Free Agent Shooting Guards - Shannon Brown?

Looking at this season, I think that most fans can agree that in an ideal world, David Kahn would make a great trade so that the Wolves would balance out their roster. In that perfect world he would trade a combination of Webster, Darko and Jonny Flynn's ghost for a young shooting guard and center who would become all stars. Sadly, we don't live in NBA 2K11.

In the real world, I just don't see any of the top centers(Gasol, Nene, Jordan) even giving the Wolves a passing glance in free agency, and I would be really surprised if Kahn can pull off a trade that will really balance out the roster. Honestly, I am excited to see what Adelman can do. I wonder how much he will really play Randolph and Love at the 5.

I think it is much more realistic that the Wolves will try to use their limited cap space on a shooting guard. Here are my top picks. Let me know what you think in the comments.

Star-divide

1. Arron Afflalo - My #1 choice for many reasons. He's a young two-way player who can shoot the 3, and also be counted on to guard the other teams best wing. From what I've seen and read, he looks like a team player who could potentially develop into a team leader. The fact that he is a restricted free agent throws a big wrench in things, but I'd love to see him in a Wolves jersey.

2. Shannon Brown - My #2 choice, and a name that I haven't heard mentioned for the Wolves. He's entering his prime, is athletic as hell, and has improved his game quite a bit over the past years. He has the ability to space the floor by hitting 3's, can take it to the rim, and I'd love to see a couple seasons worth of alley-oops from Rubio to him. To me, he's the kind of guy the Wolves should target. Does anyone have any ideas which teams he has been linked to?

3. Brandon Roy - If Portland decides to use their amnesty option on him, I wouldn't mind seeing the Wolves try to pick him up for 20 - 25 minutes a game.

4. Marcus Thorton - Young, athletic, and can fill it up. Questionable defense, but has a ton of upside.

Any other ideas?

Do I have to pick from one of those 4?

Afflalo – Gives us the lowest scoring backcourt of all-time with Ricky Rubio
Brown – Not sure what the fuss is about him
Roy – Unless he accepts his new role, and less than $4 million per season, no thanks
Thornton – Overrated

I would sign Wesley Johnson. Yes, I know he’s already signed to the Wolves, but I think he’s worthy of a 2nd contract.

When you are a current/former Laker/Knick, you are over, over, over covered in the endless sea of big market media.

Would anyone know who Luke Walton was if he was perpetually injured on the Grizzlies roster?

could you

elaborate on Thornton, please?

I’d argue that he’s pretty underrated actually, among the general public at least.

by tanat-0s on Dec 1, 2011 9:02 AM CST up reply actions

Underrated in his awfulness, mabye

28 years old at the end of his rookie deal, career ws/48 of .035, doesn’t do anything well off the ball, terrible beyond the arc, negative WARP, lets opponents score more than they do on average, and he’s 28 headed into his 2nd contract.

by Stop-n-Pop on Dec 1, 2011 9:16 AM CST up reply actions

No. Your opinion of Al Thornton is correct.

I’m amazed the Clippers took him in the 1st round since Dunleavy and Olshey did so well in the draft generally. I never understood Al Thornton love, and that is coming from a guy who was not stats oriented in any way in 2007.

by twinstalker on Dec 1, 2011 11:12 AM CST up reply actions

Those are Al Thornton's numbers, not Marcus's

That said, Marcus isn’t great off the ball. If we’re not looking for a shooting guard to be the focal point of the offense, I’d rather take Shannon Brown for his defense and ball handling.

by McCleak on Dec 1, 2011 9:34 AM CST up reply actions

Your mistaking Al for Marcus is funny

but Marcus Thornton is actually quite good, likely to still be improving and far far better than any option the Wovles’ have at the SG. I’m pretty sure he’s still constrained by the Arenas Rule so there is an upper bound on what the Wolves can pay him over the next two years and its right in line with what they are already paying Wes (to stink) and Webster (to not stink but just be hurt and not actually good) and Beasley (to do little more than score inefficiently in volume)

FWIW, it befuddles me how a team can value OJ Mayo with the #3 pick in one draft and then pass on acquiring an eerily similar prospect 4 or 5 times in the next draft.

by Ailuridae on Dec 1, 2011 2:42 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

My first impression of Al

was at a late-season game in his rookie year, at a time when he was putting together some high-scoring games on a typical Clipper team. There was some debate on The Rake at that time about whether the Wolves should have taken him over Corey Brewer (it turns out either choice was pretty awful).

