Let me begin by saying that this is NOT a deal that I would likely do. I am putting out there something I believe Kahn could do, especially considering some of the latest news from the wire.
The latest news is that Williams has been working out with Wes and Beas - he's saying they could all play together (2-3-4). He's probably right. He and Wes should be great on D, and Beas would improve his D guarding the 4.
The latest news also has the Wolves high on Williams. Of course, that could be driving up the asking price (if so, good job front office), but it could also be legit.
So those are the facts. And here's one bit of opinion - The traditional wisdom, at this point, is to trade Beasley (or Williams). But Beasley is currently an undervalued commodity. On the flipside, KLove's value is at its peak. He had a monster season last year (though his defense was suspect). He was the toast of the NBA. But he benefitted from playing on a weak team. Don't get me wrong - I love him (roll out all the bad puns). He's my favorite t-wolf. But his value probably won't get much higher. Two other factors: he's the last non-Kahnian on the team (a vestige of the McHale era that Kahn disdains), and Williams is working out with Beas and Wes - not Love.
So here's what the Wolves will do:
Draft Williams & trade KLove. They'll be able to land, perhaps, OJ Mayo & Marc Gasol (sign & trade) or McGee and Crawford (plus some throw-in to make the trade work). The lineup would then be:
PG: Rubio/Ridnour
SG: Johnson/Mayo
SF: Williams/Johnson
PF: Beasley/Randolph
C: Gasol/Darko
or
PG: Rubio/Ridnour
SG: Johnson/Crawford
SF: Williams/Johnson
PF: Beasley/Randolph
C: McGee/Darko
I can imagine Kahn's mind turning - now THAT team can run & gun, and it is much improved defensively. I'm not saying I'd vote for the trade, but I don't think it's beyond the Kahn-man's reach.
Thoughts?
