreciate it.

Hopefully...

…the histrionics over the past week will calm down.
Love isn’t a whiny fat loser.
Flynn is not destined to be worse than Maynor, Collison, and Teague.
Rambis isn’t a complete idiot.
Al cares enough to still get pissed and still has skills.
We can play a little D at times, but we just lack talent and size.

We are not good, but we are not nearly as bad as the previous few games.

We were just destined to be bad from the very beginning

Not sure why everyone panics when we actually play it. If you know a team is going to be bad, it shouldn’t be a big deal when they lose…

by Oceanary on Mar 20, 2010 12:18 AM CDT up reply actions

I’m not disappointed when we lose, I’m disappointed when we play sloppy and lazy. I panic when I look at the lack of talent and even potential on this team. I don’t think we have one player who will ever be a top 3 player on title contending team (with exception of potentially Rubio).

by TWolvesFanInLA on Mar 20, 2010 12:33 AM CDT up reply actions

Sloppy, lazy play, yes

Lack of talent? Not sure about that one. It seemed pretty obvious, to me at least, that we lacked any sizable talent from the very start. That’s why Kahn keeps preaching patience….he knows the real potential for this team is in the draft picks and cap space that has yet to be used.

I think we, as fans, might have just set our own expectations too high, thinking some of our players would be better than they are. I know I’m guilty of it with Flynn. I’m sure a lot of people were hoping for more from Love. Really, the only player we have that has just outright exceeded expectations is Brewer, which is fantastic for him, but really…what more needs to be said in light of that?

by Oceanary on Mar 20, 2010 12:42 AM CDT up reply actions

To clarify

I’m not suggesting that I thought this team was talented at the beginning of the season. The losses don’t concern me..the lack of upside on this team does. I’d certainly be more optimistic at 14-56 if we had a core like last year’s fellow bottom dwellers OKC and Memphis.

by TWolvesFanInLA on Mar 20, 2010 12:57 AM CDT up reply actions

I definitely agree with you there

Hopefully this year’s draft will change that. I’d love to walk out with either Turner or Wall, a big man with star potential, and at least one more guy that can be a major contributor in a couple of years.

Even if we don’t pick up any free agents over the summer, having three players like that will really get some optimism and solid potential on the team.

by Oceanary on Mar 20, 2010 1:00 AM CDT up reply actions

And while I think we have more talent than Nets, at least they’re can confidently say they’ve got one position locked down with an All Star for the next decade with Lopez.

This team functions much better with Darko on the court

Period. The same might be true of another legit-sized C. But Darko has skills on both ends of the court.

What are the odds that the Wolves surprisingly end up offering a chunk of their FA money on Darko?

What are the odds he accepts?

Heeeey....

Not a terrible god awful game that makes me want to pluck my eyeballs out… I watched a good portion of this one… and was happy to see some effort, and a reasonably competitive game.

We had a stretch with a couple minutes left in the third where we were pretty sloppy (that’s you Mr. Wilkins) but all in all this is the type of loss I can deal with. Good effort from the Wolves tonight.

by FunnyBrew.com on Mar 20, 2010 3:01 AM CDT reply actions

It's the wings again, though.

In the box score, this makes yet another loss in which the Wolves get nothing like legitimate contributions from their wings on offense.

Gomes, Brewer, Wilkins, and Ellington were 9-28 from the floor. Wayne’s 4-9 saved that from a hideous .263 shooting percentage for the game. The positions with “scoring” and “shooting” in front of them, those we don’t fare so well at.

When we’re talking about things we knew before the year started, the fact that we had nothing like starting NBA wing talent is first on my list. Look at the Wolves’ wins, and what you’re going to see is some games where we got Gomes to go off against Denver, and that sort of thing.

by feral on Mar 20, 2010 9:21 AM CDT reply actions

We knew the wings would be bad, very true

but what we didn’t realize is how poor the PG play would be. Seriously, is Flynn/Sessions really any better than Telfair/Foye? I certainly thought they would be, but it just hasn’t worked out that way. Sessions especially has been a disappointment when you look what he did in Milwaukee the season before – and it’s not like they were loaded with talent either. He put up superior numbers on a similarly talent-depleted team. Is it the Tricycle Offense (I love that!) that has set him back?

by Rascal Flatts on Mar 20, 2010 12:33 PM CDT up reply actions

It's the Trike.

