what is with the insane close up shots?

good god, man. I could write a dissertation about Kevin Love’s pores.

% I can’t believe Love didn’t throw a single teammate under the bus. Bastard!

I would drive 10 miles to hear fucktwats sing.

Salad

I notice lettuce between this two front teeth. Alarming…

Breaking down cognitive dissonance and group think since gasoline was cheap.

it's about time...

that Kev worked a salad or two into his diet…

Look here junior, don't you be so happy.
And for Heaven's sake, don't you be so sad.

I actually clicked the comments to post that I liked the extreme close ups

but I didn’t care for the aged film filter that was applied to the video at all. I thought the close ups were a bit Lynchian, and therefore, I approved.

We're too late for "Twin Peaks" interviews, with Al gone now.

Maybe they close din so tight on Love’s face to crop the moose head out of the frame, though.

by feral on Aug 10, 2010 10:35 AM CDT up reply actions

Sorry no link

but someone just uploaded a bunch of Twin Peaks stills to the internet. A google image search would probably pull them up.

Not for me though. Dennis Hopper is dead, and with him the Twin Peaks dream.

No autopsy, no foul.

Under the bus

Yeah I noticed that too. He seemed to stop and struggle for the right way to put things a couple of times but I think Khan could take diplomacy lessons from him.

by zebano on Aug 10, 2010 9:06 AM CDT up reply actions

I smell a big year coming for Love.

Starting to sound like a mature young adult. He’s going to put up some solid numbers next year but I’d like to see him try to fire up the fanbase KG style. He’s got the chops to sell tickets (Big Al never could).

by fanslaststand on Aug 9, 2010 8:41 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

Yeah he could get the average Minnesotan excited

It would be like them cheering on one of their fat nonathletic relatives playing in little league. Better yet he might become the next Larry Bird.

by chuckd@79 on Aug 9, 2010 9:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Come on, Chuck.

This is getting really old. Every time Love’s name comes up in any way that isn’t negative, you’re all over in responses of how Love is ‘Fat’ and that he’s white, and those are the reasons why Wolves fans like him. I’m not a huge Love fan, don’t think that he’s going to be an allstar in this league. Still, I find you insulting and crass. Break down Love’s game, argue how he doesn’t belong as a starter on this team using stats or style of play. That’s great. That’s talking basketball. Continually insulting everyone who likes Love or think that his skills match the team… and simply arguing that Love is fat and white… stop it.

The simple fact of the matter, as of right now, Kevin Love is the best player returning to this team. Beasley can be and very well could already be the best player that will play for the Wolves this year. Flynn could progress into a good player. Wes Johnson could prove to be more than just the good pro and starter that most think he’ll be… he could push for RoY and work himself into a great player. None of those things have happened yet. Love, 21, pouty, and sometimes struggling with conditioning and consistent effort, is still the best established Wolves player. He has an interesting mix of skills, and we certainly haven’t seen him put it all together yet… and it seems that he’s still developing, getting better, though I doubt we’ll ever see him develop into a complete player.

Those are the facts of the matter. Conjecture and projections are fun. It’s what we do here. The constant insulting is what has to stop, man.

+1

and, just for reference, breaking down Love’s game involves more than baseless assertions that he’s slow and can’t fill the lane.

Use stats. Use highlight (or lowlight) clips. Make an case for yourself, not just noise.

Nope, highlights are not accepted on this website

as proof of anything. They have been formally rejected by “The Canis Hoopus Stats Committee”.

by TimAllen on Aug 10, 2010 10:47 AM CDT up reply actions

I know it's a joke, but

I have to ask – how do you feel about advanced statistics in other areas of life? I keep advocating for a synthesis of both sides that involves skepticism on both the visual and statistical ends.

