Free agent guard Luke Ridnour is close to accepting a four year, $16 million offer with Minnesota, a league source tells Y!
From Adrian Wojnarowski's Twitter page. Consider this the Ridnour open thread. Will we see Sessions or Flynn get moved by the end of the day?

Not clear to me where the cap space is coming from for this contract
unless they are waiving the TPE on the Jefferson contract and using cap space from that.
Though I suppose we just need to wait for all of the transactions to happen to see where we are cap wise. Things are moving quickly.

Frodo!
I could not be more apathetic about getting rid of Sessions for Ridnour.
Me too... if it was a straight swap.
But if we get something in return for Sessions and then replace Sessions with a comparable-level replacement, then Kahn is really maximizing value.
If we move Sessions for nothing but a salary-dump as has been reported, then it seems like a pretty plain-white-toast net of Sessions out, Ridnour in.
Let’s see what Kahn does with Sessions…
But even with a wash of skill levels
it’s a better team fit. Ridnour’s shooting and ability to play off the ball fit the triangle well. I see a Derek Fisher type of role.
I like Ridnour ok
But besides shooting, I don’t think he does anything better than Sessions, and a number of things slightly worse. Look, I’ve lost years of my life wishing he’d play over Earl Watson, but he’s not going to make the half-court work better than Ramon. If we get assets for Sessions, I’ll see, but that’s not a swap I can root for.
In the triangle Ridnour > Sessions
But that’s not a knock on Ramon, it’s just that the triangle seems to favor point guards who do nothing but hang out on the perimeter and receive passes from the pivot. If the Wolves ditched Rambis and adpoted a screen and roll offense then I’d rather have Ramon (and Flynn and Rubio). Even Ridnour isn’t the most ideal candidate for this role, but he’s at least a respectable outside shooter.
I just think there is a serious disconnect between the needs of this particular offense and the kinds of players Khan has targeted (except for Love who seems built for either the triangle or a Princeton offense).

I’d say shooting is an important element…
by WhiteManCantWrite on Jul 13, 2010 7:44 PM CDT up reply actions
are you guys really planning on using Webster as a 2?
by hoodieNation on Jul 13, 2010 2:41 PM CDT up reply actions
I think Rambis and Kahn are
It’s hard to know for sure, but it’s also hard to see where else he would get minutes. And if he doesn’t get minutes, it’s hard to explain why we have him.
I get the feeling
Kahn and Rambis don’t think of it as “playing the 2 or 3.” They think of these guys as “wing players” and consider them interchangeable on offense. Defensively – that may be a different story.
Agreed
I don’t think there is a SG and a SF, rather there are just two guys on the perimeter with a ball handler/creator type.
"Styx might be the mullet of bands."
Your position is defined by who you can guard
And I cannot see Ridnour guarding 2s. That said, that would make Flynn wholly without a position…
Exactly, old school = 1 PG, 1SG, 1SF, 1 PF and 1 begemoth center
“modern” style = 1 PG, 2 WINGS, 2 big men.
Modern style sounds like what they’re after. Problem is on defense they might have some problems with matching up
by Wim (Belgium) on Jul 13, 2010 4:37 PM CDT up reply actions
Forget old school and new school for a second
Defensive assignments aside, so far Khan seems to have drafted or traded for a lot of guys built to play in a screen and roll offense (especially the guards and wings) Love is a good triangle player, but Beasley isn’t, flynn isn’t, Sessions isn’t, Webster isn’t, Johnson might be, and Rubio certainly isn’t a triangle style point guard.
I don’t get it.
by nikolokolus on Jul 13, 2010 6:15 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
It's not "triangle-style," it's uptempo-style
And the triangle is mostly about maintaining spacing, not overdribbling, and exposing the defense’s weaknesses, which can be done with a lot of different plays. The Lakers run plenty of screen-roll action.
by pagingstanleyroberts on Jul 13, 2010 6:50 PM CDT up reply actions
that makes sense.
I tend to think of a 2 being a secondary ball handler, which is a skill Martel could use some work on. Wim is right, with the old school/modern style.

