Around SBN: Stan Van Gundy Fired As Head Coach Of The Magic

NBA reopening open thread

I was thinking that with all the attention given to the CP3 fiasco (with good reason), a lot of other transactions haven't been covered by ESPN, etc. So this is an attempt to pool the notable (and not so notable) signings, trades, amnesties, etc from the first day of business. What I've found so far follows the jump:

Star-divide

(EDITED)

Amnesty cuts:

Arenas (Magic)

Billups (Knicks)

Waived / Bought out:

Vince Carter (Suns)

Rip Hamilton (Pistons)

Trades:

Bass to Celtics, Big Baby to Magic

Pietrus to Raptors, 2nd rounder (or just trade exception?) to Suns Trade called off, Pietrus failed physical

Chandler sign-and-trade to Knicks (4 yr, 58 M), Turiaf to Wizards, 2nd rounder, Rautins, and a giant trade exception to Dallas

Dooling and 2nd round pick to Celtics, something called Albert Miralles to Bucks

Odom to Mavs, trade exception to Lakers

Signings:

Chuck Hayes to Kings (sadface...4 yr, 21.3M)

Marcus Thornton resigns with Kings (5 yr, 40M)

Caron Butler to Clips (3 yr, 24M)

Jason Kapono to Lakers

Shannon Brown to Suns

Grant Hill resigns with Suns (1 yr, 6.5M)

Telfair to Suns

Shane Battier to Heat

James Jones resigns with Heat

Curry to Heat

Mbah a Moute resigns with Bucks (4 yr, 19M)

Dunleavy, Jr to Bucks

Bibby to Knicks

West to Pacers

Young resigns with 76ers

Hawes resigns with 76ers

Pargo to Grizzlies

Radmanovic to Hawks

T-Mac to Hawks

Daniels, Wilcox, and Steimsma to Celtics

Jeff Green resigns with Celtics (1yr, 9M)

Von Wafer to Magic

Rasual Butler to Raptors

Magliore to Raptors

Vince Carter to Mavs

Brendan Wright to Mavs

Tinsley to Jazz

Prince resigns with Pistons (4 yr, 27M)

D Cook resigns with Thunder (2 yr, 6.5M)

Oden resigns with Blazers (qualifying offer, renegotiated due to injury setback)

Great!

Was looking for a post like this. All info in one place!

by y2jayjk on Dec 9, 2011 2:47 PM CST reply actions

First thoughts after looking through that list...

Too bad about Hayes, but if the Clips are going to have Butler soak up cap space, maybe we can make a move on Jordan after all…

Suns make no sense as always, shedding a usable piece (Pietrus) despite keeping Hill. But with him and Vince gone, maybe now they make a move to add a piece…

It’ll be fascinating to see if Chandler’s D can mask Amare’s lack thereof nearly as well as he could for Dirk. I know everyone’s going to talk now about Amare for CP3, but I’d be inclined to give the Melo/Amare/Chandler frontcourt a chance…

With the injury update re: Webster, I’d be shocked if he isn’t amnestied now…

by deus04 on Dec 9, 2011 2:48 PM CST reply actions

Webster's contract only has this year, with a team option on next.

Darko, meanwhile, has three more full seasons of money left.

"Opinion ...a confession."

by feral on Dec 9, 2011 3:13 PM CST up reply actions

I thought it was two more years of Darko with a team option for year 3?

I’d prefer two years of a potentially useful Darko to one year of Webster in a suit. And yes, by using the phrase “potentially useful Darko,” I should probably forfeit all posting rights for a week or something. Referring just to his ability to block some shots and play D on Timmy D, etc.

by deus04 on Dec 9, 2011 3:28 PM CST up reply actions

Unless you have a significant signing that's tangible, immediately available, and contingent on Webster's extra money,

I just don’t think you use your amnesty to gain $5 million for a single season.

"Opinion ...a confession."

by feral on Dec 9, 2011 5:07 PM CST up reply actions

+1

Either buy him out or let insurance cover it. No need to use amnesty. We arent getting Jordan, Nene, Gasol … or Hayes…. so, unless the cap space becomes an issue, leave it be.

Yah but...

I’m guessing Pek may be headed to Houston for a couple of 2nd rounders.

by zero_on_up on Dec 9, 2011 10:31 PM CST up reply actions

My understanding is that it is a use it or lose it

proposition. It has to be used on an existing contract. Except for those who think it should be used on Darko, it doesn’t do much for the Wolves. This should be named the Arenas rule.
As for the new “piece” movement, just about every player discussed here for center and SG is gone except Jordan, and he is Randolph in disguise. I guess Adelman believes he has what he needs?

Missed the Bass Big Baby deal.

Nice move for Boston, talent wise. What provokes Orlando to actively seek out Glen Davis at this moment? They’re not shedding salary in this way, and Bass is basically just better.

