Who will really be available in 2011 free agency?
SnP says that one of the Wolves' strategies may be to keep space open in 2011 to add a big-time free agent. That sounds wise, but upon further review of the actual list of restricted and unrestricted free agents that year, it appears that the candidates will be Melo, Durant, and . . .
. . . who else? Greg Oden? Marc Gasol?? Horford?
Melo's already discussing signing an extension with the Nuggets, and I don't think that Durant will be leaving OKC any time soon. So that not only begs the question of who else might be signable, but is this a good plan for the Wolves? And should they turn down offers that might bring them a top rookie now, but will also tie up cap space for the next few years/

Obviously every deal has to be evaluated on its merits
but I would not consider maintaining cap space for 2011 a high priority.

I don’t want the Wolves to be the ones overpaying the most for Rudy Gay. I think he’ll be a bad contract the minute the ink dries on his signature.
I’m talking myself into absorbing the Brand deal (assuming Jefferson gets moved somewhere in the process) if the Wolves keep #4 (and they should). This would allow the Wolves to essentially keep their flexibility, add Turner + one of DMC/Favors/Johnson, plus one more potential role player later this draft with #23 (assuming 16 goes in the Brand/#2/Al (likely 3-way) deal). They would then have a young core of Rubio, Love, Turner, and mystery prospect #4, + mystery lotto prospect in 2011. The old man of that group would be 22 or 23. Let them gel for a couple years, with Brand serving as the NBA-life mentor/guy who destroys second units on the block.
The sneaky part is if that core develops, they’ll be scheduled to make noise in, you guessed it, 2 or 3 years, when Brand’s contract is either up or tantalized trade bait. They’d have plenty of room to extend whoever’s worth extending, or even maybe add a missing link for the beginning of their window.
Of course, best laid plans of mice and men…. It might not work. But honestly, what other direction are they going to go? They have to do something like this. And even its doomed to fall short, at least they’d be 100% more interesting to follow than they’ve been recently.
I'm convinced.
This scenario seems like the most and only likely way to improve, without adding five overpriced guys in their 30s.
I was one of the early adaptors to the idea that it might be worthwhile
for the Wolves to absorb Brand’s deal to get Turner. Your post defines one of my primary reasons to do so, and that is lack of FA talent next year, but I kept forgetting to include that reason, so it is nice to see you present this item.
I fear the Wolves will just do nothing and save money, can’t even necessarily blame them. But if they spend, I’d rather take on three years of Brand than overpay for six years for someone like Gay or Joe Johnson (we ain’t gettin’ either if we don’t overpay). As you say, if they don’t spend the money now, there aren’t enough free agents next summer either, and there will also be several teams under the cap who missed out this season, or have spent the last couple seasons avoiding long term deals and will see them disappear next summer.
Anyway, good post, and I hope the Wolves see this and get your logic. Bring on Brand to get Turner, and go for there to keep improving the roster.
P.S., I still bet if the Wolves make this deal, they can get a team like NJ to take Jefferson as a way to cut salary. Maybe the three team deal ends up being MN, NJ, and Philly, where Philly is in love with Favors and wants to jump up to #2 to make sure they get him. His combine numbers are sure impressive!
so you would have us
trade both the 4 pick for the 2 and brand (plus we would probably have to throw in a returning player (love or Al I assume) plus use all of our cap space on Gay? What kind of lineup are you envisioning
Flynn/Session (rubio eventually)
Turner/Brewer/Ellington
Gay/Brewer
Love or Al/Pek (not sure how we would bring pek over in this case)
Darko? (could we even sign him while getting Gay?)

How much should Oden get paid?
That question needs to be answered, before Summer 2011 ends. Portland extended Brandon Roy for the max (something like 5 years, $80 Million), and LaMarcus Aldridge for slightly less (5 years, $65-70 Million, depending on incentives).
Depending on what happens to the Wolves front line between now and then, and depending on what Greg shows in 2010-11, it might be smart to bid on him. Not exactly a scenario to bank on, though.
