Wolves Updates 6/21
Sources say Wolves no longer talking to Warriors about Randolph and more
From Jerry Zgoda/Star Tribune:
Both Cousins and Favors possess the kind of size and reach that Jefferson and Love lack. If Kahn indeed trades any players currently on his roster this summer, he must decide whether to do so this week or wait perhaps for what he calls the "fallout" from a free agency period that will hum once James, Wade and Bosh, among others, decide their futures.
Gomes could go because of an unusual contract clause that will pay him nearly $3 million if the team doesn't pick up his option for next season. Flynn, whom Kahn drafted right after Rubio high in last year's draft, is a possibility, too, for the right deal.
"This is a weird year nobody has confronted before," Kahn said. "We need to get our arms around how this particular summer will play after the music stops and all the chairs are filled. It's going to be a strange summer that will feel like it will never end."
From Tim Kawakami/Mercury News:
Several NBA sources said over the weekend that the Warriors and Minnesota are no longer having trade discussions about Anthony Randolph heading to the Timberwolves.
"Not happening," one league source said. "Dead."
It’s unclear how serious the two teams ever got–ESPN.com first reported the talks earlier this month. And I’d heard for a while that Minnesota was very interested in adding Randolph in an effort to change-up their front-line chemistry and that, at the very least, the Warriors would listen.
It’s not out of the question that the Warriors could explore moving Randolph again, whether it’s to Minnesota or to another interested team.
From Tom Powers/Pioneer Press:
The Wolves, on the other hand, always have a chance to stumble across an immediate impact player. The consensus appears to be that they will take small forward Wesley Johnson with the No. 4 overall pick. That appears to be the safe choice. Johnson turns 23 in a couple of weeks, and that is old for a rookie. He might start to creak before the Wolves turn it around.
More daring moves include trading up for the No. 2 pick so they can grab Evan Turner. Or trading down to where they still can draft, say, Al-Farouq Aminu while acquiring other assets in return for the swap. The Wolves also might look to work a deal so they can draft Bloomington's Cole Aldrich with their second pick — and then hope he doesn't turn out to be another Greg Ostertag.
From The Hoops Market: Nikola Pekovic could decide to stay one more year in Panathinaikos
From Chris Murray/Reno Gazette-Journal:
We caught up with Sessions during his youth basketball camp at the South Reno Athletic Club this week to talk about his season, potentially welcoming two more Wolf Pack players to the NBA and the upcoming draft.
RGJ: How would you describe how your season went? It probably didn't go as you envisioned when you signed with the team in the summer (Minnesota's 15-67 record was the second worst in the NBA).
Ramon Sessions: "It was a long season, but it was also a learning process. We were a young team with a new coaching staff and a new general manger, so it was a learning process. I wouldn't say that we tanked it or that we threw the season away. We learned a lot of things and hopefully next year it will show."

Kinda glad to see Pekovic waiting
although I hope he keeps the option open in case we find a really good trade for him. Too many moving pieces this summer to want to add yet another offensive minded big.
Buckeyes are red, Wildcats are blue,
I wanted Evan Turner, But DeMarcus Cousins will do.
Hopefully Sticky Fingers

Any given deal is 'undead' at this point unless it's immediately contingent on the draft.
Sure, the Wolves and Warriors aren’t actively talking, and if the deal was about draft picks proper we’ll know it’s basically out of the picture by Friday.
But when two teams walk away from something like that, the groundwork is there. There might be some sticking point that could come unstuck, and then it’d happen. This summer in particular, it may pay to have a Swiss Army Knife of options, established possibilities. It’s a good thing to be ahead on those sorts of possibilities.

I'd say the opposite happens
There’s plenty of disagreement on this site and usually posters from other teams are so trollish that everyone on the site bands together to refute their Kool-Aid drinking ideas.

I'm totally into those posters.
But that’s not Stinky. Look back at Stinky’s history. Look at Stinky’s sig lines.
When we go to other teams’ sites, I hope we’re not like Stinky. Anyway I try not to be.

Zgoda is odd about Kahn's vocabulary.
The guy uses expressions I wouldn’t blink at here, and somehow Jerry is shaking his head at the whackiness of “fallout.” What 5th grader wouldn’t know how Kahn was using it, there?
“Bifurcate” is a word. We know what “shadow government” is (and I kind’ve wish Kahn had actually had one). And yes, Viking fans, the word “schism” is really pretty ordinary.
"People do not seem to realize that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character."
The proper spelling is 'kinda'
…a very useful contraction, like ‘gotta’ and ‘lotta’
If kind've is like would've
It would mean kind have. Nope, doesn’t work. All this waiting for the draft and all the trade scenarios is driving me wacky. I so hope we finally make the right pick, and I hope Khan doesn’t trade away the #4 for Carmelo, because we don’t have the pieces in place to build around Carmelo. We need a stud in the draft. I get this crazy feeling that almost the entire roster will be blown up. No one is safe, nor should they be.
yes
but people actually say “kind’ve.” It doesn’t sound like “kind of” but it sounds like “kind’ve.” Common usage makes it a word.
How’s that for crazy!
C’mon draft!

