Amnesty?
…looking more like it now

that's disappointing
I was hoping to see what he could do when healthy.
Amnesty
Sign DAJ to a large offer sheet, if matched, no problem, Webster unlikely to play this year due to recurring back injuries and with team option next season that is unlikely to be picked up, no harm no foul.
Derrick Williams was going to Bust...but then he was selected by the Timberwolves!
Martell is making this year's money, and then the team has an option on next. Darko has three years left on his deal.
You don’t need to amnesty someone who’s making another middle-class year’s salary. You do it to clear more than that.
"Opinion ...a confession."
Webster is making more money this year
Allowing us to give a bigger offer to DAJ. Webster is also useless, Darko at least can play minutes on the court.
Derrick Williams was going to Bust...but then he was selected by the Timberwolves!
*IF* you have an immediate signing that's contingent on his money opening up, okay.
If it was a push between his money and Darko’s, though, you open that cap space for more time with Milicic. It’s only a $500k difference.
I’m in no big hurry to fire the amnesty bolt without either significant cap space gained or a specific move in hand.
"Opinion ...a confession."
Goodbye, Martell
If he can’t play, no sense in paying his contract when we can get it off our cap now and use the financial flexibility. Back troubles are not something that go away quickly and once and for all.
"I don't want to have to read you the riot act, but I am going to have to read you some extracts from the riot act."
To be clear, nothing against Martell. I think it’s a bad situation for him, but it’s a business.

To be more clear...
he still gets paid. It just comes off the cap. So it’s still only useful if we’re going to make a push to sign someone (which I’m all for).

Coincidence
I just received an email from Mexico proclaiming a miracle medication for post-surgery disc abnormalities. The only asked for a friendly $3,000 upfront investment.
Think David Kahn would go for it?

Does the timing of this announcement
strike anyone else as a little bit strange?
Nope.
It only came up because Martel wasn’t speaking at the press conference (or whatever went down today).
With every injury is an opportunity.
Wes Johnson may very well have been a reserve behind Webster, had this injury (or condition is perhaps the better term) not happened.
Sink or swim, Wes. I think you’ll get your chance in the coming weeks.
And remember...
“I mean he’s only 19. It’s just so amazing to me how young these kids are. This kid has a body that’s hard to believe. He’s 6-10, 260 [pounds], 6 percent body fat, he’s really sturdy. I think that he’ll have a very long and productive career.” – http://www.startribune.com/sports/wolves/124396524.html

Good bye, Martell
Back surgeries for basketball players is deadly.
Wonder if the Wolves will get anything back from the Blazers. Doubtful, I know.

Can't make comparisons
Back abnormalities vary. But Martell’s has been long-standing approaching chronic.
The odds are very remote that Webster comes back in game shape.

you can have Luke Babbitt back
but then he’d just be using one your valuable roster spots instead…

The last time Rick Adelman was the Blazers' coach
Martell Webster was 7.
But now that you mention it, I think I recall some sort of “toddler gets flattened while bum-rushing the court” incident around 1990..

Means more minutes for Lee (SG) and Tolliver (F) IMO
Team losing a 3 point threat though. Too bad – seems like a decent guy. POR must still be chuckling over that deal.

That's too bad
I wish Martell the best of luck rehabbing his back, that’s a difficult injury to ever fully rehab.
Amnesty him. Now.
No equivocation. This team cannot go down this route every season w a guy who they clearly didn’t do their homework on before trading for him.

I think they can only use their amnesty 1 time
During the life of this CBA, which could be up to 10 years long.
by fanslaststand on Dec 9, 2011 4:39 PM CST up reply actions
But you seem really sure about it. Let's go for it!
Or you want to think it over?
by fanslaststand on Dec 9, 2011 4:43 PM CST up reply actions
This is misleading
because the amnesty can only be used on a player signed under the previous CBA. The Wolves have no real longterm deals at anything like big money, so their window to use the amnesty is this year and maybe next on Darko or Pekovic.

Great point!
That’s probably why they called it amnesty and not a ‘get out of jail free sometime’ provision.
by fanslaststand on Dec 9, 2011 4:50 PM CST up reply actions
This is the basis of my argument
Back problems are trouble, and the Wolves needed to seriously consider adding a 2 anyway. Amnesty him, get Ronny Turiaf for free since the Knicks are giving him away to sign Chandler, and grab at least Anthony Parker or Marco Belinelli.

yes

by Eric in Madison on Dec 9, 2011 6:15 PM CST up reply actions
Do you have that in a more recent source than this one a few days ago?
Each team permitted to waive 1 player prior to any season of the CBA (only for contracts in place at the inception of the CBA) and have 100% of the player’s salary removed from team salary for Cap and Tax purposes.
That was the CBA language itself. As of whenever this SI article was posted, its meaning was apparently in the air:
Even the league is unsure of amnesty
….The key phrase there is "in place." The NBA told me "in place" meant on a team’s roster right now, so that teams could not use amnesty on a player they acquire via a trade made after the league resumes player movement business on Dec. 9. But union sources insist the two sides have not discussed this scenario in detail, meaning it must be hashed out, along with hundreds of other details, as the two sides scramble to complete the CBA by the end of business on Dec. 8. Perhaps "in place" in regards to amnesty-eligible contracts could simply mean "in existence now," regardless of which team holds the contract.
You have seen the resolution of that, concretely?
"Opinion ...a confession."
I suppose I have not
As in, I have not seen the official interpretation of that clause from the league. But I have never heard from any source that it would be available for anything except contracts already on your roster.
I’m almost certain I’m right. And it’s not as if you are hearing rumors about deals for big contracts that will then be amnestied. Nobody seems to be exploring that, which confirms for me that it isn’t allowed.
The Wolves are like the worst meal you've ever had--terrible while you're eating it and even worse later.

He wasn’t talking like a guy who is out indefinitely.
He was talking about playing in January.
THIS January.
Check out Humdinger TV on YouTube.

Wolves shouldn´t use the amnesty on him or Miller.
They are injured, the insurance pays them.
If they get amnestied nobody claims them because they are injured and the Wolves now pay them the whole contract. Nice way to do business.
Mayyyybe if you get a superstar on a salary dump trade or something similar you could revisit the idea….for basketball reasons.
Right, it's strictly cap space for either of them, and it's not even that much or for that long.
"Opinion ...a confession."
Amnesty if
Cap space is needed to sign a SG or C.
We never saw what Martell could do and we probably never will….
That exhibition game in London
convinced me to wait for him. I think he’ll be back in January, and at some point this season even the doubters will be glad we’ve got him.
He was dominant in that UK game against the Lakers and that’s what I’m waiting to see again.
They call me TMiss, but TCrank would be closer to the mark.
If Martell has to retire...
…I think we should trade him to Portland for Roy.
That way Roy can retire a Timberwolf the way God intended.
He who rides a wolf cannot dismount.
I think the
indefinitely is what is scaring everyone. Just because they don’t have a date doesn’t mean he won’t come back this season. If he says January I think we should count on him coming back at some point. Let’s trust our teams physicians on this one.
