Long story short

Ricky appears to be a young guy who likes hanging out in good weather with his buddies.

The whole Ricky thing seems like a giant axe hanging over the Wolves franchise. The axe is held up by a frayed rope. No one knows where or when it will drop. When it does, it may sever the Wolves chains to their woeful past, or it may land on their neck.

Denouement already!

I know – be patient. Just a few more years in the lottery, and we’ll have something here.

What's the "land on their neck" version?

That he would stay home? It seems to me like his rights are only going to gain in value as his contract option nears.

Kahn got Rubio’s rights for what amounts to a rental of one year’s worth of Randy Foye and Miller, neither of whom would have been great options to re-sign here anyway. But if we really wanted to? They’re on the market now.

Speaking of suspended weapons, Rubio might be the sword of Damocles for Kahn himself. If he decided not to come, that could mean David Kahn is out the door, if he didn’t get anything out of the rights under the circumstances…. I’m not sure the team really lost that much to get him, though.

That he stays in Spain indefinitely/permanently or forces a trade

I don’t fault Kahn for drafting Rubio. But I think two guys used the Wolves last summer. Penn used the Wolves job offer as leverage to get more $$ from Allen. And Rubio used the draft and subsequent Wolves pursuit as leverage to get more $$ on a better Spanish team.

Rubio sounds quite content to stay in the warm weather of Spain, close to home, close to buddies, close to adoring young women. He is a rock star there and will likely be more of a borderline All-Star here due to the US preoccupation with PPG.

I was so excited when he dropped to the Wolves, and am still somewhat excited. But it seems unclear whether he’ll be another Rudy Fernandez (comes over eventually), Tiago Splitter (NBA club can’t offer enough $$ to get him), or Fran Vazquez (does not want to come).

I also think we shouldn’t discount the value we expect from the #5 pick just because WAS was stupid.

PS: I agree on sword of Damocles part

I think if Rubio never plays for the Wolves and they don’t get an obvious major asset in trade, it will make Kahn look very bad. Not sure if it will mean a firing because this summer is probably bigger for his survival. But that draft could make him look very savvy or very stupid depending on Rubio’s future.

Why did you have to bring French into this? This was a perfectly good post about Babelfish translating (very poorly) Spanish to English. Comment dit-on. . .le français, c’est la langue de la culture haute. Il faut l’utiliser avec soin.

I saw an interesting Rubio/Wolves/NBA nugget the other day

and was waiting for a Rubio post to throw this out there. This is probably nothing, but it is one of those coincidences that make people wonder.
Apparently, the Wolves are going to Europe, specifically Barcelona in the fall. David Stern was asked if there was a reason for this coincidental scheduling, and Stern joked about the Wolves taking Rubio back to the US when they are done. I know it was probably all in fun, and a coincidental, except David Stern rarely does (or says) things without a purpose. Many posters speculated last summer that the Wolves could do some exhibition games with DKV to get them to lower the buyout, which obviously didn’t happen. I just wonder if something is happening now? I’m sure I am reading too much into this, especially since it would make my prediction from a few months ago come true, and give me the last laugh.

Rubio will be a Wolf next season
unless Wolves get Wall. Count on it.

I know, I know, Rubio’s buyout is next summer, right? Of course all things are negotiable. Could it be that the NBA is offering up a few exhibition games as an incentive to get Barca to be reasonable on a buyout this summer??

Rubio & Barca vs. Wolves would have been a nightmare
  • Barca probably wins, since the Wolves will likely be even younger with a bunch of guys who learned the triangle 3 days ago
  • Rubio is pitted against the team he is supposed to be ‘rooting’ for. What if he starts talking trash and strutting during the game. How does that make the Wolves look. Like a spurned girlfriend IMO.

Stern Quote
“It’s an interesting twist, isn’t it?’’ Stern said of the Timberwolves-Rubio connection. "I can’t take credit or blame for it, but it’s interesting that the team that holds the draft rights to a very good player for Barcelona is there. Maybe Ricky will be inspired to follow the team back. But that really wasn’t the reason at all. It’s just sort of an added plot twist that makes it interesting.’’

Will Rubio come over in 2011?

