There are rumblings that we have a deal in place we can do on July 8th that would free up the needed cap space for us to sign David Lee outright.
Hoopsworld apparently had a story, although the link I was provided no longer works.
So, let's pretend this is true.
What are the realistic possibilities that would make this happen?
1. Al to Dallas for Dampier's contract. Not my first choice, partially because the Mavs have annoyed me for a long time. Also, we get absolutely nothing back but cap space.
2. Al to the Clippers for our first round pick we owe them in the Jaric trade. This seems like some sort of karmic balancing act. The Clippers do it because they realize they aren't signing any marquee free agents, and they have about 5 players under contract. Plus, they have a killer 3-man rotation of Kaman, Griffin and Jefferson.
3. Al to the Wiz for Javale McGee. The Wiz are in the same "nobody loves me" boat as the Clippers. They get a bail-out post player for John Wall to go to when he needs him. Wolves get a running, defensive big man to be our fourth/fifth big (depending on what we do with Pek after we would sign Lee.)
4. Al in sign and trade for David Lee. Hard to imagine this one. Al doesn't seem like a D'Antoni guy, except the lack of defense part. Al and Amare together? Holy crap. That would be the worst defensive frontcourt in the history of the league.
What am I missing? Are there other instant cap-creating moves out there?