Yes, the Timberwolves:
An endless game of musical chairs at the top of the NBA draft, and we know who doesn’t get a seat.
"People do not seem to realize that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character."
Nothing odd about that
Zgoda simply uses the time-honored journalism convention of using “what he calls” as a preface to putting the source’s exact words (in this case, “fallout”) in quotes. No shaking of the head at what you call “whackiness” (my dictionary spells it “wackiness”) that I can detect. What I find odd is your drawing attention to this, as if it’s somehow important..
I can live without this last sentence
This post is a solid observation, one I’m sure feral appreciates. Nothing in these comments sections is all that important, and of the stuff that is at the very least intellectually engaging, feral makes substantive contributions.

Well, yeah, I hardly said it was keeping me up nights.
Mostly I just think there’s a sort of anti-intellectual tone to sports reporting that’s, well, stupid. Like the “schism” thing with Favre last year, you know? Someone suggested there might be a schism in the locker room, and then we heard a bunch of “I don’t even know the word; whaddayu mean, schism?! We got no schisms in here” responses.
But yeah, sometimes posts on blogs are just odd, tangential reactions to stuff. If you’d like we can haggle over Wes Johnson’s free throw form or something….

I’d just like to wake up and it is Friday morning, and we knew what went down during the draft. I’m getting antsy.

I'll be away, camping, as I usually am when the draft comes around.
But I plan on visiting the same bar I did last year to catch most of the first round. After I leave is probably when a trade will happen and I will have missed out on an action I have been waiting months for. Only to hear about it the next day and the reactions surrounding it before I make my own judgements. I only hope it’s good reactions.
Since the PA rumor came out
I’ve been visiting KFAN’s Rube Chat much more than I ever should. And unfortunately, the discussion here is looking very Rube Chat-ty. We need this draft to happen….we’re all a little too antsy.
It's been too long
The problem with a team this bad is we’ve all had way to much time to think about the draft, and too much hope that the draft will be the answer. I think we will all be disappointed when it is over, because we’ve built it up so much. But I think the off-season to follow should be really interesting, and instead of those dinky little deals to save money that went on last year, there should be some significant deals to make the team better happening this year.
Agreed
But that is what will make it even harder.
We won’t be able to really evaluate things until months from now and we’ll never be sure the dealing is done until the summer is done.
On the bright side: CH page views UP!
True.
Still, draft day is a line in the sand. We all know something is going to happen on Thursday. Will there be a trade, multiple trades? Do the Wolves move up or down? Do they stay at fourth? Do they pick Johnson with the 4th? Do they pick BPA, and the more valuable asset, in Cousins?
There should be a whole lot more to the story over the course of the summer, but those stories and developments will bubble up from time to time and then something may or may not happen.
This waiting on the draft stuff… I just can’t seem to help myself from constantly checking out the chatter. I need that to be done. I have too much to do at work.

Agreed
If we stay at 4, 16, 23, I think I’ve landed at this for best case:
Cousins, George, Crawford.
Athletic presence/future star in the middle and some scoring from the wings.

SF Chronicle: Nelson likes Monroe...
A story in the SFChron this morning quotes coach Nelson as saying he really likes Greg Monroe. He’s been there for workouts, Nelson loves his passing ability, says he is the best college passer in the draft. Better than Wall? Yes, Nelson waits for the question, and says Wall is great and all, but Monroe is a better passer than Wall. Also has a complete high post and low post game and jumper out to 18 feet.
The story also says that while DMC and Favors are limiting their workouts, or preferring to work out only against folding chairs, Monroe will go anywhere and do anything. The Warriors workout was 3 on 3, against Omar Samhan among others.
Of course, Donny is building the hype for the man that will be left when they draft. Regardless, there are players in the draft beyond the top 4, or 5, or whatever.
Is Don Nelson
even going to be coaching them next year? When’s their ownership change?

Hairpiece. Oh, the humanity.
"People do not seem to realize that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character."
Didn't know where to put this
but apparently we are going to get an interview with Paul George and also with Ronzone coming up soon (I believe on the TWolves website).
Buckeyes are red, Wildcats are blue,
I wanted Evan Turner, But DeMarcus Cousins will do.
Video is up
Notable comments: Wouldn’t mind playing here, he knew Jonny Flynn and Corey Brewer and also knew that we had a couple other wings on our team… what? He was trying to say the right things at least!
Tony Ronzone is here and slightly longer so I’ll let you watch yourselves.

