The elephant in the room is that we don't know how the new CBA will look. That said let's take a look at how the key players (teams that may have cap-space to sign players above and beyond the mid-level exemption crowd) in the upcoming free agency market are positioned.
*note all salary numbers are from the team salary database located at www.shamsports.com
On the books: $46,035,499
The Rockets have 9 players on the books for next year with total salary commitments of $46,035,499
Team options and unguaranteed deals:
Marcus Cousin (unknown min salary for the new CBA fully unguaranteed)
Marqus Blakely (unknown min salary for the new CBA fully unguaranteed)
Goran Dragic $2,108,000 team option
Chase Budinger $884,293 fully unguaranteed
Restricted Free Agents:
None
Unrestricted Free Agents:
2011 Draft picks:
14th, 23rd, and 38th overall
Trade Exceptions:
$443,640 T. Ariza
$7,354,500 S Battier
$473,604 I. Smith
$780,871 J. Taylor
Breakdown:
The Rockets have a few things going for them. First if they pick up the option/don't waive Dragic and Budinger they will have only $49,027,792 on the books for 11 roster slots. Fill in their two rookie scale first rounders (assuming 120% of rookie scale contract for each) and they'll be looking at 13 players at approx $52,150,312. Hayes is an unrestricted free agent so they'll have some decisions to make. They can aim to resign him, draft a 5, go with Miller/and Thabeet, and or make a run at one of the other free agent centers. Overall Houston is looking at about the same situation as the Wolves....likely most of their roster already accounted for and low $50 millions in total cap used.