Scientists and economists and the like use advanced statistics in addition to keen observation. I think that this approach is completely normal in other non-sports related areas, and I don’t see how this changes in basketball. The metrics may not be the most exact at this point, but they help provide a different view that would not be otherwise contemplated, and that is always a good thing.

by nja700 on Aug 10, 2010 12:35 PM CDT up reply actions

I think in most areas of life - not all - "advanced" statistics

are tools that people use to manipulate data to fit their own conclusions and to create a sense of superiority and arrogance over others who do not use those “advanced” statistics. And you’re right, that doesn’t change in basketball.

My advanced stat could beat up your advanced stat!

by TimAllen on Aug 10, 2010 12:42 PM CDT up reply actions

And I keep hearing from you and other "stat heads" that

people are “advocating for a synthesis of both sides that involves skepticism on both the visual and statistical ends”…but I don’t think I’ve really seen that happen around here when people make arguments.

If you don’t use stats in your arguments around here, you get shot down and ridiculed. That’s just the way it is.

I accept that now. I’m not making nearly as many posts lately because I’ve been beaten down by the CH Way.

My advanced stat could beat up your advanced stat!

by TimAllen on Aug 10, 2010 12:45 PM CDT up reply actions

The person interjecting to say whole groups of other people should shut up because their opinions make you feel bad is you. Does it really surprise you that you’re getting responses?

LosDelFuego asked for an argument to be made, using any of several methods. Look, I’m a card-carrying stats proponent and it’s easy to see me doing the things he’s talking about:

I routinely go through posted highlight collections and point out the parts I like.

I also make arguments based on stats, a lot.

I’m a medical student. Doctors publish reams of statistical analyses of the efficacy of screening measures and treatment approaches, and they reconcile those with clinical experience. They test the two against each other. This is not that hard to understand.

by biggity2bit on Aug 11, 2010 9:09 AM CDT up reply actions

You really want examples?

For someone who said this:

Other than very basic stuff – points scored, rebounds, etc. – I don’t even bother with statistics. So, I can’t really misuse them if I ignore them all to begin with.

you spend a huge share of your time on the board sniffing out ways to lay into statistics of all stripes.

You jump to bashing the star chamber of supposed advanced-stat censors on completely unrelated posts. That’s what happened here. losDelFuego asked for some sort of argument, any argument, and you were off on your own private tangent, fighting the good fight.

Do we really need to go looking for you jumping on people who cite PER, or something as basic as a per-minute stat, dismissively? Passive aggressively? Look at your sig line.

by feral on Aug 11, 2010 9:39 AM CDT up reply actions

So, what you're effective saying is that

if I want to question people’s arguments and the tools that they use to make those arguments, I’m telling people to “shut up”. Interesting. I guess that says more about you and your insecurities than it does about me.

But as I’ve said before, I’m trying to stop attacking advanced stats. Because people like you will get offended and call me a bad person. Then I’ll have to tell my mother that she did a bad job raising me because I disparaged PER to some online CH poster.

Protect that shield, homie.

I don’t want to debate this point anymore. That’s my bad for bringing it up. I’m just going to go sit in the corner again and wear my “STUPID” hat.

by TimAllen on Aug 10, 2010 1:52 PM CDT up reply actions

You are anything but stupid

I respect your posts as intelligent, and think you have shown many worthwhile insights. You get too much crap for ignoring advanced stats, and a lot of people depend on them too much. You rightly question them for that. I do think that both sides are a little too strong and generalized in their arguments, though.

I’m not a major stats proponent. I rarely cite them in arguments, and I’m not that up on the latest info. I do value them as another source of valuable information that informs my views and my arguments. I’m simply saying that they’re something you can trust if you take them with the right size grain of salt. I’m not intending to demand or berate you, I just recommend that you continue to keep an open mind on what is valuable information and what is not.

by nja700 on Aug 10, 2010 6:27 PM CDT up reply actions

...

I know that I recently scoffed at your use of highlight videos to defend a point, and I stand by the perspective. I think that we should only use quantifiables when analyzing, arguing, and making predictions, and I try to be open about that. I don’t represent all of the stat-friendly folks however. I’m sure there are some that truly draw from both, and some that say they like both, but really only respect stats.

