Before "judging" the draft or anything lets look at the roster in September!!
Was this draft a disaster as many have said?
I don't think so. We added two talented athletic wings who can play defense and some players to stash in Europe. We still have our money available to get a free agent. We still have Rubio and Pekovic as assets.
Might Cousins be the best talent in the draft. Maybe? But maybe not also and if he is, there will be 4 GM's with egg on their faces not just Kahn.
Wes could be rookie of the year in my view. He could be that good. He is also a team player with lots of maturity. Many people are upset because he is 23 and not 19 but they forget that most players came into the league after college until not too long ago. Bird was 24 when he came into the NBA. Most players who start younger break down earlier. We are seeing that now with KG and many others. Kobe is the exception, but he also didn't play a lot in his first few years.
Martell Webster is a good addition. He has played excellent defense at times stopping great players like Durant and Kobe . With two wings who can be defensive stoppers - Brewer, Webster, Johnson - that will be it easier for Jefferson, Love etc to stop penetration. They will have much more defensive help out on the wing. Webster is also a very good 3 point shooter. Thats why Kahn got webster, much better defender than Gomes and also an excellent 3 point shooter.
Must admit I don't know much about our other pick ups, so I won't comment.
But I'm guessing we didn't go after a big man because we are keeping Jefferson and Love and going to sign Pekovic and resign Darko.

I like
The wing defense point, I hope this is true. As for Webster’s offense, he’s supposed to be a good 3 point shooter but actually he’s pretty average, a 37% shooter from 3, and bad from 2, around 42% I think

Ya his stats are a little low...
I was guilty of saying he was a good shooter in another thread…I may be wrong but he is awesome off the ball it seems and can slash a little.
Defense if going to be key…good defense leads to more fast breaks and players like those added yesterday will be excellent in that environment.
I am really trying to stay positive here, and all though the draft didn’t go how I wanted…it still added some improvement and athletic depth to our team which is everyones number one bitch…I say keep it up. We still need a big move and it will come.
It’s always easy to judge from the outside looking in.

blazersedge.com on Webster -- a post from yestrerday
…sorry, I cannot find it now, but it had a very long number of comments from blazersedge fans on Webster. They were all from about May 13 2010 (they seem to have even more posters than CH, and similar quality posts).
To summarize: They think he is a better 2 than 3, he is a strong defender, he can score in bunches but lacks consistency. The Blazers played him at the 3 most of the time, for whatever reason, possibly Roy related. And Webster would cover the toughest guy defensively.
The most interesting bit was a map of where he takes shots on the floor, and his record from those spots. It was remarkable. He had much higher success rates from the left side, and shot under 10% from some spots on the right side.
Looks like he can be very effective if we can get him open on the left side, and his shooting % will improve dramatically. Of course, other teams will try to deny that. And of course our development guys would try to improve the weakness.
Regardless, the guy has talent, and we can be pretty sure that Rambis has plans for him.
I like the holes that we filled in the draft.
Johnson at 4 I have no problem with
Webster for the 16th is ok with me because I am not sold that Babbitt will ever score 24 in a quarter and won’t even be on the same level defensively.
Gomes is replaced by “the other Hayward” – who played 2 places out of his position at 5 -
NB is a great pick up — even if we wait a year or two
PP is Nene lite — err actually heavy and projects to be Perkins minus 10 Ts
Barring our new backcourt’s gorrilla arm length…and whatever we eventually end up with for Al……this is not bad at all.
If we somehow end up with Bosh or someone else “out of the blue” then we have a nice lineup for the next 3 yrs minimum !
Its true
Even Simmons loved the Webster trade. Interesting. He might fit our system very well.
Good post
The key for this team is going to be the big trade they will make with Al Jefferson. We talk about it this summer, but if we really want to be patient we get Al fit and healthy to start the year, get his numbers up (Love take one for the team) and then deal him when his value is much higher than it is now (say from Dec. to all-star break range). Hopefully we’ll get some blue-chipper who’s just not fitting in somewhere.
I do feel a lot better with the draft knowing Rambis was involved. Not that coaches make great GMs, but they know how it’s going to fit together.
Last night's draft was terrible...
however I am hopeful that we didn’t select all of these guys (or trade for them) for our team. Maybe we have a futre deal set up with say Sacto who now has Thompson, Dalember, Cousins and Landry to man the 4/5 spots and only Casspi, Garcia, and Green for wings. Maybe we will trade Webster for Whiteside and/or whaterver for who knows. Let’s hope. I’m sill hopeful Al will be traded. Also welcome back KLJ. I like the optimism.
Wing Defense
One problem, Corey Brewer isn’t a good defender and we don’t know if Wes Johnson will be able to defend NBA caliber players one on one yet.
That's completely subjective...
Others would disagree with you and the numbers about a player’s defense are largely based on how good the team’s defense is.

Cory Brewer?
His problem on defense is that he switches to cover another player, assuming that his teammates will cover the guy he just left. You can’t play team defense if your teammates don’t get it.
Okay.
I’m logging out now, and won’t be back until then.

Analysis Fail
Many people are upset because he is 23 and not 19 but they forget that most players came into the league after college until not too long ago.
There is a reason a player leaves college now at 22 and not sooner; he was never considered good enough to be drafted before that. Players leaving college that late recently have a terrible track record of becoming all-stars. Comparing 1980’s players who expected to and were expected to go to college for 3 or 4 years to a player from 2010 is ridiculous.
Can you actually break this down and provide some analysis?
It’s a pretty broad and sweeping generalization without support. On the vaguest intellectual level, I grant it seems reasonable, but some actual record would prove your point much more effectively.
PF: Love, Bjelica
PF/C: Jefferson, Pekovic
C: Darko, Hollins, Stiemsma
Its pretty loaded. Who staying and leaving? I would love to see Hollins leave and maybe trade Jefferson before trade deadline.
You consider Hollins a basketball player?
How cute :-p
Buckeyes are red, Wildcats are blue,
I wanted Evan Turner, But DeMarcus Cousins will do.
I hope to see some trades (most likely with Jefferson)
and I’ll be happy with this draft.
I'm still a Minnesotan at heart...
