3rd Pick/Martel Webster Open Thread
The Wolves finally take the BPA and they trade him away. Keep on keepin' on Mr. Kahn. First you gave Sacramento another big bruiser, now you gave a 3 point crazy team one of the best shooters in the draft. Well done sir, well done.
BTW: We're working on confirmation of the Webster rumor. Nothing official yet. Confirmed.

I am curious how they justify this one. Babbitt would have been a great shooter off the bench and Webster has done jack in his career.
Webster is older, paid more, with less upside. This cuts into our cap.
It's as if Kahn is systematically attempting to avoid any upside at all.
We had three first-round picks. We have used them on what amounts to replacement-level talent.
As a measure of how inept that move is, Sludge and Lake were ecstatic about it on the radio. Which can only be an awful, awful sign.
"People do not seem to realize that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character."
Terrible move by a terrible GM for a terrible team.
Ugh.

Because Babbit Can't Guard
When did Babbit become some great catch? Babbit is slow footed and will not be able to guard anyone in the league, where as Webster plays pretty good defense. He rebounds well, and has proven he can score in the NBA. Personally I like the move. Still young, can run the floor, and can score from inside and out.

Marko Jaric could defend some.
Marko Jaric’s aggregate stat numbers are generally better than Webster’s, for their respective NBA careers.
Jonny Flynn as a rookie shot better than Webster for his career.
"People do not seem to realize that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character."

Has to be more...
If the Webster trade is on, it must involve #22 or it would have gone public by now…
"I'm gonna make you cry...I'm gonna make you cry and dip my cookie in your tears!!!"
And if there's not...
Kahn just got fleeced by a guy that got fired today…
"I'm gonna make you cry...I'm gonna make you cry and dip my cookie in your tears!!!"
Just wait.
Whiteside is still on the board. And Portland will probably take Anderson @ 22.

Where are the Kahn defenders tonight??
Man I was so happy with that Babbit pick. Could almost justify passing on Cousins. Just not to be, Kahn you win. I’m defeated. UNCLE

Welcome aboard
I just signed up for the fire Kahn club earlier tonight.
Come on in, take a seat, have a drink.
I thought before tonight...
…there was a chance that Kahn was crazy like a fox…now I know he’s just crazy.
I actually like Webster, fine with the Babbit trade I guess
Of course, I’d be more fine with it if Cousins was the pick at 4. This is just my hopeless optimism at work here.

Have you looked at Webster's productivity over his 5 seasons?
He’s a year older than Wes Johnson, and if anything he’s proven that he can’t play.
"People do not seem to realize that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character."
Portland's had a giant backlog at the swing position, the 2/3
I wouldn’t look at his “production” necessarily; I’d look at what he’s done when given the chance.
by googoleeoottooooleeoottooooleeeatta on Jun 24, 2010 8:52 PM CDT up reply actions
I'm not judging it by his points per game, dude.
Take a look at any “advanced” stat. His career PER is 11.6, for example. The guy has not played well in the minutes he’s gotten. He’s got two years left at around $5 million each, so he’s taking up way more cap space than Babbitt would have too. If you wanted room under the cap, this trade sacrificed a lot of that for literally nothing that would justify that in terms of trade value.
This is a player Portland should be paying you to take off their hands.
"People do not seem to realize that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character."
John Hollinger, go home.
You lost me at PER
What basic number convinces you?
His shooting percentage is lower, for his career, than Jonny Flynn’s lofty number last year as a rookie. Does that excite you?
"People do not seem to realize that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character."
As a Blazer fan, I am sorry to see Webster go
Martell was in a 3 way fight for minutes his first few years with the team. When he finally got the job, he was out for the season with injury. Last season he was fighting for minutes again but played well when called upon (something that can’t be said for Rudy). Martell did not regularly score a ton of points but our offense goes through Aldridge and Roy first then whomever is hot picks up the slack. Martell could go off for 25 one night then give you 5 the next but he always played solid D, he is fierce on the break, and accepted whatever minutes he earned with a lot of class.
I frankly can’t believe we traded our best guy off the bench at the 2/3 spot for a shooter that can’t do anything else and trade fodder.
Yeah, I know what you're saying. The points per game was a low blow though.
Holding out hope, I guess.
That said, Rudy Fernandez’s Win Shares/48 minutes this year? .101
Martell Webster’s? .105!!!! YES.

why
we don’t need bad shooters
that's a stretch
This year, at the age of 23, Webster had a TS% of 54 and an eFG% of 50 with 37% from the 3point line.
this year, at the age of 23, Brewer had a TS% of 50, eFG of 47 with 34% from the 3point line with considerably less attempts.
But I just that it was Babbit/Gomes for Webster….yeah, can’t defend this anymore.

why wouldnt it be rudy
he doesnt want to play for portland
As a Blazer Fan I entirely agree, why could it not have been Rudy
Rudy wanted more minutes and when he got them he choked. Webster is a much better defender, has NBA size, can take it to the rim as well as shoot the 3, and and accepted his role on the team.
Rudy sees the floor well and runs a good break. He shoots well as long as it isn’t in the clutch or in the playoffs. He gets bullied by defenders though with his slender build and disappears when you need him most.
He sells a lot of shirts to the ladies though.