Glen Davis’ shitty defense won’t affect Orlando’s team defense with Howard in the middle. Glen Davis’ 20’ jump shot will help give Howard some space on offense as compared to Brandon Bass.

Derrick Williams was going to Bust...but then he was selected by the Timberwolves!

by Ebomb on Dec 9, 2011 4:05 PM CST up reply actions

If we assume equal value for the two players, then sure I can see the outlines of a transaction.

I just don’t see Big Baby as being worth as much as Bass. And Glen Davis is also a potential head case.

by feral on Dec 9, 2011 4:08 PM CST up reply actions

I agree regarding value

But sometimes fit concerns outweighs value. On the surface, you’re are correct, Bass is the better player. My fit hypothesis isn’t rooted in anything but watching Bass and Baby play a few times, not even sure if that’s a correct evaluation of Bass on offense.

Why?

As in, why would the Wolves sign him?

Is Luke on the block?

by quessa on Dec 10, 2011 5:31 PM CST up reply actions

He could have a similar role to what he had in Dallas

i.e. playing a fair bit of off-guard next to Kidd(Rubio). But he’s way too short to be a fulltime SG. He definitely had his moments last postseason, but that just means he’s about to get overpaid…hopefully not by us…

by deus04 on Dec 10, 2011 5:38 PM CST up reply actions

I suppose Kahn did say

by quessa on Dec 10, 2011 5:49 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

Barea played in the most used 5-man unit for Dallas last season

along with Jason Terry. I think you would see him a lot with Rubio. A better option than Wes Johnson, I suspect.

Anyway, I don’t expect him to get huge money; I believe the best the Knicks could do is 2yrs/$5 million. I’m sure he’d prefer the Knicks, but the Wolves can beat that offer financially.

Ha. How's his smile? Firm handshake?

Actually, i already do like Barea. I like him quite a bit; this is not a bad low cost option for the backcourt. In the absence of a big move for someone like Kevin Martin, Barea is a good choice.

He really can cause havoc, penetrate to score or find people.

The Wolves are like the worst meal you've ever had--terrible while you're eating it and even worse later.

by Eric in Madison on Dec 10, 2011 6:30 PM CST up reply actions

I agree that he's a better option than many others...

… but I worry about opportunity costs associated with a move like this. I guess that’s all, really. He’s great on a tiny contract, not so great if it makes adding a real, live SG even harder than it already is. I’d enjoy watching him, I guess, and he’d help.

by TheH on Dec 10, 2011 8:46 PM CST up reply actions

I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt on personnel moves this offseason

on the premise that Adelman is behind them. Barea fits one of our two gaping needs from a functional standpoint if not a positional one. He’s also proven to have a few productive NBA skills.

Of those three guys, Thaddeus is clearly the one ticking up the last two years.

Green has if anything trended down even before the trade. How much has Beasley’s worth changed since the deal from the HEAT?

"Opinion ...a confession."

by feral on Dec 9, 2011 5:09 PM CST up reply actions

I think you get him on a team with a good point guard and let him play the 4

I think he’s been on questionable at best teams for him his whole career. The Celtics post big three I think could be a nice place for him playing with Rondo.

Beasley can absolutely score, he can absolutely create his own shot…sometimes both him being able to score and create his own shot don’t happen on the same possession, however.

He’s a volume scorer…but there is a place for that in the NBA. I think the Celtics could use him. I think he’d give them a lot for this season as they really do need a gunner to play when Pierce is on the bench. Bucks I think would benefit from him, Nuggets.

He’s a tough player to have admittedly, because he kind of needs the offense to be built through him but I don’t think anyone trusts him enough to do that. Whether it’s professionally or personally he hasn’t earned that trust. He’s a catch-22 at this point, but I look at a team like Milwaukee that has some solid role players and plays solid defense, or Charlotte or Denver and I think those are the places for him to go.

by Wolvesguy on Dec 9, 2011 6:22 PM CST up reply actions

Why?

(Just wondering).
For a formerly very-good player, he sure acted like a clown during the Kuester era in Detroit (I am not putting all of the blame on him—even remotely—for that morass, btu still). Too old and will likely be too spendy for us, not to mention being a locker room concern.

by Malastare on Dec 9, 2011 5:11 PM CST up reply actions

His story is plenty odd.

He was drafted by Boston under Pitino, and Denver – a pick later – was ticked to miss on the home town kid. Shortly after that the Nuggets traded for him. He languished. Signed here, started to figure things out. Signed in Detroit, emerged, and had the heart of his career. Got dealt for Iverson – back to Denver for stop number two. Went to the Knicks as a bit part in the ’Melo deal.

Returning to Boston at this point would sort of complete the arc.

Yep.

A rarity in the NBA, good guy, great defender on the 2-4.

If they never play NBA basketball again, then I'll never watch it again.

I never thought I'd see the day

When I was feeling sorry for how the League was screwing over the Lakers.

