Draft

What's the chance the Wolves could package a Rubio deal with Washington along with a pick swap and a first round pick next year? (I'm sure slim to none but I want that pick back, Damn Marko Jaric!)  I really want no part of Enes Kantor or any of the other Euros (hence the screen name).  I really like Brandon Knight and Kawhi Leonard.  I know everyone thinks Williams is a lock at number 2 but I'm not sure his skills will translate to NBA Superstar.  He will definitely be a serviceable player but the Wolves need a superstar that's willing to work his tail off to build a franchise.  Some say Leonard could drop all the way to 20 but I think his work ethic will put him in the top ten.  Chris Singleton would be a great deal at 20.  Rubio's obviously not coming here and if he did I don't think he would want to build his career in Minnesota long term and as such will be a turd playing for a contract.  Long story short, a draft that lands Knight, Singleton and an unprotected first rounder in 2012 would make my summer!

True

They really don’t need him. I just like their spot in the draft and want to unload Rubio to get a 2012 unprotected pick.

More importantly

Why do people think that Rubio is “obviously” not coming over? We’ve known it would take 2 years ever since he signed with Barcelona. Now with the lockout, it’s pretty apparent it’ll be 3 years if he doesn’t sign in the next 9 days. Even if he’s a “turd” playing for a contract, we have him for 4 years plus the right to match his contract in RFA. If we don’t have this team turned around in 7-9 years, everyone would leave, not just Rubio.

And to be perfectly honest, I see no reason for Kahn to acquire a pick in next year’s draft when almost everyone knows there’s about a 10% chance that he’s picking in 2012. It’d be nice to get that pick back, but ultimately who’s making the trades?

Huh?

First of all if Rubio isn’t here in 2011 which is highly likely, he’s no longer subject to the rookie salary cap and can negotiate any length of contract he wants. Second I still don’t see the love affair with him. He scores 5 points a game off the bench in a lesser league, he can’t jump or shoot, about a 38% FG shooter, he handles the basketball well and looked to have huge upside when he was 18, he’s now going to be 21, 22 when he starts playing in the NBA and he’s never played this level of competition. Again the Wolves need an absolute stud not a complimentary role player that can give you 10 pts and 8 assists a night. He can stay in Europe. How many Euro league players have come to the NBA and led their team to the finals? And don’t you dare say Pau Gasol! I love Dirk and Tony Parker’s been great thanks to Pockavich and the Big Fundamental. But do you really want to watch the flopfest that is European guards, see Manu Ginobili.
If Kahn can get something decent in this draft, fire Rambis, hire someone who can lead the team to 30 wins, have a lottery pick in 2012, I reallly don’t think he’ll be fired. Remember how long Taylor stuck with Kevin McHale? This is only his third year. I’m not a fan of Ghengis Kahn but think this scenario is much more likely than Rubio ever coming to Minnesota and becoming a perennial all star that leads the team back to the playoffs.

Off the bench?

My purpose wasn’t to say Rubio will be good. That isn’t a debate I want to get in with a guy whose name is “nomoreeuros.” I won’t argue about basketball with a guy who doesn’t think Manu Ginobili is fun to watch. You clearly don’t like Rubio, and you clearly have never watched him play, as you think he comes off the bench when he’s healthy. As basketball debate on this topic with you isn’t worth my time.

However, back on point. Nothing Rubio has EVER said insinuates he won’t play in Minnesota. There have been stories for 2 years based on him saying “Minnesota is cold” before the draft, and there was a backlash when he said he’d like to play for Miami or Boston this season (for what it’s worth, so would I.) And yes, he will be off the rookie cap. However, the Wolves will never accept him for a short deal, and even if we did, we’d still be able to match his RFA offer. The only way Rubio would dodge us holding his rights is if he retires for a year, and comes back. As I said, we’ve known since about August of 2009 that he wouldn’t come over until this year, and we anticipated that the lockout would throw a wrench in his plans to come to the NBA. Nothing new has happened for 2 years, no matter what the New York Post writers want you to think.
