I voted Ed Davis

He’s my “what could be” prospect this year….he’s kind of like Derrick Favors lite right now, and I see a lot of young Chris Bosh in him

by Oceanary on Jun 9, 2010 9:41 PM CDT reply actions

Paul George love

is starting to scare me. In fact, I’m going to make a Xavier Henry fanpost right now to try to sway the vote towards Xavier. If I can convince enough people, SnP, will you change the order or redo the poll? In fact I know someone brought up the very good point of Monroe going before both of these guys cuz they are splitting the vote and he should probably be retested somehow too.

Buckeyes are red, Wildcats are blue,
I wanted Evan Turner, But DeMarcus Cousins will do.

by Mplax on Jun 9, 2010 11:01 PM CDT reply actions

THANK YOU!!!

I have been voting for Henry for 6,7, and now 8, where is the love for this guy? Paul George would be a good pick for us, but only if we used a pick between 12-16 or so, I just cant see him at 8 on a draft board for any team. In fact, it sounds like some teams are even putting Babbitt and Hayward ahead of George.

If we can't get Turner

I absolutely want to get Xavier.
Finding out that the “stathead” GMs have him pegged at #6 solidifies it for me.
I’d take him anytime from #6 pick on.

How much of this Paul George hype

is good old groupthink?

He has rocketed from projected at the end of the 1st round on DX about 6-8 weeks ago to the lottery and now on this board into pick 8.

I have no opinion on him one way or the other (given my utter lack of college hoops knowledge), but it is interesting that this guy has skyrocketed in the combine and at interviews seemingly.

"I was trying to focus on breathing," Milicic said. "I was just focusing on breathing so I didn’t die."

by Auswolf on Jun 10, 2010 3:28 AM CDT reply actions

Indeed

This is why so many of us are skeptical about Cousins and Whiteside

In fact, this is basically identical to last year’s draft climb by Jonny Flynn

by Oceanary on Jun 10, 2010 3:53 AM CDT up reply actions

But Cousins at least has the statistics

and a degree of physical prowess (albeit liberally coated in chub).

George played in a smaller program (0-5 against last years top 50) that went 14-18. What has caught the eye?

"I was trying to focus on breathing," Milicic said. "I was just focusing on breathing so I didn’t die."

by Auswolf on Jun 10, 2010 6:47 AM CDT up reply actions

Are you asserting

that Cousins was projected to be picked at the end of the 1st round 6 to 8 weeks ago?

I don’t see any comparison between George and Whiteside or Cousins. Whiteside’s stock may have actually dropped since mid-season, and Cousins has always had the skill vs. head case issue to deal with. George is someone who got very little attention until recently.

by Madison Dan on Jun 10, 2010 9:29 AM CDT up reply actions

Thanks

I forgot about your handy tool. If I read that right, the average ranking of our friends in question on March 24th (about 11 weeks ago) versus June 6th are:

Cousins: 3.6 vs. 4.3
Whiteside: 11.8 vs. 15.7
George: 22 vs. 13.7

Correct

But look at where he started out

As late as December, some sites still had him ranked as low as 43. He didn’t get ranked consistently in the top 20 even until January

Like I said, rocketing up the draft boards midseason, just like Whiteside, George, and Flynn

by Oceanary on Jun 10, 2010 1:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Didn't these jumps...

coincide with great play on the court? I mean, I know it did with Cousins and Whiteside — I guess I can’t say for sure about George. Flynn was more of a workout/interview guy.

by Andy G on Jun 10, 2010 1:58 PM CDT up reply actions

It did

And I’m not saying they haven’t played great. Just that it’s a little suspicious that they all the sudden started playing great

And while Flynn did interview well, his jump was because of play as well…mainly the 6OT game where Syracuse took out UConn

by Oceanary on Jun 10, 2010 2:04 PM CDT up reply actions

by Oceanary on Jun 10, 2010 3:10 PM CDT up reply actions

They didn't all of a sudden start playing great

they were freshman. Wall and Favors were ranked higher because people projected them to translate better. They were not wrong on those two, but they were wrong on Cousins and Whiteside.

