Would Josh Smith work?
It has been widely known that Josh Smith will be available this offseason... I am wondering what the feeling around here is about him. I think he's a defensive big man that would help us greatly, especially with Ricky running the point. We could be a very athletic team, and with Ricky Rubio and Josh Smith added to our squad, I think we could be a greatly improved defensive team, along with adding some veteran leadership and not taking anything away from our offense....
What I propose is trading the #20 pick, Nikola Pekovic, Jonny Flynn, and Anthony Randolph for Josh Smith and Jeff Teague (if needed)... I think this gives them some financial relief, along with a first round pick this year and a few young pieces that could work well with Joe Johnson and Al Horford...
We would then have a line-up as follows(assuming we take Williams at #2):
PG: Ricky Rubio, Luke Ridnour
SG: Wes Johnson, Martell Webster
SF: Michael Beasley, Derrick Williams
PF: Josh Smith, Anthony Tolliver
I would be comfortable with any of the above players playing 20 minutes a game, and the 5 starters would all have the potential to grow together with the right coach... I think the athleticism of Johnson, Beasley, Smith, and Williams, along with Rubio's passing and Kevin Love's all-around game would make this team compete for 35-42 wins next year, with the right coach (if we keep Rambis we're looking at 24-28)... Does this sound like a logical option for us? I know there has been some hesitation to move Kevin Love to C, but with Smith next to him (2+ BPG), it may make the transition easier??? Williams, the BPA would be in the regular rotation and probably get 25 MPG... This is just a thought I had this afternoon... Am I crazy to think this may work, or is this an actual option that we should pursue?

Therefore, no, Smith doesn’t work.

I like Smith, but
I can’t fathom a way that Atlanta wouldn’t get a dozen or more much better offers for Smith.

This
is also true.
Also, trading for Smith and then drafting Williams wouldn’t work. We all know that Kahn likes to double (and triple) up on positions, but having 4 (Love, Williams, Smith, and Tolliver) Power Forwards in the lineup with another sorta PF (Beasley) is a bit much.
They want to get rid of his contract...
They will be paying Johnson, Horford, and Hinrich, and need depth. I think they may get better offers, but we could offer a little more as well. I just think Love could play Center if he has a good, shot-blocking PF next to him, who excells in help defense… That’s what Smith is.
I think Horford is looked at as a very good defensive center because of Smith, when in reality, he’s just average… I think Love could become an average to above average defensive center with Smith playing alongside him… What center’s in the West would cause problems? I know it’s probably only 3-ish???
Horford is seen as good because Horford is good
Smith is a nice shot blocker, but Horford is a legitimate defensive player. He has been since right away as a rookie, and even in college (two excellent defensive big man and a fantastic defensive wing equaled back to back titles). Smith is a good enough player, I feel he is a big overrated (I know Hawks fans get very frustrated with his offense), but I see no way that this is the best offer they can get.

IMO
I highly doubt that the Hawks would just “throw in” Teague. The guy became a major player for them towards the end of the year
I understand that...
The (if needed) was for money purposes… I don’t think it would be needed, thus I left him out of the line-up. I guess it’s not a popular idea around here. I still think it could work though…
Yeah, there was a SUSTAINED (ahem) campaign by a poster here
… to get Smoove onto the Wolves… and this was even before we landed AR. Smoove really wouldn’t fit onto this roster unless you plan to move Love and Beas/AR.
There has been a deluge of...
proposed trades on CH that involve us bundling up our miscellaneous debris in exchange for an established productive player.
If you were the Hawks, would you pull the trigger on this trade? In my book, it is unpalatable from Atlanta’s perspective, even before Teague gets his name thrown into the mix.
Agreed
I cannot imagine anyone would return a starter to us in a trade that does not include Love, Beasley, or maybe Wes.
No thanks.
1) I’d rather draft Biyombo and get the defense through a guy on his rookie contract who appears to have a solid character and motor than pay Smith his outlandish figure to block a few shots and chuck up a slurry of jump shots every game.
2) Also, I don’t see a way that Beastley, Williams and Smith can be productive on the same team. They are a bit redundant.
3) I don’t want to trade AR yet.
Can we make stupidity more painful?
Not a chance
No way the Hawks take a crappy return like that for two of their core guys and J-Smoove is NOT the kind of guy the Wolves should be targeting. I love his athleticism and defense, but he’s yet ANOTHER combo forward and his attitude is questionable at best.
+1
Josh would take at least the #2 plus a legit player. I would think a offer of Beasley and the 2 for Josh is actually a legit offer, though an offer I wouldn’t do though Josh is possibly the best defender in the league though which is something we desperately need.

The Hawks wouldn't want Beasley + #2
for the same reasons we don’t want it. The clear BPA choice at 2 is basically Beasley’s clone without the maladjusted personality.
hawks dont want scrubs for teague who is on rise after playoff run and jsmoove
rick sund would laugh at this offer
I've heard Smith is on the block...
I didn’t have Teague in the initial offer… Would a deal like this be more appealing?
MN in: Josh Smith
ATL in: Michael Beasley, Anthony Tolliver, #20
