Instant poll: Should Don Nelson be our next coach?
We might as well gauge the interest in Nelson with a show of hands. The last instant poll seemed to indicate a majority in favor of the hire, but I just want to be sure, especially since he seems to be chomping at the bit to coach this team.
I would expect that the next poll would be who the fans choice would be for our next coach, but since some candidates interest are unknown at this time, for the purposes of this particular poll, I'd like to know if the majority of Wolves fans would support the hiring of Don Nelson to be the next coach of this young and somewhat talented squad.

He doesn't develop young players
He doesn’t care about defense
He doesn’t really even care anymore, he is not a good person to be running a team. Didn’t anyone watch what was happening in GS the last few years he was there? Don Nelson is not fit to coach a team.
I read somewhere that his teams were actually pretty good defensively.
He seems enthusiastic, too. Compare that to Rambis’ demeanor, who rarely left the bench or raised his voice. He can hire assistants to help develop young players. He’s succeeded is the past. Why not now?

He openly and verbally delegated the defense to an assistant.
Which is not technically a bad thing, but he presented it as just not caring enough or having the energy to care about coaching defense. It’s hard to reconcile the enthusiasm seen while he campaigns for the job with what I saw in Golden State the past few years.
Exactly
Maybe previous seasons he cared, worked hard, coached defense. But ‘what I saw in Golden State the past few years,’ is a very bad thing. The doesn’t care enough anymore to help a team.
Either that he doesn’t care, or hes just gone a little senile.
Man, maybe 'were'
The last few years, all he was doing was chasing the coaching wins record. He didn’t care his players or his team. He just made a mockery of the coaching position.
He’s old. Doesn’t have the same care or passion for the game. He resume is good, but the recent stuff is what we are going to get, and we don’t want it.
I just want to see some wins

Ditto
I’m sure any coach can lead us to more than 17. Infact, I’m sure we could win more than 17 without a coach.
However, I really, really don’t think ol’ Donny Boy is going to help us much, if at all. He doesn’t handle players well, and I don’t see him getting any respect from our team.

the chance to gouge some Minnesotan
if Nellie comes here.

he has the most wins as a coach in the NBA
hes not afraid to go small ball and run the other teams outta the gym, he gets his players to buy into his system and isnt afraid to set an example of someone if they rock the boat(Sjax) and one more thing….hes actually interested in coaching for us

Mad
Of all the Mads…Eric in Mad; Mad Dan; Madson’s 3 pt barrage, you seem the most optimistic Mad…(well, tied with Madson’s barrage). This dude will put Love on the court with Beast, with Wes, with Williams, with Rubio.
Why do Wolves fans object to fun?? This is fun fun fun til daddy took the t-bird away.

Nelson had his better days.
Is this team serious about winning or just to make money? There are other coaches out there..give a new guy a chance.
I really can't believe...
that the vote is almost 50/50.
HE IS THE MOST WINNINGEST COACH OF ALL TIME.
Jesus Christ you people are dumb. You can really find the negative in any situation. Every time some positive Wolves news comes along there is a huge contingent of people that twist it around and find the crap lining. (reference to opposite of silver lining it was the best i could come up with).
I don’t know what to say if people are not happy with one of the top coaches in NBA history leading the Wolves.
And these are all the same people who were insisting that no good coach would ever sniff the Wolves because of all these complicated reasons. Which are all now proven wrong.
But can these people just eat some crow and show some humility? No. They just poop on the new turn of events and pretend their previous errors never happened.
pathetic.
We would be lucky to have Nelson. End of story.

concur
though in defense of the malcontents, it seems like a lot of the people down on Nellie are only so because they’re comparing him to Adelman (and the optimism/delusion that he’s available).
I’m pumped that Nellie’s pumped to be here, and I never expected there’d be any established coach interested in coming here.

if you have noticed nelson has done a lot of losing..most of the winning was earlier in his coaching career when he cared more. he hasn’t done much winning in a long time.

It is normally very counter-productive to escalate here
But fuck you ‘wolver.’
Jesus Christ you people are dumb
Seriously? That is what you have to say?
How about:
He win percent is .565, and because you’re so smart I don’t have to explain that he didn’t win much more than half his games.
Also, because you are so well versed, you already know that to totally tuned out the last few season of GS, belittled their organization, and only stuck around to break the record.
May I also add, Don Nelson doesn’t care about developing youth, and he doesn’t care about defense.
Get out of here is you’re gonna talk like that. Of course there are rational reasons why we wouldn’t want him.
Worthless.