What I remember was a possession where he was on the opposite wing when the Clips were running a basic two-man game, feeding the post, kicking it back out, etc. Al was standing there with his hands on his hips. I don’t know how much that really matters—I doubt Kaman or whoever it was was going to fire a cross-court pass to him, but that little bit of body language said a lot about him, to me. That same year (I think) I remember Fat Antoine Walker spending some possessions with his hands on his knees, but I could at least understand what was happening there. It happens to many of us during pickup games. We’re out of shape. Thornton was just disinterested, and it was his rookie year for Christ’s sake.

by Andy G on Dec 1, 2011 2:55 PM CST up reply actions

I couldnt have said it better TA

I dont see the hype around Thornton, playing on awful teams shooting 20 times a game and not at a high percentage.

With

the new CBA, if Portland uses the amnesty on Roy we only pay whatever we offer him. Portland picks up the rest of the tab of what they owe him for this season.
Plus, he does not have the right to refuse.

So basically, amnestied players go to the highest bidder.
I don’t know who else will be in the market (probably a lot of teams) but he will probably be had for < 4mil for sure..

Brown's fine

He’s an average to above average defender, takes care of the ball, and has is slightly below average as a shooter. Also, he’s improved every year as a player if you accept that his third year jump was sort of a weird single season thing.

Because I would assume Beasley is looking at this season as

“I need to have a big role, play a lot of minutes, and put up numbers for my next contract.”

As a result, he may not react well if Adelman thinks Williams is outplaying him and starts trying to reduce Beasley’s minutes/role.

I don’t know either person obviously. Just a possible and somewhat likely (IMO) danger.

Summary of presser:

Nothing this man ever says matters. Windows of opportunity, significant fine tuning, whatever. He could have given the conference in pig latin and it would have meant as much. Here’s hoping that after 3 drafts with a silly amount of draft picks (the last one being used to raise money for a coaching buyout), lots of opportunities to move big salaries, and a whole lot of other chances to make this team better, that him pretending to have an actual plan will have something to back it up: namely, Rubio and D-Will being the bee’s knees and Adelman being a real coach. Should he get credit for this if it pans out? Sure, but it will mean about as much as any of his prior public statements…which, raise your hand if you think meant anything at all.

The team has a really good young player. It has sucked enough to be lucky enough to draft a guy that could be a 2nd good young player. It was fortunate enough to draft a guy that could be a 3rd good young player. It found a good coach. None of this was planned and my only hope is that Kahn believes in the rigidity of his “plan” as much as I do and that he will do his best to roll with the punches with a roster that is where it is at despite his best efforts to make it otherwise.

Let’s just everybody pretend like he never happened. He’ll continue to stand there, and he may even do some things every now and then, but nothing he has ever said ever really mattered and the only thing that will change is that the grownups finally decided to give him some pro tips on how to handle the times he’s let out.

Getting back to Afflalo

Afflalo started his career as a 22 year old rookie with a 49pct TS% (the same as Wes) and Wes missed one year of college. Wes looks to be a slightly better defender. But, With Alderman as coach I believe he has the chance to improve as much as Afflalo has. In fact, a slightly better defensive Affalo might be what we can expect of Wes for a ceiling. Not too bad, but will it be good enough?

Wesley Johnson should be given another year to improve, especially under Adelman, before we assume he’s bench material. by Vlade on Dec 1, 2011 2:36 PM CST reply actions

If Adelman can keep Darko from shooting,

I won’t complain about Darko starting. Too much.

by Madison Dan on Dec 1, 2011 2:40 PM CST up reply actions

I will

It’s completely inexplicable. The guy is a terrible player.

The Wolves are like the worst meal you've ever had--terrible while you're eating it and even worse later.

by Eric in Madison on Dec 1, 2011 2:42 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, he is.

But if we could get all of his shot blocking and none of his shooting, he’d be less terrible.

by Madison Dan on Dec 1, 2011 2:50 PM CST up reply actions

I should add

that I don’t think this will ever happen. I think he’s a cancer and should be cut. But in theory…

by Madison Dan on Dec 1, 2011 2:54 PM CST up reply actions

Then I shouldn't complain

about Darko’s lack of stamina?

