A Game of Big Numbers

Good article. Completely agree.

I’d like to root for KG because of his passion for the game. I don’t even mind some of the trash talking. But he just takes it to another level and is a downright a-hole. Now, there are few players I root against more vigorously than KG.

Even if it's true, I don't have a huge problem with it.

If he was a Wolf and this was negatively affecting the team, I’d be more concerned. His demeanor is low on the list of the NBA’s problems.

by pagingstanleyroberts on Apr 19, 2010 7:08 PM CDT reply actions

Still love him...

but he’s becoming something of a caricature of himself at this point.

by LoveTo on Apr 19, 2010 7:10 PM CDT reply actions

read it just before I got here

and yeah, what Kelly Dwyer said.

I think Ray, Paul and KG bring out the worst in each other. I thought I was going to become a huge Boston fan but the more games I watched, the more I found myself rooting for their opponents.

That Kendrick Perkins and Rondo are innately detestable doesn’t help either. Really, there’s a lot to dislike with those guys.

When I get sad, I stop being sad and be awesome instead. True story.

Where are the fun police when you need them?

What I mostly think of when these things get said is those couple of playoff series against the Spurs. The matchup was Garnett and Duncan, and Wolves fan or no I definitely recognized the difference at the time. People talk about Duncan whining to the refs or whatever, but I’ve never seen that so much…. Rooting for the guy whose trash talk got ignored by Duncan in those series was unsettling. Garnett talked, Duncan won.

The freshness of the young KG could make up for that stuff. But now he’s lost that step and that lift, and the fire’s just as hot. It’s less pleasant to watch, partly for that reason and partly ‘cause we’ve all moved on.

KG a thug?

He will likely always be the best player in Wolves history and certainly one of my all time favorites. I treasure the many times I was able to watch him in person, but he IS different now. Age, injuries, that depressing sense of entitlement, all make his trash talking and thuggery more tiresome. He seems desperate and grasping at straws to try to keep the Celtics run going. I think, despite the dark hole the Wolves are currently in, that we got about as much mileage out of KG as possible. He has been used up. With the intensity with which he has always played, it is not surprising.

by ogishkemuncie on Apr 19, 2010 8:23 PM CDT reply actions

KG has always been this way and i hope it never changes

How can people call him classless when he was over there helping up his teammate and asking the other guy to give him respect. Q-Rich, came over and showed his womenly parts by talking trash to an injured player. So all KG did was asked him to move away, when he didn’t KG responded. Next, Q-Rish went at him through the media, KG did not comment back. Then Noah called out KG, and again he didn’t say anything.
Yeah, KG is a punk, because he says what he needs to say and what he wants to say on the court and keeps it private off the court. Btw, did anyone read KG’s response to what happened in the post game presser? He never said anything demeaning about the heat or Richardson. BTW, what KG does in todays game, is nothing compared to what Michael Jordan, and LArry Bird used to do in the ’80’s and ’90’s. There are more men in the WNBA than in the NBA at this point, and KG is one of those men. All in all, did KG deserve that suspension? Yes, Is he classless? Only on the court, but that is where he keeps it unlike many other players in the NBA

by AT-360 on Apr 19, 2010 8:38 PM CDT reply actions

Several bits of "man vs. woman" silliness there

The part where Q Richardson “showed his womenly parts” was my favorite.

KG is a punk because he picks on guys who are smaller or less talented than he is, and then runs away the second someone stands up to him. I love the guy as much as anyone, but he’s always been a bit of an asshole and it’s only gotten worse lately.

Seriously, go look up “KG cheapshot” on youtube and see how many clips come up.

When I get sad, I stop being sad and be awesome instead. True story.

by Xand1 on Apr 20, 2010 2:46 PM CDT up reply actions

I'll be a KG apologist and say

what’s so wrong with picking on guys smaller and less talented when those guys do not show proper respect?

KG has always been a player that respects the game’s history and his elders. I can see him getting pissed when a young/unheralded player does not show him the respect he thinks he deserves.

I’m not saying that ain’t crazy, I’m just sayin’.

"Respect"

gets so damned old.

by feral on Apr 20, 2010 4:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Or you can look up KG interview,

Kobe had a video on youtube where he talked shit about his teammate. By the way, every player in the NBA gives “cheapshots” next time you watch a Spurs game watch TD nudging the opposing player with his knee while the guy is posting, or elbowing him while turning. KG has done this his entire career, i remember him getting up in Shaq and Lebrons grill in the last matchup between the two teams. Its people like you who only look at what you want to and not at the entire picture. You only notice it when he gets down on all fours against Rudy Fernandez but you turn your head when he does the same thing against Amare Stoudemire and David West. He is the kind of player anybody in the NBA would love to have by there side, and you hate to play against him. Tha’ts exactly what any team would want. I remember him doing the same exact thing when he was with the wolves, but people played it off as his passion and love for the game, but now that he is winning everybody says he is an asshole. Yeah, makes a lot of sense, the fact remains that KG has not become any more or less of and asshole than he was before, he is just in the limelight a lot more.

by AT-360 on Apr 20, 2010 5:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Im sorry reareading it, that didn't make much sense did it?

