I thought last night's game against Sacto provided us with some answers pertaining to the future.
1. Al Jeff vs. Love - Can we please stop saying Kevin Love is a better player than Al? Please? When others around him are playing well and he doesn't have to be the main cog, he is such a good player. He scored efficiently, passed out of double teams, rebounded, blocked several shots playing at the PF position next to Darko. On 3 key possessions the wolves went to him down the stretch. He shot twice, went 1 for 2, and assisted another player on a 3 pointer. I don't think Love would have been as successful if we'd have went to him in crunch time. I believe we are seeing that Al is a dynamite player next to a legit center (I'm still not sold on Darko as a legit starting center but he played like it last night). As this team gathers more talent in the future, Al will play better and better. I say if Love has a high trade value that HE should be the one we include in our summer transactions, not Al.
2. Jonny. Every once in awhile Jonny gives you a game like this. It was a complete game. Passing, scoring, good leadership, decent defense. If he could play like that consistently then he WOULD be a quality starting PG in this league. We've seen him play like one, so maybe with some off season work he can grow and bring more consistency in all areas and play that way every game. Kid is fun to watch when he goes to the rim and dishes.
3. Darko. He is starting to get into better shape and is playing with more confidence. He hasn't won me over yet as our future starting center, but he's putting in a good effort. What a difference on defense when he's in there with Al instead of Love. The man is huge and knows how to position and play good D. I feel like we're not constantly scrambling defensively when he's out there because we don't need to double team as much as compared to when Love is out there. Even if Darko keeps improving, I'd still like to see us draft a long athletic big to put in the rotation.
I tell you what, if the Kings didn't have Evans, they'd be right there with the Nets. They have a lot of deficiencies. That of course is part of why we looked pretty good. I can really envision a huge jump in wins next year if we get a legitimate scoring wing somehow.