haha
where else could the timberwolves possibly be considered to have great length, even Brewer is a stretch (no pun intended)
by NuthinBurger on Jun 21, 2010 4:26 PM CDT up reply actions
Ronzone is cool to hear from.
He’s able to contrast George as a Freshman last year with now…. Seen him maybe 10 times, he says. He’s very complimentary about George’s ability to pick up stuff in drills, talks about him being a coach’s kid. The guy just seems to know his players, cold.
Also interesting for the window into the draft process and how it works. “Our board’s pretty good, it’s pretty solid. Um, you know, these workouts are more for our coaches.” Like Kahn’s said, again, the workouts are about how a guy picks up on new material, drills and so on, thrown at him. It would be really, really good to get Cousins in here for a look in that sense.
They’re working from 3:00 to 10:00 tonight, sorting that board.
’’For us, we just sit back at 4, and we just…. See what comes to us."
"People do not seem to realize that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character."
Also, asked about the relationship with Kahn,
He describes them going back and forth with things, trying out ideas…. It doesn’t sound like an unhealthy thing where people are skulking around second-guessing without saying it out loud at all.
Ronzone’s his hire, and they seem like they’re doing the right stuff.
"People do not seem to realize that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character."
Kahn Doing Work.
This is my semi-uneducated guess of what Kahn is going to do:
Trade Al + 23 to Toronto for Bosh. Trade Love, Ellington + 16 to Philly for the #2 (Evan Turner). Trade Pek + Flynn to Indiana for the #10 + filler. He drafts Evan Turner at #2, Wes Johnson at #4, and Ekpe Udoh at #10. He then drafts G. Vasquez at #45 (to back up Sessions). He then signs Darko.
Lineup:
PG: Sessions/Vasquez (Rubio)
SG: Turner/Brewer/FA
SF: Johnson/Brewer
PF: Bosh/Udoh
C: Darko/Hollins/FA
This is not going to happen, but it’s fun to think about. Thoughts? Should Love be untouchable in this type of scenario?
And abruptly, the Wolves become a team that can shoot from outside and doesn't post up much.
How startling would that shift be?
"People do not seem to realize that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character."
It would be startling, but wouldn't Cousins occupy that post-up role?
Think about a combo of Bosh and Cousins. They would terrorize teams.
Yeah – though our poster here said Johnson.
But I agree. That’d be a terror, if Cousins isn’t attacking Tokyo instead of attending to every word Rambis-san says.
"People do not seem to realize that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character."
I think
I’d still rather have Turner, Johnson, Bosh than Turner, DMC, Bosh. I don’t think DMC and Bosh would fit very well together.
Hell, I’d take one of Turner/Wes + Bosh for next year. That’d be a way more entertaining team, and a significantly more winning team too.
"Styx might be the mullet of bands."
Chris Bosh as your inside scorer, then.
Okay. Whatever floats the boat.
"People do not seem to realize that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character."
Bosh and Cousins
wouldn’t fit? How did you come to that conclusion?
Bosh lives in the high post as a face-up slasher/jumpshooter. He and Cousins would be almost ideal next to each other. Cousins can guard C’s, score down low and clean up messes while Bosh creates from the high post. Those two could be incredible.
Interviewer: Can you understand why teams value potential ahead of experience and accomplishment in the draft? Wes Johnson: "Yeah. I understand. It’s the youngness of everything – older guys like young women, so it’s the same way."

I suggested Johnson at first
But replied and said either Johnson or DMC could be chosen at #4. I was hoping to get everyone’s opinion.
Overall, do you think this is possible? Would we be better off for it?
by Luis Rivas on Jun 21, 2010 1:50 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
I don't think
Indy will trade the 10 to us for that. If anything I think you might have to give up Al + something + 16 to get Bosh. Not sure what Philly would take for 2 – would almost have to be Love and 4. I don’t think they’d be interested in Pek (maybe they would, though, as he is a center), but I’d certainly try a Love/Pek/23 offer. Otherwise you could try and get Houston to bite on Pek for 14 and then trade Love/14/23 for 2 and take Turner.
Rubio/Sessions/Flynn
Turner/Brewer
Wes/Brewer
Bosh/peanuts
Darko/peanuts
"Styx might be the mullet of bands."
To me:
That deal with Indy seems like a steal for them. They get two solid guys to plug in their rotation for the #10 pick.
As for the Toronto trade, what offer do you think they can get that is better than Al + 16/23? Just curious…
by Luis Rivas on Jun 21, 2010 2:15 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
The thing with Indy
is that everyone thinks they’re desperate for PG, much like everyone thinks we’re desperate for Turner, and I’m not so sure about that. I guess thinking about it a bit more Flynn and Pek might be enough for 10 for them, but I think they’d almost guarantee that we take back Ford (their biggest, worst contract). That’d be a non-deal for me.
As for Toronto, I’ve heard that they’re interested in Bynum. I think Bynum’s got better upside than Al, but I suppose we have more assets to sweeten the deal. I’ve also heard that Varejao might be on the table too, sending Bosh to Cleveland with Lebron. I guess that’s where I was coming from in thinking that Toronto might try and leverage those teams’ offers into more from us. Looking at these offers, though, and Al actually looks like a pretty good fit for Toronto next Bargnani. Al’s still young, plays inside to Barg’s outside, and we could throw in a higher pick than either LA or Cleveland in a deep draft. The only issue is getting Bosh to agree to come here.
Right now I have to admit that Bosh is my biggest FA target to get to come here. I think he settles the roster down a lot more for us and makes the draft much more straightforward. Helps that he’s pretty young too (Al’s age, I believe).
"Styx might be the mullet of bands."
biggity2bit:
Regarding the Indy trade, check out the fanpost by bbeeck. Looks like they need a PG more than we thought. Haha.
Ahh the irony of this:
Indy will trade the 10 to us for that.