Hahaha, i was just rambling, i meant to say, off the court, Garnett is one of the classiest players in the NBA, while the league loves players like Kobe who off the court curse out their teammates and on the court try to act like Jordan, not knowing that Jordan was just as much of an A-Hole as KG is not more.

by AT-360 on Apr 20, 2010 5:16 PM CDT up reply actions

That elbow

I was embarrassed that KG threw that elbow at QRich. I had to explain it to my girlfriend. “But don’t you like KG? He’s supposed to be cool, right?”

I had to respond, “He was cool. Now he’s turning into a jerk.”

It’s sad. And a stupid jerk, to boot, that’s the dumbest part. Getting suspended in the playoffs for no reason? QRick is laughing his ass off right now.

by princelyfrank on Apr 19, 2010 10:53 PM CDT reply actions

Isn't it contradictory...

To run this post after running the post linked to in this thread? I get that most of the tone is facetious, but the facts still indicate there’s some beef. It just seems like this post makes it clear that KG was actually breaking up something.

As for the suspension, 6 years ago people where calling KG a pussy for not fighting back when Anthony Peeler went after him in the Sacramento series. I’m not saying this incident wasn’t stupid, but it’s a bit two-faced to call him a pussy in one case and a prick in another, particularly because of the stakes; his suspension would’ve cost the Wolves the series, but it’s definitely possible that the Celtics rally and take game 2.

by pagingstanleyroberts on Apr 20, 2010 10:08 AM CDT reply actions

Who called him that?

NBA players get suspended for fighting. I call fighters “idiots,” rather than calling non-fighters “pussies.”

by princelyfrank on Apr 20, 2010 11:04 AM CDT up reply actions

Barry Bonds still has his defenders in the Bay Area

and they look just as ridiculous to outsiders as the KG apologists. I for one don’t know why it causes such cognitive dissonance for some people to admire a player’s skill, and even root hard for the player to perform well when he’s playing for your team of choice, but to acknowledge that he’s an absolute ass.

by dropstep on Apr 20, 2010 10:33 AM CDT reply actions

Right, KG's talent and motor were fantastic. I was as big a fan of his as anybody over the years.

But temperment and leadership are not his strengths. Clutch free throw shooting and offense weren’t good, and the attachment to guys like Hudson/Hassell and Spre and Sam (after WCF) that was disproportionate to their production didn’t work either.

I don’t know where his head is at these days. His antics from the bench in the Bulls series last year were ridiculous.

by Punisher#8 on Apr 20, 2010 10:48 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, that's an appropriate analogy

Bonds cheated to get two of the most-recognizable records in baseball history and allowed his trainer to go to jail for him. KG talks a lot of trash and acts inappropriately a few times per season. Totally apples to apples there.

by pagingstanleyroberts on Apr 20, 2010 11:41 AM CDT up reply actions

PSR

I totally understand where you are coming from on this. it just breaks our hearts to see him go out this way. A player most fans used to love, and now a player most fans love to hate. I find myself cheering against him now, when I used to go to every wolves game. The greatest game I’ve ever seen in person was the night he hit the buzzer beater against a Detroit team when Grant Hill and Stackhouse both went for 30…. We loved Garnett! All fans of the NBA loved Garnett. But somehow the intense side of his personality has taken a nasty, dark turn. Ever since he joined the Celtics and especially after they won the title. Not a gracious winner and definitely a sore loser.

I also agree that his mis-behavior on the court is a small thing compared to all the off-court stuff that goes on in the NBA. KG set such a high standard early in his career, that now he is held up against that as he gets older.

It boggles my mind that he was my favorite player for many years, and now I just find myself cheering against him everytime. Maybe it’s because he left the Wolves, but it seems like more than that. His entire NBA fan base is distancing themselves from him. It’s just sad…

by DR_JPK on Apr 20, 2010 11:49 AM CDT up reply actions

It's not about the cheating

which I won’t even get into. It’s about being an ass. Bonds was easily unlikeable at least as far back as college. He was, however, the absolute best player in the league well before he ever embraced the needle. KG is not among the borderline criminals in the NBA, but he is a jerk none the less. Bonds never punched opponents, so maybe he’s the better guy. They both alienated teammeates, which is more telling. I think the analogy is appropriate.

by dropstep on Apr 20, 2010 11:58 AM CDT up reply actions

What I would add is

sure KG is not one of the borderline criminals in the NBA off the court, but what most casual fans see and KIDS see is him acting like an idiot in the middle of basketball games when everyone is watching. No one wants to see that. Parents don’t want their kids to see that. So in a way, it’s even worse than doing drugs after the game, or carrying guns, etc… because all of your fans see it happen. That is the image left in everyone’s mind.