Buckeyes are red, Wildcats are blue,
I wanted Evan Turner, But DeMarcus Cousins will do.

by Mplax on Jun 10, 2010 7:21 PM CDT up reply actions

To be fair

nbadraft.net rarely updated their standings, hence them being dropped from them after a certain point because they skewed them too much

Check out my NBA Draft blog:
http://casperkid23.blogspot.com/

by Casperkid23 on Jun 10, 2010 2:12 PM CDT up reply actions

True, but they weren't the only ones ranking him low the first half of the year

I’m not saying I wouldn’t draft Cousins….I rank him 4th this year overall, which is obviously our pick. His sheer potential is staggering. I’m just wary of how he overtook other prospects who were rated high from the start and didn’t disappoint. A lot of times these kinds of scenarios turn out to be too good to be true

I am, however, saying I would NOT draft Whiteside. And agree that George is being overrated

by Oceanary on Jun 10, 2010 2:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Nope

George’s ranking was pretty stable, right up until the most recent one. So his stock improved dramatically sometime in between early May and early June. So his rise wasn’t because of how he played during actual games.

The jumps that occurred for Cousins and Whiteside happened in mid-season.

It’s legitimate for people to be nervous about all three of these guys. But the reasons are different. George doesn’t have a reputation for being a head case (unlike Cousins and Whiteside), and he measured well. His on-court play during the year didn’t change his ranking much, though.

by Madison Dan on Jun 10, 2010 2:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Even scarier

It’s pure hype around George then

by Oceanary on Jun 10, 2010 3:11 PM CDT up reply actions

I disagree

George put up the numbers to deserve a high pick, the problem is he didnt put them up in a power conference. Even though he put up good numbers people would use the usual excuse that he plays in a weak conference which didnt allow his play to improve is draft position. Now that the combine is over his stock improved because people see his numbers and they see he’s taller then players like Aminu and Lawal. Add to that the fact that he could play the 2 and it’s pretty obvious why his stock has risen.

by Gophers12 on Jun 10, 2010 3:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Caveat

One of the main draft sites (nbadraft.net?) had George in their Top 5 last summer. I checked him out back then because I figured he might be who we were looking at this summer.
Then, when the season started, he plummeted back down.
Now, he’s rising again because of the frame/skill set that intrigued last year.

Russell Westbrook and Tyreke Evans

also both rocketed up the draft boards right before the draft. For whatever that’s worth.

by Jerwol on Jun 10, 2010 10:13 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah...

I don’t think it’s a bad thing if close examination of a player makes him more — rather than less — appealing to teams. I was thinking the same thing about Westbrook.

by Andy G on Jun 10, 2010 10:35 AM CDT up reply actions

A lot...

… but he’s somewhat deserving. He’s been a steady late-lotto for most of the year in my eyes, so not much has changed.

However, Babbitt has had the same thing happen and he’s not deserving.

Henry

That’s my guy, here. Size, shooting and probably the potential for a back to the basket game. Had he played for any other team in the country last year, he would have had more consistent production.

by Andy G on Jun 10, 2010 8:31 AM CDT reply actions

Unrelated post...

but these draft pick polls are kind of the “Daily Updates” equivalents, so I’m posting it, here.

http://sports.espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/news/story?id=5264616

It’s being reported that David Geffen might buy the Clippers and lure LeBron James into joining the team. I wouldn’t be surprised if they also changed the name of the team.

I think that the Clippers are the best franchise, basketball-wise, that LeBron could join. It’s also the worst for the Wolves. He’d join such a young nucleus of talent (at least Gordon-Griffin-Jordan) that I honestly think they could rip off the first 4+-peat since the 60’s Celtics. Imagine a lineup of:

Baron Davis
Eric Gordon
LeBron James
Blake Griffin
Chris Kaman

with guys like Rasual Butler and DeAndre Jordan off the bench. They’re young, fast, strong and skilled.

Being the optimist that I (apparently) am, I hope the Wolves can put together a contender within four years or so. If LeBron is running with this crew, it probably won’t matter, much the way it didn’t really matter what KG was doing in the early-to-mid 2000’s, when Kobe and Shaq were in the way.

As an NBA fan, it’d be cool to watch this Clips team. As a fan of a different Western Conference team, I’d rather LBJ stay out East.

by Andy G on Jun 10, 2010 10:51 AM CDT reply actions

Or how about this?

Rubio
X. Henry
Lebron James
Kevin Love
Demarcus Cousins

It’s so hard to even conceive of a functional, much less competitive, Clippers team.

Yes, like Blackwater to Xe

Actually, I was going to suggest that Geffen rename the team to LA King. Would Sacramento mind? They could become the Royals again.

What team in the top-5 is most likely to trade down in the draft? Thursday June 10, 2010 1:46 Paul

Like you said last time

This is useless unless because we can’t tell if it’s his opinion or if he’s basing it on actually hearing something. I’m going with the former, in which case….. useless. He also thinks we’ll take Wes and that Wade is going to the Knicks.

When I get sad, I stop being sad and be awesome instead. True story.
