#4 to Miami for Michael Beasly

It appears the Heat are ready to trade Michael Beasly.   Is the #4 too much to give up for him considering his attitude and off court problems?  He is a small forward who can score a lot of points but has been inconsistent for the Heat and apparently doesn't get along with Wade.  He seems to have a lot more upside than Wes Johnson or a lot of the options we are looking at for the #4 pick.

  1. is way too much to give up when Ryan Gomes will do. As I’ve heard it the primary reason the Heat are interested in moving Beasley is that he is the most movable contract they have that allows them to sign two full max guys under the cap, thus Gomes is a pretty attractive piece to get in return – his salary is comparable to Beasley’s yet only $1 million of it is guaranteed, so he essentially nets them something like $2.7 million (+/-) in extra cap space.

I don’t think I want him even for free, frankly.

Can you say bust?

by Achilles Fang 1 on May 27, 2010 10:25 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Bust?

I’m all for being appropriately critical of players, and beasley certainly has some questions in both his game and motivation, but…he’s a career 46% shooter, he’s a huge small forward who can play at power forward (not that we need that), he has some range (33% career 3 point shooter in a small sample) and he’s 21.

If our 15 win squad doesn’t have a place for him for an expiring contract or similar junk, then you’re crazy.

by TwinATL on May 27, 2010 10:35 AM CDT up reply actions

more like...

He’s too big to play small forward and too small for power forward, so he is stuck without a spot, and has a big attitude and seemingly mental problem. Not really a player that we need.

by TO12 on May 27, 2010 10:58 AM CDT up reply actions

Fair Enough

Positioning is a concern. Mental issues are concerns.

In my opinion, our issues last year where 1) a lack of size, 2) a lack of athleticism and 3) terrible defense.

Beasley is big and athletic and isn’t just a ryan hollins type of “athleticism and no skill” type of player, he CAN shoot, he is a talented offensive player. Are the defense and attitude a question? yeah, it’s why he’s available for peanuts. But if our front office doesn’t trust Rambis and the coaching staff to motivate players and play defense (which is both effort and team dependent, Love and Jefferson both look like a lot better defenders with a real center) then they should fire Rambis right now.

I’d rather take my chances with an athletic, talented group of potential headcases than a group of nice guys that scrap, hustle and suck. Not every group of potential problem teams becomes the Jailblazers.

by TwinATL on May 27, 2010 11:43 AM CDT up reply actions

If he's available for peanuts

why would we give up the #4 for him?

by Esohny on May 27, 2010 12:14 PM CDT up reply actions

whoa

I wouldn’t trade any of our first rounders for him.
Miami is trading him for salary cap reasons so they wouldn’t want that either.

by TwinATL on May 27, 2010 5:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes

Not even close to value. Although he is younger than Wes Johnson. The problem is he doesn’t really have the size to play the 4 nor the perimeter skills to play the 3. He’s also not a great defender. Hopefully down the line- he becomes a Poor Man’s Lamar Odom.

How about the #16 for Beasly

If the #4 is too high what about the #16

by xraraavis on May 27, 2010 10:29 AM CDT reply actions

No

How about a future conditional 2nd rounder? Maybe, if I actually wanted him, I’d give a second rounder this year, but since I don’t want him, I wouldn’t even do that.

Look, Miami doesn’t want a first rounder for him, that will cost them money.

by Eric in Madison on May 27, 2010 10:30 AM CDT up reply actions

Draft picks

are too much for Beasley, unless they’re second rounders. Miami needs cap space, not more guaranteed contracts, hence Gomes would be more enticing to them than a first rounder that they have to sign to a guaranteed deal.

Do you guys

think he’s worth a flier? People call him a bust and underwhelming and all that, but we also talk about getting longer and more athletic.

I’d be interested in finding out if it’s just because he’s a head case that you don’t want him or what – and if so whether you belong to Team DMC or not.

I personally say why not? At the very worst he could probably be traded to a contender looking for a role player at the end of his (Beasley’s) rookie deal (as an expiring).

I think I said this elsewhere, too

but the potential damage caused by having a guy like Beasley around our young players could be worse than any potential benefits that he could have on the court. So, like EiM, I don’t really want him at all.

Doesn't this apply to Cousins as well

If Beasley is a locker room cancer what is Cousins?

It certainly does apply to Cousins

which is why, as most around here are well aware by now, I am a charter member of the Anti-Cousins Team.