#1
BEasy at 3 doesn’t work for me. Hollins on the team doesn’t work for me.
On #1 Change love and BEasy and somehow exchange Brewer and TPE for SG, slide Webster under Wes, then it would look better.
by Breaking Ankles on Jul 13, 2010 3:14 PM CDT up reply actions
Like this?
The problem with this line up is I don’t think we’re keeping Sessions and we don’t have anyone to run the second team if Ridnour is the shooting guard.
that is
the worst team in the NBA, and it’s not even close. ridnour at the 2, are you kidding? if we want to give up 115 points a game

I'm quite surprised
we haven’t heard more about this. Something has to be lined up already, right?
"Styx might be the mullet of bands."
One would think so
Signing Ridnour seems like a potential waste of a lot of money if Sessions can’t be moved in the end. I’d think the front office wouldn’t sign Ridnour with Sessions still on the roster unless they were confident that Ramon will be moved, which usually means trade rumors are leaked out by this point…
Maybe it has been leaked
but no one cares when it’s a leak about players of Sessions’ ilk – that is, little fish, not big fish.
"Styx might be the mullet of bands."
Stein mentioned that Charlotte has interest in Sessions:
One source close to the situation said that the Bobcats will consider keeping Dampier for the short term, instead of waiving him immediately, in case another trade opportunity presents itself. Charlotte still needs a point guard and, according to sources with knowledge of the team’s thinking, has expressed interest in Minnesota’s Ramon Sessions.
Not sure of a trade that makes any sense with the Bobcats though.
Maybe...

???
What was the point of signing Luke?
If I’m not mistaken the Wolves already have Sessions and Flynn?
People are still buying into this Kahn guy?
Let me ask you a question. When the Wolves are a lottery team next year again and Rubio decides not to come over AGAIN….what will Kahn say then?
He’ll probably say..“well we always thought he would play 4 years overseas and then make the jump”
Bottom line is this. If Rubio decides to stay overseas again after this upcoming year…Kahn should be fired.
This guy has no idea what he’s doing.
DaJoka's back!!!
Has free agency been treating your team well? I understand that the Knicks had a long-term plan to clear cap space for Raymond Felton. Glad to see that worked out so well for you.
"If Rubio decides to stay overseas again after this upcoming year…Kahn should be fired"
Uhhh . . . I know you’re a top NBA mind and all, but there’s a work stoppage on the horizon. If I were Rubio, I wouldn’t plan on coming over until 2012 any way.
Is it possible that the Knicks could actually be worse this year than they were last year?
Looking forward to Isiah Thomas coming back? How about the vaunted Felton/Stoudemire PnR combination?

Rudy Gay: Feeding his family since 7/1/10
Stat comparison
Ridnour: 10.4 ppg (.478, .381, .907), 1.7 rpg, 4.0 apg in 21.5 mpg
Sessions: 8.2 ppg (.456, .067, .717), 2.6 rpg, 3.1 apg in 21.1 mpg
so
that doesn’t really explain the logic
by voiceofharlanspast on Jul 13, 2010 3:55 PM CDT up reply actions
Logic
Ridnour = 3 pt shot, creator, veteran
Sessions = more valuable to a different team
hence, a trade must be in the works.
"Styx might be the mullet of bands."
okay
so hopefully somehow this will fill the gaping hole we have at the 2 if we want to push 18 wins this year.
ridnour is much better for that corner 3 the triangle creates so often.
by voiceofharlanspast on Jul 13, 2010 4:18 PM CDT up reply actions
Exactly
Ridnour is more of a creator, which we need, and more of a veteran. Both are things our young team needs.
Sessions is a better creator
when not including this year. And it’s really not that close.

Look back a bit....
Luke could not outplay Ramon on the same team….Look at 08-09…Luke is a bad move, can’t make sense of it….I get the better 3 point percentage, but it’s not like he made a lot of them, and was a poorer defender, facilitater, scorer, and rebounder….

backup PG hitting threes keeps the lane open for cutters
as the defender can’t sag off as much. A defender will just dare Sessions to shoot. I get it if Ridnour is supposed to be the backup as backup defenders usually don’t stick with their man as tight and his shooting improves very well under those circumstances. Very lateral move but more for fit.
No one is getting Rubio's rights unless they pry them from our cold dead fingers.

ANOTHER FREAKIN' PG KAHN........Minnesota you will never be relevant in todays NBA with this GuY having power over personel.
What happens if you guys are able to talk Rubio into coming to the NBA which he would have been here last year if the Wolves did not draft him….this one move today sets in concrete that RUBIO WILL NEVER PLAY FOR MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES EVER.
On top of that he trades the teams best player and top 5 PF IN THE GAME Al Jefferson to the Utah Jazz who are in the same division with the wolves…..but someone should tell kahn that the jazz are in his division because he probably has no clue……….WOW………how in the hell did this guy get this job…
YOU ARE GOING TO GET 2 FIRST ROUND PICKS FROM A TEAM THAT IS GOING TO MAKE THE PLAYOFFS AND MORE THAN LIKELY WIN A ROUND OR TWO ANd GET A PICK IN THE 25th overall range for an all-star power forward.

