Last Night Jonny Flynn Played Basketball for Someone Besides the Minnesota Timberwolves!
For many long-suffering and short-suffering Timberwolves fans, a truly miraculous event occurred last night. Jonny Flynn played in a regulation NBA game while NOT wearing a Timberwolves jersey!
True, his 2 assists, 2 turnovers, -3 +/- and oh-for-everything-else represent an improvement in performance over what we came to expect from young Jonny.
But the real value in this great night comes from a visit to Basketball Reference, specifically the page relating to the 2009 NBA Draft. It was the night a giddy David Kahn landed Jonny Flynn of Syracuse, with the promise of on-court talent and off-court charisma that would quickly win the hearts and dollars of Timberwolves fans old and new.
Of course, the page at Basketball-Reference tells a different story. You see the column on the far right? The one that says "WS/48"? Click on that header, so that it sorts down from the highest to the lowest number. Now look near the bottom and see where Jonny Flynn stands. Then scroll your eyes up the list, and see alllllll the players picked after Jonny Flynn who have already had much more productive NBA careers, and many of whom will likely go on to do achieve even greater feats long after Jonny is out of the league.
But when you get to the top of this illustrious list, what do you see? Ricky Rubio! For the time being, our Spanish Unicorn has saved the 2009 draft, David Kahn's job, and any shred of hope that the Wolves might be relevant again!
Savor this moment deeply and quickly, because we never know how badly Rubio might fall after the Miami game.
SnP HERE/EDIT: Link to the 09 Draft fixed.

I love working nights
your link to BR is kicking back to the box score, so here’s you go:

I kinda detest the coulda shoulda woulda argument when it comes to drafting because everyone remembers their opinions so much better in hindsight. However, in terms of this draft, the concensus pick was easily Stephen Curry. And I remember thinking why was Ty Lawson falling so far when he compared well to the other points? Then we took him and I was happy. Then we traded him and I was sad. He had 25 points and 8 steals tonight.
We coulda walked away from that draft with Rubio, Curry and Lawson. And we should have. And to prove it, http://www.canishoopus.com/2009/6/24/923296/final-draft-boards

All the Jonny hate and Curry love, but
as you cited, virtually no mention of a guard we did pick (and dealt) who has become close to a star. Lawson may have a better career than Curry.

Yes,
he’s been outstanding—he might have a better supporting cast, or at least better “team” than Curry, but Lawson’s probably even better suited to be an actual point guard than Curry is.

That part makes me the most upset
because, with no hindsight, I thought that 18 would be a great place to pick a PG in that draft. I didn’t think we’d get Lawson, but someone decent was going to be there. We should have done something else with 6, even if it wasn’t picking Curry.
We just saw Maynor against OKC, come to that.
He’s still so danged slight, is the thing about him. But Eric Maynor was almost a lock to be there at 18 that year.
"Opinion ...a confession."
Yup, I liked Maynor a lot that year.
Too much, in hindsight, but he would have been a good pick at 18.
Gerald Henderson 6
Maynor/Lawson/
did Holiday last that long?
Man, Henderson/Holiday would have been unbelievable
I don't know what an art house is, I don't know what goes on in an art house, I have never been in an art house, and I can't imagine it's any place I ever want to be.
I didn't like Henderson that much,
but I still thought at the time that we could have traded down from 6 to get Henderson + something else and at least get someone at a position of need.
He seemed
to be a different version of Wayne Ellington. But that was an overestimation of Wayne Ellington on my part.

Wayne hasn't been good
but I thought he was a good pick at the time. He was a great college shooter and we needed a shooter. Seemed like a no-brainer.
Most of
the Timberwolves draft picks have been no-brainers.

I actually didn't like him either at the time
but he’s had two years of just sub-15 PER, and I believe at the end of last year he really had a strong stretch of games.
I’ve been surprised by Henderson and would have provided us with tough-nails defense and athleticism at the two.
Guy just wasn’t/isn’t a great shooter.
I like the trade down aspect.

I guess his rookie season was pretty bad

2nd year was a 13.2 PER and a 2.4 WS….which would have been our best SG in 2010-11

Didn't like DeRozan then
and he hasn’t done much to change my mind. But still, he would have made more sense than Flynn.

I like DeRozan enough
problem is any of these players outside of Curry would have gotten their teeth kicked in by Rambis

i'm not a huge DeRozan fan
but he’s better than Wes Johnson and Flynn combined.
Hollinger
was fairly aggressively pro-Lawson running up to the draft
Actually the picks that hurt the most
Are the ones that seem pretty freakin’ obvious at the time. Guys like Curry, Lawson and Eric Gorden, are all ballers. Watch them for 5 minutes and you know that there will always be a place for them in the NBA.
But the draft road is littered with busts. Every GM has several busts on their resume.
As was Ed Weiland
Right after the draft, he made an analogy to the ’83 quarterback class. We were in position to draft Elway, Kelly, and Marino! Could have been a franchise-changing draft.
That said, I was really hoping for Curry and Lawson at 5 and 6. That was not knowing that Rubio would unexpectedly fall to #5 or that Lawson would fall to #18.
A rational take on our regret over the 2009 draft
might be, “So what? You got Rubio—what’s the problem?”. Which—yeah. But all the time and money wasted spent on Jonny Flynn, Ramon Sessions, Luke Ridnour, Bassy, and now Barea could have been used to add a bona fide 2,3, or 5.

we did pretty good.

