I'm trying to ignor the obvious similarities here:
Both were drafted by Portland straight out of high school
Both received limited burn due to depth at their position on the Portland roster
Both had poor "per 36" numbers during their time with Portland
But I really just want to hear a few takes on this, since I am not a great basketball mind.
What are the odds that Martell Webster develops similarly to the way O'neal did with Indiana?
Martell's final year with Portland:
MPG: 24.5 PPG: 9.4 RPG: 3.3 APG: 0.8 SPG: 0.5 BPG: 0.5
Jermaine's final year with Portland:
MPG: 12.3 PPG: 3.9 RPG: 3.3 APG: 0.3 SPG: 0.2 BPG: 0.8
I realize Jermaine played half as many minutes, and they play different positions, but the production is roughly the same. Granted, Martell is a year older, but he was playing behind Brandon Roy who was the bona fide franchise player whereas O'neal played behind Wallace who was not.
Thoughts? Am I being ridiculously optimistic?