.565
I think that’s better than any coach the Wolves have had. His last two seasons in GS sucked, but that’s a small blip on a rather remarkable career.
Doesn’t care about developing youth? Not a fair or accurate statement. Nelson has said he doesn’t care to develop players who don’t play hard. I think that’s fair. Steve Nash blossomed under Don Nelson. He’s a great coach for point guards. Anthony Randolph struggled because he didn’t play hard. Too bad. I’d rather have Rubio have a coach who lets him flourish than Randolph (if I have to pick).
Doesn’t care about Defense? …Yup.
I don’t see who else the Wolves might get who has league respect and player respect. You can’t bust on the most winningest coach of all time. “Coach don’t know what he’s talking about!” “Uh, yeah, he kinda does.”
Admittedly, Nellie Ball is a lil crazy, but so are the Wolves. This is a match made in heaven for the Wolves — a bunch of mismatched parts who want to run and a coach who loves to make mismatched parts run. The other argument that long-term Nellie won’t move the club forward any? Whatever. If anything, we get league recognition, a winning attitude, a proven coach, and a slightly better record. That’s obviously worthwhile even if we replace him in two years. We won’t get a championship with Nellie — I’d put money on that. But if anyone is angling for a championship right now, you’re rooting for the wrong team. We are team baby steps right now.
Final argument, if not Nelson, then who?
The vote should really be...
Would you rather take Don Nelson or see what’s behind Kahn’s Door #2? I’ll take Don.

Good point about Nash
Although Nash himself likely deserves most of the credit, it is true that Nash-style ball started when Nellie was coaching Dallas, so Nellie surely deserves some credit for it – and Nash then brought it to Phoenix.
Maybe Rubio + D Williams can be our version of Nash to NOvitzki or Nash to Amare..
Like others have stated, Nelson’s age concerns me, however I remember when Hubie Brown coached the Grizz for 1 or 2 years and brought them back from the depths of hell, and Hubie must have been older than Nellie is now.
Also, Nellie said recently, he has a consistent track record of joining teams with not so ideal records and making them better.. Even if he only coaches a couple years, the team will be in position to take the next step.
Although Adelman would be a good choice, I think I would also be excited about Nellie.
Funny
This is an ESPN insider article from today about coaches.
5. Is Don Nelson the answer in Minnesota?
Kevin Arnovitz, ESPN.com: The Timberwolves want to play an unorthodox style with Ricky Rubio at the controls. Why not make an unorthodox hire and tap renowned European coach Ettore Messina to run the show? Messina is a master of inside-out basketball and knows how to maximize skilled big men.
Rahat Huq, Red94: What we’ve learned over the years is that Don Nelson is never the answer.
Graydon Gordian, 48 Minutes of Hell: For the sake of poor Anthony Randolph, the Minnesota Timberwolves should not hire Don Nelson. Although I don’t envision him actually getting the job, I think Rick Adelman would be a far better fit. I’d love to see the same imagination he brought to an unusual Rockets roster applied to the young talent Minnesota has cobbled together.
John Townsend, Truth About It: Don Nelson is not the answer in Minnesota. The Timberwolves were already one of the fastest teams in the league last season, so bringing in a coach with “uptempo DNA” is likely to blow the roof off the Target Center. Rick Adelman should get a look. He’s more than capable of molding David Kahn’s eccentric roster into a winner.
Jared Wade, 8 Points, 9 Seconds: No. I love me some Nellie and think that his innovative approach to the game revolutionized the sport. But Nelson’s best coaching days are way behind him, and I don’t think he is the answer anywhere anymore.
No one said Nelson was a good choice. That’s odd.
Ill quote my quote, to reiterate
But Nelson’s best coaching days are way behind him, and I don’t think he is the answer anywhere anymore.
I feel like I’ve seen that somewhere in this post already.
show any stat that proves that
Here’s his career record:
http://www.basketball-reference.com/coaches/nelsodo01c.html
I’m all for people being against a decision for valid reasons, but just to simply say stuff without any substantial evidence? Like I said on another thread, in this millennium, 7 out of 9 winning seasons, 5 out of 9 in the playoffs.
I’d rather have Adelman, but he has expressed no interest. Nelson is by far the best coach we know of who actually wants to coach here.
Would I prefer Adelman?
Yes, but I would be ok with Nellie ball.