In 4 minutes, with two boards.
For the time he spent out there, Hasheem Thabeet really filled that line! He’s already equalled the minutes Adelman gave him in Houston last year!
McHale must be using the cardboard stand-up Rasho used to dunk over in practice.
"Opinion ...a confession."
Technology has advanced
far beyond the cardboard stand-up:

One of the Worst Nights in Franchise History
Was that draft night. No question.
They say it's always darkest just before dawn and man, was it dark last year. Come to think of it, I'm not needing my sunglasses this year, either.
C'mon guys. There's always next year to look forward to
Oh, shit!
"I don't think I've ever seen a group that is as good at turning the ball over as this one." Rick Adelman
Actually the one huge positive we can take from that draft
Is Rubio is here without any significant competition at PG. If Curry or Lawson are here does he even come over? Does he even play? Do I get the chance to get lost in Rubio’s puppy dog eyes?
It's never a huge positive..
..to have bad players instead of good.
Hey don't burst my bubble man
It’s all warm and cozy in here. ;-)
the night we watched Orlando draft Shaq
with a pick that should have/could have been ours would give it a run for the money

the difference
in the experience between the Orlando/Miami franchises and the Minnesota/Charlotte teams (all expansion teams during the same time) couldn’t be farther apart.
(and lest anyone feel bad for the Magic for having Shaq leave and Dwight getting out of town, they had Shaq, Dwight, Penny, McGrady, Hill and the most ludicrous lottery luck of just about any franchise)
however...
per S-n-P’s recent post, we did at least get to enjoy 7 straight years of above-average basketball, which is easy to forget when you think about the crap we’ve also had to endure

Another interesting (to me) tidbit
in the boxscore above:
Tim Duncan played 16 minutes, went 1-8 from the floor, had one rebound, and was -28.

Reading boxscores
Beats the heck out of reading the nonchronological (wrong word -Sequential?) recaps. The Spurs had 12 assists lead by Splitter with three. I don’t suppose they could play that game against the Wolves,

600 N First Ave "like a Pirate's cove".
Pop rested him the second half
Said since his guys weren’t playing well (and down by 18) he decided to rest them and see what other guys had.
Pop is 3 steps ahead of everyone else regarding this ridiculous compressed season.
yea, the early games this season are pretty rough
The Spurs just blew out the Clippers. Then they stunk up the joint in Houston.
The schedule with 7 games in 10 days is going to be brutal.
I can predict the future using Norm Van Lier's crystal balls.

What worries me is that Rubio saves Kahn's job
After all, if he turns out to be rookie of the year material, then the wolves will win more games, and when that happens Kahn’s job will get more secure. We all know that Taylor needs to hit rock-bottom before he’ll fire a managing employee.

As the President-For-Life
of the He-Man Kahn Haters Club, I’m perfectly fine with Kahn getting job security from Ricky Rubio and the Wolves doing well.

This would be a welcome trade off
Especially since RUMINT strongly suggest Kahn is just keeping a seat warm and an elliptical machine in use at this point.
I'm not sure
that if I had witnessed Kahn’s feverish workout in person, that I could be trusted to respond like a member of polite society would be expected to act.

Nope
My guess is that he doesn’t get to join the club of Glen’s sons-in-law, however. I think that is a safe bet.
(I think Team Adelman wishes him well, FWIW)
Rubio
I believe it was very early yesterday morning the “trending now” list on the Yahoo Home page had Ricky at number 4, that caused me to stop and think about cultural phenomenons for a bit.
I thought
Wes was number 4.

I also recall OKC was at one point kicking the tires on offering the #3 pick for #5 and #6. At the time most fans were opposed to this, but if they had done that, well,if they had done that they probably would have picked Rubio at #3 (although he maybe would have come over sooner with more salary available to put towards that buyout)…but alternatively, they could have taken James Harden and then Lawson at #18.
I remember I really liked Harden that whole season, although IIRC he tailed off the second half (and in the tourney in particular). I remember draft day morning hoping for an “all Ty” draft of Evans and Lawson. I thought Rubio and Harden would be gone.
Also, didn’t Kahn really like James Johnson, too? Wasn’t the Lawson deal hatched once Johnson went before #18?
What I heard
although I can’t remember the source so it’s probably not worth my time to type it — was that the Kings really wanted Johnson, Daye, or Earl Clark, and they were big fans of Flynn as well. So the plan we agreed to with them was to take one of the 3 SF’s for them, and deal the 18 and Flynn for Tyreke. Then those guys went 14-16 and we were stuck. I heard that like a week after the draft, but it hasn’t come up since so it was probably not legitimate.
There were
some Thabeet rumblings at the time, which were alarming then and are depressing now.

Seems so weird..
that Kevin McHale now coaches Jonny Flynn.
Rubio needs to be noticeably better at point guard than every other ’09er, and DeRozan needs to not get much better at wing. If those things happen, the Flynn thing is mitigated quite a bit. Odds of both of those things happening are, unfortunately, not good.

@PDWolves
Fun fact about the box score
Flynn had more TO’s in 8 minutes than Lowry and Dragic had in their 48 combined.
Flynn had fewer turnovers-per-smile.
Too hot to handle, too cold to hold

If you want to get encouraged about Rubio under Adelman look at Lowry
Lowry is a stud now. He posted a 16 points 8 rebounds 9 assists last game.
He was a quality back-up lifer who played tough D and couldn’t shoot, but with Adelman’s help he turned himself into a stud.