If Sessions didn’t also seem to be having his assist numbers depressed, and if every pointever under Phil Jackson didn’t also seem that way, we’d have less of a heap of circumstantial evidence, wouldn’t we?

“Assists get spread thin across the roster” is pretty hard to argue with.

Handles - Back-Court

Tricycles need handles, and the back-court players were terrible at controlling
the ball tonight. Usually, we bring in Sessions to settle things down because
Jonny gets a little wild. Tonight was an exception. Sessions was horrible. Every
guard on our team seems to have ball control problems, and the Lakers exploited
all of their weaknesses. Flynn was best tonight, but he still had several breakdowns.
When Ellington brought the ball up, the Lakers attacked, pressured, trapped and stripped him.

My chant to trade Love was very muted tonight. His effort brought out his offensive
skills and he looked very good tonight, making several good decisions. He has
an excellent basketball sense. Is that because he’s playing to the home crowd?
I hope he puts personal grievances behind him; it distracts him from the business
at hand.

Jefferson is Jefferson. Excellent scorer down low, but limited to that. A double-down
on him can take him out of the game. He gets just as pissed as Love when he
doesn’t get minutes. Does one of them have to go? That’s a hard decision
because what you get can be worse than what you have, and we haven’t many
bargaining chips. It would be nice to shed salary. If Jeff goes, Love has to step
up and get a man attitude and bring it every night. Neither is a great defender,
but Love does face up, at least, and doesn’t get juked much. He keeps
his feet. My main rap on him is pouting, and emphasizing it by withholding
‘game’. He needs to shed the crocodile tears, and reconcile with his coach &
mates, and bring a new outlook.

Darko: Damaged goods. Still has upside. If Rambis can get Darko believing,
we can get a lot of good play from this guy. Right now he’s playing like he
has an inferiority complex. When he takes it to the hoop, he’s too timid. He’s
had plenty of opportunity to make statements at the rack, but he’s going
to the rim soft. I’d like to see him go at the hoop more aggressively. Some
of that soft stuff has rolled off the rim, where a jam could have made sure.

Ellington: Not a great ball handler, as we witnessed tonight. If he continues
his great shooting, though, he has the ability to play well off the ball, find
a space and pop. That’s the way he has to be used. He’s not tall in that
position, but he’s very good at getting away from his man and find open looks.

The rest of the team? a grab bag. They each have a good night now and then,
but a good team needs to field guys that have it almost every night. The highest
on this list would have to be Brewer.

Bottom line: Taking care of the ball is the biggest weakness on this team.
Recommendation for the Summer? Ball handling drills for every guy on this
on the squad, from Guards to Centers. In the modern game, every player needs to be
able to handle and protect the ball as well as a guard. In a game, keep the
ball in the hands of real ball-handlers. Most of our turnovers are caused by
guys who shouldn’t have the ball in situations. If they do get in a situation,
they should be able to get themselves out of trouble. Our guys who aren’t
comfortable, who get trapped, always panic. Easy TO for the enemy.

I forgot defense

I’ll just list my biggest gripe.

The guys out on top don’t meet the invaders to cut them off, make them change
direction, or pass off. They let the opposers get in too deep and split the defense for
easy straight to the hoop shots. Drivers have to be cut off. If they get by you, at least turn
them toward help. Most of the time, the guys coming into our territory are
unmolested out high. This has to be addressed emphatically.

“invaders”, “opposers”, “unmolested”….Good stuff. I’d like you to throw in an “evildoers” next time if you could.

Rambis?

Difficult to comment.

The biggest rap seems to be the match-ups he sends to the floor. I think
there’s a whole lot of experimentation going on here, so I reserve judgment.

A coach needs to know what guys can handle and what they can’t handle,
especially in real-game situations; they have to know who can step up and who
can’t step up. Who has upside to be developed and who has reached his upper
limit. Who stays, who goes. Who is compatible with whom, and who isn’t.
That’s why he has to give quality minutes to slugs. Are they redeemable?

Stay with the system, junk the system? Fit the players to it, or fit it to the players?
Find players who fit the system & send others packing, or work with what you have?

The players have an easier job than Rambis. A coach wears more hats than
is usually perceived.

This a development team. We have little talent. You can’t just play our best
players. We only have two.
