Still wish the Wolves drafted Lance Stephenson?
ESPN just posted this article
Indiana Pacers rookie guard Lance Stephenson was arrested for pushing his girlfriend down a flight of stairs early Sunday morning in his native New York City, according to police.
Police say Stephenson was taken into custody Sunday following a 5 a.m. fight with the woman in Brooklyn.
The woman was treated at a hospital for injuries sustained in a fall down a flight of stairs.
The New York Daily News was the first to report the arrest.
The Pacers, who selected the 6-foot-5 guard out of Cincinnati in the second round of this year's draft, issued a statement Sunday night acknowledging Stephenson's arrest.
"We have been made aware of a situation involving Lance Stephenson early Sunday morning in Brooklyn," Pacers president Larry Bird said in a statement. "We are currently in the process of gathering information and will have further comments as we learn more facts."
Stephenson, 19, has been charged with third-degree assault and is awaiting arraignment, according to the Daily News.
The Brooklyn native was drafted with the 40th overall pick by the Pacers after one year at Cincinnati where he averaged 12 points, five rebounds and two assists.
Stephenson has had prior run-ins with the law, most notably he was charged with sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl while in high school in 2008.
Another case of domestic violence by a professional athlete. In my experience these kinds of incidents tell you a lot about what kind of career a guy will have. No matter the talent it seems like they are ticking time-bombs for career derailment. Its too bad because I was rooting for this guy a little bit.

Apparantly, after he pushed her down the stairs he slammed her head into the bottom step...... Now I just hope the guy goes to prison.....

Thanks for the post NYC Vike
Sad to hear though.
Disgusting
when a 6’5", 200-pound athletes feels the need to prove how much of a man he is by pushing his girlfriend down a staircase. Udonis Haslem is an idiot for doing what he did. Big Al was irresponsible for doing what he did. But there is no excusing what Stephenson did – if the allegations are true.

Kind of pathetic really (allegedly).

Disgusting
But if Kobe proves anything it’s that money and sport talent can make people overlook anything. The big difference is that he had proven his skills already (and had cash) so he was able to keep playing, Lance may not get that chance (and if true I rather hope he doesn’t).
Yeah I thought Kobe was going to go to Jail
Lucky for him the girl in question was nasty. The night she was with Kobe she was with 4 other guys that same night.
nothing kills your rep with a potential jury
quite like being promiscuous. Right or wrong, the masses tend to look down upon that.

Being a woman and promiscuous
doesn’t help either.

depends on the jury pool
usually the defense is able to drop anyone with personal experience in any sexual assault cases or known anyone who went through something like that. It all comes down to he said she said most of the time, so credibility is key.

Of course
Just trying to point out certain double standards when it comes to sexual promiscuity and gender.

yes unfortunately it does
also on the unfortunate front, I have had the displeasure of knowing people (a person) who were(was) falsely accused or rape for revenge purposes. Granted this was an adolescent case, which is how a large majority of those are likely to be.
Adolescents usually don’t understand the severity of those accusations and have the moral compass to prevent them from permanently destroying someone’s life. That event made me a firm believer in the not releasing names in any accusations of sexual abuse until the matter is resolved in court (in private).

Court is open to the public. And it has to be, because there’s no justice when trials are done in secret.
Sam Cassell for Marko Jaric? That's ridiculous! I would never have traded Sam Cassell for Marko Jaric.
- Sam Cassell on McHale's decisions while running the Timberwolves.
yeah
I should have said where accusations like this are kept in private and not discussed outside the court. The problem with these kinds of things are that while the justice system believes in innocent until proven guilty, society is another matter. A person is intelligent (we all hope), while people are as intellectual as a sledgehammer. People have a hard time discoursing in enough detail to come to an accurate description of what really happened and usually jump to conclusions based off of incomplete facts.

Military Tribunals
Sensitive info cannot be discussed in an open court, not US citizens, non-uniformed enemy combatants aren’t covered under Geneva Convention. Those are a few reasons….

That is just legal convenience
as is a prison in Gitmo. Or extraordinary renditions for that matter. Your assumption is that all detainees are “enemy combattants,” which has not been determined for all prisoners, especially without due process. I don’t need to read the John Yoo take on the issue.

Such cases are indeed unfortunate
and any false accusations are patently wrong.
Perhaps I was influenced by a recent report on NPR, which investigated attitudes towards rape as reflected in the justice systems in the UK, Italy and another country which I have forgotten already. Some pretty astounding conclusions and attitudes (woman in Italy could not have been raped, a judge decided, because she was wearing jeans, which are difficult to remove), which suggested that women are still not having the scales of justice tilt in their favor in cases of sexual assault.

I think it is pretty obvious that there is still not gender equality nor racial equality in any country in the world. While laws can be set up to try to allow it to happen, the people ultimately make the decisions to value it and be aware of those issues. If they choose to ignore them (which is quite common) then the issues go on indefinitely.
Personal education (does not have to be structured education like College) and rigorous discussion/debate is needed for any individual to enhance their perception. What are the odds that the majority of the world decides to invest that kind of time? This is unlikely in my opinion.

I've never understood the hate over that one
Nothing surfaced to show this was anything but consensual with the woman flipping the next day and going for the money.
I write a LOT about crimes against women and what jerks men can be, but I’ve never been convinced that anything like that happened here.
No autopsy, no foul.
Hayward was the better pick
No matter how much better Stephenson may become (which may be no better at all), you cannot have low character guys on the bench. They bring down the other players.
As Simmons (I think it was) once said, you can take a chance on a player that smokes dope or gets a DUI, but thugs and criminals (like abusing other people and stealing) are sure signs of problems ahead.
I’m glad someone else took Stephenson and not us, and I’m glad that the guys we are signing/drafting, like Hayward, Bjelica and Ridnour, are guys with high character. They can have positive influence on the others.
Tim Allen are you referring to Haslems very recent arrest
or was there an earlier time as well?. It makes it feel like there was a bit of a MJ culture in Miami.
I was referring to his recent arrest
I believe he was cited for marijuana possession, although I could be mistaken on the actual criminal charge.

haslem's car was stopped and searched
20 grams of weed and paraphenalia found in a bag in the car.
haslem’s friend “admitted” it was his, when cops asked him if
anything in car, haslem said no, he claims no knowledge.

Just another day in America
NFL,NBA,MBL and people in every day life use drugs. we only hear about these guys because they are athletes. Plus when they drive around town they attract more attention from cops because they are driving around in a fancy car.
We did take Snyder
But I’m not aware of anything happening while he was here. Mostly after he came back from China.

But now I’m all “it’s a good thing we didn’t take Stephenson”
