Give Jonny Flynn a break

Can we get off of Jonny Flynn's back a little bit?  The guy Is forced to play starting point guard, the hardest position, on a terrible team where everyone is learning a new offense, and his coach is outright saying he is making Jonny do things he is uncomfortable with.  Then you knock the guy for not being a breakout player like Evans or Curry??  Give the guy a break.  Considering the situation he did well to keep himself even trying to win towards the end of the season (where his assist numbers finally started to climb).  I admit many of the turnovers he gave up need correction, but that will come once the team "gets" the offense, and clearly his defense needs a lot of work, but he'll come around.  Hopefully that will be next year.  Jonny backing up Rubio makes me excited, and I think those 2 could still be an incredibly dynamic 1-2.

we’d gladly trade him for gallinari

Well according to my NBA 2k10 game...

Flynn needs to stop driving to the basket and taking shots form behind the backboard…

Seriously though, I kinda agree that we maybe should not be too harsh on his play during a year of poor basketball that the coaching staff has taken full blame for.

I still like him

I seem to be in the minority on this site with that opinion. He looked lost on the court this year but I hope he studies and practices hard during the summer and we see a nice jump in his game next year. This year’s draft and FA will help him more than anything – getting some better talent around him.

Flynn is what he is.

More was expected out of a 6th overall pick, and Flynn is absolutely not worth a 6th overall pick. I think the best he could do in the NBA is be a spark plug off the bench for a contending team, nothing against him, he just isn’t big enough and doesn’t have the instincts or jump shot to start. On the other hand, he is one of the worst defenders in the league and it was frustrating to see a clearly better facilitator sit on the bench behind Flynn.

absolutely not worth a 6th overall pick

2009 – Jonny Flynn
2008 – Danilo Gallinari
2007 – Yi Jianlian
2006 – Brandon Roy
2005 – Martell Webster
2004 – Josh Childress
2003 – Chris Kaman
2002 – Dajuan Wagner
2001 – Shane Battier
2000 – DerMarr Johnson

Flynn’s rookie season was obviously not as good as Brandon Roy’s and his upside is probably lower than Roy, Kaman, Gallinari, and Webster. But, his career might end up falling somewhere in the middle of that group, at least ahead of Yi, Childress, Wagner and Johnson. If he improves as a passer, he might surpass Battier, Gallinari, and Webster. In any case, I think it’s too early to make the absolute statements about Flynn being unworthy of his draft spot. I’d rather have Jennings, Curry, and probably Holiday, but it’s very early and Flynn showed some promise as a rook.

one question

at what point when half of the 6th overall picks are worse or no better does Flynn become worth it? We all say it like he was soooo horrible, but he just isn’t that bad. Everyone should just quite their B*(&^ing. Last year sucked and I am just going to forget it ever happened. I won’t lose a wink of sleep over it. I don’t care where anyone was drafted, we only have what we have. Enough with the revisionist history crap.

Important note that this isn’t leveled at you, but the general theme of Flynn is so horrible and needs to go I have been noticing.

I’m with you, TEP. I’m pretty tired of the reactionary madness over the Flynn pick. We really have no idea what Flynn will eventually become. Learning the 1, the triangle, and a non-Syracuse-zone defense is a lot to pull off for a 21-year old kid. With his athleticism, his ability to get into the paint, and decent shooting ability, it’s hard to think he’s not going to improve.

I'm in with Flynn

I saw some glimpses this year and I agree with the author of the post that a Rubio/Flynn PG depth chart might work well. I also agree that the criticism of Flynn this season, especially on this site, was more than over the top.

That said, if it looks better to trade him at any point that should be done, of course, like with any player on the roster.

I'm not defending his play this year

I’ll be the first to admit he didn’t look like a starter on the floor most nights, i’m just saying one year isn’t enough time to say what a guy IS. None of our guys really knew how to play the offense this year. He got more blame cause he’s at the point.

by NYCVike on Apr 29, 2010 7:51 PM CDT reply actions

Sure he's been a little disappointing

But, I agree with the sentiment that he needs at least one more season before any realistic judgement can be made. He’s the 6th pick. The last 12 6th picks:
Ron Mercer
Tractor Traylor
Wally
DeMarr Johnson
Battier
Dejuan Wagner
Kaman
Childress
Martell Webster
Foye (effectively)
Yi
Gallinari

Not exactly an All-Star team. Other than He Who Shall Not Be Named about half of them are solid contributors or better. Several took/are taking a long time to develop. I can’t be convinced that Flynn doesn’t have it in him to be significantly better than Yi, Webster, Foye, Wagner, Johnson, Tractor, and Mercer if he isn’t already.

That's a really good post CaliWolf,

Really puts it into perspective. Flynn certainly has the potential to be better than any on that list. Battier, Childress, and Kaman probably don’t get enough credit though. I am really hoping Flynn gets moved (there won’t be enough minutes when Rubio shows up) but if Flynn doesn’t get moved, he’ll certainly be a nice piece to have on this team. And even though we kinda mock the fact on this site, he really does have a great personality—someone you want to cheer for. I’d certainly rather root for him for the next ten years than Michael Beasley, that’s for sure.

by SF on Apr 29, 2010 8:37 PM CDT reply actions

I’d still take him over the #4 selection in 07’ Mike Conley. There are a lot of so called experts out there who claim Curry could quite possibly be a #1 option, that stings, honestly, if Kahn doesn’t improve this team by next season there will be no fans, apathy is right around the corner.

Give him another year and then decide.

That’s what I say. He is young and has a raw skill set. I wanted to see him attack the basket more like he did in summer league. Maybe Rambis wouldn’t let him or maybe the competition was too much for him. His D has to improve though, that was terrible. I always wanted Curry but I thought he would be a good consolation when we didn’t get him. I’m not comparing him to Evans because he was drafted ahead of him. Curry would have for sure fit our system better this year but maybe we can adjust it to Flynn or Flynn figures it out. It is way to early to tell.

by waldo11teen on Apr 30, 2010 12:28 AM CDT reply actions

My problem is not with Flynn

But with the FO choosing a player that high up based partly on how he came across in the pre-draft interviews. And that Curry didn’t want to come here and didn’t show up for the workout, so we don’t take him.

In other words, I like Flynn and think he’s been put in a very difficult spot (his style is oil to Rambis’ water), my issue is with how he was selected. But I agree, it’s too soon to judge, just have to hope this year goes better and he did show some promise

by Son of Gerald Green on Apr 30, 2010 11:12 AM CDT reply actions

Kahn was just on KFAN with PA

And once again talked about how he thinks Jonny will have a long and productive career, despite a disappointing season. He did make a point of bringing up (without being asked, by the way) how much he liked Tyreke Evans and said that Evans was going to be a special, special player. It implied that he doesn’t think Jonny will ever be that type of a player, which I guess is good from a standpoint that Kahn is at least realistic about that.

by TimAllen on Apr 30, 2010 11:39 AM CDT reply actions

Criticize Khan

He could have traded the 6th pick for assets and still picked up Flynn or Lawson or Collison or just about anybody he wanted. Vitually no one had Flynn going that high.

by Mano on Apr 30, 2010 2:11 PM CDT reply actions

Khan

is quietly Sh&%ting bricks in his office. He needs to get lucky this off season and he knows it. I think we all know they thought they would get Evans/Flynn last year and got screwed on that. If we get screwed on the lottery pick and can’t sign a star free agent Khan is gonna be on the hot seat. Whoever our first draft pick is this year, they need to be a legit star in the making.