Without knowing how the CBA plays out will it be worth it financially for Rubio to come over next summer and make rookie scale or wait until the summer of 2012 and get paid like a FA, similar to what Splitter is doing? This obviously also depends on how much his game progresses and how much he improves. I hate to say it but if Rubio’s game progresses to levels people think it will, would it make a lot more financial sense for him to wait until the summer of 2012 to get paid $8-10 million per season rather than the $3-4 million per he’ll get under his rookie contract?

This topic hasn’t been brought up in a long time and I don’t mean to be the devil’s advocate but I think this is much more likely to happen then people realize. What’s more likely to happen Rubio plays for the Wolves in 2011, Rubio demands a trade and plays for someone else in 2011, or he waits another year to get paid more and waits a year to come over to the NBA? There’s also no guarantee he doesn’t demand a trade in 2012 if he comes over then.

by jama on Apr 19, 2010 4:22 PM CDT reply actions

There's a reasonable chance

that the rule exempting players from the rookie scale after 3 years gets eliminated in the next CBA, AND that rookie scale contracts go down, meaning that if he waits, he could be looking at the worst of all worlds, forcing him to either forgo money or forgo the NBA entirely.

I’m sure his agent is well aware of these possibilities. Not saying what you suggest won’t happen, but there is a flip side.

This may be why he tries to get over here next season

He controls his destiny vs wondering what happens in a year or two.

by Rumblebee on Apr 19, 2010 4:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Coming over next year

From all I’ve heard and read his contract does not have an out clause after this season. How would he be able to get out of his contract to come over next year?

EIM- I’m curious what you think is the most likely end scenario though? If you had to put a percentage on him playing for the Wolves in 2011 what would that be? I’m about 50-50 on him playing for the Wolves in 2011.

by jama on Apr 19, 2010 4:36 PM CDT up reply actions

I believe he could still get out of his deal, but it would require negotiating a suitable fee with Barca. Whether or not they would even be open to said negotiations is beyond me.

When I get sad, I stop being sad and be awesome instead. True story.

by Xand1 on Apr 19, 2010 4:47 PM CDT up reply actions

50-50 is as good as any

I admit I’ve lost my feel for where this may go. I just don’t have a handle on it anymore. Kahn has been so insistent that he’s coming, that you want to believe that, since to essentially promise and then have it backfire would be bad for him and the team.

On the other hand, you make some key points, and despite everyone trying to put a happy face on it, it seemed to clear to me at the draft and it’s aftermath that he was NOT happy with the Wolves, and I can’t see why that would have changed any after another disaster season.

As for his contract, my understanding is that there is no buyout for this summer. However, like anything else in this world, everything is negotiable. It would require Rubio deciding he really wants to come over now, and then Barca would probably insist on getting almost every cent they paid to Joventut back in the buyout. Why else would they even consider it, when they can just keep him another year?

So I think the chances of that are about, oh, 1 in a 1000 maybe?

We Are the Washington Generals

by Eric in Madison on Apr 19, 2010 4:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Why else would Barca agree to a reasonable buyout??

Hello Barca management, this is David Stern on the phone, you know we plan to expand to Europe in the next decade or so….Do you have any interest in owning that team, because we are evaluating potential partners at this time?

by Rumblebee on Apr 19, 2010 4:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah because David Stern has helped out the Wolves so much in the past. If I was the Spurs I would complain about something like that until my voice went hoarse. As the NBA commissioner you can’t blatantly help one franchise like that. He didn’t help the Spurs bring Splitter over or the Magic with Vazquez. I don’t see something like this happening. The Wolves could agree seperately to go over there to play in some exhibition games though.

by jama on Apr 19, 2010 5:03 PM CDT up reply actions

For Stern, it wouldn't only be about

helping the Wolves. Stern loves star power, and Rubio would bring more star power to the NBA this summer than any US player, including John Wall.

by Rumblebee on Apr 19, 2010 5:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Hi, this is David Stern

I know I announced that the league lost $400 million this year, and the losses are probably going to keep coming.

I really doubt he’s going to start talking expansion to Europe right now just to loosen up Ricky Rubio.

That’s a little far fetched.