Like countless prospects before him,
he’s been lauded for looking as if he can hit shots.
It’s funny how people who have no patience or understanding for assessing how a player’s performance translates into results – too much trouble – suddenly become all misty when they look at someone’s elbow as he shoots. They can’t divide two numbers to get a percentage, apparently, but their eye for shooting mechanics is first rate. They think.

The KFAN show, which is listened to a little on the way home just now, is actively offensive to real fans. Their repeated attempts to justify deals like this one because “rubes” don’t recognize who Martell Webster is.

Between Oklahoma City and San Antonio, I have seen two vivid reminders in the limited time I’ve watched this of why the Wolves stink.
I’ve been a fan of this organization since its inception. Saw games in the dome. I might be done after tonight. It’s really quite sad how attached I am to this team, but I am deeply, deeply depressed. My heart actually hurts. I hope there’s some ludicrously ingenious plan behind all of these moves. But probably not.
i'm guessing crawford
Kahn needs to market to the masses
Get ready to welcome
Michael Redd to the team.
Why would we want Webster?
Didnt we just draft a SF and dont we have another young promising SF in Corey Brewer? If your gonna make a trade to Portland…..Trade for Rudy Fernandez WTF ALREADY that is a worthless trade!
I feel so sorry for that guy with the Wolves jersey.

First senior picked in the first round is…Trevor Booker. Wow. Didn’t see that one coming. Not sure how I feel about Minnesota’s draft. Eek
We draft
A undersized PF. Bring on Simmons

Undersized PF. Loved him in college, but this is silly.

David Kahn working the NBA draft is like watching Clint Dempsey against Algeria.
Man, I’m having problems with this. The worst year in franchise history, and they’re walking out of the draft with Wes Johnson, Martell Webster, and Trevor Booker. They had a cache of picks and Jersey’s practically posted a FOR SALE sign to move down from #3… I can’t stand it.
it's more like watch Australia play Germany. Inept.

I like Booker
No way he’s going to the Wolves though. He’s not long or athletic. Who cares if he’s productive.
Talking myself into DeMarcus Cousins since 5/18/10
I can't stop laughing.
We really are the bad news wolves.

An undersized PF?
If they are going to do that why not draft Damion James?

somehow, Wes looks like a great pick (in comparison to the last two moves)

If after the draft
We end up with one starter and a replacement for Damian Wilkins… Jesus.
I keep hoping that one of the talking heads will rip Kahn. But they just expect a Kahn disaster. sad.

They must have sold this pick.
bummer. worst draft ever.

Way to go Kahn!
Three PGs last year- Three SFs this year!
What a maroon!!
not crawford or whiteside?
im thinking booker is not long for this team.
liking the webster trade though. great spot up shooter that we dont have.
spotup shooter we don't have?
in case you missed it, we grabbed wes johnson at 4…
Positives:
They’re not going to pay Rudy Gay $70 million over 5 years.
This may be the beginning of the end of the David Kahn era. I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt but…it’s gone. At least he can’t smugly imply this mess of a team isn’t his fault anymore.
What an ass.
Don't think they'll go for Gay
Now that they have Wes
Booker is just too far
that has to be someone else’s pick.
It makes perfect sense
If there’s a deal for Al on the table.
Al for Iggy?
I will not watch another second of Wolves basketball until Kahn is gone...
In the past 21 years I’ve watched or listened to 80% of the putrid franchise’s games, I’m truly done. They should just move the franchise…
how many seats will be filled next season
im guessing about 20
Im in the boat...
where I liked Wes… but the rest is a mess
Really?
We need 5 2nd round picks? What the hell for?

Why did we trade for Webster? We just drafted a STUD IN JONHSON and we have another young promising SF in Corey Brewer!!!! And Booker dont we already have enough Weak PF’s? We need a promising Big man Center…..Darko is Shit Stain….