Mbah a Moute

Great Defender- Horrible Offensive Player. He could probably start for a team at the 3 next to a Great Wing Player. He’s the type of the guy that on a really good team should be the 5th Best Starter (Is this worth 19 Million probably).

Yeah,

there’s a case to be made that blocking the original trade would eventually help the Lakers.

Heh

Billups isn’t taking his amnesty too well. Basically warned teams not to claim him. link

by archie2227 on Dec 10, 2011 2:25 PM CST reply actions

Just for the heck of it...

IF the Pups were to pick him up on waivers and then trade him to a contender, would NY still be on the hook for the rest of his salary?? Seems that if you could convince Billups that this would work, it’d be a win-win for everybody (except Dolan and the Knicks, which is a win-win for the rest of us! lol).

And do you mean he is going to Dallas? Are they under the cap with that Chandler trade?

Bibby to Knicks

In related news, Knicks are in the market for a starting PG. Sounds like they’re trying to see if there’s any possible way to get Barea.

by deus04 on Dec 10, 2011 4:18 PM CST reply actions

Just read the list of participants in Denver's first day of camp

Two point guards, three centers, plus Gallinari and Harrington. Poor bastards.

It’s a shame Milwaukee matched their offer for Mbah a Moute. Unless it’s a sign-and-trade situation where we’re hooking Denver up with warm bodies (e.g. Beasley, Ellington, and Hayward?), I think the Afflalo dream is just about over.

by deus04 on Dec 10, 2011 4:26 PM CST reply actions

I saw on the twitterverse that the wolves brought Bonzi Wells to camp

I didn’t see it anywhere else yet, so I thought I’d share. Apparently he was in Houston during Adelman’s first year.

Between him and Barea, the Wolves are sort of fishing for warm bodies at SG right now.

Bonzi’s past it, he’d be a Sasha Pavlovic-level addition at the very most. We’re turning over stones.

"Opinion ...a confession."

by feral on Dec 10, 2011 8:31 PM CST up reply actions

Wells is, one hopes, merely training camp fodder

Barea can actually play. I would be pleased if something came of that. I wonder how hard they are looking to make a trade for someone. If they wind up signing Barea, they are going to have to thin out the roster somehow, I think, even with Webster’s injury.

It appears that DHoward would like to go the Nyets

Allegedly, the Nyets are looking for picks in exchange for removing ~$5million in salary so they can give Lopez and picks straight up for Howard and Turkeyglue. I’m wondering if we could put together a package for Marshon Brooks or Anthony Morrow (or both). Or, perhaps we could get Redick? He isn’t THE answer, but he’s a vet who works hard and has much improved defense. Would we have anything Orlando wants? There has to be a way for the Wolves to get in on this and swap out a big for a 2G (IMHO).

Rubio + DWilliams + Adelman = suck it Clippergeddon

by nodnarb on Dec 10, 2011 9:28 PM CST up reply actions

For example

I’m assuming Orlando wants Marshon Brooks…so this might be an option. Then again, rumor mill has it that they re-upped with Jason Richardson. If that is the case…

the sun just might be shining on a wolves ass…perhaps this would fly.

Beasley would fill a need for them (if he were to play PF) and he is an expiring…so they have a contract year to decide if they want him.

Just thinking out loud here. The Adelmans have me all…optimistic, to say the least.

by nodnarb on Dec 10, 2011 9:41 PM CST up reply actions

So do the Clippers match in 1.3 seconds or 1.5?

I’d assumed someone was going to drive the price up a little higher than that…this actually feels about right for him, to be honest.

by deus04 on Dec 10, 2011 10:41 PM CST up reply actions

Probably closer to 8M I guess, but I thought he'd get silly money from a desperate team

I mean, Jeff freaking Green just got 9M (not taking into account the tax implications). One year deal, but still.

by deus04 on Dec 10, 2011 10:51 PM CST up reply actions

Not in a vaccum

(or in a Wolves uniform) but maybe he is with the Clippers if it goes a long way in retaining Blake Griffin for the next decade. And speaking of Blake Griffin, he’s the type of offensive horse that can make up for a total lack of polish from the center next to him. I don’t think the Wolves would have such an easy time with a center like DeAndre. I liked him better for us when we had Big Al.

by Andy G on Dec 11, 2011 12:15 PM CST up reply actions

I hope Stern suspends Chauncey big time.

His stance is completely negative for the business. If a couple teams enter a bidding war following the amnesty system NYK could save about 3 or even 4 millions, easily. So, the guy rants and make them lose about a coupe million dollars, frightening the possible suitors with a circumvention of the current CBA.

Least pro ever. Suspend him hard. In fact, if I´m the Knicks, he would be sued yesterday.

by pagliatti on Dec 11, 2011 3:40 AM CST reply actions

Yeah, that is out of bounds and

I would have thought out of character, since I had thought Billips was one of the grownups in the NBA. He must really be ticked about how he’s been shuffled from team to team, like an end of the bench guy.