Easy answer

He’s a 6’11" 270 bound monster of a cancer… which has more upside than the rehab ridden 235 already a bust.

by midlife crisis on May 27, 2010 10:36 AM CDT up reply actions

Wait.... Every player who has any character question, we don't want now?

There literally are fans who think this way. When Al Jefferson doesn’t “high-five” teammates at the free throw line, they’re ready to declare him a bad apple.

These are individuals. Personality isn’t black and white. In any case Beasley is a different sort of character question (motivation, addiction) than Cousins (temper and whatever else).

(And I’d consider Beasley, at least. You explore every avenue. Mostly I’d expect him to move as part of some sort of 3-way trade this summer – probably with a Miami S&T scenario involving their existing space. Toronto would have to look hard at that if the HEAT were to sign Bosh.)

I think that's a bit of hyperbole to say

“every player who has any character question”. There’s a list of players who have so many red flags from a character perspective that I wouldn’t want them. That list isn’t that long, but Beasley and Cousins are certainly on it. Other members of Tim’s Bad Guy List:

Zach Randolph, Eddy Curry, Ron Artest, Tim Thomas, Kevin Garnett. I can’t think of any others at the moment.

Stephen Jackson used to be a member, but I think i could get on board with Captain Jack.

by TimAllen on May 27, 2010 10:47 AM CDT up reply actions

So would you not have drafted Kevin Garnett?

Perhaps you’re not aware of this, but he’s the greatest player this team ever had. Would you have preferred it if we had not drafted him?

by princelyfrank on May 27, 2010 10:49 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm glad you're not in charge of the team

You wouldn’t want Rondo on your team, or Garnett, but you would take Stephen Jackson, a guy who literally waded into the crowd and started punching fans. And you don’t like Rondo and Garnett because they scowl and make frowny faces and want to win really bad and play really hard. The horror!

I’d hate to see the team you’d put together. Lemme guess – Fred Hoiberg’s the star to build around, and then we’ll fill out the roster with eleven Hoiberg clones?

I see that your disdain for advanced stats extends to regular stats too, like scoring and rebounds and wins. Let’s assemble a team using facial expressions as our one criteria! You have revolutionized team-building, Tim Allen. Your knowledge of basketball exceeds even your safety record when dealing with powerful tools on your popular TV program.

100% correct.

But if they add “has to be a perfect gentleman” to all of their other handicaps, I think they could be worse than what they already are.

Take Turner. I love the guy, and think they should bend over backwards to get him. But did you hear Mark the Shark Titus talking about him on Simmons’ podcast? That’s something that would have raised a red flag on Turner if it would have hit the papers, but because it didn’t, Turner’s looked upon as a high-character guy.

I don’t expect that every player I root for should be John Boy Walton. Even the occasional arrest for a non-violent crime, temper tantrum on the court or sketchy behavior is not a big deal for me. But on the whole, I’d rather root for high-character guys vs. low character guys. That’s it.

I wouldn’t want Kahn to jump on that chance right this second. Eating that much cap room at this moment…. There’s no rush to do that. Miami won’t feel pressure to deal him until near the FA jump ball on 7/1 anyway.

by feral on May 27, 2010 10:43 AM CDT up reply actions

Agreed that you wait until the draft (and any accompanying trades) shake out. This is a move (something like Gomes for Beasley) that you should be able to time with the start of free agency, and I would guess Miami keeps their powder dry until then anyway.

All that said – agree with LoveTo the Wolves need talent. That means rehabbing Beasley and being opportunistic with whomever slips to 4.

Beasley’s situation is odd – from games I have watched, he and Wade are a poor fit together. This is not to say he will be an All-Star with a change of scenery, but it’s not out of the question that he plays better.

by Punisher#8 on May 27, 2010 1:05 PM CDT up reply actions

I think hes being prudent

If he passes on that trade.
You do not want to watch Beasley mope up and down the court, and only put any effort out when he has the ball.

That’s not the player we need on our team, especially if we get Cousins. Those kind of attitudes feed off eachother.

by TO12 on May 27, 2010 11:05 AM CDT up reply actions

Yes it is too much and no he isn't a small forward.

Beasley can’t play small forward anymore than he can play power forward, he’s a tweener just like Gomes except he is a little more athletic. He’s too slow to defend small forwards and to short to defend power forwards, his awful defense and inconsistency are why I have no interest in him, they other stuff is just the cherry on top.

