Last night's game against Houston was fun. I had fun watching Wayne Ellington and Kevin Love nail huge shots at the end. I liked rooting for Jonny Flynn, even though he has three headslappingly stupid plays a game. I liked watching Anthony Tolliver really get after it. I loved watching the players jump around in celebration after the win. It was fun. I was then really surprised to see some, maybe even a majority of people react to the win by focusing on potential trades and why this win didn't prove anything. It really made think about why I care about this team, why I spend my time watching, thinking and talking about this eminently frustrating and often bad team. This is just a few thoughts about why I care about the Timberwolves.
Watching Kevin Garnett play on this team was an amazing experience. When he was young, he had so much enthusiasm and love for the game. He liked playing and he made watching the game fun. For the first time last night, maybe since KGs early career, I saw that sense of fun return to the team. That is what I love about basketball. The NFL may have structural competitive advantages over basketball but there isn't another sport where the players visibly enjoy playing the game more than basketball. At some point I would like the team to win a championship but I would be perfectly happy watching a team that has fun playing and winning sometimes. Games like last night remind me why I like watching the Wolves. Can we get to the playoffs playing like we did last night? Probably not. But I guess my point is that for now, I don't really care. Why do you care?
