I live in Ohio and was listening to some sports radio on the way home last night and there was some serious consideration being given to passing on Irving with the first pick. They clearly acknowledged him as the BPA, but they were getting a little "cute" with their drafting strategy, explanation after the jump
Now I realize this is just sports talk radio, but I thought it interesting to pass on anyway (but please don't get too much false hope).
Ok, here are their reasons. They are really looking for both a PG and a "big" in the draft. The two "bigs" that they really want are Kanter or Williams, and they are really afraid that they will go 2/3. I suppose with the little information we have at this time, that may be a legit concern. So the host and many of the callers were suggesting taking Kanter #1, and then they know there would be a PG available at 4, they were specifically targeting Knight from the talk I heard.
So far, this is just some talk radio, but definitely something worth keeping an eye on for 2 reasons
1.) We may be able to stay put at #2 and pick up Irving
2.) Cleveland may be willing to swap #2/#4 to guarantee they get this two guys they want.
I'll keep you posted if I hear any of this talk picking up steam, but at this point it is more of just the 'day after' talk where they were lamenting having the 1 & 4 in a weak draft.