Did I miss

when Brandon Roy went from MVP material to secondhand goods?

by y2jayjk on Dec 1, 2011 3:15 PM CST reply actions

Apparently you did

it happened around the time his knees went from functional to…not.

The Wolves are like the worst meal you've ever had--terrible while you're eating it and even worse later.

by Eric in Madison on Dec 1, 2011 3:21 PM CST up reply actions

That's sad

So we shouldn’t feel bad about trading him on Draft Day anymore?

by y2jayjk on Dec 1, 2011 3:25 PM CST up reply actions

That still sucked

He was a brilliant player for several years. More value than Foye will ever have.

The Wolves are like the worst meal you've ever had--terrible while you're eating it and even worse later.

by Eric in Madison on Dec 1, 2011 3:33 PM CST up reply actions

No comparison

Brandon has been the face of the Blazers since he entered the NBA. A selfless player and all around nice person.

Foye may be some of that, but he at best was the pimple on the face of the Wolves franchise.

That said, if Brandon was anything of his former self, they Blazers would move mountains to keep him.

He did have a pretty nice game against Dallas in the playoffs last year.

So he might have some left in the tank, but probably not long term.

We need to ask ourselves

Is a few seasons of very good basketball better than a bunch of seasons of below average basketball?

by Waucckhewww on Dec 1, 2011 3:36 PM CST up reply actions

I'll rephrase:

Is a few seasons of very good basketball better than zero basketball of any worth?

by LoveTo on Dec 1, 2011 4:00 PM CST up reply actions

There *might* be a banner hanging at Target Center

had we kept Roy. I have to believe the requisite “veterans seeking a title shot” would have joined forced with B-Roy and KG, up here, to put us in real position.

And really, with this new CBA we could have just amnestied out of Roy as Portland will do.

by Andy G on Dec 1, 2011 3:39 PM CST up reply actions

There already is a banner hanging at Target Center

it says, “2011 WNBA Champions.”

If they never play NBA basketball again, then I'll never watch it again.

by PoorDick on Dec 1, 2011 3:40 PM CST up reply actions

Is there?

I figured they’d wait to raise it at a Lynx game, next season.

by Andy G on Dec 1, 2011 3:42 PM CST up reply actions

I don't let "truth"

affect my pithy comments.

That would be Shannon Brown.

Now that Kahn has emerged from his hole

So. now that Kahn has emerged from his hole, does that mean we will have six more weeks of cold weather or that we will continue to finish last in the NBA until his contract is exhausted?

For the past two seasons, Kahn has come away saying the Wolves needed a veteran shooter who can confidentially take the final shot in the closing seconds. Will this season make the third season?

Under Adelman's corner offense

Dunleavy would be a good fit but you don’t want him to be a starter.

by wayno on Dec 1, 2011 11:39 PM CST reply actions

With all the statistians on this board

I would have thought someone would have run these free agents through the black box to determine who is best statistically.

Alas, it must be pre-season for everyone.

Bad news for Afflalo lovers

According to Marc Stein

“Heard it from handful of GMs over past 2 days: FA w/most suitors after top bigs (Nene/Chandler/MGasol) is DEN restricted FA Arron Afflalo”

“Bulls and Lakers lust after Afflalo, I’m told, but it’ll take a cap-room team to assemble an offer good enough to get him out of Denver”

I don’t think Minnesota is going to be Afflalo’s top choice if the Bulls and Lakers are “lusting” after him

JonnyRotten Flynn, that is

by JonnyRotten on Dec 2, 2011 12:53 PM CST reply actions

He's an RFA though

which means he’ll go with the highest bidder, and almost certainly get matched by Denver. I don’t see why LA or Chicago would even bring his name up, because he’ll get more than the MLE.

by BeasleBong on Dec 2, 2011 1:31 PM CST up reply actions

Well

The one benefit under the new CBA is teams only get three days to match, so maybe restricted free agents will get more offers as under the old system teams had wait 7 days in limbo watching other free agents sign while be handicapped by an outstanding offer sheet.

Derrick Williams was going to Bust...but then he was selected by the Timberwolves!