Would Tim Duncan, Shaq, Kobe, Lebron, Wade, even Carmelo, get involved with a punk like Q-Rich??? They wouldn’t even care…. And they certainly wouldn’t stoop to his level… If Garnett doesn’t start growing up, he’s going to start something much like the Artest fiasco. At this point, Artest may even be more mature than Garnett…

by DR_JPK on Apr 20, 2010 12:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Carmelo did something just as stupid

Actually Carmelo got suspended 15 games for punching Mardy Collins in the face back in 2006. It was one of the stupidest, unneccesary punches in NBA history.

by jama on Apr 20, 2010 12:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes

And my point is that Carmelo learned from that and repented and figured out that he didn’t need to do crap like that. He has cleaned up his reputation and I’ve become a fan… Garnett is spiraling in the opposite direction…

by DR_JPK on Apr 20, 2010 12:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Did he learn?

I could easily see Carmelo getting in another scuffle in the future. I’m not sure he has learned that much.

by jama on Apr 20, 2010 12:45 PM CDT up reply actions

We will see

but my impression is that Carmelo has grown up. He has matured as his game has matured. He let’s his game do the talking. J.R. Smith on the other hand could go off at anytime :)

It’s odd to see an older player who you’d expect to mature become such a hot-headed idiot later in his career…

Even Ron Artest has matured, or at least found the right combination of medications

by DR_JPK on Apr 20, 2010 12:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Plus, Carmelo cut his hair.

That may be the problem here. Garnett doesn’t have any hair.

It’s like the Mark Twain story, where when the virtuous woman was sick, she didn’t have any vices to give up. She was like a sinking ship, with no cargo to throw overboard.

Shaq has thrown plenty of punches

perhaps the most memorable was his “near miss” of Brad Miller’s head. At the first the video looks hopelessly low quality, but it improves.

by littleboxes on Apr 20, 2010 1:29 PM CDT up reply actions

But the point is that most Giants fans weren't defending Bonds being an ass...

They were defending his success despite the huge warning signs. Their irrationality toward the guy went beyond defending him as being a jerk and went into supporting him despite the huge warning signs of cheating. And for the record, I don’t think KG’s a great guy or that these incidents don’t show he has flaws; I just think they’re being overplayed. His on-court personality is meant to psych himself up as much as anything else, and I don’t get the sense that all of his teammates hate him the way all of Bonds’ teammates did.

by pagingstanleyroberts on Apr 20, 2010 12:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Even on steroids

Bonds 73 home runs was a phenomenal achievement. I’m glad I got to see it.

McGuire hit 71 with pitchers sometimes literally serving it up for him.

Bonds’ hits 73 when no one is throwing him any friendly pitches. Bonds record is more like Maris’ in that almost everyone was rooting against the guy.

Also, when Bonds breaks the record 3 years later (2001 vs. 1998) even more pitchers are juicing. It’s steroids vs. steroids, baby!

All these guys put so much (legal) crap into their bodies I’m not sure I even care about steroids anymore. It’s fine line between GNC and HGH.

Maybe if Sam Cassell took steroids the wolves would have a tainted NBA championship!

by littleboxes on Apr 20, 2010 1:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Moral relativity and contorted rationalizations abound

Yeah, those MLB pitchers, willingly giving up home run balls when they have millions at stake. Sure.

This sort of thing makes my stomach turn.

by feral on Apr 20, 2010 4:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Good for baseball

By serving it up I meant challenging the hitter, throwing strikes. These can still be difficult to hit. With Bonds, he set the record for intentional walks and was constantly pitched around, not challenged, but avoided.

They pitched to McGuire and Sosa because it was good for baseball. Many argued at the time that the HR chase saved baseball.

Maris, a superior human being to Bonds, was also pitched around in 1961 because virtually no one wanted him to break the record.

All of the above is true. Bonds feat was amazing, if tainted.

It is being overplayed

but it happened on the biggest stage, playoffs game 1, national TV, everyone saw it, and for goodness sake, the game was over and the Celtics won…

Here's what I don't get

Everyone talks about how NBA players today are way too nice to each other and there are no rivalries (using a little overbearing exaggeration here). In this regard, KG is a throwback. He loves his teammates and hates his opponents. He talks trash all the time, which if you study history, so did all of the greats. The difference is that there is more media today and they catch everything you say. MJ was a bigger dick than KG will ever be. But MJ will still be the great one even after he came back and still wasn’t himself. Why the different treatment?

I for one enjoy KG. I respect the man, but not always the player. Only I don’t believe I always need to respect the player.

A Darko Fan since 2010!

All the greats did not trash talk

And yes Jordan was a dick. He was also smart enough to not show it in publically shaming ways.

I give you that

Fully forgot about that speech. I think he also benefited from selective reporting of some of his bad behaviour.

It's not the trash talking

it’s how he does it. Like Dwyer points out, he only picks fights with Euros and scrubs. And Jordan never got down on all fours to bark at Jose Calderon. You can’t compare the two.