No one has jumped on the Sessions to Portland for Fernandez talk thats been reported. Seems like Luke would be brought in to replace Sessions.
Maybe that is because...
…it appeared to be reported by some guy in his mother’s basement making stuff up on twitter. At least, that is how it looked to me.
Yeah - I never saw who actually "reported" that trade
I guess it kind of makes sense if you like Rudy – which I don’t unless he helps get Rubio here.
We need a backup SG
that can actually shoot. Since we’re signing Ridnour, I’d rather have Rudy on our bench than Sessions.
Ellington?
Johnson/Webster count. Since SG/SF is irrelevant in our offense.
Hollinger's take
If you add two pick-and-roll PGs, and they both are misfits in the triangle, the lesson isn’t to add ANOTHER pick-and-roll PG a year later.

Not to mention Ridnour’s not really a pick-and-roll point guard anyway….
Confused on this..
If we’re signing Ridnour, what are we trading Sessions for?
Is it a sign-and-trade or are we signing Luke and trading Sessions for something good?
Ok, this could go somewhere
They are competing with New York to keep Felton
Gerald Henderson, maybe? Seems like unequivalant talent, but Larry Brown never plays rookies anyway, so….
Felton already signed with the Knicks
Charlotte does need a point guard. They got DAmpier’s contract for Chandler. Don’t really want Henderson, myself.

Trade Sessions to Charlotte for....
….Cap space. Didn’t they just acquire Dampier’s marvelousl contract and by rescinding can get themselves under the cap?
They are still very close to the cap even if they waive Dampier
Because they took on Carroll and resigned Ty Thomas for a big number. It’s very close; I don’t have their exact number, but I don’t think they have the room.

MJ made the right move
Calderon can’t defend at all and I doubt he would play much for Larry Brown at all.
And they would have had to take on Reggie Evans
Who would have been, at best, delayed cap relief, and makes the talent aspect of the deal heavily favor the Raptors.
Reportedly Brown was indeed the one who said no, MJ just had to be the one to do the administrative work. And they got instant cap relief by dealing with Dallas instead
Kosta is in the deal
according to Doogie Wolfson’s Twitter.
DarrenWolfson RT @tribjazz Kosta Koufos is in the deal to Minnesota, his agent confirms.
Interesting...
….even that small difference in contract money could dramatically change the possibility of a TPE
JerryZgoda
Twitter:
Timberwolves taking back Kosta Koufos in Jefferson trade, but Kahn said he’ll work with agent to move him to team where he might play more
What TPE?
Since the Wolves were under the salary cap at the time of the trade, they get no exception – just the additional cap space.
http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#Q20
The Disabled Player, Bi-Annual, Mid-Level and Traded Player exceptions may be lost entirely, or the team may never receive them to begin with. This happens when their team salary is so low that when the exceptions are added to the team salary, the sum is still below the salary cap. If the team salary is below this level when the exception arises, then the team doesn’t get the exception. If the team salary ever drops below this level during the year, then any exceptions they had are lost.
Hollins will have someone to chat to during the game.

Ridnour > Sessions
In the triangle, we need a PG that can make an outside shot. Sessions really can’t. Ridnour is a little better. So, small upgrade.
Small upgrade? Maybe
We traded Al to free up salary. Is Luke REALLY that much of a bargain? I know the trading isn’t over, and I know that past history (and management) is water under the bridge (Ray Allen, Joe Smith, Brandon Roy, not to mention McHale [our version of the Scarecrow] NOT getting AT LEAST Rondo in the Garnett trade from Ainge [the flying monkey]), but I just don’t see that much change in mentality during the Glen Taylor ownership era.
The Wolves paid KG SO much on his initial contract extension that it led to a lockout, followed by a NEW collective bargaining agreement which GUARANTEED the Wolves would NEVER have the $$ to provide him with a sufficient supporting cast. So, what did they do? REPEATEDLY lock in role players to multi-year contracts for salaries which had NO relevance to their actual talents OR ability to truly improve the team over the long haul.
Just in. 4 years, 16 million. Again I ask, is this REALLY a bargain?