We Are the Washington Generals

by Eric in Madison on Apr 19, 2010 5:16 PM CDT up reply actions

I suppose, far be it for the commissioner of the NBA

to do something that might improve attendance for one of his most struggling teams.

by Rumblebee on Apr 19, 2010 5:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Not sure about that $400 million figure either

it may be right, but let’s keep in mind, this was based on pre-season revenue figures. Considering the cap is going to stay almost the same instead of falling a few million, it’s possible the losses are closer to $300 million. Of that amount, the union has already disagreed about the “severity” of those losses, depreciation is a tax loss, not a money loss. They also argue that interest on loans to purchase the teams should not be counted as a loss.

by Rumblebee on Apr 19, 2010 5:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, I question that figure too

but it’s Stern’s position, reiterated the other day at the salary cap announcement where he put losses at $380-400 million.

Anyway, as much as he might like Rubio here, and might make a phone call, he can’t really offer anything tangible from the league to make it happen.

We Are the Washington Generals

by Eric in Madison on Apr 19, 2010 6:04 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree Stern isn't going to go to crazy

but there may be some subtle pressure and promises of future exhibition performances, etc.

Would I make a bet right now that Rubio is in the NBA this fall, eh, not without some decent odds on my side, but it is a bad time to talk Wolves right now and this is at least an exciting subject. I also think Kahn was probably prepared last fall to live with Rubio in Spain for two years, I think after this season Kahn and Taylor know they at least have to try again. The fact that Stern would like to have Rubio in some pre-season advertising just adds a little fuel.

by Rumblebee on Apr 19, 2010 6:24 PM CDT up reply actions

He's not going to do it to loosen up Rubio...

He would do it to seal his legacy, and retire on a strong note, as the legendary guy that built an international pro sports league.

He might even help the Wolves if it meant the greater glorification of David Stern.

Also, it is not about making or losing money on a yearly basis. It is about shielding income from taxes while growing capital gains on the value of a franchise.

Why is a franchise valuable? Because it is an advertising vehicle, it owns content that can be licensed. And as the world grows increasingly global, franchises become international brands. Basketball is the most international sport, in terms of players at top level (except for soccer).

And basketball is the top international sport that is also a major pro sport in the USA. Players from China, France, Spain, Germany, Brazil, Russia compete at the highest level in the USA and are major brands in their home countries. That is worth a lot.

I think Stern has that in mind, and he wants to be the guy that brings the NBA to the rest of the world. Fortunately, Ricky is the vehicle he can use to do that, and we own his rights. We may never see him play at Target Center, but if we don’t, we will definitely be able to use the rights to Ricky to our advantage, trading with a major team.

The natural spots for Ricky, IMHO, are the Nets (assuming the Russkie gets control), Miami, or LA. And all have the loot to make it rewarding to the Wolves to trade his rights.

But hey, I’ve been wrong before…

by timmuggs on Apr 19, 2010 11:12 PM CDT up reply actions

We definitely need to be rooting for Barca

I can imagine a few scenarios I suppose where Ricky would join the Wolves this summer, and all of them would require Barca winning the Euro league final four. I would think if he wins this and achieves a title in Europe, even as a part of a star studded team, it will cross off another accomplishment he can get in Europe and make coming to the NBA that much more attractive. If they lose in the title game, I could see both Barca and his teammates recruiting him hard to return as opposed to a buyout in order to give them all one more chance to win a title next season.

A Rubio blurb in the OKC paper yesterday gave me a new phrase

The article: Rubio draws praise from NBA stars

Orlando center Marcin Gortat: "Huge future, big, big future. He needs to get a little bit stronger and has to improve his shot, especially from the NBA three-point line, but I still believe he’s incredible. I think it’s a huge, huge move for Minnesota. I believe, yes, he will be a star. … He needs time. Give him one, two, maybe three years in Europe, they will have profit out of this guy. You can’t imagine how smart he is. A point guard with that kind of IQ, I mean, it’s like a diamond in the water. He sees the game further ahead than anyone could imagine. His skill to steal the ball is just ridiculous. He has very big talent."

“Like a diamond in the water.” Yeah.
