I'm not going in the same direction as the very complete and awesome post by biggity. Yes, this team has a collection of very unique and interesting prospects, all very well suited to a style of play that will probably best highlight and utilize Ricky's talents and unique vision. I wouldn't mind watching that mad scientist experiment if they got the right coach to put it together, and to figure out how that team would play defensively.
I'm posting about another thing that this team has... a whole lot of. The current TWolves are stocked full of decent contributing ballers who nearly all are on their rookie deals still. Think about that: Ricky, Wes, Beasley, KLove, D Williams, Randolph... all still on their rookie deals. Yes, no one is getting traded right now. But, I think I see a plan here. The Wolves weren't able to trade that #2 pick for anything that knocked their socks off. So, they stood pat, and did the wise thing, take that perceived second best player in the draft.
What might the plan be?
Well, I have to imagine that the plan is very closely related to that new CBA, the one that the owners want a hard cap and to take back as much as $7 billion from the players over a long contract. Anything can happen still, but if the league puts in a restrictive cap, you know that teams will be interested in young, contributing players on their rookie deals. The Wolves have a whole bunch of those. There will be teams that well need to clear cap space or create flexibility, or gain some longer control of players through options. Well, the Wolves will be a team with a few interesting options for a lot of teams to think about.
The league is going to go into shutdown mode here in a few days. After things get back up and running, it is very likely that teams will have to start making moves very quickly. As much as I get annoyed by Kahn opening up new windows for this team to finally add those finishing pieces, I think the Wolves have once again managed to positions themselves pretty well for one of these windows. Now, maybe the Wolves can actually pull it off this time. The last time, we all know what they did with all those draft picks and space... instead of jumping through the window, they lit a flaming bag of poo and ran off. Better luck next time, I hope.