There is no reason to add him just because he can score, he’d basically be replacing Gomes as the designated sf/pf tweener who can’t defend wither position and you can’t count on on a night to night basis.

by Magoo12218 on May 27, 2010 10:35 AM CDT reply actions

The 4 is way too much

I’d like acquire Beasley for as little as possible, but that 4th overall pick is the best chance the Wolves have to acquire some real talent. We tanked the whole damn year and watched some truly miserable basketball to get it, we can’t spend that pick on Beasley, a guy who if he were to re-enter the draft today would not go in the top 10.

by princelyfrank on May 27, 2010 10:44 AM CDT reply actions

Here's my view

I don’t want him because I don’t think he’s very good, and I don’t see the path to him getting better. I’m not so concerned about his attitude because I don’t actually think he’d have a lot of influence over other players. My impression from distance is that he isn’t evil or bad, he’s just goofy and lazy and tends toward depression, perhaps. I don’t think he’d be a strong presence in the locker room either way.

However, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t risk, which is another reason I don’t want him. The risk is opportunity cost. I don’t want to spend a year or two trying to figure out what Miami already knows, that he just doesn’t fit in the league very well. In the meantime, that means they aren’t looking for a real solution.

As for Cousins, it’s a different thing. I’m not sure about him, because I don’t know how his personality will translate to the NBA. We KNOW Beasley’s doesn’t work. However, there’s at least a compelling argument to take the risk with Cousins. He’s huge as well as talented, he has a real position, and the personality issues are different. Whether better or worse, I don’t know, but different.

We Are the Washington Generals

by Eric in Madison on May 27, 2010 10:44 AM CDT reply actions

I get what you're saying

I guess I interpret his situation in a slightly different light – he was drafted to be the #2 guy on a playoff team right away. If he does tend towards addiction he was arguably placed in one of the worst environments in terms of opportunity to party in Miami. He was benched earlier this year and played fewer minutes but still produced. And he differs from Gomes in at least one major significant way – he has the tools to create his own shot.

He’s a risk, but I think he’s at least as good as risk as Cousins is (or as bad a risk as Cousins). I personally view rehab as a positive character sign because at least the person recognizes a problem and is taking a step towards moving through it. He excelled in college in the midwest, maybe he can find his niche in the NBA in the midwest?

I agree that no decision needs to be made on this until just before FA starts. Who knows what the makeup of this team will look like by then. I think he’s worth looking into and for Rambis to take some time thinking about how he might incorporate him and whether the risk/reward is worth it. We’d be stupid to dismiss it outright, although he’d make a hell of a backup 4. We could win 15 more games next year simply by having the best B team in the NBA!

Starters:
Sessions
Turner/Ellington
Brewer/George
Love
Darko

Bench:
Jonny
Ellington/Brewer
Draft pick
Beasley
Pek

I can’t project the 2/3 spots very well, but you get the idea – starters centered around Sessions/Love/Darko and the bench around Jonny/Beasley/Pek. Fun to imagine at the least.

The "Miami party town" argument doesn't hold water to me

Despite what Shaq says, I have trouble believing that players in New York, L.A., Chicago and other big cities don’t have just as many opportunities for partying/getting into trouble.

by TimAllen on May 27, 2010 11:00 AM CDT up reply actions

That's true

but Miami, at least when I worked there, is a city that doesn’t sleep and full of people out about partying and being ‘seen’ and what not. (Caveat – is that the whole town? Of course not. I get that.) I guess my point is that for a guy like Beasley being in any of NY, LA, Chicago, Miami, or similar presents far more consistent and constant opportunity and dare I say pressure (due to various sports, media, and entertainment stars present?) to go out and be a part of the ‘scene.’ Playing in a place like Minnesota or Indianapolis or Utah – while still having night clubs and what not – offers a far different set of circumstances (culturally and otherwise). All we’ve got is Prince, and he doesn’t live here half the time anymore anyways. That’s the extent to which I intend the “Miami party town” argument – more of an observation and difference in context type thing than an argument even.

  1. or even #16 is too much, but I’d definitely trade Gomes’ team option for Beasley in a heartbeat. Has he been a bust thus far? Surely, but let’s not forget that he was probably one of the 5 most highly regarded draft prospects since LBJ’s class.

The DMC doubters keep saying he won’t pan out until he’s with his 2nd or 3rd team….might this theory also apply to Beasley? He is a bit of a tweener, but he might flourish as a PF on a running team.

