Exhibition vs Lakers at the O2 in London
Hello there fellow CHers, the season is almost upon us and I am getting quite excited about what we are in store for this season. I don't think anyone really REALLY knows what to expect from the current roster.
But I was wondering if any of you guys were coming across the pond to see our beloved pups for the first time? Seeing as I've been a Wolves fan for about 15 years now and I live in England I thought it would be rude not to go.
I went to the last one and it was heart wrenching watching KG in another uniform but that's life I suppose.
Also what is your take on holding these games overseas?
Obviously these are just exhibition games but in March the Nets and Raptors play a couple of regular season games over here too.
The Premier League were discussing taking our football, sorry, soccer teams abroad to play league games and there was uproar by everyone from fans to the media about the suggestion but the NFL has managed it for the last few years and they didn't complain too much.
How would you guys feel about the Wolves playing a couple of regular season games in England or anywhere else for that matter? What was the feeling towards the Japan games back in 1998 (I think? I have them on DVD, I should watch them again cause KG was awesome in those games!)
Also anyone who is coming over who wants to meet up for a drink at the game let me know!

I think its an interesting idea
to play games abroad, but frankly I don’t see the advantages outweighing the costs. Teams have to travel long distances in the middle of a strenuous season throwing off their time schedules. Which team loses the home game? etc… and the advantages are increased exposure? not really sure what that brings to individual teams other than maybe, maybe minor increases in revenue.
That being said I would love to attend an EPL game in the US, but I think people like me (and like you) are in the minority in our respective countries even though I’d assume the few games played in other countries would sell out
The only two times that make sense
would be the first couple of games before the schedules get all messed up or right before the All-Star Break. Maybe just at the break. Seems kind of pointless with the internet and all.

on a sidenote
if Stern really wants an NBA presence in Europe, then why don’t we work a deal with some euroleague champions to have a playoff series with our champion vs their every year if we can align the seasons?

I don't like that idea
The NBA needs to remain superior in image to other leagues. If NBA squads start playing Euro teams on a regular basis and if an American team lost, that would threaten the supremacy of the NBA as the best league in the world. We shouldn’t lower ourselves to that level.
But in a 5 or 7 game series, how often would the NBA champ lose? I’d guess almost never. I can’t imagine Barca or Pananthinaikos taking out the Lakers in a real series. Maybe in a one off game, but after a few sweeps, it’d probably reinforce the NBA’s superiority. Unless teams didn’t take it seriously, then all bets are off.

Hmmm, it’s on a Monday, so I’ll have to wait and see what my class schedule is for Tuesday, but I might be able to. I’m in Dublin right now, but know some folks in London who I could probably stay with if I jetted over for a couple days. That’d be a lot of fun and I am absolutely going to miss watching the NBA over here. Do you know of any good (free) places online to watch games? ESPN3 doesn’t work over here and I’m hoping to see at least a few games from this side of the Atlantic.

I'll be there and Paris
It so happens the Wolves tour coincides with my business travel. Basketball ranks number 5 in popularity in the UK.

Doesn’t this just make us the Washington Generals?

Are we the Washington Generals?
Aren’t they normally winning almost every game in the second half only to blow the lead? Last year we didn’t have many leads to blow

Good idea.
I think overseas exhibition and even early regular season games are a great idea. Its not about the revenue at those games its about brand recognition and catching fans from other nations. As they continue to do that I can see bringing the NBA more into the European market- like NBA Europe or something. Or maybe better cooperation with European leagues.
I am considering the idea of pursuing a position in London, but won’t be there in time for the game. By the way, does anyone out there know how easy it is to get Twins, Vikings, and ’Wolves games? I assume there is some sort of satellite service that carries the necessary channels?
be very careful over there
the copyright folks are much stronger in the UK and it might not be safe to try to watch illegal feeds like at atdhe.net or JustinTV. Losing your broadband for watching a game is a pretty stiff penalty.
No autopsy, no foul.
The tv overbred isn't too bad.
Sky Sports have great NFL coverage and we have espn America now so you can get your MLB, NHL and NBA fix but Minnesota specific is not likely. The Vikings and twins will probably get more coverage but I’m gonna invest in an NBA tv broadband pass which will cost about £65 I think or about $80. So who’s actually going to the game then?