We're saving money
Crawford! Crawford! Crawford!
Booker is a TERRIFIC pick
Undersized but nasty, high-energy, athletic four who can rebound and score. Hollinger, Ford, and Fraschilla all called him one of the true undervalued sleepers in this class.
Jessuz, I don’t believe you guys. Who would you have picked?
Kahn
took the worst player in the top 5. then traded away our other 2 first round picks for guaranteed picks. We got taylored again.

what does the 30 and 35 get us?
at some point we need quality not just quantity, unless kahn knows about a rule change that you can play 7 shitty players in place of 5 good ones
how could we possibly keep this putrid franchise over the vikings

our night
Kahn is only stupid in my opinion that he let it be known who he liked if he like johnson he should have taken cousins and traded him to sac or some other team. 2 I think that the Webster trade is not all that bad. Look at it like this name one white small foward that has been any good in the last 10 years in the nba. Wally Luke Jackson ect the list goes on. I now think we have some depth on our team but I still dont like the Johnson pick
Just a point...and a small one at that.
One reason I think they moved Babbit, is that first round NBA contracts are guaranteed. 2nd rounders are not, and a high second round pick is generally considered a little more attractive than a lower first, just because of that 1st round guaranteed money.
I have no idea why Gomes needed to be thrown in the mix. Babbit straight up for Websters contract would have made some sense. The addition of Gomes baffles me.
David Kahn, ladies and gentlemen: Helping to keep the Wild’s sellout streak alive by giving Minnesota sports fans no other relevant winter sports teams. The Wolves are a running national joke for a number of years now, and it doesn’t look like things are turning around anytime soon.
I live in Portland am a Blazer fan...
Martell Webster doesn’t sound like the most attractive name, but I believe if given the playing time, which he should get on the Twolves, he will be 15-18 ppg man. In January he was unstoppable, hitting 3’s left and right, some nights he would have 5 or 6 3’s by half and finish with 25. He played well because he knew he would get th playing time every night and that no one would take his minutes. When Nicolas Batum came back, Martell played to not make mistakes and didn’t play like the real Martell. He shows flashes of brilliance some games, and it is easy to forget he is 23 and only 9 months older than Wesley Johnson.
Im not saying that the trade is great for the Twolves because the add in of Gomes is pretty rediculous, but I believe Martell won’t be as bad as some think.
Good luck next year and go Kevin Love! ( he used to destroy my high school basketball team lol)
"Good, Better, Best, never let it rest until your good is your better and your better is your best." Tim Duncan
By the numbers, Martell Webster last year played like he has his whole career.
And incidentally? The reminder about Johnson’s age is only salt in the wound.
"People do not seem to realize that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character."
I think the folks on this board are grossly exaggerating Babbit's ceiling
I’m going to go out on a limb and make the following bold prediction about him (do like his stroke, of course):
Given that:
He is not strong
Or fast, either going forward or laterally
His first step looks like he’s pulling his foot out of a patch of sap
I think that:
He will never be even an average defender in the NBA
He will be a mediocre rebounder
His offense will likely involve situational catch and shoot for 10 minutes a game
That guy needed a stupid number of shots in college to be productive. He’s getting 3-5 a game tops for the next few years. Martell will never be a star, but he is so much more physically gifted than Babbit he can hang on lots of teams as a low-level starter. It makes sense from Portland perspective as we only need some spot minutes at 3 to open up some trade flexibility. Losing Gomes contract, from an outside perspective, seems … unwise. I guess we will see. Good luck folks, your frustration is understandable. If its any consolation, and I’m sure it will not be, we just fired the guy who “fleeced” you. Sigh.
by Sound_Automatic on Jun 25, 2010 2:53 AM CDT reply actions
The Pritchard firing is so heinous, it tops Kahn's draft performance. Only just.
"People do not seem to realize that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character."
another Blazer fan
I am no expert on Gomes, so I won’t try to talk you all into being happy about the trade. But about Martell: you’re getting a better player and team member than you think.
First, he is a solid class act and good guy.
As a player, he came in lauded for his shot. He is streaky, however, though he sometimes comes up big at big moments. He still has a lot of unrealized offensive potential and really is quite an athlete.
Here’s what may surprise you: the guy plays GOOD defense, and he plays HARD. He gets some good rebounds and is a very talented shot-blocker. And he is a thoughtful, smart player.
It’s possible that with consistent knowledge that he is a starter, he will take off. He did lead the NBA in 3’s made in January, after all. I don’t know if he will turn the corner with his offensive game or not. The good news is that even if he doesn’t, you’re still getting a good team guy and a pretty good, solid, young player.