I hope I’m not a dick… Yours is not a voice the CH community should want stifled.

I was just joking man

HA HA HA !!!!. and I insult people I am sorry. I add the extra stuff for fun!!! I hope you did not think I was serious.

by chuckd@79 on Aug 10, 2010 3:57 PM CDT up reply actions

I think you are joking, Chuck

But I think it is getting a bit old myself too. Nobody writes things like “Wes Johnson is (fill in attribute or fan reaction here) because he is black.” That would not be cool. I think that it has been proven a few times that these jokes are not well received by the crowd. To continue to write it off as not being serious, and that you are just joking, and you are sorry if you insult people, only to then write the very same thing later in the day, or the next day, is a move that I do not think is really working anymore. I like your analysis, and I understand that you are not a big fan of Kevin Love or his game. But please, I do not root for Kevin Love because he is white, and those who do root for him based on his race do not deserve our respect anyway. I am getting sick of his race being brought up. Do people still talk about black quarterbacks? I do not. An athlete is an athlete, and should be judged by his athleticism, skills, production, etc.

by Madsen's 3-Point Barrage on Aug 10, 2010 11:08 PM CDT up reply actions

I never said that I was not fan of Klove game

I just say he does not fit for a running team. If we played a different style then I would have no problems with love at the 4. I used the larry bird stuff because of the amount of fandom that love receives is not based in reality. When you have people saying that he is better than Bosh, Melo and other all star players it gets too much. Also If you paid any attention to my other comments I said the same thing about DMC where I said he is not going to be be Shaq. I think you are quick to point out something that is not there. You have the problem of thinking I don’t like him because he is white.

Quick to point out something that is not there

Like all those people saying Love is better than Bosh and Melo?

by Dib432 on Aug 12, 2010 12:09 AM CDT up reply actions

I do not think you do not like him based on his race

I respect your opinion too much to think that way, chuckd. You are a VERY intelligent person, your college major and many posts i have read of yours back that up. I think very highly of your intellect. I agree that DMC will not be Shaq, although if I were Twolves GM i think I would have drafted Cousins. To be Shaq is to be something incredibly rare in NBA history…that is to say, only Shaq and Wilt have been that player. So big, so athletic as to not be handled.

I feel you are wrong on Love with regards to a running team. Pat Riley said “rebounds equal rings” or a very close facsimile of that comment, and he was the coach of the vintage Showtime Lakers. Rambis knows this. Do not discount his input. Love is the NBA’s best rebounder, and its best outlet passer. That is a very valuable asset on a running team.

This interview really impressed me. He seems determined to turn this team around.

by Klomp on Aug 9, 2010 9:08 PM CDT reply actions

What continues to impress me

is his knowledge of everything that’s happened. He knows his teammates, he sounds as though he’s actually familiar with their games (not necessarily in this interview, but in others he sounds like he’s already watched film on them), and he knows who went where and for how long and how much, and who’s had success or not etc etc. He just seems really plugged in to everything, and I think he’s spot on when he keeps coming back to how young this team is and how the next step is to just play together and play together some more. At this point we can’t learn anything more about this team until they just start playing together and seeing what happens. Which brings me to the last thing that he’s said before about this team – it is a good young core, a good young core. This team has actual talent and upside beyond Love, and I think he recognizes that. It all depends now on what happens on the court and if they can gel together and develop some rhythm and chemistry. But this could end up being a pretty promising and talented team.

We're giving Wolves players extra credit for knowing the team's roster,

and it seems reasonable enough. Catch that moment from Love here:

“It’s just going to take us, uh, growing together, us playing together, and uh, us getting that chemistry to really, uh, you know, make something happen, but eventually we’re gonna have to stick with the players we have and grow from there.

If this roster turns over again, Love’s checking out. You can just feel it.