Not sure where the #4 talk is coming from. Chris Sheridan just had this to say on Insider: “Miami offers Beasley, Daequan Cook, James Jones, $3 million and a future No. 1 to Minnesota for basically nothing. The Heat thereby clear all their contracts and get their payroll down to zero (besides Wade), and the Wolves get the No. 2 pick of the ’08 draft and a future No. 1.”

What would Wolves fans think about:

for

The Hornets shed some salary by cutting Gomes and getting rid of Mo Pete’s contract, while getting a low post scorer in Big Al.

We get West, who would replace much of Al’s post scoring at a lower salary, a Wilkins-like wing player who will expire next season and another lotto pick.

but, despite their financial woes, would NO go for it? I believe that Shinn is trying to sell the team. It’s probably up to any prospective buyers – either they want to keep the team together for now (no trade possiblities for time being) or would welcome the chance for a fresh start with CP3 and Al (trade away).

Shinn is close to selling the team

From what I hear the new ownership is not in the pennies for our stars mode.

Can't see NO doing this

They don’t really save money next year in this exchange (Al $1M for Gomes is only a million or so less than WestPeterson), plus it adds another longer term deal on their books which I imagine they don’t want right now. Giving up the pick saves them that salary, but it also costs them cheap talent.

I can’t see it.

Why not...

…take a chance on Beasley? One of the reasons he went to K-State was to get away from his destructive home environment. The fact is the worst thing that happened to him was to be drafted to Miami and have all the temptations of the party scene. Maybe Minnesota would act as his NBA K-State where he could focus on basketball. I see this as a limited risk, high upside type of move that we all should be rooting for the Wolves to pull off this off-season.

I agree. If the price is low, the return could be extremely high. Worst case, we get rid of him.

It would be a terrible to pass on this opportunity

Miami only does this type of trade if they believe they will be able to sign Wade and Lebron, therefore this becomes what will Miami trade for Lebron. Obviously a team would be willing to pay a lot for Lebron so this is a perfect time to take advantage of the heat.

I don’t think our cap space will be used on a player so I have no problem giving it up in a trade that gets us other assets. This isn’t my favorite trade but I wouldn’t mind doing something like whats mentioned above. Even though I think Beasley will become at worst a solid player, I don’t like the idea of Beasley being the only asset we get back. Along with Beasley I think we should get Toronto’s 1st and Miami’s 1st next year. Also I would swap 23 for 18 which would help both sides by saving Miami money and giving us a slightly higher pick.

#4 is too much

However I think a change of scenery will be good for him. Plus he’s a scorer and he’s had to play second fiddle to D-Wade so his potential is untapped so far. I would do it but not for such a high pick. And certainly not a valuable asset like Rubio either. Maybe something along the lines of Pekovich and #16.

Actually...

Beas isn’t that bad of a player. His only problem is he needs to be the #1 option on the team to be productive and needs a good point guard to feed him the ball. In Miami, he had Carlos Arroyo who would rather pass it inside to JO than to Beasley, but in Minnesota, especially next year when you have Rubio, Beasley can be very productive on the offensive end with Rubio on the court making passes to Beasley since Beasley can be a beast on offense IF given the chance to be a #1 option. Plus, he’s pretty good on the offensive glass. BUT of course he has some glaring flaws, most notably, his defense and his ability, or lack thereof, in playing during crunch time. But he’s young and has lots of room to improve. But I wouldn’t say to do that Beasley for #4 in a heartbeat. But given Beasley’s offensive prowess, and the fact that he could very well be used as a #1 option here due to that, he would definately be worth trading for. For the right price of course.

Follow-up

Seeing as how Beasley is willing to improve, I think it’d be OK to trade the #4 for Beasley and then some.

how do you trade a top five pick

for a player with such glaring flaws? Good lord, the Celtics to Ray “I hit shots without being a chucker” Allen for a 5th overall pick. But a #4 for Michael “I have to be the number 1 option” Beasley? No Thanks. I would simply stop following the wolves if they did something like that.

Terrible to trade for the number four, but acceptable for something else

It is unfathomable to trade the number four for Beasley, but he could fit in nicely if Miami is willing to give him away below market value. If you think about it, in the triangle, forwards are usually receiving the ball on the elbow and in the high post around the foul line. This will give him the same offense he had at K-State, where they threw the ball to him and told him to do work. He could get shots in rhythm off the catch, or drive strong. He could be a guy who could help a lot as long as expectations are low and he is allowed to play his game, which he was not allowed to do in Miami.

Agreed

Miami wants cap room. They would trade Beasley for a round 2 pick and a bag of chips… as long as the chips diddn’t count against the cap.
