Marc Gasol to Houston? (with poll!)

I was going to make this into a Fan Shot, but I didn't think that section had the capacity to handle the traffic that this story might generate.

Houston is apparently pursuing a sign-and-trade with Memphis for the privilege of offering Marc Gasol 4 years at $55 million. Here's a recent review of the tubbier Gasol from the New York Times

Star-divide

Memphis still could match, but at that price, I think the guy is worth it, especially for the Wolves, and especially for the Wolves with Ricky Rubio. What do you think?

Way too much, in my opinion

If that's the money it takes, I would actually prefer the S&T variation.

Clearing the money for the talent we’d give would be a plus.

It’s a lot. He’s a ridiculously efficient big who plays on both ends of the floor, though.

I wonder what sort of bargain rate we could get on Rudy Fernandez? We already ignored him in the draft, and Dallas picked him up for a song, but now they’re apparently shopping him. A true two, and obviously there’s the Rubio thing. (But then there are also the goggles.)

"Opinion ...a confession."

My preference for the 2 goes

1. Martin
2. Rudy
3. Crawford

If they never play NBA basketball again, then I'll never watch it again.

Deal reported to be 4 years $55 Million. While Max for a player of his service level, it’s not a Rudy Gay or Joe Johnson contract. I would probably take him on the Wolves for that money.

Derrick Williams was going to Bust...but then he was selected by the Timberwolves!

by Ebomb on Dec 11, 2011 2:49 PM CST reply actions

I can't imagine that Memphis wouldn't match that

Is that really the maximum he can be offered?

Why would Memphis do a sign and trade? What could Houston possibly offer them that would better than signing Gasol?

The Wolves are like the worst meal you've ever had--terrible while you're eating it and even worse later.

Memphis also needs to shed salary in this case.

Hence, the reason they’re shopping Mayo today.

by foobee on Dec 11, 2011 2:53 PM CST reply actions

But aren't they taking back

Josh McRoberts in the Mayo deal?

If they never play NBA basketball again, then I'll never watch it again.

It would be

a sign-and-trade.

Corozza Insider article on FA Sleepers profiles:

1. Michael Redd as a vet minimum contract.
2. Krylo Fesenko for $1-2M per

Both bench guys and I expect to be mocked. But I’d go for Redd to replace Ellington (faint praise, I know) in the 10 mpg SG role. And Fesenko is statistically the 2nd-best defensive player in the NBA last year. 82games says The Jazz allowed 10 ppg less with him on the floor last year. He’s awful offensively, but give me a stud defensive center to rotate in for 10 mpg on this team for sure… Especially if you start Love at center for 35 or so mpg.

by foobee on Dec 11, 2011 3:13 PM CST reply actions

Before we get Redd

I would like to go after Martin and Crawford

Not worth it

I don’t see any of these guys fitting in also allow Adelman sometime with the current roster. Scrapping the barrel for 12 man types is going to help us

by tallandthicks on Dec 11, 2011 4:05 PM CST up reply actions

I was saying Redd is better than nothing

He would at least be a vet type who isn’t as hungry for PT (you would hope)

Devean George

might have that job no need for a fight. i think Lee might get some burn though

by tallandthicks on Dec 11, 2011 6:05 PM CST up reply actions

double edged sword

if gasol signs that he can be stuck on a middling team which 2 best players were told, you are not good enough to be here, and now have to get back to work. even at 100 percent, that team’s ceilling is the western conference semis.

same for memphis, if they don’t match they lose all they got last year just like that. it’s an expensive offer sheet, but i would match that in an instant. specially now that all the quality big men are signing elsewhere (maybe you can still get someone like dalembert, but it’s still a noticeable drop-off)

by kuntraidor on Dec 11, 2011 3:26 PM CST reply actions

I think Memphis has to match, but...

That’s some huge cash to Gay, Randolph, Conley and Gasol.

by foobee on Dec 11, 2011 3:58 PM CST up reply actions

Yep

Rockets suck period with or without Gasol but Memphis if they don’t match will suck too IMO he’s good but not worth max deal same with Nene, Dalembert

Wolves don’t need anymore players

by tallandthicks on Dec 11, 2011 3:59 PM CST up reply actions

I know they're (theoretically ;) a rival,

but I want the Grizz to stick together. Get rid of Mayo, fine. (And I know they have to make finance-related decisions). That said, I’m not sure how I feel w/r/t the poll question.

by PDGirl on Dec 11, 2011 4:42 PM CST reply actions

I'll add

an “abstain” button.

If they never play NBA basketball again, then I'll never watch it again.

by PoorDick on Dec 11, 2011 5:02 PM CST up reply actions

Or is this making up for the loss of Pau with the killing of that trade?

by Larsn on Dec 11, 2011 5:30 PM CST up reply actions

If they can't get Pau or Marc,

they can always go after their younger brother Scott Gasol.

If they never play NBA basketball again, then I'll never watch it again.

by PoorDick on Dec 11, 2011 5:41 PM CST up reply actions

i don't know if that's a joke

but they do have a younger brother called adrián gasol who was pretty good before he blew his knee at 15 (he is i think 18 now), he is 6’10 and still growing (read somewhere he could go to 7’3 but the injury may have changed that prediction somewhat).

by kuntraidor on Dec 11, 2011 5:58 PM CST up reply actions

I get why we're linked with centers...

But I definitely don’t want us to sign one. Our best lineup involves Love at Center. That puts MicRick Beas-liams at the 4 and Wes at the 3, where they belong. If we could find a good, slashing 2 to go with that, we’d be in good shape.

And Love’s defense would be best served by playing man down low on other centers.

"I'm gonna make you cry...I'm gonna make you cry and dip my cookie in your tears!!!"

by mutleyil on Dec 11, 2011 7:24 PM CST reply actions

hahaha

that MicRick Beasliams was a BEAST in college. Hopefully it translates to the big show.

Rubio + DWilliams + Adelman = suck it Clippergeddon

by nodnarb on Dec 11, 2011 7:42 PM CST up reply actions

True on Love's defense

I think he’s more at a disadvantage against quickness than he is against girth… so defensively, I actually like him playing opposing centers more than PFs. For the rare match-up against a truck centers, you’ve got Darko. For the rare match-up against high-flyer centers, you’ve got AR. Against everybody else, Love will be passably acceptable.

by foobee on Dec 11, 2011 8:25 PM CST up reply actions

Starting at center ---KEVIN LOOOOVE!

I hope all this time in the middle doesn’t have Kevin singing “There’s California bloodlines in my heart, there’s a California heartbeat in my soul.” (Dave Alvin) Did he lose 20 pounds because he was figuring on playing more center?

I’m always up all night, and coupled with being the world’s slowest typist (I lost to a blind hotshot in a wheel chair who had to hold a stick between his lips,) I think I might shoot for the very last posting on every shot/post.
