The TEP Standard: Draft Requirements

As I am sure you are all aware, we have differing opinions on what draft prospects to select, in what order or in which slot. I do believe however that both Kahn’s and Rambis’s draft desires will agree on two primary requirements for any prospect.

Requirement #1: Any viable draft prospect must be able to play both offense and defense at one position. In other words, each prospect must have a pure position and not be a tweener.

Requirement #2: Prototypical size is the next prerequisite. My best guess is that the size requirements are 6’2’’ for PGs, 6’5’’ for SGs, 6’7’’ for SFs, 6’9’’ for PFs and 6’11’’ for Cs.

Join me after the jump for my rationale.

Recent rumors regarding Kahn’s selection of Flynn over Curry (whether correct or not) was partially based on Kahn feeling that Flynn was a PG and Curry was a tweener. That distinction and the fact that every FA that the wolves brought in were legitimate in only one fashion; they all had a pure position. I think it is pretty obvious that Pavs and Hollins can’t play period, but they did fit the positions if they played up to their potential.

Secondly, I noticed that Rambis comes from the Phil Jackson school of coaching and roster building; that being that players should be of a certain size. The one real exception to this rule is that Flynn does not meet the above threshold. Even Ellington is on the small side. However, all of the FA’s, if I recall, were signed after Rambis was hired and all were of prototype size (if questionable skills), while the draft picks (undersized like they are) were drafted before Rambis was hired.

I think is it a pretty safe bet to assume that whoever the wolves draft this year or pick up in Free Agency; they will be of prototypical size for their pure position. As a side note, I am also pretty sure that players that have both a pure position and can also provide lineup flexibility will be preferred. For example, having a pure SF who happens to be large enough to guard small ball/stretch 4s or a PF who is quick enough to guard Stretch 4’s are going to get the nod over equivalent talent.

Anyone disagree?
